Appearance

Play By: Alexander Skarsgaard
Distinguishing Features:

Wraith has a number of scars over the length of his body that he keeps covered at all times. These resemble slashes and stab wounds from a very sharp knife or sword. There is also a thin scar that  races along his throat from ear to ear,  always visible on his pale skin. That pale skin is just a shade or two lighter than the average Dea al Mon male and makes his pale blue eyes stand out even further.

Personality

Personality:

Wraith Estalon radiates a simmering intensity born of true faith. Faith in his people, faith in their cause, and faith in himself. His smile reflects a ghost of the handsome male he used to be and his laugh echoes around him. Those smiles, however, are usually cruel and false. His laugh is just as mocking for he knows something you do not. When not in the company of his brothers and sisters of the Brood of the True Born, Wraith is often quiet and pensive, usually reviewing maps or scouting the forest to learn the place better feel for the place. He enjoys the company of the Brood but knows that they are to him what he is to them: a tool, a cog in the machine. He always felt like that in Nieste with the Dea al Mon, but among the Brood, it all feels like it has a purpose. He despises the Dea al Mon, feeling as though they’ve lost the power and savagery that made them the greatest race in all of Kaeleer. Now they hide like roaches, giving up more and more of their lands to the Brood while crowing about their pride as a people. Even the memories of his family don’t bring him peace, for they’ve fallen into the same trap.

It sickens him to his core.

That simmering anger deepens when the Bitch Queen, Gale Galoneth is spoken of in his presence. His muscles tense and more than one person reports seeing his fingers clench and unclench as though grasping her slim throat. The idea of squeezing the life from Gale, of watching the light in her eyes darken as she struggles for breath, brings him peace. That peace never lasts long and Wraith knows, deep down, that killing her won’t make him feel better. What matters to Wraith is who Gale’s death will wound. It would please him to watch Blade Amdir go berserk and be brought down by the rest of the court like the abomination he truly is.

The finest wine wouldn’t equal watching Prince Cypress withdraw into himself for all time, unwilling to feel anything ever again after the loss of his Queen.

Most of all, Wraith wants Gale dead because it would rip every shred of purpose out of the life of Valor Tanithil, his murderer. The Warlord Prince would lose everything dear to him in that moment. On the hardest days, the days that shake his faith and force him to question everything, the thought of destroying Gale and her Bonded males gives him the strength to push forward, to support his brothers and sisters, and to honor the Broodmother who saved him from the cold embrace of the Darkness.

Killing others makes him feel alive.

And he will live again.

Likes:
  • 1. The Broodmother - She is the way, the truth, and the bringer of Freedom. Wraith thought he understood the corruption of Dea al Mon as merely a political thing. It was the Broodmother, Genesis, who showed him that the political corruption was just one facet that ran so much deeper. He is forever grateful to her for rescuing him from death’s embrace, so he will fight alongside the rest of the Brood until they are all destroyed or the Dea al Mon have been wiped from the world.

  • 2. Instilling Terror - The Dea al Mon have spoken of the Brood in whispers and fearful tones for decades, if not centuries. The Brood are the monsters they hate and do not understand, charged with all manner of crimes to justify the pogrom that fuels the patriotism of the Ebon Guard and the Red Cloaks. Wraith relishes the role of monster, tormentor, and bringer of destruction. The Dea al Mon hate what the Brood represents: clarity, unity, and a strength of purpose that can move mountains when directed.

Let them hate, so long as they fear.

  • 3. The Ebon Wood - For all he has endured and all the hate he tries to hide, the Ebon Wood is still his favorite place in all of creation. He has heard that there are lands beyond the forests of his birth, but he isn’t eager to explore them. He’s more interested in the lands of the Kindred and in converting or destroying them next. These lands belong to the Brood alone; there is no room to share.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Gale Galoneth- The Queen of Dea al Mon has allowed corruption to fester in her court for years. She protects Blade Amdir, the abomination, though he should have been broken long ago. She is a butcher who has used whispers and sycophants to present the image of a Queen who would suffer all for her people. She employs assassins to silence the tongues of those who speak truth to power. Wraith hated her during his first life and he hates her even more in his second. Given the power of Witch, or even the Brood Mother, he’d bless all of her daughters with the Waste just to watch Gale’s horror when they arrived to tear her limb from limb.

