Play By: Rudi Dollmayer
Distinguishing Features:
Repose is missing his left hand.  There is a wicked scar that curves up from his wrist towards his elbow, the last remaining marks of his battle against the Brood.  He also tends to have a fairly serious expression, even when he is enjoying himself.

Personality

Personality:
There is a quiet intensity to the male known as Repose.  He is thoughtful, careful, and meticulous when it comes to his plans and actions.  He does his best to think of all possible outcomes, and then focus on what is most likely to occur.  While he knows that perfection is unobtainable, he does not believe that this does not mean a person should not always strive to do better, and to journey ever onwards towards that impossible goal.

Working in this way allows him to distract himself from the reality of his newfound 'disability', though Repose likes to consider his missing hand as a temporary setback while he works to retrain his right hand to handle his fighting skills.  He refuses to believe that he will be forever a physical burden on a battlefield.

That stubborn will has served him all his life - and he intends to see it serve where it can for the rest of his days.  If he cannot currently fight then he can at least serve in a way that will help others do so. Without having an outlet for his need to serve others, he quickly becomes ornery and more likely to lash out.

Fortunately, he not only has his daughter, but has recently found his Queen.  Inwardly he rejoices over this; but outwardly he strives to maintain the bearing and dignity that has ever been a hallmark of his family line.  Allure is his Queen, and he wants her - no, he needs her - to succeed.  Of course, Allure has her own failings, some of which are quite public knowledge, and this gives him concern.

He frets and worries, visibly when in the privacy of his office, over how best to assist Allure in conquering her more impulsive instincts.  The knowledge that these concerns will likely cause tension between himself and his Queen often cause his irritability to spike, though he will do his best to keep from outwardly releasing that tension on the undeserving.

He does not always succeed - and his own skills often allow his outbursts to be more harmful on an emotional level than many might assume when observing him.

Repose is a male proud of his service, proud of his record - and furious that he is no longer a soldier of the Ebon Guard.  His lover was lost during the Brood attack on the Black Castle, his fighting hand was taken, and he intends to do all he can to rectify these mistakes.

Likes:
  • 1. Philosophy - Perhaps it is the hobby of someone entitled and upper-crust, but Repose lives up to his name and enjoys contemplating the deeper meanings of life and faith.  Not that he feels an urge to dive into Religion, per se, but he enjoys applying his studies of the Faith to the realities of life.
  • 2. The Dark - Repose prefers to relax in complete darkness, without the distraction of light or his eyes to distract him from the more subtle joys of the natural world.  In the Dark he can focus on his nose, his sense of taste and touch, and the delicate delights of his ears.
  • 3. "The Rules" - With rules, the chaos of life can be mostly contained.  Between Protocol and the general idea of 'how things are done', all tasks can be accomplished.  And that is truly the greatest blessing, in the mind of Repose.  No problem cannot be overcome, provided someone is able to find the correct set of guidelines.

    Dislikes:
  • 1.  His Missing Hand -  It isn't that Repose begrudges his survival.  He's quite grateful to have been Healed and to still have his life.  But he misses the feel of a blade in his hand.  He misses knowing that he could use his strength of arm to defend the people and land that he loves.  While he can write quite well with his right hand, he still has not remastered the sword in his right hand.
  • 2. Being Late - Repose despises being late.  Whether that's after sleeping in, or something just taking longer than it should, he gets more and more ornery the closer he gets to missing a deadline he has set for himself.  If he has enough warning that a deadline will break, he will alter schedules as necessary - but unforeseen lateness drives his temper.
  • 3. Repeating Himself - There is a difference between having to reword a directive to ensure it is understood... and being ignored.  The first is acceptable.  The second is intolerable.  Few things can make Repose begin to lose his temper as quickly as being forced to repeat himself, and with a teenage daughter he finds that his temper is often quick to come to the fore these days.

    Fears:
  • 1.  Losing Another Limb - Losing his ability to fight with a blade was devastating.  But to lose anything else would make him an invalid, and he isn't sure he could live with himself if that were to happen.  There is a difference between challenge and uselessness in his mind - and the moment he thinks himself more of a burden than a help, he will remove himself, or so he assures himself...
  • 2.  Failure - Small failures are one thing, and they are unavoidable.  What keeps Repose up, what worries him until his hair is a mess and his temper frays, is the idea that he will fail those who truly matter to him.  His daughter, his sister, his Queen.  Now that he is missing a hand, self-doubt plagues him at the worst moments.  How can he truly serve and protect the Females in his life if he is unable to effectively fight?
  • 3.  Black Castle - When the Castle roused itself against the invading Brood, it killed enemy and friend alike.  It fueled its defense with the blood and lives of those fighting on its behalf.  Logically, he understands this.  Everything has a Price.  But that doesn't stop the nightmares that play out in his head over the fate of his daughter if she had lost her mother and father all in the same day.  It doesn't stop the nightmares over whether the Castle used only the lives of those soldiers... or whether it ate their souls too.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Tracking Craft - Repose has an eye for small signs, a nose for subtle scents, and having an instinct for which way his prey would move.
  • 2. Exploiting Weakness - With a few minutes of conversation, and a bit of careful Craft, Repose has an uncanny (and some would say disturbing) knack for knowing where to apply pressure.  Do you have a daughter who is ill?  He can pick up that someone you care about has bad health.  Do you have a wife who is pregnant and it isn't going well?  He will know that a babe might not be coming along well.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Travel Craft - Winds?  Nope.  Just... nope.  It isn't that he can't get into them.  It isn't that he can't go - it's that he has no idea where he will end up inside of Dea al Mon.  That could be very bad, considering the current situations.
  • 2.  Physical Enhancement - Part of what has made his injury so devastating is that Repose simply cannot compensate with Craft to force his reflexes and strength to be better than they naturally are.  Everything he had learned, every fighting skill he'd mastered, is something he must relearn with his right arm.  That simply isn't easy, especially without Craft to help him along.

