Distinguishing Features
Haunted, captivating eyes; unearthly voice. Rich blond hair, gleaming like fine whiskey poured over ice. Sun-kissed, rose-opal skin; delicate pink lips that curve into a tentative or sweetly endearing smile only rarely. Agile and graceful, with more strength than is normal for a Queen. Her skin is chapped and wind roughed. She smells of gentle soap and lemon liniment. She bears burn scars upon her feet and lower legs.

Personality

Personality:

Requiem is a complex person who strives to be simple. She holds deep mystery in her soul, and suffers with an inability to fit into the standard role of Queens. She loves the earth and growing thing, much as any Queen might, but instead of her Gift lying patiently and invisibly in the earth for month, years or decades after she blesses it as some Queens manage, her Gifting is wild and immediate, with beautiful, even luxurious growth sprouting forth at once.

It can be quite embarrassing, and devastating to the land if it grows in the wrong time of year.

All Queens are sacred and much adored, but the favored person of her family was universally the rare and precious Priestess. Journey’s tutelage and graceful piety shaped the young Queen every bit as much as the fierce Warlord Prince and Black Window twins, or her Healer sisters. But it was the quietly brave, deeply thoughtful Lynx, her youngest sibling, who has always been closest to her.

Since her sister Innocent joined the Red Cloaks, Requiem has romanticized soldiers. Chivalry, honor, loyalty and courage are traits she strives to express, and greatly admires. Her rare opportunity to move and work along side them is fulfilling, yet makes her painfully aware she’ll never wholly belong with them.

A romantic at heart, she feels that she will never find her place until she’s been tested to destruction. She believes that poetry and song heal the soul even without Craft, and that people are deeply, inherently good unless twisted by the events of their lives to evil. The pendulum of this belief is that all evil and cruelty is a conscious choice, and should be treated as such. This can make her very cold and harsh when she must render judgment, even upon a friend who failed her, or herself.

She has a stifled rage and grief, masked behind the calm grace that Dea al Mon expects of a Queen. It shows in spikes of a deep temper, and her refusal to be drawn into pointless argument or the petty cruelty of Court rivalries. She does not trust herself, should she engage in such activities. Even more, she feels that it tarnishes who she is, to pressure anyone. The Power of a Queen is inborn, not in their Craft but in their nature and very presence. Any sort of deep conflict feels like bullying, to her. People will do the right thing, because it is right, if only you leave them alone.

Likes:
  • 1 Her Guard. Requiem travels regularly into unsafe areas, and has already seen vastly more combat unfold than most Queens see in a lifetime. She treasures the 13 men and women who guard her, and strives to tend to them and their families, if they have no chosen or Bonded Queen of their own.
  • 2 Song. She has an unearthly beautiful voice, and takes vast delight in song and music of all sorts. She adores the liturgies of Temples as well as the nearly-lost oral traditions of her people.
  • 3 Inner Strength. Even more than physical strength, she admires a person who can be composed in the face of their fears, strong even in defeat, calm in a crisis. Grace under pressure is something she strives for and admires in others.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Destroying Mature Plants. Anytime anyone puts in a road, destroys a tree or established bush, it is physically painful for her. She has an immediate need to repair the damage. This causes her trouble when she is in the field.
  • 2 Fights. From physical combat that she is barred from participating in, to screaming fights, or the more deadly verbal destruction of a Court-trained enemy, she despises conflict of all sorts. She is more likely to simply leave, then to directly confront anyone. Not because she is mild tempered, but because she becomes fiercely angry and yet her culture allows no proper expression of a Queen’s wrath.
  • 3 Contempt for Healers/Hearth witches. Contempt for any Caste irritates her, but none so much as the Casteless treating Healers and Hearthwitches worse than they would a Jeweless blood. Both Castes, like the Black Widow, take a lifetime of devoted study to master, and in her opinion should be treated accordingly. Just because they aren’t known for twisting your head off if you irritate them does not mean they won’t.