  • 2. Knives - Wraith hates knives. He can still feel Valor Tanithil’s blades parting his flesh like paper, driving into his body and stealing away his life. When he can sleep, he usually awakens due to nightmares about the night of his first death. In every nightmare, those blades rip him apart while he remains helpless and unable to move. He stays well away from any knife wielders in combat.

  • 3.  Pain - Wraith hates getting injured in combat. He allows shock troops to engage the enemy first while taking shots from behind cover in order to keep his enemies on the defensive. If a situation occurs where he must get physically involved, he often has to work himself up to the point where he’ll accept getting hurt to accomplish his goals. He’ll be deeply unhappy about it later.

    Fears:

  • 1. True Death  - Wraith is well aware that he did not truly die when Valor Tanithil savaged him in Gale’s name. But he was so close to death that he felt Hell drawing him in. If he ever feels that cold sensation on his soul again, it will be too soon. He will not stay and fight to the last if the situation turns against him. Running away to fight another day means you get to live and Wraith will cling to that life to the best of his ability.

  • 2. Gale Escaping Punishment - The Bitch Queen of the Dea al Mon has lead their people to their fall with her weakness. She ordered his execution based on whispers, but she wouldn’t have done it if her sins weren't real.  She deserves to fall and be consumed by the corruption she’s allowed to fester in the shadows of her empire. But she has dark jeweled bonded males. The people of Dea al Mon love and revere her. Wraith is afraid that, once the truth is known, the Brood will still be seen as oppressors instead of liberators. And her people will line up and die to the last to keep the Bitch Queen from the suffering she so richly deserves.

  • 3. The Kindred - Cowards, all. They hide from the truth as sure as the Dea al Mon, but at least they Dea al Mon have the courage to fight. The Kindred withdrew and sealed themselves away. But Wraith knows that an enemy left behind to plot often returns when least expected. Wraith worries that the Brood will reach the climax of their efforts in crushing the Dea al Mon, only for the Kindred to return and side with their enemies. If that happens, their campaign is in jeopardy.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Pass through Objects - Wraith is able to move himself plus four other people through an object as long as they are physically touching him. This allows him to transport his soldiers through solid walls or ceilings for ambushes or reinforcements.

  • 2. Voice Manipulation - Making oneself heard is easy enough. Wraith has focused his talent in this Craft to make his voice into a weapon, usually in the form of a scream. The scream can damage those without aural shields, shattering eardrums and disrupting equilibrium. This can lead to permanent hearing loss if not healed in a timely fashion. Wraith is immune to his own sound wave.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Masking Psychic Scent - Try as he might to keep himself stealthy, Wraith simply cannot hide his psychic scent. It permeates the areas he occupies and lingers long after he is gone. He’s survived more than one unfortunate ambush due to being tracked this way.

  • 2. Combat Shielding - Wraith can’t split his attention between fighting and shielding at the same time. In combat, his priority is making sure that everyone who arrived with him leaves with him as well. Being able to use his shields offensive would be a boon, but he’s prefers other methods of fighting, so training in this craft has fallen by the wayside.

    History:

Everyone in Dea al Mon hails from a military family, as both males and females of nearly all castes are required to serve in the Ebon Guard or the Red Cloaks, respectively. As the firstborn of the family, however, Shade Alerron was expected to gain high rank. Shade could claim descent from two previous Lord Obsidians and one Lady Sanguine. For his own part, Shade hoped to achieve the rank of Colonel before retiring and settling down to start a family with a woman of good standing. She would bear six children, an homage to his mother's five siblings and he would find a Court position in Eddersea or his father’s District of Bad Wildungen. He would live in comfort for the rest of his days, watching his children grow and then enter service, continuing the traditions of service that his family was known for until the end of days.

Life came along and laughed at Shade’s plans.

