Appearance

Play By: Tricia Helfer
Distinguishing Features: She is a reasonably tall woman standing just under six feet without heels. This is a fact she appreciates during the encounters where she feels the need to be overbearing or domineering. A beautiful woman, Seraphim is in the prime of her life and shines with the vitality of a strong, healthy Widow. She is aristo in coloring and her bearing shows it keenly. After her promotion to Lady Sanguine, she is almost always in uniform or the color of the Red Cloaks. Seraphim is very rarely without her battle armor, even within the safety of the Black Castle.

Personality

Personality:

Born to the crème de la crème of aristos, Seraphim has been bred and pressured to be the absolute best. She learned from her earliest steps that she was aristo and that came with the expectations of power and prestige. Her mother and father were far from tender and affectionate but they were intelligent, driven. When Seraphim emerged from her childhood and Birthright she was a hard child, a young girl who looked at her peers and saw them lacking.

By the time she was a grown woman Seraphim had become an elitist. She was smart though and Seraphim did not alienate each Dea al Mon she didn’t consider pure enough. They were tools to be used, tools for her to manipulate. Nevertheless, Seraphim had those she trusted, friends, lovers, men and women she’d judged worthy of her time and friendship. To many she is distant and chilly, spending her time leading the Red Cloaks and supporting her secret research.

Seraphim surrounds herself with the best so she can prove time and time again she is both talented and powerful. Her need to believe in her power can outweigh her need for human contact, for friends, for even family. From childhood she was instilled with a need for perfection and Seraphim works to achieve that every day. She is called callous and uncaring, and perhaps in many ways she is, but she is not cruel for no reason.

What she seeks for herself she pushes onto others, always working to make her Red Cloaks the best women they can be. During her rising time through the ranks she was known for the excellent warriors she trained, though those women would never call Seraphim a friend. The Black Widow doesn’t look for friends, she seeks out respect above all else, leaving her with a small collection of men and women who believe in her work, or believe in her ability to succeed, but likely both.

When she fights the passion of her caste truly comes out. Seraphim screams out her rage amidst the battles, her hair a crown of light as she lashes out with Craft and sword. Her blood pounds with the fury of a Blood woman as she unleashes her Craft and passion together. Decades admist the Red Cloaks make her a powerful fighter, one of the best, paired with the relics of Red Cloaks from years past. Like many who fight beside her, when the fury of a Blood woman is unleashed it is fearsome to behold.

From her caste Sera learned the ways of the mind. She twisted that knowledge and perfected the ability to change and manipulate memories. The Widow relies on her own strength of persona and Jewels before resorting to the manipulation of memories but she does not lose sleep over the act. It goes against all the Blood hold dear, forcing the manipulation of those memories hidden behind barriers, but Seraphim believes she does it for the greater good. Her personal advancement aside, she is the most suitable in her mind to be Lady Sanguine. To keep her secret she goes to many unholy lengths but to save Dea al Mon from the taint of the Brood, she would do anything.