    Fears:
  • 1 Fire. Caught in a fire when young, she is both scarred and frightened by open flame. She will put one out, whenever she is confronted with one. She cannot cook. She cannot control witchfire or summon fire to light things because of this fear.
  • 2 Public Speaking. When she needs to, it is usually either to inspire her Guard, comfort them after a tragic loss, or speak at a memorial. The natural fear of public speaking most people have has become entangled in the intensity, pain and despair of those occasions when she is called upon to do so. Failure in these events is met with far more than an already crippling social embarrassment, but can and has actually cost lives.
  • 3 Grief. She is not afraid of pain, even her own. Yet she sometimes feels as if the desperate weight upon her people will shatter her with grief and loss. She fears not being strong enough to comfort others, when she feels each loss so keenly herself.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Queen’s Gift. The area targeted grows wildly, abundantly, into super sized trees, impassable tangles of brambles, baffling hedge mazes, sometimes altering long known landmarks through roots that shatter or move boulders and rock. She has an unearthly beautiful voice, and uses it to thread her power into song.
  • 2 Queen’s Touch. Her touch and voice soothes, and brings peace to anyone she uses her Queen’s Touch upon, (through voice or physical touch) into a sense of harmony with who they are, and with their place amongst Children of the Ebon Wood.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Queen’s Gift. She does not produce a future enhanced harvest, although the growth she blesses remain abundant and incredibly beautiful, it grows immediately into a vast size; if it fruits at all, the fruit must be eaten within 13 days or it rots. Destruction of an area she has recently Gifted causes physical wounds upon her body that echo the nature and size of the disaster or attack.
  • 2 Queen’s Gease. It does not work, unless she can trace the agreement to the welfare of the Ebon Wood, and doing so twists and turns intended agreement, taking deadly paths neither person involved anticipated. They must always involve a death to an enemy of the Ebon Wood, and a restoration of part of it, no matter what she wants when it is invoked.

    History:

165 AP She was named Nova at birth, for the fierce temperament and deep gifts her Black Widow Hero sister saw in her. But that very year her father Polo died; the baby Nova was re-christened Requiem, for she was his final gift to them. Between her assorted siblings and her parents, she has experience of living intimately with each and every Caste. This has fundamentally shaped her view of life, and the nature of the Dea al Mon.

From an early age, her voice was captivating and she was encouraged to study song.

172 AP Despite being born a Queen, she was permitted to live at home with her boisterous family. She studied with her mother and siblings until she received her Birthright uncut Yellow . At that point, she was sent for Craft training daily with an older Queen. This become problematic, as her deep bond with the earth and the plants of the Ebon Wood meant that most of her Queen’s Caste Craft did not function entirely as expected.

175 AP It was during one of these training sessions that a Brood attack, wildly unexpected, shattered through the small village she was studying at. They swept down upon the Court, burning the place to cinders. Requiem was young then, only 10, and she grew a massive tree around herself as the flames licked at her ankles and feet. It died protecting her, and she mourns it still. When troubled, she often goes to that dark and devastated place to seek answers. She was young and deeply attached to the Queen and Court who had been teaching her. The Healers and Black Widows say that she will bear the burn scars on her feet and legs until she is able to let go of those she lost.

That same year, she watched her sister Innocent begin her service in the Red Cloaks. Lynx and Apple would soon follow, but not Requiem. Queens were forbidden. Yet Requiem longed for a way to prove herself, especially as her Queen’s Gift was so terribly odd; she could grow a giant mushroom or Fox-leaf, but not ensure a proper harvest in the proper time. She despaired of having anything at all of use to give.

180 AP The Fall of Kassel shook her family, and even though Innocent was done with her time of service, the Healer began to volunteer with the Red Cloaks and Ebon Guard. One of the few areas of Caste Craft that worked properly for the young Queen was Emotional Healing, so Requiem was sometimes permitted to attend on her sister. The young Queen gave what comfort she could to the injured, the dying and the despairing. Requiem loved and hated these trips, as they both fulfilled her and pushed her against some of her deepest fears. It was during these trips that her odd Queen’s Gift began to be seen as a unique strategic tool, rather than a flaw.

183 AP Her Virgin Night was gentle and did all that it was supposed to do, without a vast outpouring of either fear or love. Ritualized, controlled and careful it was a good introduction to what the needs of a Queen might well become.

