Age and Birth Year: 49 (born 145 AP)
Race: medium lived
Caste: witch
Birth Territory: Dea al Mon
Home Territory: Dea al Mon

Appearance
Play By: Eivor Palsdottir
Distinguishing Features: Her eyes are little large for normal Dea al Mon and her pupils are now vertically slit. Her fingernails are tipped in claws from her new form. She has little bells and other shiny objects woven into her hair.

Personality

Personality:

Unusually trusting of authority, Reaper never did quite develop that independent thinking streak that most adults do. She has always preferred to let others decide things for her, provided that they make a bit of sense. Her “go with the flow” mentality was easily brushed off in her youth. As she grows older though, it becomes apparent that she will mature physically but not really mentally. That’s not a deformity -- that’s a decision on her part. She doesn’t want to “adult” or be responsible. She sees how it weighs on others and wants to remain free of that weight. This is one of two themes that transferred from her pre-Brood life and the primary reason why Reaper now lives life at such a frenetic, playful pace.

The other theme to her life is children and that ties into her philosophy of spontaneity and lack of forethought. Reaper loved children before she became Brood and now finds herself gravitating towards them even more at times because they understand her.

Even if they have reason to fear her.

As Reaper, even though she has been so for years, she still feels like she is finding purpose to that unexpected name. “You will reap what we will sow,” is what Genesis told her. While Reaper isn’t sure what that means, it sounds important and it is the only mantle of responsibility that she will bear. Genesis gave her new life and she doesn’t want to let the Brood mother down.

But also as Reaper, she’s a little twisted, a little insane. Something broke internally somewhere and Reaper has a hard time distinguishing malice from innocent fun at times. There’s a line that she’ll cross somehow, unknowingly, and then she’ll be flabbergasted and upset when the other party is offended or angry. Her moral compass no longer points true north -- it spins and careens closely to her whims. She’s okay with that, because it means fun for her, but sometimes it puts her in compromising situations. Her biggest source of anger nowadays comes from when someone doesn’t like her gifts or someone stops her from having her fun. She’ll devolve into an indignant temper tantrum at best or eviscerating bloodlust at worst.

Despite her now twisted nature, Reaper is a good, loyal ally to have. She tends to bring gifts back to her friends, worries when they’re hurt or sick, and does her best to do good, if for no one else than for them. She hates seeing people she cares about down. They should be happy like she is happy! This care for others endears her to them, despite her mercurial nature. She understands that she can sometimes be difficult to handle but she thinks that her heart is in the right place.

Likes:
  • 1 - Affection and play. True to her spirit, Reaper loves cuddling, hugs, leaning against others, playing games with them. It’s all such fun to her. She liked this before her transformation but it was frowned upon then and way more tolerated now. Mostly.
  • 2 - Being Brood. She once feared the Brood, heard all sorts of awful stories about them. But after being fused with her fox spirit, Reaper has never once looked back. In fact, she hates her previous life. Being Brood has opened doors for her that were closed before and she loves it.
  • 3 - Meeting others. Particularly, others with the Waste, because she has something amazing to offer them. But Reaper just loves meeting anything with moderate sentience. She’ll talk to squirrels if they could talk back. Oh, they can’t? Darn.
Dislikes:
  • 1- Being called by her original Dea al Mon name. She’s Reaper now. Not Laurel. Laurel was boring, plain. Reaper is fun, exciting, different. Don’t call her Laurel! She’s not Laurel anymore, she’s Reaper!
  • 2 - Routine. Routine is boring and has lost its novelty. Reaper likes to do things with fun and flair. Try hopping on one foot into the Den one day. Or speaking backwards. That’s fun! But the same ol’ trails, the same ol’ things -- Reaper despises that.
  • 3 - Music. Music reminds her of her old life, usually because it is old Dea al Mon songs. Whenever music is played, Reaper will vocally, or sometimes violently, object, going so far as to smash the instrument or hurt someone.
Fears:
  • 1 - Being alone. Foxes aren’t pack animals but Reaper is. The only time she is alone is if she’s scouting for a new recruit, but then again, is she really alone if she’s watching someone? No. When Reaper is at the den, she seeks out her companions at all times. She fears to be alone because it reminds her of being Laurel and the awful life that once was.
  • 2 - Growing old. Growing old means slowing down, means not having any more fun. Growing old means things don’t work properly. Break. Reaper doesn’t want to break! Even though she’s not near old, she still does everything she can to live in the moment and not think of the future.
  • 3 - Reverting back to Laurel. She’s been told that it isn’t possible. That she is forever fused with the playful fox spirit within her. But there’s a kernel of dark, deep fear resting within her that what was done can be undone and she fiercely avoids any talk or actions that remotely circle that.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Whimsy Craft. Reaper excels at this. She is able to make life-size shadows puppets, dust devils with the wind, hanging pieces of art with leaves, an intricate stream of fake fireflies, etc. This is her finest work and her most known -- it’s what she uses to lure children out of their homes and into the forest.
  • 2 - Vanishing and Conjuring. Reaper’s strength with this is that she can vanish objects within her line of sight, though not at great distances. She loves doing this as a prank upon others and then conjuring the object a few feet away.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Defensive Shielding. Initially, Reaper’s weakness with this Craft had its origin in her fear of pain. She thought it better to play innocent, rather than try to protect herself from harm. As she evolved, she can now only conjure short Shields at her Tiger Eye level because she believes that no one would really mean her harm, right?
  • 2 - Timed Craft. As much as Reaper would LOVE to be able to time some of her Crafty tricks, she gets too impatient, waiting for them to happen, and thus the anticipation of the trick ruins her focus.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Tamarind Menegroth, Tiger Eye to Rose witch (age 88, born 6 AP)
Father: Fallow Menegroth, White to Tiger Eye Prince (age 89, born 5 AP)
Siblings: brother Martial, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Prince (deceased at age 30, born 149 AP)
Allies: Orchid Tanithil, Summer Sky to Green hearth witch (age 46, born 148 AP)
Ash Caraslin, Purple Dusk to Sapphire Warlord (age 32, born 162 AP)
Shadow, Summer Sky to Opal Warlord (age 51, born 143 AP)

History:

Laurel had never been the easiest of children.

