Distinguishing Features: Asimov has perfected a deadpan stare. Like many Aegles, she is small, barely 5’1”. She has complete heterochromia, though the colors are so close that many don't notice unless they specifically look.

Personality

Personality: Asimov is her mother's daughter, and that means she's a genius. She takes great pride in her intellect, both for the accolades she knows it will bring her as she grows older and proves herself, and for the obvious superiority it gives her over other people in the present. She is very much aware of her intelligence, having often been praised for it when she was smaller. Her intellectual achievements have always been lauded by those closest to her and she takes any opportunity she can to show off. She believes that all she has to do to achieve something is set her mind to it.

Asimov isn't much invested in mystery. She prefers things to be plainly stated; note that this is not a distaste for complication, as she adores multifaceted disciplines and complicated concepts, but rather a distaste for concealment. She loves puzzles, but only for the unraveling of them; she enjoys cutting through the crap and coming out with something clean and simple.

Her main source of frustration is other people. They're the one sort of puzzle she dislikes; she understands well that there is a duality to all things, and it makes sense to her that people have private sides. She's usually content to let people have their inner lives, provided they allow her her own as well. Those who push for emotional intimacy without earning it are the source of the worst of her frustration. Being forced into revealing anything about herself or into handing over her ability to determine her own course in life leaves her feeling vulnerable and violated. For someone so curious about the way the world works, and so well-educated, her lack of curiosity and interest in the lives of others tends to be seen as incongruous.

While usually insightful, particularly in regards to mechanical processes, and always willing to share what she knows, Asimov has a very limited conception of people as different from herself. She understands that she's more intelligent than they are, but she still presumes that they try to act logically and that they think in the long-term as she does. She says things to evoke a certain reaction, and when she doesn't get that reaction she gets frustrated. When she sees people struggling with a problem, she has an incredibly difficult time understanding why they're having a hard time. She isn't much of a teacher, as she lacks the patience to slow down and instruct when others fall behind.

Intellectually, she is fully aware that everyone reacts to different input differently; the machinery of the human mind is wildly varied and she knows that. She's still often shocked and frustrated by the ways people react, process, and conceive of things differently from her. It's the one thing she never really seems to commit to long-term emotional memory, and every time something doesn't go the way she thinks it ought to go she's blindsided by it. Often, surprises of this kind lead her to be incredibly angry with the offending person, a trait not helped by the natural volatility brought on by her Green Birthright; her temper is explosive and she almost never reacts to being blindsided by the fact that (gasp!) other people are different than she is in a gentle, empathetic way.

In uncertain times, Asimov turns to her faith. As she is an incorrigible scientist, many would expect her to be as unromantic about being a Priestess as she is about everything else in her life, but in fact she is incredibly devout. Believing that she has a purpose and that someone greater than she is loves her and wants her to succeed is the rock which has gotten her through many rough patches. Because she's young, she doesn't work at an altar, though she did spend time in one while training as a younger woman.