Shade received a Rose jewel at his Birthright and it stoked his determination to excel. He grew up reading the histories of the Dea al Mon, learning of their most famous warriors, like Dragon Raedrimm. He grew inspired by the rise of ambitious men like Falx Rothilion, the Lord Purifier. When he wasn’t reading about heroes and history, he played in the woods, reenacting famous battles and acting out the ways he believed they would have gone if he’d been in command. Growing older, Shade realized that military service was to be the focus of his life and he trained for it at all times, slowly sculpting his body for the rigors of combat. He played hard. He broke bones. He learned from his mistakes. His father, Commander Mace Alerron held respect from not only his District Queen, but also Lady Elbereth, Queen of the Territory. His mother, Quill, was a Master Shieldwoman and widely renowned for her ability to heal others in the heat of combat.

Shade would build his name through excellence and someday be known as Lord Obsidian. When his Offering bestowed the Opal jewel upon him, it confirmed his belief that the Darkness was with him. His family welcomed his younger sister, Scribe, shortly after that and he impressed upon her the idea that service to one’s people was not just the right thing to do. It was the only thing to.

Training in the Ebon Guard was harder than he expected, but Shade enjoyed every challenge. Encounters with the Brood grated on his soul, knowing that his people were being changed and corrupted. The mysterious affliction known as the Waste stole his men from their families like thieves in the night, never to return them. He supported those he could and granted mercy to those he couldn’t. Twenty-five years of service earned him the rank of Master Chief, allowing him to work closer with his enlisted men on the ground. As the appearance of a new threat, the Brood of the True Born, came to light, Shade watched his men grow jaded. He couldn’t help but notice how much the Guard bled for Dea al Mon while the aristos sat safely in their courts and pissed away their days on leisure and attempting to get in the most biting comments at Court.

Did they not understand the new threat against their people? Or did they simply not care?

Lord Mace soon made it clear: Queen Gale lacked the will to fight to this new threat as savagely as needed. She would rather watch Dea al Mon die by degrees than allow her Commanders to everything necessary to win. A small group of soldiers understood this and what needed to be done. One of those soldiers was Shade’s uncle, Flail, who’d been most vocal about Gale’s failings. Flail’s unit met an untimely end at Kassel and that pushed Mace to bring Shade deeper into the conspiracy.

Gale Galoneth had to be pushed from her throne.

Their scheme brought Shade into contact with Gale’s daughter, Zephyr. While Shade was taken with the young woman, he blamed her mother for loss of so many of their people. Perhaps his contempt for the Queen wasn’t as concealed as well as he thought. Perhaps he was betrayed. Whatever the cause, Gale Galoneth learned that Shade’s intentions toward her daughter were not pure. She learned that he worked with others hoping to dethrone her and destabilize Dea al Mon. Already on her Gray List, Shade Alerron’s name moved over quietly to the Red List of her enemies, those who needed to die to stabilize the Territory. She could not sanction his father, for she could not prove that he was among the conspirators though Gale believed it so.

But she could send a message to make him reconsider his treachery.

Shade was deployed to a small village on the outskirts of Bad Wildungen rumored to be in the path of the Brood. He set a watch and headed into the forest for solitude and ponder how to woo Zephyr  and how to greet her at their next meeting.

    He never got the chance.

Warlord Prince Valor Tanithil struck with such fury and speed  that Shade barely mounted a defense. The single blow he struck only seemed to anger the Warlord Prince further and a Warlord Prince on the Killing Edge needed no provocation. Shade called for help but none came. Shade could not have known that Valor’s love for Zephyr ran deeper than friendship or service to her family. To Shade, this was a horrible misunderstanding that he couldn’t talk, or fight, his way through.

To Valor, it was a job he enjoyed on behalf of his Queen and in defense of Zephyr’s honor.

Shade’s lifeblood drained from his body in the woods far away from his men. He didn’t learn until later that Valor slew them first to keep them from coming to their leader’s aid. The attack was blamed on the Brood and Shade’s squad was buried with full honors from the Queen of Dea al Mon who personally shook the hands of Mace and Quill Alerron. She looked their children in the eyes and expressed sorrow at the family’s loss. Valor stood by Zephyr, who expressed sadness at Shade’s heroic sacrifice.

Shade Alerron died and was forgotten in time by the very people he gave his life for.

