Distinguishing Features
Surreal is radiantly beautiful, with glowing skin, stormy blue-grey eyes and a full, sweetly curved body. Yet she is both patently unaware of her beauty and uses no ploys to attract or enhance it. She usually has a book in her hands, pencil stuck behind her ear, and a bit of ink or chalk on her face. She has large, sorrow-filled eyes that carry both strength, and pain.

She has pretty, sensitive ears and is slightly nearsighted. She prefers a monocle to glasses.

Her smile is pensive, soothing, or accepting at need, and she smells of cherrywood, leather, spiced ink and incense. She can light up with true joy when the discussion moves to books and tales, and away from the sorrow and grief crushing Dea al Mon. She has a soft, melodic voice, moves quietly, as befits a Priestess,

Personality

Personality:

Battered.

Surreal has been battered into submission not by a cruel family but by a cruel life. She finds peace and hope mostly in her fantasy worlds, in her ancient tomes or poetry. When she does come back to the here-and-now, it is to work furiously and fiercely on another scrap of lore brought to her from the Territory High Priestess' adventures. She restores and rescues any tiny scrap of knowledge, then tries to stitch it into place in the vast, empty cavern that holds the echoes of what used to be an impressive religious library.

The Religious Studies section of her Library. Err, Temple, is rather empty, but the rest is full of a wide assortment of books and scrolls, with a particularly robust section of romance and fantasy. It is in this section that she hides to work on her own books or poetry, or to simply read and try to renew her spirits.

Every time she has seen anyone make progress on the rediscovery of old lore, or in understanding the Waste, something terrible has happened. Natural disasters, mostly, but also deaths and, on one occasion, a cruel theft of a half-chapter on spiritual malaise. Although Surreal read it, she was never gifted with perfect memory and cannot recall the precise details of the missing manuscript.

Surreal has become nearly as afraid of discovering new knowledge as of not; she has very few people left to sacrifice to the greater good, and selfishly wishes that they might be spared. The flickering flame of her courage and faith, her determined opposition to the cruel advances of the Brood, and her frustration with the new, inexplicable dangers facing Priestesses in the Ebon Wood, is what keeps her working on the lost lore.

She feels opposition at every turn, but cannot identify if it is spiritual or physical in nature, a precise personality or merely the longer, crueler working out of Witch's Will. On her bad days, she questions if it is not in fact Mother Night herself damning the Dea al Mon for standing apart so long. Too much has gone wrong, too many people died on the cusp of knowledge for there to be no enemy to face, no will behind it. This unseen enemy, as much as the loss of so many whom she loved so deeply, has led to not merely some of her best poetry, but to her reluctance now to take risk.

Underneath the pain and fear, lies a true idealist. She is always searching for hope, for the faintest flicker of good in even the worst of people. Part of her utterly rebels at the notion that a disease or illness can come between a child of the Ebon Wood and Mother Night. Only an act of will, a conscious refusal to believe should be able to do that. So she is fundamentally at odds with the notion that this is a true disease. She believes it to be an attack, like a subtle Widow's Web only woven in the body, not the mind.

She is reserved with people, even those she knows well. It is not so much shyness as a willingness to let others be who they are, without putting demands on them. This makes her a restful companion, and a true strength to the hurting. She has no need to fill silences with words for the shear sake of noise. But it can also lead to people assuming she is putting walls up when she is merely declining to breach another's privacy.

Surreal is a person too sensitive and too idealistic to endure well in the current strife; she is always searching for honor, beauty, principle, harmony, longing for that one noble sacrifice and the triumph of love over evil or self interest that will put things right within the Ebon World. But the real world doesn't offer such simple, final solutions and she finds herself wearing down with each loss.

She is a gifted speaker, able to speak eloquently about deeply spiritual matters, loss or the search for honor; but the very essence or purpose of small talk escapes her, and if you ask her how she is, you will either receive silence or the truth, rather than a polite brush off. She is an accomplished poet, though those privileged to read her work are few. She writes novels that she has published, and she varies wildly between horridly embarrassed that so much of her soul is on display, and being quite proud of how well received they have been.