Likes:
  • Bravery. Her life was devoted to the Red Cloaks after her nineteenth birthday and the gift of her Red. She dreamed of being a warrior, of being the warrior. While she learned to fight she came to respect and appreciate bravery. A woman could be powerful but being brave was different, harder, special. Seraphim can’t say she is the bravest woman she’s ever known but she sees that quality in her most dear Red Cloaks. For them, she strives to save Dea al Mon from the Waste and Brood.
  • Pomp and Ceremony. Raised by parents who relished the role of being aristos in Dea al Mon, Seraphim has seen her fair share of Ceremonies and Court Functions. Lady Sanguine is invited to the best parties and serves the First Circle. The girl in Seraphim fell in love with the parties, with the glittering masses and the sense that she belonged to them. Though she is a warrior the Lady Sanguine has been known to strike a cutting figure in red at the formal ceremonies of the Court. She’d never admit her girlish delight but she doesn’t miss a party unless it's an emergency.
  • The strength and prestige of the Red Cloaks. Seraphim’s life is the Red Cloaks. She is the woman that Dea al Mon turns to to keep them safe, to protect them at night. The Brood may have made that difficult but she is proud of her sister warriors, of the women of the Red Cloaks. Each woman in Dea al Mon who is not a Queen has known service and that provides a uniform foundation for anyone to relate to. Her greatest legacy will be what she achieves with the Red Cloaks and Seraphim is determined that they will remember her.
Dislikes:
  • Acting above your rank. Seraphim has been with the Red Cloaks for more than sixty years. The rank and role of the Red Cloaks is ingrained within her. Before her election as Lady Sanguine, she deferred and respected the orders of her superiors. Women who dare to act above or outside their rank are sanctioned and reprimanded without mercy. Mercy is not a term that Seraphim is on familiar terms with.
  • Not being respected for being an aristo. She was raised amidst the men and women like her, glowing blonde-silver hair, strong but beautiful. Every year of her life enforced the ideal that the aristos were created for ruling while the rest of Dea al Mon were to serve. Seraphim respects those outside the blonde beauty of aristos but she doesn’t tend to expect them to become leaders. Seraphim is prejudiced to promote those of aristo linage and it shows in her inner Circle, who are mainly comprised of other blonde aristo Witches.
  • Being unable to rest. As the Lady Sanguine she relishes her role. She is powerful, she is known, she is superior. She is not immortal though. The Waste and Brood keep her busy and she rarely has a moment for herself. Seraphim fought tooth and nail for her position but now that she has it, she misses the quiet moments to herself.
Fears:
  • Outsiders in Dea al Mon. As the woman in charge of the people of Dea al Mon and protecting and policing them, Seraphim feels very strongly on keeping that order. Their race bloomed as the warriors of the Blood, protecting the peace between Kindred and their human compatriots. They are the wall between Kaeleer and the Territories of the Kindred, even if the Kindred have retreated from Dea al Mon. Even talk of opening the borders sets Seraphim on edge, the fear of outsiders entering their holy woods. The risk of what outsiders could bring and do in Dea al Mon have set Seraphim to even watching those rare Long Lived from Dhemlan in Dea al Mon. The taint could have come from anywhere and no option is dismissed. So far though, Seraphim has only spoken against opening the borders. They are Dea al Mon, they can solve their problems.
  • The destruction of the Territory at the hands of the Waste and Brood. A decade ago the Brood were a fanatic cult. Now she has the taint of losing Kassel to the Brood. Choosing to abandon the Territory was the hardest thing she’s done, even though Gale and her Court were behind the motion. Ebon Guard and Red Cloaks had taken all those still hale and healthy out but the place was a barren war zone now. The Brood’s encroaching had made Seraphim desperate and she will go to any length to find a cure for the Waste, pressuring those she has working for her to bring in more specimens, to find the ever elusive cure.
  • Failing to leave a lasting impression. From birth she was set to make her way in the world, to be great and powerful. Seraphim is Lady Sanguine because she strove, fought and excelled. Her legacy shouldn’t be the Lady Sanguine who lost Dea al Mon to the Brood. She will be remembered for her successes, not her failures. If anything keeps her up at night more it is the knowledge that everything she does will reflect on her legacy. If anything makes her work longer hours, it is the knowledge that her name will be recorded in the allunals of the Dea al Mon, for better or for worse.
Craft Strengths:
  • Item Enhancement. When she was chosen as one of the possible successors to the Lady Sanguine, Seraphim began earnestly perfecting this art. The Red Cloaks are known for their weapons and armor, enhanced with Craft, heirlooms of the women who’d come before them. Seraphim’s Red is perfect for enhancing old blade and even adding Craft to new weapons. Though it is time consuming she has a day set aside each month to add her power to their collection, to enhance and refresh their holy relics.
  • Memory Manipulation. As a Widow she is a skilled manipulator of the mind. Seraphim doesn’t enter the twisted Kingdom, no, she pushes her way past the inner barriers and loses a web to obscure and change that which she wants hidden. Her Craft is invasive, it's a breach of the mind, but she is skilled in the usage. Going against those with Dark Jewels is more difficult, meaning she has to find them in a moment of Weakness, but Seraphim is crafty with her skill. Though the skill is powerful if she is interrupted the consequences can be dire for her target.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Poison Craft. Though she has a snaketooth she relies on the Widows within the Red Cloaks to provide the poisons she needs through her moontime and elsewhere. With her passion for the mind and the manipulation of memories Seraphim has rarely felt the need to use poisons to achieve her goals. Due to her lack of interest she hasn’t the ability to determine poisons in herself or others.
  • Subtle and Intricate Craft. Her Witchfires burn bright, unable to be diminished. If she moves something from across the room it comes flying at her, or away from her. Each touch of her Craft has the force of her full strength, nothing comes softly or easily. Even preservations spells act more like cement, unable to be broken early and lasting for years (meaning she has to have others preserve things for her).

