Distinguishing Features:
Like is typical of her mother’s kin, Kalis is long, lean, and dark like an evening shadow.

Personality

Personality:
Kalis has always been a wild spirit bound by the practical influences of her father.  Try as they might, Kalis had always walked her own path somewhere between where her mother wanted her to be and where her father hoped and assumed she would be.  But that was just in Kalis's nature.  Whether out of spite, tenacity, or just plain amusement, Kalis is capable of flitting where ever she is needed without complaint or concern for her own well being.

From the moment that most of Kalis's family was buried in the ground and her father seemingly stopped being an adult on his own accord, Kalis declared herself leader of their family.  As such, Kalis's bossy personality has blossomed out of necessity.  Not just for herself but for her father and her uncle who were both now considered under her charge.

The Healer has a razor sharp sense of humor.  Not even Kalis is sure if she developed it out of desire to hide her own pain, the pressures of the responsibility placed on her shoulders, or if she just inherited the aloof nature of her mother's kin.  Despite her sense of humor, Kalis takes what she does and the people she cares for very seriously.  Any that come to Kalis looking for aid or care are treated with equal respect and dignity.

Of all the things that drives the Healer insane, it is the fact that her father has devolved into a grown man child.  To complicate matters, her uncle is no better.  If Kalis didn't love what was left of her kin, she would have murdered them all long ago.

Likes:
  • 1- Being an apothecary- As a young girl, Kalis spent a great deal of time with her grandmother studying the art of mixing herbs to make ointments and medicines.  While craft is handy when it comes to healing the body and soul, there is something incredibly therapeutic about the scents and sensations of a good herbal mixture.  Not only is it soothing to the patient, Kalis gets a great deal of comfort and therapeutic therapy from spending the time locked in her workroom, surrounded by the smells she grew up around.
  • 2- Weaponry- As a Healer, Kalis rarely has any use for weapons.  But as an Ecthelion, Kalis grew up occasionally being exposed to the more feral of her mother’s clan.  One of Kalis’s most treasured possessions is a wickedly sharp and beautiful blade gifted to her by her uncle.  Under her father’s nose, her Uncle and her mother’s cousin would allow the girl to play with their blades and even showed the Healer how to use them.  And whether the Healer knew it at the time, those times spent with the males of her mother’s family were to be short lived, cautiously guarded memories of happier times.
  • 3- A good laugh- If anyone knows the power of a laugh, it’s Kalis Ecthelion.  If the Healer didn’t know how to put a humorous spin on things, she’d have lost her mind in the twisted kingdom long ago.  And the healer holds tightly to memories of good natured times that have long since become phantom like memories.
Dislikes:
  • 1- Being a spectacle- Kalis is aware that her family is known for controversy and tragedy.  It doesn’t mean that the Healer enjoys the sidelong glances and whispers.  Over the years, Kalis has developed as sharp tongue and even sharper wit when it comes to dealing with individuals that chose to give her the side eye.
  • 2- Crying- In Kalis’s experience, crying has never done her any good.  Even from the first time tragedy touched Kalis’s family, the girl felt as if by crying, she was helping no one but herself in that moment.
  • 3- Allure- Kalis was barely old enough to understand what happened with her uncle and his Queen.  And not having that kind of bond with anyone leaves Kalis without a solid understanding of what exactly their relationship entails.  All Kalis knows is that her beloved Uncles and friends went away with Allure much to the dismay of her mother… and only Ranseur returned.  If you could call the man that came back Ranseur.
Fears:
  • 1- Being Taken by the Waste- Kalis has watched as most of her family has been taken by the Waste and she was powerless to stop it from happening.  If she couldn’t save them, what’s preventing the Waste from taking her also?
  • 2- Losing her Father- The Healer is no fool.  While she puts on a strong front, Kalis is very aware of the delicate thread that is holding her father to this world.  And Kalis doesn’t know how to fix it.  Or admit to her father that once he’s gone, Kalis is on her own.
  • 3- The Ecthelion Curse- The Dea al Mon are suspicious people.  They also have a flair for the dramatic.  Given the fates that have befallen many of her kin in the Ecthelion bloodline, Kalis is worried that maybe all the talk of curses may be true.  The fear that she, as an Ecthelion, may suffer a similar fate is crushing.