185 AP Two full yeas later Requiem at last held her Offering, cut Rose . Requiem finished her Court training, and though young, was approached immediately and asked to take up an odd position. She would need a Village, in order to gain a Court, but this court would have a very unique job. She and her Village would assist the Ebony Guard with her odd Queen’s Gift. Requiem was offered the village of A’nor, which looked directly to the Province Court in Devinos. While she personally choose a skilled Triangle, a five man squad each of the Ebon Guard and the Red Cloaks was assigned to complete her First circle. This special group received careful training, and had the purpose of of escorting her into at risk areas. There, she and her team would combine normal siege defenses with her living defenses. They would conceal stores, protect villages, reinforce dams and bridges. Even putting in defenses at forward bases, on those rare occasions that it was deemed safe to do so. The goal was for her to never see combat, and she was strictly forbidden from participating should it occur. This was a last ditch effort, and so her unit was called the Omega Unit.

188 AP. The Dea al Mon were loosing to the Brood, and could not keep them fully at bay. Slowly, her group was tasked with more and more dangerous missions. Called to strange places and risky situations, her Omega Unit saw more and more situations in which Requiem was never able to be brought close enough to the target area to do her job. Once, during this horrible year, she even briefly witnessed her unit in combat. It was the hardest thing she’d ever done, to follow her orders and flee whilst her people fought and died behind her.

190 AP. Her sister Journey was asked to become High Priestess of all Dea al Mon, and accepted the post. Both her Healer Sisters, Innocent and Apple, went with her. Lynx was in the Guard, and the twins often away on their own business. Requiem learned to endure her post without the rotating support and comfort of her family, and grew closer to her Unit than to her blood kin.

191 AP Her sister Journey died fighting a demon thing, and releasing it upon a Dea al Mon Warlord Prince. The Seekers were sent out, and for the first time in a very long time there was hope that the Seekers would find the answers needed to stop the Waste and the Brood. Allure Avindolea becomes the Queen of Devinos province.

    192 AP Requiem begins play.

    Character in Play:

Dark, it was so very dark. There was no moon tonight, and the faint, despairing stars could not force back the night. Leaves rustled and blew in the harsh winter wind, small cackles of ice striking the ear as they broke off of the sleet-encrusted branches and plunged to their death. The scent of blood and death lingered on the night air.

They never told you, what a battle smelled like. The fear and pain, blood and the scent of organs spilling into the air, choking you. People talked about the sounds of battle, but those stories, too, were deceiving. It wasn’t loud clanks of metal or war horns filling the air. Pained grunts, desperate cries, the bizarre noises of the twisted, deformed creatures that had once been Dea al Mon. The one thing Requiem had no clear memory of was the sight of battle; she’d mostly had her eyes squeezed shut. But the sounds and scents, they remained to haunt her.

Requiem had learned the truth about battle at a very young age, only ten. She strove to forgive her frightened, cowardly self of five years ago. Sought to banish the fear that urged her to stay safe inside. The young Queen, not even to her Offering, pushed the rough camp blanket off of her scarred legs, and dressed slowly in her best approximation of a proper uniform. It was all guess work and clever tailoring, of course; she would never be permitted a true one of her own.

She was a Queen, and Queens did not fight. Healer’s fought. Her sister Innocent’s sleep was exhausted, and deep; The Healer did not so much as stir as Requiem kissed her sister on the cheek, and exited the tent.

    The smell hit her again.

More than anything, the scent of battle gave Requiem nightmares, had driven her out of her tent, to walk amongst the wounded. To lay her hands upon the dying, and kiss them gently good night. They knew her as no more than a combination of her Caste and Jewel, a phantom in the night, who sometimes appeared. Was driven, really.

    She could not feed them.

    Could not clothe them.

Could not Heal them, or guide them, or defend them.

But if the touch of her hands brought a moment’s respite from their grief, if her Emotional Healing eased their passage, then she offered it.

Even if the scents and sounds of their wounds, the feel of their grief, threatened to dash her young heart to pieces, even as the wind shattered the ice.