History:

Seraphim lived her childhood in the shadow of grandeur. Her great-grandmother had been Lady Sanguine on her father’s side. Her mother’s side had a Lord Obsidian a few generations back as well as a cousin who’d been a Province Queen when Seraphim was young. She grew up to those stories, the life of privilege and the expectations that went along with it. Though her parents were neither as prestigious as she would later be, they instilled in their daughter a duty to be someone, to be important, to make them proud.

It was a relief to young Seraphim when she manifested her Black Widow caste. A reprieve from her parents need to see their daughter make something of herself for if nothing else she could join the Coven. She threw herself into the studies of the Widow if only because all her life she been pushed to be great, to live up to her Birthright and those who’d come before her. That pushing as a young girl manifested in a need to be better than her peers, not only in linage and aristo holdings, but in Craft and power. While she never managed to master the arts of poisons and their complexities, Seraphim excelled in the arts of the mind. Her teachers cautioned her though to be wary and smart in their applications, for what could be used to heal could so easily be twisted into something darker.

Seraphim, ever curious, experimented with that darker side of her Widow arts. It was fledgling memory manipulation when she started, first on her younger brother Eclipse and finally on those who served the Coven. Over the years she really perfected the art but her time with the Coven was the first place she explored the fine manipulation of memories through Widow craft. She truly perfected how to cover and manipulate memories, truly giving her an advantage for she could make those around her believe in her perfection even in the face of her failures.

After her Offering Seraphim joined the Red Cloaks, feeling Mother Night had given her a message. Equiped with her Red, she felt her life was easily and readily devoted to the Cloaks instead of the Coven. Her sisters didn’t acutely miss her but the Coven Leaders were sad to see her talent go. Seraphim excelled in her studies, she was devoted to her training and her body. Rarely was she without a task, without something to train. Even her superiors were impressed with out brazenly she went about perfecting her body, her Craft, her talent.

Seraphim achieved her success through hard work. She made mistakes though but if she was ever concerned with how her mistakes would reflect on her, she could mask the memory with her talent for the mind. When she started she was a novice but after only ten years with the Cloaks Seraphim had risen to the rank of Shieldwoman. Ten years later she was among the elite leaders of the Red Cloaks and a Captain. It was then she caught the eye of the Lady Sanguine before her, Prudence Revelin.

Prudence was not to the age of requirement but Prudence was a long term planner. The former Lady Sanguine chose her potential successors thirty years before she retired. Seraphim remembered the discussion because it was so frank and straightforward, Prudence explaining how she’d been Lady Sanguine for nearly a decade and wanted to begin planning for potential women to succeed her. There was a slight chance Prudence could be killed in her duties but it was more rare to see a Red Cloak killed than an Ebon Guard. Seraphim realized the woman was a tactician at heart, a battle master and she saw the potential for greatness. It was also the moment Seraphim realized she had competition.

The fight for superiority kept Seraphim busy and surprisingly happy for many years. Competing against the other chosen by Prudence was a battle of not only strength, but of wits, of composure and of determination. It was during those thirty years Seraphim mastered the art of memory altering as well as struck up a friendship from her childhood: Falx Rothilion.

Falx was not of the Red Cloaks but their brother organization, the Ebon Guard. He’d done well for himself, especially given he was not of pure aristo bloodlines. Seraphim hadn’t expected to go to him but hearing his name in the Circles of the Ebon Guard had reminded her of his usefulness as a child. When she’d asked him over for dinner they’d not hit it off romantically, no, they found they were very well suited partners. Falx’s morals were fluid and Seraphim refused to lose the battle for Lady Sanguine so they struck up a deal.

Falx made certain that her only true competitor was never to become Lady Sanguine.

The day Prudence resigned she informed the other Captains and Colonels of the Cloaks who would replace her. There was a vote but it had been an open competition; all the high ranking Red Cloaks knew that Seraphim was the best and most dedicated replacement for the Lady Sanguine.

Seraphim wrote a letter home the day she ascended to her role as Lady Sanguine. It was simple and spoke of the competitive environment she had grown up with:

Mother and Father,

I have been appointed Lady Sanguine. Please prepare a celebration in my honor.

Seraphim

P.S. Inform my siblings that there attendance is required.

