Appearance

Play By: Andy Biersack
Distinguishing Features: Jackal has various tattoos over his body, many of which have meanings he probably won't tell you about.

Personality

Personality: Jackal is proud, confident, arrogant, and aggressive in all the ways that one might imagine a Warlord Prince of the Blood (nay, of the Dea al Mon) to be. This, understandably, can make him a bit of a bastard at times. He will act how he sees fit, consequences be damned, and anyone who thinks to try and change his mind on a matter is in for a rough ride.

He is stubborn, bull-headed even - but if there is even one thing going for him, is that even if he's a bastard, at least he's an honest one. Jack learned a long time ago that he was rotten at lying, and though there've certainly been times where he's attempted to compensate with some deception craft (which never succeeded mind you) he does tend to hold to the belief that if he was meant to lie, the Mother would have made him a better liar. So he doesn't try. He just speaks the truth... whether you want to hear it or not. Not that he goes around heaping on unsolicited advice, but if you ask him a question you aren't going to get a softened, sweetened answer even if he's sure you aren't going to like it. To call him blunt would be an understatement, and only part of that is in his general nature. The rest comes from the fact that being blunt with someone - especially someone who is used to being pandered to - tends to get the best rise out of them, and he does especially enjoy getting reactions out of people.

Jack is many things. He is stubborn, feral, a bit of an ass - but one thing he is not is flighty. When Jack decides he is going to do something, he does it. When he sets out to track or hunt something, he catches it. When he makes a promise to a family to avenge the loss of their loved one, he fulfills that promise. He takes promises very seriously, and will react harshly toward anyone he finds has broken one.

Though a fairly social creature by nature (yes, this asshole likes to be around people so you're even more likely to suffer him), Jackal does tend to resist forming attachments. He likes being around people. He likes laughing with them, engaging, drinking with them. He likes fucking and fighting and teasing them. He doesn't like loving them. Even the brush of friendship can make him uncomfortable once he realizes what it is, and he has the tendency to instantly shove distance between himself and the would-be friend. He has managed to begrudgingly accept one or two attachments over the years (because there are some things we really just can't control), and his possessive and protective natures flare with intensity when he is even in the general vicinity of where these fair few reside.

Some may consider it contradictory to his typical demeanor, but another deep and defining factor of Jackal is his sense of honor. He has a very, clear-cut code when it comes to what is right, and what is wrong. He sees things in black and white a lot of the time, at least when it comes to these things, and true to his bullish nature he does not sway to cajoling or "reasoning". He will always give his food to someone hungrier than himself if they've no means to get any themselves. He will never abandon someone alone in the wood - no matter how inconvenient their appearance may be to his current mood or mission. He will not allow injustice to be tolerated in front of him, no matter how much power the perpetrator wields.