Likes:
  • Clockwork - She likes to know how things work, and in younger years would shadow the mechanics who worked the printing presses at her family's bookbindery to learn how to take things apart. When clockmakers came to maintain the many clocks and watches at the Aegle estate, Asimov would follow them about and learn how to repair the watchwork mechanisms. Now that she's older, her pocket money goes towards building small, fiddly machines so she can take them apart later. Building spring-wound music boxes and orreries is her decompression project. Her bedroom is her workspace and it is full of high-powered magnifying glasses and teensy tiny screwdrivers. She loves how predictable her machines are, how mathematically perfect they run.
  • The Aegles - Asimov has very complicated feelings about her family. Though she doesn't bear their name, she grew up incredibly close to her uncle and his heir. She was chosen for the work of being Liora's second-in-command when she was incredibly young, and out of loyalty and love for the family she undertook arduous caste training before even reaching her majority. The Aegles provided her with education and the freedom to focus on her interests, as well as a direction and a feeling of belonging. She knows she ought to be grateful, and she is grateful; she deeply, dearly loves her family, but... Well, it's complicated.
  • Religion - Asimov is strong with the Darkness and the Darkness is strong with her. In times of doubt, she turns to her faith. It was never her mother's intention to train a true devotee of the Darkness, especially not in a Territory so secular as Dena Nehele, but Asimov really and truly believes in the Night Mother. She sees her adoration of science and study of the mechanics of the metaphysical as a way to honor the Darkness, to bring it to more people. She believes that, mathematically speaking, the chances of the world becoming what it is today are so incredibly minimal that there must be the hand of something greater in it--and that no one would create someone like her unless she was meant for something greater.
Dislikes:
  • Being a ward - Asimov is incredibly intelligent and has been handling her own life scheduling since she was fourteen. She's used to choosing when she'll get up and when she'll go to bed; she's used to having more doors open to her than the door to the classroom. Yet her mother, Raziel, has decided that in order for Asimov to create connections among the next generation of Queens and courtiers, she should go to the Territory Court in Bidea. The Territory Court has strict scheduling for where she should be and when. The Territory Court has a strict lights-out policy at ten in the evening. They treat her like a child and she hates it.
  • Her bastardy - Though her mother insists there’s no dishonor to being a bastard, Asimov has always appended the caveat: if you’re an Aegle bastard. But Asimov isn’t an Aegle bastard; she’s a completely legitimate daughter of the Licht family. She’s an Atreides bastard, the only child her father has, his rightful heir, and she was disowned due to her mother’s spiteful attitude. Her solace is that her uncle has promised that, should anything ever happen to Liora, he would legitimize her and pass the bloodline on to her.
  • The Aegles - It's complicated. She appreciates the way her family has provided for her, the education and opportunities she has, but she has a growing feeling that something is very wrong with the way they treat her. The education she received because her trueborn cousin disappeared isolated Asimov from almost everyone who could have befriended her, leaving her socially crippled; when she began to make friends with the children of servants at the Aegle estate, their parents would always be quietly and quickly relocated to another Aegle property, taking the children with them. Now that Phoebus has returned, Menachem and Liora are talking of having him educated as Liora's second when her time comes--a position already filled by Asimov--without regard for the work and sacrifices she has put into her studies. And just to cap it all off, the family has sent her to Bidea, which only adds to her feelings of injustice and insecurity. She feels there's nothing the Territory Court can teach her that she does not know, and the opportunity to study under the Head of the Black Widow Coven is not enough for her to justify what she (perhaps incorrectly) views as exile. She feels disposable, and she hates that, because she shouldn't be. She's a Birthright Green genius; why would anyone prefer a Light-Jeweled Warlord over her?
Fears:
  • Mistakes - Asimov has to be right. She has to be right all the time. Slipping up is not permitted. She's been trained, taught, better than that, and she bases so much of her identity around her genius that she's not sure who she is if she isn't the smartest person in the room. If she tries new things, it has to be in private. She will refuse, loudly, possibly even violently, to try something new if she isn't absolutely sure she'll be good at it. This is related to her difficulty understanding and connecting to others, in that she knows she feels disdain for those who make mistakes in front of her, so she expects that others feel exactly the same way when confronted with someone doing it Not Good Enough. She worries making mistakes where others can see will make them think less of her, that she will become lesser to them. If she makes mistakes, she loses worth. If she makes enough of them--or even just the wrong mistake at the wrong time--then she will be utterly worthless. After all, she's already disposable because of her bastardy. Her intellect is what makes her valuable to her family. What if she makes that one perfectly placed mistake and they decide she just isn't worth anything?
  • Being alone - Asimov is used to a certain degree of loneliness, having been constantly isolated by a mother determined to raise her as a tool rather than a child. Friendships were distractions from training, from education, from the family. Her mother gets by fine with her greenhouses and her work for the family; her father loves nothing so much as he loves his business. They find pleasure and fulfillment in being alone. Other people are accessory to their goals and drive. Asimov, however, see what her aunt and uncle have, that loving partnership, and craves it. She wants an emotional connection, not a fuckbuddy with whom she does nothing but argue, not a relationship poisoned by hate and transgressions too deep to cross. But she has also been told since she was young that no one is as intelligent as she is, and no one is as important as the family is, and that she is separate from the rest of the world for a reason. She is terrified that she will never find a partner with whom to share her life. Rather than reaching out to create those bonds, however, she shuts herself away in a pointless attempt to force herself to find fulfillment in intellectual pursuits alone.
  • Her mother's devotion - From a young age, Asimov has been told that the Aegle family is special. She has always known that the reason Raziel gave birth to her was to serve the Aegle family, to provide a second-in-command for Liora when Menachem married for love. There was a not-insignificant period of Asimov's life where she suspected that her true birth father was her uncle Menachem, rather than Vitali Atreides. Asimov has had front-row seats to the devastation Raziel is willing to wreck on her personal life--and her daughter's--in order to serve what Raziel believes are the best interests of the family. Asimov knows that Raziel has done and is willing to do awful things for her brother... and she's willing to do those awful things to Asimov, if her hand is forced. Asimov fully believes that if her mother's lights led her to believe that Asimov had to die to ensure the success of the Aegles, Raziel would not only have Asimov killed, she would wield the knife herself.
Craft Strengths:
  • Communing with the Darkness - Asimov finds a great deal of peace in the Darkness, and in times of strain retreats to the safety of the Abyss. Because of this, she has a much easier time guiding others through the communion with the Darkness; she finds it easier to calm those that she guides through their connection with the Darkness, and requires less time within the Abyss to fully restore another's Jewels.
  • Efficiency Craft - Asimov has been trained to serve as the second of an aristo estate. The Aegles maintain tenant farmers, printing-houses, and bookbinderies; the first is self-supporting, but the latter two require a great deal of interaction with forces outside the family. While Liora will be the face of the family,  Asimov will handle paperwork, cross-checking references, and ensuring all product gets where it needs to be exactly when it needs to be there.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Mind Craft - Asimov has a difficult time understanding people, and this reflects in her use of most styles of mind craft. She is perfectly capable of most of the Craft in this section, but she chronically misapplies this because she doesn't understand the reasons why others might hesitate or refuse to perform in a give situation. What stimuli would bother or inspire her is often incredibly different to what would inspire or freak out another person. While she can manipulate emotions successfully, for instance, she often manipulates them into the near opposite of what she meant to evoke. If she's going for crippling fear, she'll get motivating anger or confidence.
  • Physical and Sight Shielding - Because of the way she's grown up, Asimov has never particularly had to deal with anyone who intends to do her harm. As such, she's never had the chance to develop an awareness of how much power she requires to get a shield up, or how much it should take to maintain one, or even how to place one. Her mother and tutors judged it non-essential, and Asimov isn't very interested in learning to fight. She can do basic Craft shields to protect herself from rain or dust, but not much more than that.

