Personality

Personality: Solstice is much like the roots of her name, an aspect of her personality that came along the more she studied and grew. The word “solstice” means “sun stand still.” She is like that moment of eternal night, when the sun may never rise again. She is wintry, cold, calculating. To many, she is unapproachable and frigid. She is stern, resolute, unfeeling. She hands down her judgements with finality, showing no remorse or regret, and while many outside of her district view her as heavy handed, those within realize how even and fair she is. They can count on the same consequences, rulings, and outcomes every time. She is predictable but in being that, she is not weak. Leniency is not something Solstice grants. She makes certain everyone understands the rules so that infractions and misunderstandings are rare.

Because she follows so many things by the book, she expects to be justly rewarded and promoted by that same merit. She is ambitious but not overreaching. She is proud but not haughty. She expects to reach certain milestones and adjusts her plans (after a private tantrum) accordingly if that doesn’t happen. To her, life is carefully mapped out, from start until the unknown finish, and she expects to reach her goals with little difficulty.

In private, Solstice is a far more approachable person, though she tends to still keep her feelings and secrets close. Her Triangle knows more about the woman behind the throne but her Seer knows more. In private, Solstice is willing to give more things consideration, if the logic prevails, but do not expect her to radically change her mind. Fun and love are unknown concepts to her. If she takes enjoyment in anything at all, it is in private and not known to others. Her males have come to realize that she may never show warmth or affection but know that she will ruthlessly defend them nonetheless. Her people come first, because that is where her goals also align.

Likes:
  • 1 - Wild things/wilderness. The howl of the wolf. The cry of the falcon. These sights and sounds reach Solstice on a level people cannot. She relates most to animals, with their feral yet simpler ways and sense of justice.
  • 2 - Gentle touch. This is NOT something that is public knowledge. Stemming from her lack of affection in her childhood, Solstice still craves physical touch from time to time. A hand resting on her shoulder, a brief touch of a hand on hers...these quick, tiny, and mostly unnoticed actions keep at bay a loneliness she has carried all of these years.
  • 3 - Music. Solstice enjoys going to concerts and performances and encourages music to be taught to all youngsters. Her patronage for the arts comes out of a childhood love of them, the only emotional outlet she was allowed to have.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Parties. Parties involve small talk, inane babbling, boring conversation. While she can often glean who is maneuvering into what different position of power during these functions, she would rather do it in some other way besides wading through the aristo arrogance that decorates events like this.
  • 2 - Other Queens. Solstice sees the flaws and failings of other Queens brightly and despises having to deal with them. They are weak, she is strong. They will fail, she will not. She tends to view most of them, aside from Gale Galoneth, as flighty or stupid, and undeserving of this hallowed caste.
  • 3 - The Brood. This is a dislike bordering on hatred. How could anyone willingly become an abomination or body and soul? Death should have been the only option to those who became Brood and death is what Solstice will give to any that come in her territory.
Fears:
  • 1 - Contracting the Waste. Solstice knows that her lack of emotion, her preference to keep others out, can be rumored as the start of the Waste. While she doesn’t listen to those rumors, she fears falling to the Waste because it will destroy her carefully laid plans and promotions.
  • 2 - Failing to advance higher. Despite her parents being dead, their voices live clearly in Solstice’s head. She must succeed, she must advance, she must be a good girl and a good Queen.
  • 3 -Breaking her Jewels. Solstice nearly shattered her Jewels once as a child because she was pushing herself too hard. Now, she knows better, but she will never forget that awful moment of realizing how close to cutting herself off from her strength she came.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Aural Shielding. Being a woman of secrets and keeping people out, this comes as an added bonus. No one needs to know when she cries, if she cries at all, and no one needs to hear her doubt herself. Her private quarters are ALWAYS shielded.
  • 2 - Breaking Jewels. She’s not pleased with this strength but as a Queen, it is needed. Her will must be enforced. Solstice has learned how to balance the pain of breaking with the process. It’s about as merciful as she gets.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Whimsy Craft. Solstice thinks this type of Craft is a waste of Jewel power and refuses to learn anything about it.
  • 2 - Emotional Manipulation. This would come in handy if Solstice ever realized how it could be used in her favor. As it stands, like anything regarding emotions, she tends to run from it instead of learning it.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Evanescence Moriwen, Rose to Purple Dusk Healer (deceased at age 40)
Father: Gauntlet Moriwen, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Warlord Prince (deceased at age 47)
Siblings: brother Dagger Moriwen, Yellow to Tiger Eye Warlord Prince (age 40, born 154 AP)
Children: Inheritance, Rose to Purple Dusk Queen (age 22, born 172 AP); Scimitar, Tiger Eye later to Summer Sky Prince (age 15, born 179 AP)

History:
Solstice’s childhood was not a happy, warm one.

Her parents showed love in the form of approval. Solstice was expected to outperform others in her class, others in her caste, on a consistent basis. While that little girl craved to be held and cuddled, she instead had to survive on frozen smiles and high praise. She eventually learned to conceal her feelings from the world, since the few times she voiced them, she was met with misunderstanding or judgement. Ill adjusted, Solstice emotionally shut down and became little more than an automaton in the eyes of others.

Receiving her Summer Sky Birthright did not ensure Solstice being selected to rule since there was a plethora of Queens. And so, her parents pushed her harder. The girl survived on little sleep in an effort to learn more history, more politics, more words, more public speaking, more Craft, more Protocol, more everything. If she ever wished she could join the other kids in playing, it was a wish she kept to herself. The only interruption to this cold existence was music. Solstice’s parents expected her to be involved in the arts in some manner, though, as all things, it was because of societal expectations rather than the joy of it. Still, Solstice enjoyed playing both violin and reed pipes. She would have practiced every day if she had been allowed but sadly music could only take up so much of her time.