Likes:
  • 1 - Hunting. There's something very satisfying and primal about hunting. Not trapping, hunting. Small game, the execution of snares, etc. are all good and fine for catching a meal - but what he really likes is stalking his prey. His most favorite of which are the intelligent prey that think they are the predators. Like those fucking abominations that call themselves Brood.
  • 2 - Dancing. Jack has surprisingly good rhythm. He enjoys folk dances and more general freestyle dancing, even the more traditional partner or court dances - many of which he's picked up despite having never been at court simply because he's interested and has known enough people who are willing to show him the steps. One of the few times he seems truly light and free and happy is when he's dancing or enjoying music.
  • 3 - Provoking/Riling someone up. He really is so very fond of getting under someone's skin. He likes making them splutter or growl or get thrown off their game. On the other side, he also likes making people blush and fidget in genuine frustration or even sexual tension. Which it ends up being doesn't wholly matter to him, and he isn't exactly aiming for whatever the follow through would be, be it a fight or sex. It's the antagonization he's really after. Basically, he loves being a pest.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - The Brood. Fucking abominations. They're pure evil - and worse than that, they all seem to have chosen to be that way. He has yet to come across a Brood that's lamented their state (at least, not to him right before he's killed them). Their apparent mission to corrupt the rest of their people, the rest of the whole damn forest, with their filth is a personal offense to him and grates against his very soul, where his love for his people resides. He sees the Brood not only as abominations and some twisted rot taking over Dea Al Mon, but as a very betrayal to what they once were, to what he and every other citizen still are. That is disgusting and unforgivable.
  • 2 - Diplomacy. Too much talk, and too little doing. Lives are lost while people debate on this and that and here and there. While fucking asswipes sit in there flowery palaces, debating trivialities so they don't accidentally piss off some Queen or whatever, people are dying and the Brood are spreading. Those fuckers aren't going to just wait for the higher ups to make a decision. They aren't going to just politely sit by while a defense is mounted. And Jack doesn't have the patience to sit by and wait either.
  • 3 - People with weak character. Jackal has little patience for people who break their promises or who suffer from something of a generally weak character. It is of his opinion while some things are nature, the important things about a person are active choices. One chooses to be unfaithful and cowardly. One chooses to be a self-entitled, flaky prat. This holds true about people who blame the world around them for their problems. These are the people most likely to get punched in the face with sincerity.
Fears:
  • 1 - Being called to serve. Jack has his own way of doing things, his own missions to protect and defend. He does not want to be a part of a Court, he doesn't want to be repurposed at the whim of a Queen. Moreover, he doesn't want to struggle with some internal complex of whether or not to obey or follow his own path. He's a Warlord Prince, and he's had moments where he's recognized that pull toward service - which is exactly why he's afraid of what might happen if he's called to serve and has to choose between following direction or forging his own path.
  • 2 - Becoming one of them. He would rather die. He would rather die screaming in agony than to lose himself to whatever twisted fuckery turns a member of the Dea al Mon into the Brood. He tells himself that if he were ever taken by them, if they ever tried to turn him, he'd kill himself and take as many of them out with him as he could - but there's this kernel of fear he desperately works to ignore that worries he won't be able to. That he will become a part of the scourge.
  • 3 - Falling in love. Weakness, and one he cannot afford. Falling in love, to have that weight on his heart - to feel fear every day that the person who holds his heart may one day be hurt, or taken, or changed.. is terrifying. Jackal is a passionate man, he never does anything halfway. If he loves something, someone, it's going to be all in. And the uncertainty that comes with love has the power to destroy him.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Combat Shielding. Jack is definitely the kind of fighter to take something that, in general concept, is designed for defense and embrace the method of using it for the offensive. He can call up shields quickly within a certain range of himself, both stagnant to be a barrier or a solid force as well as flexible to shield himself as he moves - but his preferred way to use them as a way to block, trap, and hit his enemies with what he calls a quick and dirty "flash shield" - because it's there one moment and gone the next. This can be somewhat disorienting for his enemy, who suddenly keeps running into things, which is part of the point.
  • 2 - Vanishing/Summoning Objects. Jack is quite accomplished at summoning something at the same time and into the same spot as he is vanishing it. It allows him to switch smoothly between weapons while in combat as well being generally useful in a variety of situations.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Fine Telekinetic Craft. Jack does not have the patience for such precision craft, and he doesn't see the point in trying to improve the skill either. Why bother when he could just use his own damn hands.
  • 2 - Deception Craft. You've got to at least be decent at lying to be able to work deception craft and Jack has no such skill. Oh he's tried, because it can be damn convenient, but at the very most he just ends up confusing or pissing off the person he's talking to.

History:

Jackal's father died when he was still in his mother's womb, but he would grow up hearing about how much his mother loved him. They'd been young, in love, half oblivious to the world slowly unraveling around them - optimistic of what their lives were going to be and excited to move forward with them. In the same week, they'd made their Offerings, promised their undying love to each other, left their home village, and settled someplace new. Within a month, they'd conceived Jack - and by Winsol Pensive was heavily pregnant and alone, her beloved dead at the hands of a ravenous madman.

Yeah, ravenous. Too young, Jackal learned the full details of his father's death - including that not only had he been slaughtered, but eaten by his murderer. (And really, any age is too young to have images in your head of some crazed monster that was once a man chowing down on your father.)

Jack's childhood was the perfect example of the old saying 'it takes a village' - because it really did. After her pregnancy, Pensive never seemed to fully recover all of her strength. She was often ill and would sometimes spend weeks at a time where she was too weak to leave the house. The village stepped in. They checked in on her and her young son and helped them however they could. When he was a baby, this meant that the other women of the village often took turns staying with them to care for him and make sure that his mother had company and a hand around the house. As he got older this meant that he was often seen about the village playing games and doing odd jobs just to keep him busy and burn off all that childhood energy young boys always seem so filled to the brim with.

When it became apparent that he wasn't merely a Prince but a young Warlord Prince, he was more and more handed over to the two elderly gentlemen that lived together in the center of the village. Both retired from former service, and one a Warlord Prince, they guided him not only in the understanding of his caste but also in what it meant to be a man. They taught him about honor. They taught him about love. They taught him about finding joy and about executing swift and powerful vengeance.