Maternal Cousin: Orianna Aegle, Birthright Tiger Eye Queen, 14 (180)
Maternal Cousin: Zhara Aegle, Priestess, 1 (193)

History:
Raziel Licht was born a bastard, Casteless daughter, but she wasn’t content to stay that way. Her beloved father paid for her to train as a Priestess, but that wasn’t enough, either. She sought training in the Black Widow caste as well, with the intent of becoming indispensable to her beloved brother, but when she failed to develop her snake's tooth, she settled for a dear friend in the Caste. Though her father never made her feel lesser, the society in which her brother ran did, and Raziel had desired to climb in Protocol the only way she could. Her father’s largesse allowed her the time to train two Castes--even if she failed at the second--because he saw the benefit to the family from the endeavor. Raziel functioned as her brother’s second, showing up where he couldn’t, helping him with his work.

On the outskirts of aristo glory, she met the sort of libertines of whom her father would never have approved, including her sometimes-lover always-frenemy Vitali Atreides. When Liora was born, Raziel turned her Priestess access and her Black Widow friend’s future-sight to studying the genealogy of the aristo families around her. She wanted the best genetics for her own successor, and she wanted the claim to another aristo family’s glory. In the end, she chose the Dark-Jeweled bloodline of a man she already liked. Asimov was born when Raziel was 38 in a risky pregnancy that left Raziel incapable of bearing another child. Some women would have been disappointed in their Casteless child, especially one born at such cost and from such high hopes. Raziel was not.