Lord Vanvathor found him and ordered him healed. Shock and fear at being captured by the Brood gave way to anger at the method of his death. Gale Galoneth was unfit to rule. She made the Brood into enemies to stoke her people’s pride and demanded that they fight in order to cover her own weaknesses. By the time Chance offered him the opportunity to join the Brood and take revenge, Shade needed no further prodding.

But Shade Alerron was dead, betrayed by his people and left to bleed on the floors of the forest he’d loved since his youth. Rage at those living in ignorance clawed at his insides. His scars burned at the memory of being cut to pieces by a beast that wore the skin of a once-noble people.

The Broodmother learned of Shade's defeat as one of the Dea al Mon. Immediately, the Genesis knew the proper spirit to bind to the warrior. He fed on the flesh of one of his former people and when it was done, she bound to a lonely death spirit called a banshee, a creature called that expressed its rage at the living through its keening screams. The creature's shock and surprise burned away any traces of guilt or recrimination, scourged away the doubt the Master Chief felt at choosing his path. His body hurt from the pain inflicted on him, but the spirit urged him to share his pain through his screams.

Walls will not bar us. Pain will not stop us. Fear cannot slow us and our screams are the last things our enemies will hear. Death is no longer our enemy. It is our mother, our wife, and our sister in one flesh.

His old life burned away as his skin paled. His first words were the scream of rage that his allies and enemies now know him for.

Shade Alerron died in defense of a lie.

Wraith Estalon lives to show others the truth.

    Character in Play:

Choking on one’s own blood brought clarity to a situation.

Master Chief Shade Alerron was very clear on what had just happened to him. The unclear part was why.

A traitor’s death for a traitor’s acts.” the Warlord Prince spoke. Shade coughed, loosing a torrent of crimson liquid into the leaves on the forest floor.

    Oh, that.

He tried to speak, tried to tell the young man that he was being deceived, used by the system he thought he was protecting. He wanted to explain to him that Gale Galoneth would use him until there was nothing left, then cast  him aside by sending a killer for him. He wanted to speak to Zephyr, to tell her that he was sorry for deceiving her and that he’d make it right if she granted him another chance.

He tried to beg his killer for an end to his suffering. For mercy.

Only blood came from his mouth.

The Warlord Prince turned and walked away, his knives drenched in crimson fluid.

Shade tried to call after him to come back, beg him not to leave.

*Please don’t leave me here alone.*

The world faded to black his killer melted away into the shadows.

    ***

Wraith Estalon knelt down beside the Blood Male. The soldier’s body convulsed and he sputtered as he gurgled and choked on his own blood. They were in a small village on the outskirts of Bad Wildungen. In another life, Wraith had known these forests for their peace and tranquility. Now, they were still tranquil but there was no peace to be found here for the Unclean, the ones who called themselves the Dea al Mon.

Has clarity found you, I wonder?” Wraith asked, looking down without pity on the young male. The lifeblood pooled in his mouth like a geyser and Wraith reached out his index finger. He caught a couple of drops and then lifted them to his face, studying them. He wiped them away on the Ebon Guard uniform of the man before him and sighed.

I’ve been where you are, in thought as well as deed. I died on the floor of this forest ten years ago. After my death, people made a lot of kind noises about my sacrifices and my honor. It was a kind thing to do, but it was a lie. Lies are not kind, my friend. The truth is better even when it hurts.” Wraith told him.

The truth is that your death means nothing to those that sent you here. They will forget your name even as they use your memory, and the memories of a thousand others, to stir hatred against my people. I grieve that you’ve lived for nothing but your sacrifice will be remembered. You have not died in vain.” Wraith assured him, needing the soldier to hear him and believe what he heard.

I will remember you and I will seek vengeance in your name.

Wraith reached out and grasped the boy’s throat, crushing his windpipe and ending his suffering. When the body ceased its thrashing, he reached up and closed the soldier’s eyes for the final time. Mercy and comfort were better left to the Healers, but Wraith granted him the honor of a quick death. A brave soldier deserved no less from his enemies.

Far better than I was given.

Wraith turned from the body and went to join the others.

Sadly, the soldier would not rise again.

Not everyone has the drive to become a wraith.