Even with all they taught him, with all the support they gave him, he still wasn't ready for it when his mother died.

When his mother was taken.

She had been doing better, enough so that she was able to make monthly trips to the larger town a few hours north of their village in order to sell her tapestries and other woven wonders at the market square. Jackal usually went with her, as did several others from the village who made the trek for similar purposes. He went with her like normal - but instead of travelling back with the rest of the small group at the end of the day, he'd decided he wanted to stay in town in order to pursue a pretty little someone who had caught his eye at the market square.

Jackal didn't need to make it all the way to the village the next morning in order to discover that something had gone wrong. He found the remains of the party in the road. A shattered wagon, various supplies, a few limbs, but no people.

Nothing.

Which was also what his enraged search, tearing through the trees, turned up. Nothing, just nothing. So he returned to the village. There were more searches, but still nothing. Nothing. Until, weeks later, someone came back. But they weren't... them anymore.

And that, that was when Jackal learned what had happened to his mother. The group had been attacked by Brood. But instead of killing them, they'd taken them - taken them to change them. His mother, he discovered, had not survived - not in any form. This... this thing that had once been his neighbor hadn't come back to apologize either. It hadn't come back to warn them or bring the bodies of those who had fallen to their families - because Jack's mother wasn't the only one who hadn't survived. No, it had been caught lurking nearby the village and when approached it had attacked, like an animal and had needed to be restrained. When they'd done getting their answers, they'd put it down. It didn't matter that it wore the face of their friend - it wasn't him anymore.

But Jack... couldn't blame the man's former family for not being able to be there, and for the cold looks they gave Whisper for having been the one to do it.

Jackal made his Offering the following night. The night after that, he left the village. It took him almost three years to hunt down the Brood responsible for the murder of his mother and the lost ones from his village. When he finished... he knew he couldn't be done. He knew what he had to do. So instead of turning around and heading home, he moved forward - in search of another monster to put down. There was nothing he could do for the dead, but he could make sure those things didn't take anyone else once he caught their scent.

Character in Play:

It was chilly outside. Cold, actually - definitively cold. Unlike many, Jack didn’t mind the cold overmuch - even when he was wintering further north and the cold set in so deep it wrapped directly around the bones in a toothy bite of aching chill. Cold that deep was sorrow made physical to most, but Jackal Morningstar was a man with fire in his blood to the point where not even the cold could penetrate further than just skin deep. So the cold, even when it was rigid and frigid and frightfully sharp - was only just cold and nothing more.

As such, while others might be taking refuge inside their homes or toasty inns and taverns now that the night had stolen away the sun’s respite, Jackal was out among the trees. He wasn’t opposed to spending the night at an inn or anything like that, and he liked an ale as much as the next man, but more often than not it was just more convenient (and less expensive) for him to camp out as he made his way back and forth throughout the forests of his homeland. He’d been travelling like this for years, a forester and a hunter and an avenger of lost souls - hunting down the demon beasts that had corrupted his brethren and sending them back to the unholy Nothingness they’d surely spawned from before they could infect anyone else with their… Waste.

The Brood.

He had just finished a hunt, actually, just a couple days ago. He’d been escorting a family through to a safer area - further from most of the Brood activities - when they’d pleaded with him. One of their number had chosen to go the way of the Brood, had abandoned his family, had twisted his own soul to become one of them. They had begged Jack to save him, if he could - and so he had, in the only way that was possible to ‘save’ one of those monsters. He had hunted down the creature, he’d killed it, and then he’d prayed for whatever was left of the man’s soul. Having completed his his hunt, he sent word to the family from the nearest town and then began the trek back north.

Tonight, he was camping in a wooded little grove near a stream deep enough and fast enough not to have frozen over yet, even in the bitter cold. He was, in fact, just coming back from relieving himself, when he came across some ridiculously fancy fellow skulking around near his shielded campsite.

“Who the hell are you?” he snorted in offense, looking the man up and down. To be fair, in the near darkness it was hard to see much more than shadows and far too many buttons for him to be a real person. Real people didn’t wear that many fucking buttons. Aristos did though. Prissy prats were obsessed with them.

Y'know, I think Summer Sky to Purple Dusk Warlord Princes are gonna become a thing for me. They're gonna form a boyband. It'll be so rad.

((Pls reduce to SS-PD, and am I allowed those +10s for single descent even though I used a discard? I always forget. My brain's not so good sometimes.))