Likes:
  • 1 Books. She loves book, passionately. As a librarian, she has learned to bind books, illuminate them and even a touch of calligraphy for restoring or copying older works. As a Priestess she has mastered the ancient runes of the Dea al Mon, as well as memorized a truly prodigious number of quotes, poems and sermons. While she understands that many people prefer a good memory Crystal (and for songs she quite agrees!), she prefers the feel and heft of a well-made, leather-bound book. She even writes both novels and poetry. (Romance novels, mostly, where the good guys win, true love conquers all and any disease is defeated by a kiss. Her poetry is akin to Woodsworth)
  • 2 Helping. When she can help someone to grow or heal, even to grieve, she feels a strong sense of accomplishment and purpose. So much of her higher purpose has been twisted or distorted, rendered hopeless, that these smaller victories ease her.
  • 3 Rakal. Ok, so it's complicated. And it's not like they have a ...thing. Or anything. But she likes him. Both sides of him, the dedicated scholar and the wild Warlord-Prince. She finds those times when he looses himself to the rut both terrifying and freeing; she has no room to think of herself, only of him and his needs. It is exhausting and risky, but oddly healing; a period of rest and rejuvenation for her soul, if not her body. Those times when he just picks a quiet place in the library to read, or when they sit and discuss their favorite novel or author have their own magic; it is a place where both agree to NOT invite in the bigger world and its insolvable problems. For reasons she still doesn't know, he carries a grief and tension in him that reminds her of her own fears and losses. Over the years, they have crafted a carful choreography to their odd relationship, and she is ever and always gentle with him. And somewhere, in the back of her mind, she is just daring Mother Night or the Brood to take him away. He wears the Ebon-Gray, and some tiny speck of hope within her refuses to allow that he, too, is vulnerable.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Emotional Blackmail. Surreal will be done grieving when she is done grieving, thank you. Whether against herself or anyone else, she hates when people employ unfair emotional threats to gain what they want. Ask, explain and either be denied or accepted.
  • 2 Loud people. Loud anything, really. Loud noises, thunder storms and people who can't keep their voices down all get under her skin very quickly. Probably the worst is loud, angry people.
  • 3 deliberate harm. The world is painful and difficult enough without causing people to hurt on purpose. The difficulties of life will temper others without any great need to add to their pain or scars. And she considers denying people the right to feel to be deliberate harm. Just as she won't be told it's wrong to hurt or be sad over those lost, she won't tolerate someone telling anther who to love, or that they shouldn't fear. While self-restrain over actions might still be necessary, that is a different problem than invalidating feelings, or hurting another creature for gain. (She does not even eat meat)

