Appearance

Play By: Joseph Morgan
Distinguishing Features:

Valor favors his father in his hair, facial shape and expressions, but has a deeper shade of his mother’s blue eyes. He has a small scar on his left palm from a training accident years ago. His posture is always perfect, possibly due to his mother’s example and the training of his dancing teachers. He moves light and quickly on his feet, always ready to dance or explode into violence at the first command...and sometimes before.

Personality

Personality:

Valor Tanithil is courteous and professional to members of the Court, just like his father’s. He dresses to impress and to emulate Cypress's serious and stoic demeanor. The only evidence of the cold rage burning in his gut is the way his eyes take in each and every person in his field of view. He is not as feral as many Warlord Princes, but this isn’t to say that he isn’t feral; he simply reins it it. He strives to be a silent, reassuring presence for Queen Gale in a different way than even his father. His father receives his polite courtesy and respect, but little more, as Valor isn’t sure how to relate or react to him.

Outside of Court, with friends and family, Valor’s demeanor eases just a bit. He jokes with his sisters, Sorrow and Orchid, though he is a bit more brooding in their presence than anywhere else. His friend Sabre earns some of his deepest laughs and they talk about hearsay or the current events of the day.

His most genuine reactions are reserved for his mother, Solace, whom has been there for him since the day he was born. With her, he can simply be Valor and not Prince Valor, Servant of Lady Gale Galoneth . His best friend Zephyr, also called Fir, makes him laugh like no one else and drives him to live his life and enjoy it, rather than watching it pass unobserved. Valor has a tendency to take himself seriously (an understatement, some would say) and he spends the majority of his days being different things to different people that he finds it difficult to be.

His cold rage never allows him an extended period to do that, but he works to appreciate those small moments.

Likes:
  • 1. Solace - Valor’s mother is his rock and the one of the few people who understand him, as a person, outside of court. She’s endured much for his sisters and even more for him. She has never given up on him or turned away from him, despite how difficult he was as a child. He will repay that devotion with all that he is.

  • 2. Queen Gale - He has been bound to his Queen ever since he was a boy. Her presence is a stabilizing force in his life just like his mother’s. He hopes someday to be his Queen’s ally and dear friend. She has no need of lovers and Valor wouldn’t try to supplant them even if she did. He simply wishes to be a safe place for Queen Gale.

  • 3. Writing - Valor prefers writing down his thoughts to speaking them. Thoughts are clumsy, imprecise things; he prefers selecting his words with care and finding just the right word to voice his feelings.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. The Rut - The Rut is outside his control. Being on the Killing Edge means that, while his actions are his own, he is never certain when or where he will lose control of himself. Worse still, he can’t always control the damage he’ll inflict before he’s done.

  • 2. Court Meetings- Court meetings are full of uppity nobles with too many opinions and two few solutions. Queen Gale and Prince Valor patiently suffer through them and at least one physical outburst by Prince Blade. Valor watches the meetings with mild interest while fighting the urge to crack the skulls of those who question Lady Gale's vision for the realm.

  • 3. Complex Craft - Truly complex Craft spells try Valor’s patience. They are necessary and often have greater effect than his quick and dirty tricks. The time spent working them out, however, is prohibitive and chafes his already frayed nerves.

    Fears:

  • 1. The Waste- This mysterious disease has taken his two half-sisters. While he was never close to them, their loss has made his father more distant than ever. Worse, it has taken Zephyr from him, a wound that will bleed the rest of Valor’s life if she never recovers. Will it take his blood sisters next? His Queen? His  father? Or, Darkness forbid, his mother? The very thought causes Valor to lose sleep.

  • 2. Marriage- Valor has spent most of his life watching his mother endure a marriage where she always comes second to his Queen. She's never bemoaned her lot in life, but many women would never have accepted it in the first place. Valor would rather remain single and alone than try to reconcile his life between a wife and his Queen. Deep down, he's afraid that his bias toward duty will lead him to make the same choices his father has, making a wife and any children they bear suffer the burden of his absence. Remaining unclaimed frees him from having to choose.

  • 3. True Profession Discovered - Valor has done, does, and will do things in his Queen’s name that he doesn’t want his family (or Zephyr) to know. These people view him in a favorable light and their ignorance of his true profession is the best protection he can offer them in case something goes awry.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Hunter’s Mark - Valor is able to mark targets for his personal surveillance. He can only mark one target at a time, but when that person is marked, he does not lose them.

  • 2. Masking Psychic Scent - Valor hides his psychic scent almost as a matter of course. When an opponent can read fear, lust, anger, or other guiding emotions, they learn how to manipulate you. While Valor cannot be the perfect assassin or diplomat, he represents his Lady in all things. He strives to avoid giving away anything that might compromise him.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Incite Rage - Valor attributes his lack of skill with this craft to the stoic demeanor of his parents and the teachings of Protocol. Both are adept at distancing themselves from their emotions so that they don't act from emotion. Valor feels his internal rage deeply, but he strives to keep it in check at all times. Passing it to others for any reason is unthinkable. It would be the same as causing a scene, so this Craft is anathema to him.

  • 2. Power Bolts - If he’s had ill luck with Inciting Rage, his skill at firing direct bolts of force is abysmal. Despite repeated training and attempts, Valor cannot feel the energy of a power bolt coursing from his jewels, through him, and outward to hit the target. It’s as if something is missing when he tries to use this particular bit of Craft.

*Jewels are as they appear on Cypress and Solace’s sheets.