History:

Kalis’s earliest memories were always happy.  Even as a child, Kalis was aware of how much her mother and father loved each other.  There had always been something romantic about how her parents loved one another.  While her mother was fierce and powerful in everything she did, her father was resolute and proud.  Kalis knew from childhood that practically speaking, her parents shouldn’t have worked as well together as they did.  The Ecthelion clan was very nearly feral and stuck very close to the old ways.  On occasion, her mother would let her visit her family on the edge of Nieste.  There was always something incredibly familiar about the ways in which the clan harmonized with each other, bound in a love strong enough to bring the world down around them all.  Her father’s family was much more progressive, leaning towards the new way of doing things, focusing less on familial bonds and more on advancing the Dea al Mon as a whole.  Somewhere between those two viewpoints, Kalis emerged, having a love and understanding of both worlds.

As a little girl, Kalis grew up surrounded by love and kinship.  Even being very young, Kalis was included in all of the inner working of her small clan.  Having caught on early that the girl was a Healer, her family instructed her on the old methods of brewing potions and tonics, growing herbs for ointments and poultices, and even some prayers and songs that did as much for the soul and chalice as medicine did for the body.  Even before Kalis had her offering, those that watched the Healer close knew she was destined for greatness.  The year Kalis had her offering and came back with the Purple Dusk, her uncle Ranseur took her into the woods behind her grandmother’s home while her parents were in the market and along with Falconer, presented her with her first blade.  The bone handle was polished into a gleam only rivaled by dangerous gleam of the blade.  It was a knife fit for a warrior, not a little girl.  But Ranseur and Falconer Ecthelion were hardly men who played by standard rules of logic and reason.  It was there, without her father’s knowledge that Kalis got her first knife lesson.  And, subsequently, her first lesson in healing a knife wound.  Many years later, Kalis still recalls the gentle way her uncle spoke to her, even though by all reasoning he had the right to be angry with his niece for cutting him, instructing her in the art of stitching a wound closed on the field to prevent bleeding out.

Many children dislike having siblings.  Kalis loved being a sister.  Having two younger brothers around to herd like cattle in her escapades was a feather in cap.  Being darker and older, Kalis was always their go to when afraid or in need of support.  A joy that Kalis never grew tired of.  Having watched her mother interact with her Uncle, Kalis had always longed to feel that love and kinship and with her brothers, Kalis actually had it for a time.  As Kalis grew, so did her responsibilities.  A couple years after her offering, things in the Ecthelion clan changed.  Her Uncle Ranseur and her mother’s cousin found themselves enraptured with a Queen…a Queen Kalis could tell her parents didn’t think much of.  She was too young to understand the conversations and the sidelong glances but she was just old enough to understand her parents worry and that the men she loved so dearly were no longer home.

Kalis remembers clearly the day Ranseur finally came home alone.  The whispers had greeted her before she even got home that afternoon.  The sight the excited child found when she finally made it home after her short little legs carried her as fast as possible was not what she had been anticipating.  The man who was walking around in her uncle’s skin was not her uncle.  Even as a young child Kalis could understand that they day they buried Falconer, they buried the man she knew as uncle and friend.  Having lost so much at such a young age, Kalis felt helpless.  She could not console her Uncle… or her mother.  All she could do was stand beside her father and just be helpless.  The boys were too young to understand but the loss she was feeling was an actual void being left in her family.

Despite the overwhelming sadness that seemed to hover over her family like an oppressive cloud, Kalis seemed to bloom in adversity.  Her uncle had always referred to her as a dark blooming flower… she supposed that nickname had been more fortuitous than comfortable.  She excelled in healing of all varieties but excelled in the art of field dressings and battle injuries. And while the Healer was skilled in actual craft, Kalis was also proficient in the alchemy behind salves and ointments to both soothe pain and prevent infection. Given who her parents were, it only made sense that Kalis would be steered in the direction of the Red Cloaks.