    Fears:
  • 1 Floods. In her brief lifespan, the Temple she tends has faced just about every natural disaster. Earthquakes, Fires, Floods, even a Craft-induced building collapse (Rakal wasn't always as controlled as he is now). Brood attackers and the occasional angry Dea al Mon, even swarms of locusts and once a very distinctive and bizarre rain of frogs. But the worst to clean up, and the cruelest without measure was the flooding. Books are lovely, fragile things; fire is a final death, but water soaking makes you hope and pray for the salvation of each individual page. The torment of trying to rescue the bottom floor's contents lasted for more than a year. Lesser disasters she can handle with equanimity but floods are a torment. Her fear is closer to a panic attack brought on by stress than a phobia, yet it is so strong that she cannot swim and barely handles the duties of her Temple that bring her near to the river and lake it overlooks.
  • 2 Public Speaking. For all she is a Priestess, those parts of her Caste that require her to address large groups of people are a constant trial. She hates so much focus being on her, and hates almost as much the inevitable rush of strangers into her personal space when she is done. It is as if some aspect of being a Priestess makes some strangers think they have a right to every moment of her time. The cloying, emotional demands after a speaking engagement are nearly as bad as the event itself.
  • 3 Failing. She feels the pull of despair, the seductive lure of letting go all morals and conscious and becoming what she hates. It isn't so much a fear that she won't save the Dea al Mon; she isn't certain they can be. It is that she fears she will embrace the Brood in a fit of rage and not be able to undo it. The evil she could do, the harm she would wreak with her knowledge of people is profound, and she fears that violent, selfish side of her that is tired of hurting, and willing to inflict that pain on others just to lessen her own burden.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Mirage. The Essence, or an echo of the spirit, of Surreal's twin seems to sleep within her staff. Perhaps it is an actual spirit, or really her sister, or just an echo placed there through death or blood magic, but there is something otherworldly and strange about her staff. It can act as a focus for her mediation, and when she uses it as a focus for her shielding spells, she can Sheild large areas (like 10 - 20 foot half dome, no smaller) and her Light spell summons a pure, brilliant white light that can illuminate an entire clearing. Everything has a price, and her staff seems to have the unnerving need to have it used in a violent fashion in order to recharge it.
  • 2 Purity of Spirit: It is not that she is better than other Priestesses; more righteous or more holy. But she has a honed, powerful ability to put aside her own self and ego, to truly become a channel for the Darkness, which allows her to reflect the scintillating, exquisite ideal of the Dea al Mon rather then merely her own nature. The result is that when she is performing her Priestess Craft, specifically the ones that would rouse the attention of the malevolent entity which lurks within the Darkness, she can sometimes block and foil it, so that those within her care are not attacked by it.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Death. She cannot and will not take a life, not even to defend her own. She has many ways of defending herself that are not fatal, and will use all of them. But she won't kill; she does not even eat meat. Because of this compulsion, she cannot use Craft to kill, nor learn Death spells, finishing spells nor aim Powerbolts at living creatures.
  • 2 Spatial Craft. Surreal struggles with every aspect of Spatial Craft. She feels lost and disoriented when faced with travel via the Winds, and struggles with long distance communications, requiring a focus at both for herself and the person she is talking to (not unlike a palantir). In order to scry, Surreal must use the best of materials and make a full, 24-hour ritual of it. She still cannot seem to both sense the Winds strongly enough to Ride them and keep from becoming disoriented. She has never mastered Tracking Craft at all.

    History:

    Spoiler: Timeline (click to show/hide)
    Spoiler: Temple (click to show/hide)

Surreal is dedicated to preserving the Sacred Leaf Temple, in Esgarth. The actual Shrine is rather small, with most of the buildings housing a lively and well-used library. The library is not only stocked with religious texts, but boasts a diverse collection, as there is no way to better understand and cherish life than to both read and write about it. The Temple seems to be under constant assault, from random attacks and nature itself seeming to rise up against it. The last six years or so have been poignantly, painfully brutal. Between wiling service to the Ebon Guard and the assaults, few adult, able-bodied males remain at the Temple.

Surreal's grandmother Promise was notable in that she was just on the cusp of her Birthright when the Purge struck. At eight years old, she was amongst the 'best trained' of the surviving baby Priestesses. As such, she sought throughout her life for private journals, keepsakes, and especially (critically) hidden instruction, words of wisdom and idle speculations scribbled into the margins and spines of books owned not merely by priestesses by birth, but most especially those who were trained to the Craft. She spent her life collecting these works, in whatever shape or of whatever nature she could find. It was her daughter she tasked with being a librarian. But Surreal's parents, not terribly scholastic, chose instead to mostly collect new lore. As such, both her grandmother and her parents endured for many years without coming to the attention of Nemesis.

Surreal's older sister, the Healer Starfall, was 22 when the twins Surreal (a Priestess) and Mirage (a witch) were born. Surreal was immediately trained to caretake the Temple. Mirage in the path of Librarian. Both sisters took eagerly to their fates, and while they quarreled as any might, they still worked hand in hand flawlessly. Surreal loved the book learning and lore of a librarian almost as much as her Priestess training, and the outgoing Mirage a necessary aid to the introverted Surreal.

Surreal's birthright was surprising and powerful Purple Dusk, while her twin sister Mirage was gifted with a Tiger Eye.