This emotional disconnect from the vibrant world around her became both under attack and cemented when her parents, traveling to a party in Kassel, were killed in a Brood attack when she was fifteen. Now free to express herself, Solstice discovered the only emotions she was able to summon forth were a soul-rending grief and a dark despair. Afraid that she would fail for all time because of this upheaval, she locked away those emotions, as well as joy and hope, and redoubled her efforts to maintain her course.

But there was an unexpected consequence of Solstice’s Virgin Night. In her fear over the entire ordeal, she had forgotten to take a contraceptive brew, and her partner lied about taking his. A very terrified Solstice discovered her pregnancy a few weeks later. At first, she was committed to aborting, but once she reined in her panic, she decided that this may be the best (and only) time to have a child, because a child would be expected of her eventually.

Perhaps because of these events, after her daughter Inheritance was born, Solstice only descended to an Opal, rather than a full Descent. This was personally quite disappointing because she expected a Green, but Solstice eventually learned to accept her Jewels. In a poetic way, they reflected her icy exterior. She embraced that. Whatever failings Solstice believed she had, she would make certain her daughter did not share. Her daughter was held like Solstice wished she had been held. But Solstice’s upbringing also meant that Inheritance received the same sort -- she had to perform. Solstice watched as, over the years, her initially warm relationship with her daughter became closer to something Solstice had experienced with her own mother. And hated. But unable to stop it, Solstice, instead, adjusted her emotions and mannerisms towards Inheritance, shutting down to prevent further harm.

Throughout all of this, Solstice’s hard work began to pay off. She was trained first as a village Queen, and then, due to her focus and wit, moved into District Queen. She remade Oberaula almost entirely. Where the previous Queen had been far too lenient -- not patrolling the borders, not enforcing the law -- Solstice swung the pendulum in the other direction. Her Court worked hard, unceasingly. And if anyone had reason to complain about these harsh changes, they had only to look at the results to know that it was actually working. Crop yield increased, the economy thrived, new jobs were created, the towns grew in population and size.

Solstice again felt the pressure of matching this outward wealth within her own life. She allowed her Master of the Guard to impregnate her and bore a son she named Scimitar. She had been hoping for another daughter and was disappointed. She did her best to show the boy love, but, like with Inheritance, she failed, and the same relationship she developed with her daughter became the same as with her son.

To push away the pain of failing as a mother, Solstice threw herself into her work even more. To her people, she appeared to be doing fine as both leader and mother, since Inheritance followed her on outings to learn the ways of a Queen. But in private, all was not well, though Solstice refused to admit anything. Eventually, that pain, too, became locked away in that frozen core within her.

She thought that her diligent work was going to pay off but recently, the rug has been pulled out from underneath her, and what should have been awarded to her has instead been given to an untried Queen, who Solstice sees only as spreading her legs to get to the top.

Character in Play:
They brought him before in spelled cuffs, as was usual. He sported a cut on his lip, most likely received when he had tried to resist arrest. His clothes were rumpled from sleeping in the cell. His eyes burned a fury defiance as he gazed upon her from where she sat motionless upon her small throne.

He could not have been more than sixteen.

“Read the charges,” Solstice commanded in the cold, flat, emotionless tone that accompanied her reputation. Her Master of the Guard held the boy in place. Her Steward called in a sheaf of paper with the allegations. Theft. Such a simple, yet weighted word. The boy did not drop that fiery gaze as Solstice held his eyes. Such defiance. No remorse. While her Steward elaborated upon the events leading up to this small trial, Solstice tried not to think about her own young son, Scimitar, who would be reaching a stubborn age such as this in a few short years. Or her daughter, Inheritance, who had surpassed this age but still butted heads with her mother, still rejected what little bond Solstice tried to maintain.

This was someone’s son. And yet, Solstice, with her frozen heart, saw him only as a criminal.

It did not help the boy’s case, nor would it, that he showed no apology for his actions. When her Steward finished reading, Solstice lifted her chin just slightly. “The penalty for burglary is the loss of a hand,” she decreed. “This is the Queen’s Justice.”

As expected, the moment her Master of the Guard, who was a man so faithful to her that Solstice had agreed to bear his seed for nine long months, drew his sword to enact her will, someone -- most likely a relative of the boy’s -- cried out. “He is but a child! A teenager! You cannot mean to--” The voice was interrupted as Solstice held up one pale hand for silence.

She paused, ignoring whoever had spoken, and kept her gaze on the boy. “Do you understand the charges?” she asked him. Calm. Without emotion. The boy, a Warlord Prince, nodded sharply. Solstice waited a moment to see if he would say anything more and, when he didn’t, she said, “Do you understand the consequences?”

Defiant unto the last, this boy. He actually spit at her feet. Solstice was not surprised.

She motioned gracefully for two guards to assist in the matter, holding the boy down as he struggled to save his flesh from dismemberment and pain. The Court Healer stood nearby to seal the wound and preserve his life. Trials like these happened from time to time, as unpleasant as they were, but the rules were the rules. The people in Solstice’s District could count on the same consequences every time, hence why anyone rarely broke laws such as this anymore.

But there was always someone who thought they could get away with breaking the laws. And the burden, if it could be called that, fell to Solstice to be the hand of justice.

She hoped one day that she was not having this very same...conversation...with her own son.

Solstice nodded once to her waiting males. Her Master of the Guard lined up for a clean, merciful strike to the boy’s left hand. He paused for just a moment, waiting for his Lady’s final word.

“Then you deserve this fate,” she said. And she watched the sword fall.

I did! Just was covering bases, I think. Or making everything more confusing. Either way, it's on this thread and in the Feb Points Transaction thread too :D