The Healer didn't have to think twice.  Upon receiving her Offering of the Uncut Green, Kalis signed up with the Red Cloaks.  Her skills and other training she had received from her mother's kin lent for Kalis excelling within the Red Cloaks.  Just as Kalis was making herself at home within the ranks, the Waste came to the Dea al Mon.  While Kalis slaved tirelessly to try and stop the bleeding of her people, she had been wrong in thinking that the Darkness would somehow spare her family given how much they had already lost.

Kalis had been surprised to see her Uncle waiting for her with her troop leader.  In his uniform, Ranseur Ecthelion had looked like a different man entirely.  Cloaked in the gray and black uniform and the air of complete and total control, Kalis felt as if she was looking at a complete and total stranger.  They had sent her uncle to give her the worst news imaginable.  Her mother had fallen to the Waste.  From the time Kalis returned home to her distraught father, her mother's condition had worsened to the point that the young healer could do nothing but sooth her mother's pain.  Long hours Kalis sat, running her fingers through her mother's hair, singing her the songs of her mother's clans.

Losing her mother was heartbreaking.  Watching her brothers fall to the same sickness was devastating, but watching her father slowly slip into despair.  She could do nothing for her siblings or mother, but she sure as hell could do something about her father.  Whether her father wants her to or not, Kalis has taken on the reigns of being the head of the family.  His slow decline into depression left him in a position that Kalis couldn't trust him to make any decisions at all.  Now that her uncle has finally returned to Eddersea, Kalis is hoping that his surly influence will help Kalis finally pull her father from his depression once and for all.

Character in Play:
Of all the stupid, arrogant, selfishly stupid things.  She'd been on duty when her uncle's harsh bark of a command had rang in her head like a phantom whip crack.  If he was making commands in that voice, she knew something was incredibly wrong.  And if it was regarding her father, than Kalis knew exactly what was happening.  Kalis ran.  She ran like she had on the day her uncle had come home from the courts.  Only this time, her legs were much longer and excited anticipation had been replaced with a nervous sick that threatened to force her stomach into a deadly knot.

For months her father had been on the decline.  He'd stopped eating, stopped bathing, stopped doing all the things that fathers were supposed to do.  The pendulum of father and child had swung so far in the other direction, Kalis was now the acting parent in their relationship.  It was infuriating, almost maddening.  While her father had always been the resilient one, Kalis had spent months watching that resiliency fade into a desperate lingering that only those who suffered the Waste experienced... well, them and those who lost everyone to it.  Darkness be damned, Voulge Ecthelion was not going to abandon her.  A lifetime alone with just Ranseur was a frightening thought not even Kalis was brave enough to contemplate.

The door of their town home was open as Kalis approached.  Inside the entry way, Ranseur stood like a sentinel.  He looked like a figure out of a storybook.  Large, oppressive, commanding.  Had he not stood between her and her father, Kalis may have slowed.  Instead, the Healer put her hand forcefully on her uncle's chest, forcing him to step back, away from the entry way to the living room where her father sat.  Whether it was the look in her eyes, the cold of her rather, or the fact that the Healer had already called in the green jewel, Kalis wasn't sure but whatever prompted her Uncle to give her nothing more than a stern look, Kalis was thankful for it.

Voulge Ecthelion clearly had been sitting in that room for weeks.  There was no other sensible reason for the state of that room. Liquor bottles were scattered around the room, making it nearly impossible for the Healer to stalk across the room.  But given her rage, nearly impossible wasn't impossible enough.  Firing up her green jewel, Kalis knelt at her father's feet.  Who knew how long he'd been unconscious and frankly, the amount of alcohol and whatever else he'd consumed was enough that he should be dead.  But not on Kalis's watch.

Placing her hands on his abdomen and along the side of her damp face, Kalis forced the healing craft into his flesh, draining out the toxins that were threatening to drag her father into a place in the abyss that would surely drown him.  "Listen to me, you son of a bitch.  If you think I won't come into the Abyss to get you, you're very, very wrong."