    History:

Valor is the youngest of Cypress Tanithil’s three children with Solace Tanithil and his only son. Valor’s birth required Solace to do a deep rearranging of the household as the young boy exhibited the hallmarks of a Warlord Prince as early as his third year. He was separated from the rest of the family and Solace delayed having further children in order to give Valor the largess of her attention. He was a demanding child, his emotions and displeasures setting everyone in the house on edge. His father was a distant presence in his life and found emotional connection difficult; Valor’s emotional connections were formed with his mother, sisters, and teachers as he was able.

Valor learned that he had two older half-sisters on his father’s side, Serene and Amber, borne to him by the Queen of the Dea al Mon, Gale Galoneth. Valor heard stories of the beautiful and strong Queen from his father and mother, but nothing prepared him for meeting her at his Birthright Ceremony. After being gifted the Purple Dusk, he was noted as already standing far deeper in the Abyss than his father. It made him feel further connected to his sister, Sorrow, also gifted with the Purple Dusk, and he tried to spend as much time near her as possible. He also felt a deeper connection with his mother, who held the same jewel as her Offering.

However, the pull he felt toward Queen Gale Galoneth was undeniable and he Bonded to her early, granting him a stability and sense of purpose lacking in most boys his age. From then on, his life was a careful balance of pleasing three different people. He loved his Mother and deeply respected his Queen, but his Father remained a mystery.

Solace made certain that Valor and his sisters had a classical education including singing and dancing lessons, along with much reading and writing. Valor enjoyed dancing, but it was writing that gained his greatest interest. Adolescence found him taking parchment and pen wherever he went and wrote down the things he saw, the things he heard, and how they made him feel. His first attempts at poetry focused on Queen Gale and his mother, but it was a chance meeting with one of Gale’s daughters that altered his course.

Valor doesn’t know why Zephyr Galoneth caught his attention that day, but he is glad that she did. They learned quickly that their fathers each served the Queen directly and that the butted heads often. Valor didn’t care, though. He simply enjoyed Fir’s (he still doesn’t understand why she shortens her name) presence and resolved that their fathers’ issues would not impact that friendship. When he received the Sapphire at his Offering, he earned a bit of praise from his father and arrangements were made to bring him into his Queen’s service. Still, he made time for his mother and Zephyr where he could and trained to be of service to his Queen and the Territory.

The Waste struck the Territory, afflicting his elder sisters first and driving Cypress deeper into his work and further from his other children. Valor returned after a mission in the Queen’s service to learn that Zephyr had been afflicted as well and had been taken to get further help. He’d plan to be plain with Zephyr and tell her something deeply important but now it felt as though he might never get the chance.

When Lady Gale summoned him to her and explained that she had new duties for him, duties that she could not entrust to her other Bonded males, Valor put aside his grief and accepted his new calling. Officially, he serves in her First Circle as a Liaison to the Province leaders.

Unofficially, he is Gale's pet killer. He is honored to receive his Lady’s trust, though he chafes at being separated from her for any length of time. It is also difficult for him to be Bound to a Queen that he must share with his father and a loathsome individual in Blade Amdir. These two males consume the bulk of Lady Gale's attention and time, leaving Valor to chase down what scraps he's lucky enough to find. More than once, his anger has been prickled by a subordinate advising him that Queen Gale is unable to see him at this time due to meetings with the Steward or her First Escort.

Valor takes pains to separate his lives so that his family does not learn of his true profession. He also does not want Zephyr to learn of it and hopes that when she returns, she’ll understand his dedication to his position.

All the while, he tells himself that he is not becoming his father.

Valor's Ruts shame him, for he cannot direct them as ruthlessly as he strives to direct himself. He has made arrangements with a couple of ladies in the court to address his urges as often as possible without asking questions. When laying in the arms of one of his lovers, Valor imagines having a wife and (possibly) children someday. Then he banishes those thoughts for the fever dreams they are. He is not, in his opinion, in any shape to be someone's husband, let alone someone's father.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

    Dearest Zephyr,

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. Someday soon, I hope to read these words to you for real.

Valor smiled at the words on the page. The idea of reading the to Fir when once she was well made him happy, made him believe that everything would be all right. Yet not even Mother could grant him that surety. He’d asked her more than once to look into her webs and see what knowledge of his friend’s fate lie within the Twisted Kingdom’s pathways. Each time, she coudl not provide him any more comfort than before. She tried, however, and that made a world of difference for Valor.

I’ve been meaning to check in on Saffron and I will soon. Lady Gale has given me important tasks of late and I mean to succeed at them and show her my quality. She’s decided to open the borders, to let the other realms enter the Wood and learn of our plight.

As you’d imagine, some are disturbed by the idea. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen our fathers agree on something.

Agree was a strong word, but Valor felt it applied here. Many of Lady Gale’s advisors spoke against the idea, but Valor remained silent. He merely catalogued who spoke when, whose tones voice tested the bounds of Protocol and generally kept himself in check. Lady Gale dismissed everyone but asked Valor to attend while she unwound from the meeting.

I agreed with her. I think communication with the outside world will help. Anything that brings you back to--to us is a good thing, in my opinion. And before you tell me to worry about those who suffered before you, stop. Because it is you I most wish to see defeat this monster before us.

When you return, I will have more to say. For now, please keep fighting.

    Always,

    Valor

He set down the pen and closed the journal. There was more he wanted to say. More he needed to say, but he couldn’t. Not yet.

There was still hope that he might be able to tell her face to face, one day soon.