Seraphim was seventy when she became Lady Sanguine. The Waste truly began to be a problem for Dea al Mon; a fact that was determined to challenge her in any way possible. Seraphim relied on those around her as much as herself to combat the Waste. In the first years any Red Cloak or Ebon Guard who fell to the Waste seemed like a blow against her honor. Even Prudence, a retired Red Cloak and her closest advisor, had no great suggestions on how to combat it.

It was years after the Waste started that Seraphim felt that it was the Priestesses to blame. Their caste was weak, but if they were the source, they could be the cure as well. She began a hidden program of rounding up any Waste stricken Priestess and containing her in a facility that Seraphim had built for the sole purpose of experimentation. Using her skills of the mind she erased the memories of the workers on the project as well as often time wiping the minds of those who she experimented on.

Seraphim was not alone in her workings though, she had Healers and a Red Cloak Priestess, a Holy Matron, assembled at the facility. Even those highest in the Red Cloaks were kept in the dark unless they were required. The only living soul beyond the Red Cloaks she had informed was Falx; she needed him to bring her more test subjects when her existing ones died, or progressed too deeply into the Brood.

Her first and seemingly only focus has been the destruction and eradication of the Waste and Brood. Dea al Mon is dying from the inside out and the Red Cloaks are her first line of defense. Seraphim would do anything to protect her country and often times does. For the Widow, any means will justify saving Dea al Mon from herself.

Character in Play:

He’d dare raise his voice to her because he felt guilty about his actions. The Priestess had been marked for death the moment she contracted the Waste. Seraphim had merely taken on the duty of seeing her killed while her Caste and illness possibly cured the rest of Dea al Mon. The Warlord hadn’t known the full scope of it but he’d known enough: he’d given them a woman who would never been seen again.

Seraphim was almost proud of the brazen idiot. He’d defied an order from his superior officer, maybe too late, but enough that the man had interrupted her and Falx. She imagined that Falx would punish him for that later, even if he had no recollection of the event. Falx was a useful tool and she kept it so that whatever he thought he may get out of her, it was never quite out of reach. It was a pleasant game for her, but more so, it kept her with test subjects.
Dominating his mind had been easy, even though she felt the fear and pain of the invasion. Red versus Purple Dusk, it was an effort, but nothing she hadn’t trained herself for. Falx had stood by impassively while one moment the man, Claymore, had been shouting at them and the next he’d been quite, lost, his gaze unfocused even though his mind fought against her.

Red blazed at her chest as she called in a strip of leather. It was of simple make, a bracelet that seemed so mundane but pulsed with the power and promise of her Red, of her Widow Craft. She smiled at Falx, sharp and deadly. Sera told him to leave and expected him to obey. It was interesting to watch the play of microexpressions, to see how he didn’t want to leave but would obey her because she required it of him. As a small gift, she gave him a softer smile, nothing that was truly warm, but spoke of the promise that maybe, just maybe, she’d have him after all.

Claymore still fought against her, charing within his mind in an attempt to force her out. Seraphim was the master of this though. When she wrapped the leather around his wrist, touching him as little as possible, all that fighting stopped. Webs she’d woven in advance spread out through his mind, opening the doors of secrets and memories alike. She had places to be within the next hour so she ignored the juicy tidbits and focused on the task at hand.

Where once there was the memory of a Priestess kidnapped, Seraphim replaced it with a memory of a dead Priestess, Waste stricken. The visage of the woman didn’t need to change but she firmly crafted the memory that she was completely and  irrevocably dead. Claymore even bent over and checked for a pulse, her body so fresh, but nothing greeted him in the new memory.

That was the harder one. For the other memories she merely removed them, took them out and clipped Falx and Seraphim’s requests from his mind. With the memory all his emotions had been attached to changed his mind shouldn’t go looking for the other ones. It was better for her if Claymore thought they’d never spoken, never shared a conversation. She already had Falx in the guards and didn’t need one of his lackeys reporting to her as well.

When she was done Seraphim took the bracelet off, the power and energy dead but the device would be useful again. Slowly she backed out of his mind, careful to not disturb any other memories. She’d learned the more she changed the harder it was to control the outcome. Simple changes, they were always easier. Before she closed Claymore’s mind she laid in a gentle compulsion, a reasonable command: return to work.

With the compulsion laid she closed his mind, released her Red Jeweled hold and waited. It took a minute for him to come around but when he did, Claymore didn’t even speak to her before he left. One moment he looked around and the next he turned about to leave. It was then that she truly smiled, proud and happy. It was a job well done and the man wouldn’t bother her again.