Surreal and Mirage were 15 when Kassel fell. It changed them both; changed them from simply willing to follow in their mother and grandmother's footsteps too needing to help. Surreal studied deeper knowledge and philosophy, how to bind and protect books, even illumination and calligraphy. Mirage studied combat craft, archery and staff work. Both girls determined to join the Red Cloaks when they were of age, and help protect people directly. This was viewed with unease by their family, but not actively opposed at first. Mirage, after all, was required to go. But Surreal was slowly and relentlessly turned away from the path, even though she argued vehemently to join the Holy Matrons.

183 - the year of Snow
Their Virgin Nights happened only days apart, with Temple-Captain Strike being chosen as well-known to both girls and highly trusted. This year saw the worst snowstorm in recorded history at the Temple, and damaged several buildings. But it was only the first of several disasters for this year. Their offerings, like their Birthright Ceremonies, were overseen by their grandmother, Promise. Surreal's Offering resulted in a Sapphire. Mirage's Offering gifted her with a Summer Sky. Mirage joined the Red Cloaks, and found great joy in the physically demanding and often dangerous work.

184 - The Year of Fire
Surreal was lonely, miserable and doubting herself for the first time. She retreated into study, and began writing poetry and eventually novels herself. She found a power and welcome hope in penning even the silliest romance. This year, a terrible fire threatened to burn down their temple. Her grandmother, Promise, died trying to save sacred texts.

185 - The year of Flood
When Surreal was 20, the lake flooded the bottom two floors of the library (the lower basement levels). She was trapped for a time, and conceived both a fear of floods and swimming. She spent a long, painful two years trying to salvage what she could from the damage, but books don't do well with water and mud. When she was working on her clean-up and repair program, she met Rakal for the first time. He was a sweet, burdened boy of 16, carrying the terrifying power of the Red Birthright. She quickly discovered he wasn't here to study or worship, but to escape for a time. The two bonded over stories and novels, plot devices and character hooks. He was the first to read her works when she decided to publish, and is still her favorite proof-reader. She even forgave him when in his willingness to help try to fix up her battered Temple, he knocked a few walls down.

Rakal put them back up, of course; he was always well mannered. This same year Surreal was courted by Ebon Guard Master Chief Dauntless. Both were very faithful, very much in love and had a beautiful, storybook wedding.

186 - Year of the Earthquake
By 21, Surreal was happily married, her 17-year-old friend Rakal was a regular visitor and she even met his sister, Scion. The Blood female was also a huge fan of books and reading, but seemed to more enjoy fighting off Brood attacks. During one of these attacks, the Temple-Captain Surreal had known for most of her life was killed. Earthquakes destroyed a lower room with rare scrolls, and decimated a tower.

    187 - Year of Frogs
At 22, the long, slow slide to dismay truly began. The painful loss of the Temple-Captain had been but practice. Her husband was declared dead, lost in the line of duty. She was devastated, finding little solace in writing or her duties. Her friend, Rakal, changed irrevocably that year as well. He was only just 18, and suffered his first Rut. Surreal was his focus, startling and unexpected as that was. Because of her marriage she was almost prepared and ready. Because of her husband's loss, she was yielding enough to survive what she had not been ready for. And between the two, somewhere in those dark hours of terrifying yet thrilling passion she found a spark of renewal. Of faith that she could survive, and that even in Rakal's darkest moments he did not unleash the terrible wrath of his Offering. The Ebon-Grey. The rain of frogs did very little actual damage but was recorded as yet another anomaly. To the Temple denizens, it was the Year of the Frog.

    188 - Year of Lightening
At 23, Surreal's beloved sister Mirage finished her five years of mandatory service to the Red Cloaks, but intended to return at the end of her leave. Mirage wanted nothing to do with Temple life. While she was home long enough to meet and pursue Rakal, she spent most of her leave assisting their mother and father. Their parents had embarked upon a systematic collection of lost lore. During that very first mission with her parents, Mirage was killed. While Surreal's parents never explained, something about the nature of Mirage's death gave her parents critical information about the troublesome, angry spirits. They mourned her death, but clearly counted it worth the cost. Surreal's parents were driven to a frenzy of study and exploration, leaving behind Mirage's staff but unwilling to share their new discovery until they had confirmed it. Even their warded notes were destroyed in a brutal lightning strike that punctured through the entire Library Complex. Surreal's uncharacteristic, grief-fueled rage that made her share being denied this knowledge with Rakal. That is likely why she is still alive.

