Appearance

Play By: Will Arnett
Distinguishing Features: His darker hair marks him as lower class. Voulge isn’t bothered by this for he is happy with his lot in life. His height makes him stand out slightly but within the Ebon Guard he feels at home.

Personality

Personality:
Not bound by his caste to be innately organized or dangerously volatile, Voluge is characterized best by his understanding. He excels at calming the rages of men around him and has a sharp mind for a compromise. The skills have served him well as the liaison between the Ebon Guard and craftsmen in the Devinos Province.

To his friends he has a quick wit and boisterous laugh, even if that laugh and wit have been tempered by recent years of loss. Voul doesn’t wear his loss like a Shield and instead works to appear like he did during the years of plenty. Those in his life who have known him during the loss of his wife and sons known how deeply wounded the man is. A very few have even seen the tears shed and the lamentations of injustice.

Over the years he has developed a shrewd sense for business and watches for those who are trying to work him over. It has resulted in being a man who typically watches and listens beyond the words being spoken, but that which is unspoken. He may not be a master of the subtle inflection or the small body signs but Voul has developed an eye for a liar. On the flip side, Voul is not a very good liar himself. He is far more the honest type and the more complex the lie the more difficult he has selling it. This has given him a reputation as being a good person for making a deal and rarely getting a bad offer.

Within the Guard he is respected mostly for his abilities to calm those in the midst of a cold rage. This has left him in a position of being on call and even awaken during the night to come and try to diffuse a situation. A few men and women owe him their lives and has earned him many dear friends over the years. Some of those men and women have fallen to the Brood as well and now Voulge readily supports anything that is meant to combat the danger that threatens all of Dea al Mon.

Likes:
  • His children. Though only his daughter Kalis remains untouched by the Brood, he is an attentive and caring father. When his children were young he would frequently take time out of the day’s routine to spend time one on one with them.
  • The Queen of Dea al Mon: Gale. The Queen has been successful during her tenure and her willingness to fight the Brood which holds her 11 daughters in thrall is commendable. He may not agree with everything about the Queen but the fear of the outside is far less a fear than if the Brood succeeds in destroying Dea al Mon.
  • A long day’s work. With how much suffering he has seen in recent years, Voulge has really thrown himself into his work. His daughter occasionally comes around and pulls him away early but he burns the midnight oil many nights, toiling away at paperwork or organizing stores, work that can be done by others but he has claimed requires his touch. It is not hard to see he is trying to avoid an empty home, a lost wife and sons.
Dislikes:
  • Those who trespass in the Ebon Woods. As a member of the Ebon Guard he is directly responsible for helping keep the woods of Dea al Mon free of those who would break through into the Closed Territory. It is rare enough that he doesn’t feel it poses a significant daily risk.
  • The fast talk. In trying to make a deal there are sometimes those craftsmen or women who believe if they talk fast enough, pressure him with a sense of urgency, Voulge will make a deal that doesn’t benefit the Ebon Guard. He has spent enough years in his position to know a good deal from bad and doesn’t appreciate the implication on his intellect by those who would try to pull the wool over his eyes.
  • Endless Protocol. Voulge knows that Protocol has its place but he can tire of Protocol if he is situated around Queens and Courts for too long. His job has him working with many men and women who don’t find themselves as hard pressed to utilize Protocol daily. While Voulge has a firm grasp on Protocol he finds he tires of it and wishes for simple interactions, simple motives after a time.
Fears:
  • Dea al Mon falling completely to the Brood. His family has personally been hit hard by the Brood. Voulge fears that for each man or woman who falls to the suffering is another stepping stone to the Brood overtaking Dea al Mon. If all of Dea al Mon were to fall than there would be nothing to protect the Closed Territories from Kaeleer and visa versa.
  • Falling to the Brood. His wife and two sons fell to the Brood, all in service of the Red Cloaks and Ebon Guard. While Voulge himself doesn’t work outside Devinos Province much he knows his role makes him more susceptible. It is a fear that haunts his dreams, just as his dreams are haunted by his wife and sons.
  • Failing the Ebon Guard. His life for the last 40 years has been devoted to the Ebon Guard. It is ingrained in his soul and blood. He was suffered for the Guard and while he may not hold the utmost power, Voulge believes in the organization with true faith. Failing his duties or the organization as a whole would be a wound he would be hard pressed to truly recover from.
Craft Strengths:
  • Calming Rage. Unique to the Warlord caste is the ability to calm the Cold Rage of other men around him. Typically this is used on Warlord Prince but Voulge has even come into situations in which he has diffused the rage of a Prince or Warlord. Perhaps his most common use of the talent is used on his Brother-in-law Ranseur.
  • Voice Manipulation. Voul is able to increase the sound of his voice and even talk softly enough with Craft that only one person in a crowded room can hear him. This has come in very handy during his time with the Ebon Guard and oftentimes he pairs it with his Calming Rage, able to reach those even in the midst of combat with his abilities.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Power Bolts. One of the main reasons he was transferred to a non combat role was Voulge’s lacking combat Craft. Though his Shields were powerful he never perfected a powerful Power Bolt. This had been an embarrassment as a young man but he has accepted the deficiency and excelled in other ways.
  • Sheath Craft. Another option within the Ebon Guard has been to be one who can sneak through the forest, able to be unseen and unheard by those creatures and fools who would risk entering from the outside world. Voul was unable to master the art of Stealth Craft, his Sight Shield rippling in the light, his foot falls oddly muffled but audible. The lack resigned him to Ebon Guard duties outside of the front lines.
Life Story