From the beginning, Asimov was held to high expectations. She was significantly younger than her next-nearest legitimate cousin; Phoebus was three years older than she was. In an attempt to catch up to her cool older cousin, Asimov hit every milestone early. The moment she was old enough to understand, Raziel was teaching her daughter to read, to write, to do mathematics. Asimov took to every lesson with alacrity, quickly catching up to her older cousin. At the age of six, Asimov and nine-year-old Phoebus attended the same lessons.

Her father was present in her life, constantly making time for Asimov and her mother. Vitali and Raziel had a turbulent relationship, one that distressed Asimov whenever she overheard their screaming arguments; while Vitali was sympathetic and often would concede the point should he become aware of Asimov’s presence, Raziel would refuse to comfort her child. Asimov turned to her aunt Aria and her uncle Menachem, but the two of them were often busy. When she could find neither of them, Asimov would go to her room and barricade the door, sitting by herself with a stack of books.

Once her older cousin disappeared and her aunt Aria and her cousin Orianna left as well, Asimov was functionally alone in the house. There was no-one of the appropriate age for her to socialize with, aside from her older cousin Liora, who was fresh off her Offering. She looked up to the older witch, and aspired always to impress her; Asimov anticipated that someday, when Asimov was the heiress to the Atreides newspapers, she would work with her cousin to make all the books. Young and convinced of her mother’s good intentions, Asimov didn’t expect that Raziel would deny Vitali paternity out of spite. It had never been Raziel’s intention to lose her child to the man who had fathered her. Asimov was an Aegle, despite not bearing the name of the main line. Asimov was property of the family, an asset. Had Asimov come away with a Light Birthright, perhaps Raziel would’ve reconsidered. But Asimov wore the Green. At the age of eight, she was as strong as her uncle, Darker than the cousin she would support. Asimov could replace Phoebus and use her strong connections to Vitali’s family to benefit the only people who really mattered: The family, the Aegles.

Asimov was gutted by the loss of her father once Raziel denied him paternity. Raziel, in her anger, cut Vitali out of her daughter’s life like a tumor. Without Aria to turn to for comfort, with Menachem grieving the loss of a wife and two children, Asimov was forced to learn to rely on herself. She became even closer to Liora, and strove harder than ever to prove herself to her mother. Her prodigious energy and intellect turned, in the way it sometimes does, to religion, to the Darkness that had given her the safety and love of a family and then ripped it away.

Raziel had always intended to train her casteless child, but even she couldn’t have foreseen how quickly Asimov would take to learning the ropes of the Priestess caste. It helped that Asimov was incredibly driven to learn: at the time, she didn't know or believe that Vitali hadn't abandoned her entirely. Terrified of her mother abandoning her as well, of being proven unworthy of her family's love and affection, she threw herself into learning the Priestess's Craft. Between that and her lessons--in estate management, in Protocol, in every thing that Raziel could imagine Asimov needing--her early teen years passed in a whirlwind. She completed her Priestess training at sixteen, having been in training for six years. Her apprenticeship, an important capstone to her training, took place on Aegle lands so as not to disrupt her other lessons.

While Asimov was well old enough now to actually begin to act as Liora's second-in-command--what parts of the family business her uncle was letting her practice on--her mother wasn't satisfied with her Green-Jeweled daughter wearing just one Caste. As Raziel had once attempted to train Black Widow to watch the future of the family, she began to train her daughter as well, anticipating that Asimov would learn this one even quicker with her Dark-Jeweled passion and energy under her control now. Only it didn't work out that way, because Asimov was too controlled, unwilling to make mistakes. Priestess had come naturally to her, devout as she was, but even her mother's guidance didn't make her more willing to make the intuitive leaps that the early training of a Black Widow required. Fearful of losing her Jewel and her worth, Asimov pretended at trying to learn the Caste.

Imagine her surprise when her mother turned that around on her: there were others better able to tutor her, said Raziel. Successful Black Widows who understood more than the parlor tricks that Raziel had mastered. She had spoken to her friend in the Coven, and secured a talented pair of Black Widows to teach Asimov what Raziel couldn't. Claudia Genadie and Alexandra Luceau would teach her the ropes of their Caste. Asimov, ever smart, ever perceptive, didn't need her well-trained abilities of deduction to know that training by the head of the Coven and the Queen of the Territory's Court Seer was not going to take place on the Aegle estate in Caecian. Her attempts to hide from her mother's expectations would no longer fly.