    History:
The Shendlan line has been practically synonymous with 'service to the Territory' for over six hundred years.  Born of aristocratic blood and trained into service from the moment they can walk, Shendlan children always seek to Serve.  Most join the Ebon Guard or Red Cloaks, and many choose to make that service their lifelong career; others choose to serve in Courts, or find some other meaningful way to serve their homeland.

Repose Shendlan had chosen the Ebon Guard as his point of service.  With no Queen to call him from duty, he had focused his life and goals with the motivation of rising as high and as honorably as he could.  For most of his life, he managed to do exactly what he wanted.  He focused on his skills, on his Protocol, and on ensuring that he could meet whatever mission might be given to him.

After the Brood took Kassel, he knew that he would have to become even better.  Repose became a sight to be feared with his odd left-handed maneuvers and his agility.  He honored his family and his commanders - and when the time came to hold ground against the enemy he would not falter.

His baby brother had followed him into service, but had been assigned to the command of the Starlight Company.  Steel, his little brother, was exuberant.  The Alerron family led the company, and Steel had a bit of hero worship for their heir, Shade Alerron.

Then the Starlight Company was destroyed by Brood.  The loss of Steel Shendlan destroyed Repose's mother.  His father retired so as to take care of his wife, and that left the attendance of the funeral to Repose and his sister, Veridian.  They did their best to honor the family by appearing as collected as they could during the state funeral - but the loss of Steel hardened both of them in those moments.

Repose was stationed in Nieste just a few weeks before the attack came.  The Brood swarmed out of the forests and began to strike at the heart of the Dea al Mon.  The battle was going poorly - Repose could scarcely believe how many of the monsters there were.  The battle was quite possibly the most intense he'd ever endured; and it showed.  When he was swarmed by three of the beasts, one of them got hold of his left hand.

And they were able to breach his Shields.

His left hand disappeared down the gullet of the beast, and he was forced to pull a dagger in his right hand and end the monster.  He had readied himself for death - had accepted that with his main sword hand missing he likely would not survive - when the Black Castle itself came to life and defended itself against the onslaught.

That was awe inspiring - and a nightmare.  The Black Castle fueled itself upon the lives of its people.  Numerous soldiers fell, impaled upon the Black Castle's greedy thorns so that it could destroy the army that had come for its treasures.  He nearly died.  One of his fellow soldiers had reached for him, and then had jerked as one of those thorns struck the soldier in the chest.  A blow from behind caught Repose across his skull... and he fell into darkness assuming that he too was going to die.

Days later, he woke in the Healing Tents.  His hand was gone, his body ached... and his lover had disappeared in the attacks.  People reported having seen her dragged off by the Brood, and he found himself earnestly praying that she had died. Anything else would be too awful to contemplate.

Besides - his Healer daughter was now his to raise.  Alone.  And one-handed.  It took a few weeks after his release from the Healers to petition Sworn's family and get permission to adopt his daughter officially, a bit longer to get the paperwork completed and bring Ambrosia fully into the Shendlan family, but he did it stubbornly.

He also was medically discharged from the Ebon Guard, given full honors and recognition for his Service, and found himself for the first time in his life fairly... goal-less.  Other than raising his daughter, what was his purpose?

    Character in Play:
His left hand hurt.  That was impossible, of course, as the limb was missing.  Still, he could swear that he felt stiffness in his fingers and an ache in his knuckles.  His arm flexed as if that would somehow relieve the pressure - and clearly it did not.

Frustrated, he blinked down at the paper on the desk before him and startled a little as he felt a warm hand settle on his shoulder.  "Ambrosia... darling it's ok."

    "You hurt.  Let me help."

Shame.  It filled him that he hadn't thought to shield away his pain while his daughter was studying.  Ambrosia was doing the best she could, of course, to continue her studies and distract herself from the loss of her mother.  She'd requested to stay in his study with him - and foolishly, he had agreed.  True, he found comfort in her presence and he enjoyed knowing she was here and safe - but remembering that her senses could pick up on his pain was strangely difficult.

He blamed how distracted he was by everything going on in life.

Her Rose flared to life on its pendant, and he let out an appreciative sigh as his Daughter worked at loosening the tension in his forearm.  "Remember, father, the Healers said you were to stretch as often as possible to keep it from tightening up so painfully."

"Yes, daughter."  He couldn't help the small smile.  She was so serious about her Healing.  And she needed to be.  That thought killed his smile, just a bit.  The Brood had struck a serious blow against his people.  They had marched to the castle gates, essentially, before the Castle itself fought them back.

His Daughter would be needed in just a few short years.  And then... then she too might be lost to the madness.  For the first time he felt a flicker of fear about his daughter's fate.  He didn't want her to suffer the same losses that others had.  He didn't want her at risk.  Shendlans Serve.

Well, he would just have to find a way to make sure she served in a Court somewhere.  First thing's first... finding Queens to introduce her to.  With any luck, she'd get snatched up, and she wouldn't be required to serve in the Red Cloaks.