Rapier Ecthelion, Warlord, Summer Sky - Purple Dusk (Lost to the Waste) (24)

History:

As a boy he’d looked forward to the chance to serve in the Ebon Guard. He had played with toy soldiers and been proud of his heritage, of his father’s service in the guard. Even as a young boy with his mother’s attempts to teach him the ways of a tradesman, it was always the Ebon Guard he returned to.

As a man of eighteen he made his Descent and joined the Guard. Voulge was twenty-two when he fell in love with Verdant and proposed the same year. His family and her’s were both against the youthful marriage, swearing to the two lovebirds they were too young. It was love though and they didn’t let family or youth stop them. They were married and Verdant, still a member of the Red Cloaks, pregnant. Verdant, her body and will strong, stayed on active duty until a week before the birth of their daughter Kalis. She honored her husband and named the girl after a warrior’s weapon.

Their family grew as the years past. Neither Verdant nor Voulge ever left their duties in the Red Cloaks or the Ebon Guard but they did take less dangerous roles. Verdant became a peacekeeper in Devinos Province and Voulge began to work for the liaisons between craftsmen and the Guards they supplied. It isn’t easy work but he helps to manage the supplies for the guard, the merchants who sell to the guard and artisans who supply the Guard. It provides him a respected, if not low, rank within the Guard that had made his Lady Wife happy for years.

When his brother-in-law Ranseur was caught up in the scandal of Facloner’s death and Lady Allure’s failure, Voulge and Verdant were there for him. They spent more time with the brother who Verdant loved and Voulge had come to care for just as deeply. And in time, when fate would turn on Voulge and steal Verdant from him, Ranseur was there for him.

It was within the last decade that Voul had been filled with tragedy after tragedy. First Verdant fell to the Brood, one of the earliest victims. It gutted Voulge. Then after a few years both his sons, within months of each other, fell to the Brood as well. Kalis was the only one who kept him strong, Kalis and his brother-in-law Ranseur. The strength of the Warlord Prince brought Voulge back from the brink of despair, from the unknowable Abyss of suicide.

Character in Play:

The Jeweless Blood female in his office was uncomfortable. Her red cloak and insignia was prominent and if anything Voulge should have been the one who was ill at ease. She was younger than him but by her stance and motions he could tell that she was proficient in both her body and the Craft of a Red Cloak. Jeweless or not, Voulge was very accommodating.

Once she was seated and Voulge had offered refreshments she cut straight to the chase. His wife hadn’t shown up for her assigned duties. Voulge had asked if they had checked his home to see if she was still there and the Blood female shook her head no. They wanted to give him a chance to check on his wife before the Red Cloaks investigated her desertion of her duties.

What Voulge found at home haunted his dreams, tormented his nightmares. He’d thought his wife was just out of sorts, unhappy with him and perhaps just bored with him. When he returned home to find her sitting in her chair, staring out the window with her listless gaze, Voulge knew what had happened. It had been making rounds in the Territory, rumors of a sickness of the mind, a sickness of the body, perhaps both.

His wife had contracted the Waste.

He managed to keep his sons and daughter from the house while he contacted the Red Cloaks, specifically the Healers division of the Red Cloaks. The woman who had shown up was markedly not his daughter, though she served the same division. Voulge recognized her as a friend of Kalis’. He hadn’t been able to keep the sheane of tears from his gaze when he saw the Healer. Voul hadn’t been able to say the words without his voice breaking.

He knew from what the rumors meant. He had heard the only recourse for the Waste. Voulge knew he had lost his wife from the moment he made contact with the Red Cloaks and explained the situation.

Still, he kissed the top of her head, told her he loved and watched the Red Cloaks bundle her up, careful to not touch her. It wasn’t certain how you contacted the Waste but the facts were the same: there was no cure. And when Voulge went to bed that night, alone, the only sound in his house were those of his bitter sobs.