What began as a rambunctious side became wilder with age and the more society tried to tame it. As a child, Laurel found it hard to focus on anything more than half an hour, and seemed to constantly be in motion. Or trouble. Her father, Fallow, was a strict, exacting sort of man and Laurel, who was the elder of the two Menegroth children, had expectations that she was always failing to live up to, in his dark eyes. Laurel still remembers that leveling, critical gaze from her past life -- mostly because she still sees it today.

Getting ahead of ourselves, aren’t we?

Anyway, Laurel’s Birthright was a Tiger Eye, a lovely little Jewel that she felt was a perfect embodiment of her wildness. She struggled through schooling into her teenage years. Only a few near misses with her Virgin Night and spellwork seemed to temper Laurel’s seemingly reckless decision-making. Still, despite the headache she often caused her family (Did we mention that she got kicked out of her mandatory service in the Red Cloaks? That’s a rather fun story), she adored them. She’d do anything for them. Kind of.

True to her irresponsible nature, Laurel didn’t feel the need to make her Offering until the window of opportunity had nearly passed her up. Her Summer Sky was a welcomed surprise, especially since she thought its color reminded her of the clear sky she so rarely saw trapped under the trees.

Laurel didn’t realize that her father had succumbed to the Waste, a debilitating spiritual illness creeping through the Dea al Mon until he abandoned them. Or maybe, she just chose to ignore the signs. Whatever the case, just before she turned thirty, he left. Laurel was told to give him up for dead.

Naturally, she didn’t.

It took her and her brother five years to track him down. Laurel followed her father into the maelstrom that was the Brood because she thought that she could save him. But once caught in its clutches, she realized that no one, especially not her, could save him. Or the Dea al Mon.

Still, becoming Brood wasn’t that bad.

It only involved eating her brother.

Her father sacrificed Martial when he refused to take the gift Genesis offered. When the bloodied blade was leveled at Laurel, she accepted her fate and let Genesis work her Craft. Laurel died that day as well, in a way, and Reaper, infused with the spirit of a crazed fox, was born.

As two of the first Brood, the Menegroth family held a special place in the heart of the Brood, with Reaper’s father serving as an advisor to the great Brood Mother. Once recovered from her rebirth, Reaper adjusted to her life with gusto. A world that seemed only half-colored before now sprang to life with possibilities and play. Where her father seemed so reserved, so duty-bound, Reaper now dove into exploration. Every inch of the forest became her playground. Eventually, she discovered that her new spirit enabled her to get close to civilization without detection, and what fun there was to twist shadows and light into interesting entertainment for children! Thus, she became the ears of the Brood Mother, reporting back all she had heard. She knew that her explorations were important because the packs were dispatched to areas she had visited and more friends came to join them.

Friends like Orchid. And Ash. And Shadow.

Reaper delighted in these developments and set about exploring this brave new world with her growing circle of Brood friends. Could they make all of Dea al Mon like the Brood? Let’s find out!

Character in Play:

Her ears picked up the strains of voices, clear and civilized, from up ahead. Wrapped in shadow and silence, she crept forward, coming up to a window illuminated by soft witchlight, as a mother read a story to her young children. A bedtime story! Oh, those were great! Full of heroes, and monsters, and magic! Villains and volcanoes! Wait, what about villains IN volcanoes? Oh, there was an idea!

But that was not the story being told tonight. As she listened, taking care not to let the witchlight reflect in her large eyes, lest she be seen, she heard an unhappy tale. A tale of warning, of lies. Lies! Why did they always have to lie?! The dark forest beyond didn’t have monsters in it! No, it had friends of a different sort! Weren’t deer and foxes just friends that walked on two legs? Of course they were! Well, she was half fox and half Dea al Mon, so that made her full friend, right?

But as the story drew to a close, she found herself wrinkling her nose in distaste and baring her teeth in anger. Fear the reaper! Why did they say that?! It wasn’t fair! It wasn’t nice! They had nothing to fear from her! She just wanted to play!

They never understood that.

The light blew out and darkness slipped in. She waited a moment and then conjured up a small ball of witchlight, cupping it within her claws, breathing it to life and shape. The shape of a fox, of course! Giggling softly to herself, she sent her little whimsical Craft scampering to the windowsill, where it preened and pranced for a moment until she heard the children in the room gasp in delight. She directed the little glowing fox to prance about a bit more before having it scamper off into the dark woods beyond, trotting off in the direction of her own Brood family.

The children giggled and went back to sleep. But she knew that they now had an idea, a seed, and would no longer fear the dark forest beyond. In time, they would come wandering out and be friends with so many others of the forest, just like she had.

See? Don’t  fear the Reaper.