Surreal was and is the caretaker of this knowledge, and works at organizing the scraps and pieces Journey, Apple and Innocent collected. A true archivist and scholar, Surreal matches scraps and fragments, sometimes utilizing the skills of Solace to help mend and repair a manuscript one tedious paragraph at a time.

    189 - Year of Mud
Unkown to Surreal or Rakal, Nemesis arranged for the death of her parents because of what they had discovered. Surreal was only 24 when faced with this double tragedy. The mudslides that threatened her home seemed merely a counterpoint to the despair settling deeply within Surreal. To come so close, and sacrifice so much, only to have it all be in vain shattered and battered the young priestess nearly to death.

    190 - Year of Winds
When Surreal was 25, her ex-husband, believed dead for years, was spotted amongst the Brood. She wept in Rakal's arms for hours. Protector, sister, mother, father, husband all devoured in the six short years she had known Rakal. Violent storms raged around the temple, as if in reflection of her own grief. Two more towers destroyed.

    191 - Year of Seekers
In 191, the decision is made to open the borders and send forth the Seekers. A final blow to her faith and hope, the admission that no one at all believes they can save themselves. A tiny, stubborn spark within won't quit trying. Won't walk away from the strange thing Mirage's staff has become or the ancient, dangerous knowledge so many have died to collect.

    Character in Play:

Surreal glanced behind her as the familiar, steady cadence of Rakal's footfalls faltered. She paused, one hand resetting on the tall, wheeled ladder she pushed before her. It's top was fastened to the long, sinuously curving bookshelf. His features, always sharp and a touch alien, today seemed predatory. His attention, usually both kind and polite, was unnervingly intense. Rakal's blazing golden eyes never softened, never eased; even now they were fastened to her with sufficient intensity to make her uneasy. He was terribly tall, but not normally looming.

    Today, Rakal loomed.

Rakal's presence was unfurled in a way Surreal had not seen before; if it was anyone but Rakal she would assume he wished to ask her out. But not him; he was unnervingly asexual, allowing not one hint of that part of his nature near to her. Sex, combat, duty and religion were topics the two avoided by mutual consent. Sometimes he came to the library so tangled up with whatever unnamed grief haunted him that he could barely breathe, yet it was nothing like this lurking tension that made every inch of his 6'6 height apparent to her, or made her subconsciously watch the precise positioning of his hands.

Hands already hardened by years of brutal practice though Rakal was only 18, just past his Offering. Was that terrible weight what burdened him today? Surreal offered a tentative, sorrow tinged smile, and extended her hand up and to the right, pointing before she took hold of the ladder. She knew the secret to relaxing his tense shoulders and bringing a smile or a joke to his lips. He had the same weakness she did. Books.

Here, deep in the fiction section, right where the all the lovely philosophies and social sciences disguised as fantasy lurked, was the novel she was looking for. Surreal had saved it for this, Rakal's first visit after his Offering. "The book I was saving for you is here. It is called Courage's Price, and is set at the very dawn of the Blood. When we were just learning to use Craft at all." Some instinct made her not want to turn her back on him. Not fear exactly. A whiff of unfamiliar desire, perhaps? She thought not, not Rakal.

Their eyes locked, and Rakal did smile, though it wasn't soothing. Surreal spun and began to climb the ladder, retreating in confusion. This wasn't right; she was the widow, he the one just past his offering. It shouldn't be her heart pounding and her mind veering into inappropriate thoughts. She got no more than two steps up the ladder before his hands wrapped around her waist, trapping her. His voice was a low, sensual purr against her ear, with a terrifying bite of command in it.

    "Surreal ... Turn around."