She anticipated she'd have to move to the Aegle townhouse in Bidea and commute. She didn't think her mother would make her a ward of the Court... But she is. She has a primary goal: train Black Widow, make her Offering, and get out. Her secondary goal is to watch over and protect her younger cousin, a Queen whose presence at the Court displeases every one of her family members. She just wants to know how she's supposed to do that when she's chafing at the restrictions placed on all wards and surrounded by people she has deemed her intellectual inferiors.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
When Asimov dropped her last box of personal possessions in her room at the Territory Court in Bidea, she turned her attention to the wards. Not her fellows in custody of the Court, but the protective webs and spells woven around the building. Growing up on the Aegle estate in Caecian, she'd become quite familiar with the wards that had encased the family lands since long before even her mother was born. Those wards were ancient, chaotic even, a hodgepodge of Jewel strengths down to her Green and Darker. The Aegle wards were reaffirmed every five years, reinforced, further entrenched. She could feel the power of her ancestors going back at least a hundred years when she stood on her family's land. These wards...

She closed her eyes and sat down on a wooden trunk full of clothes, probed out with her senses. The protective wards on this wing of the palace were new, she felt. Detection webs in the Sapphire of the Court Seer. Less specific spells in all the colors of the rainbow... Shielding spelled into the bricks. Orderly, precise, the proper work of a Prince directing the many Jewels that had gone into such comprehensive shielding. Asimov opened her eyes and looked at her bedroom in this deceptively-delicate fortress. This room was warded, too. Wards on the door granting entrance to keyed members of the Court (she'd find out who later) even if the physical lock were engaged. A web to detect physical injury to the inhabitants of the room (she'd take that down; what if she needed blood for her projects).

The desk was too small, and didn't have anywhere to anchor her magnifiers. She added getting that replaced to her work list. That, and her own lock on the door to keep all other wards out. Even Orianna. And where should she set up her altar? Really, the rest of it was negotiable. She didn't anticipate the Altar here at Court saw much use beyond ceremonies meant to honor the bloated bureaucracy of the Territory's elite, but she still didn't want to share her devotions with others in any capacity but that of a ministering Priestess. Why share something so private and personal with those who wouldn't appreciate it? Not for the first time, she wished bitterly that she'd been born in Raej or Shalador, somewhere where faith meant something.

Instead she was here. Signed over to the fucking Territory Court to be treated like a child when she was, in fact, almost a woman grown. She'd make her Offering tomorrow if she felt ready for it... but the Darkness would call her when it was time. If it wasn't calling, she wasn't ready.

Asimov got up and grabbed the desk just under its lip, then with a grunt of effort pulled it away from the wall. She could've used Craft, but she was going to be up anyway, so why not? Crouching by the wall, she confirmed for sure that there wasn't space enough for her magnifier setup. Oh well. Getting a larger desk would probably make someone feel she was indebted to them, and looking safe, reliable, and indebted was a good way to deal with people. Her father had taught her that.

"This is so fucking stupid," she told the desk.

Amal has a two rank descent and because of her Jewel ranking, if you choose Opal, would in fact be Blood Opal. You could request Summer Sky to Blood Opal or Rose to Purple Dusk, or obviously anything else that is lower than Green to Red and has a two rank descent.

**Edit**
Purple Dusk to Blood Opal is totally fine, this was in reply to the previous question about Rose to Opal.

I have requested a registry return on this sheet here.

I would like to return her to her original Jewel set of Green to Red, please.

I will be attaching her to my subaccount Asimov Licht.

Sheet returned to registery as per purchase here. Please attached character account as soon as possible! :)

As per request for original Jewels.

Weighed by Mother Night...

You've risen from the Darkness twice blessed with an uncut Green birthright Jewel, and were gifted with an uncut Red Jewel at your offering.

Asimov will be ready for review once Leez approves (for Phoebus mentions) and Phe approves (for DN ward situations) :>

I have also acquired a DJ balancing slot for her, so my ratio shouldn't be a problem.
