Personality

Personality:
As an untried, inexperienced Queen who has just passed her Virgin Night and Offering, one would think that Inheritance would have a streak of uncertainty about her path in life. The fact that she doesn’t tends to surprise people. On the surface, she appears to have much of herself, and her path, in order, but if one were to dig a little deeper into the rocky ground of her outward personality, beneath it churns a bitter determination to do one of two things:

One, not be her mother.

Two, not fail.

Her mother has set a high standard for her in one of those arenas. Solstice is a Queen of efficiency and results, even if she is lacking the warm heart of a Queen. Inheritance, on the opposite hand, strives to differentiate herself from her mother in every way possible, even if it’s hard to do. She’s not a very warm person by nature -- she’s not welcoming, she’s not effusive, she doesn’t smile much. She’s a “get it done” sort of woman, like her mother (which she realizes) but she tries to do it with more personality than her mother does. She tries to show mercy when her mother wouldn’t have, things like that. Sometimes, she sees exactly why her mother has shut down all emotions. It’s just easier that way. But Inheritance doesn’t want that life for herself.

So, she has sex, as much as possible and with multiple partners. She rides free in the forest with just her friends. She parties late into the night. She may not fall into states of deep drunkenness or drugs but she does enough to take off the edge she feels. She practices with her bow in the hopes of using it in real battle one day. As many things as she can do to differentiate herself from her mother, she does it.

Inheritance prefers her friends over her family. She compares herself to others a lot and can be rather harsh with herself, a side effect of her mother’s upbringing. While not physically vain (she tends to hate her appearance), she can be intellectually vain. She knows she has the brains to beat other out but she tends to lack the experience. She’s still young, age-wise, even though she feels a lot older. She doesn’t want children and plans to live her life without them simply because she doesn’t want to put her own child through the same pain she went through.

Likes:
  • 1 - Gatherings. Parties, concerts, large dinners. Anything that involves crowds of people. People bring new experiences, new opportunities into Inheritance’s life. Hours of good conversation, adrenaline charged adventures, etc. Gatherings are where memories happen.
  • 2 - Horses. Horses represent a freedom and individuality to Inheritance. She’s amazed at how expressive they can be, as well as the variety of personalities they have. Her room is decorated with woodworked horses and she prefers to spend her free time out riding with friends.
  • 3 - Weaponry. Something that she’s always had to admire from afar, Inheritance has learned everything she can about weapons and their uses. As a Queen, she is only allowed to carry small daggers, occasionally a bow for hunting. But she craves more than that. Her room is modestly decorated with weapons, mostly old or ornamental, and she loves watching guards practice.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Her mother. In the beginning, Inheritance’s relationship with her mother was warm and affectionate but something changed over the years and now that relationship is hard and brittle. Where her mother lacks warmth, Inheritance tries very hard to show it. She doesn’t agree with her mother’s strategy with ruling, no matter how effective it is, but she hasn’t yet learned of another way to do it.
  • 2 - Her reflection. Her face is too angular. Her hair often refuses to smooth itself and twists into straw-rough waves. Clothes don’t seem to fit her as well as they do others her size. Basically put, she doesn’t like the way she looks. Inheritance keeps very few mirrors around her abode and tends to pointedly ignore ones she passes.
  • 3 - Being a Queen. Yet another thing she shares in common with her mother. Inheritance has never wanted to rule but yet she was born into it. Even with her forced hand, she tries to buck those expectations as much as she can by refusing to don a Courtly polish, or show ambition towards ruling. In a Territory with a plethora of Queens, she’s intent on being passed over as much as possible for a ruling position.
Fears:
  • 1 - Never living up to her legacy. As much as she loathes being a Queen and being the daughter of the Moriwen Queen, Inheritance can’t help but feel this burden of legacy upon her that she has to accomplish. But does she get to decide that legacy? Can she be anything other than a failure for not being her mother’s daughter?
  • 2 - The destruction of the forest. Inheritance has heard of Territories where there is no forest, no lush canopy to shelter. She shudders whenever she thinks about those Territories. Within her own homeland, any time there is a loss of the forest, this fear resurfaces and she does everything in her power to restore the trees.
  • 3 - The Brood. For the longest time, the Brood have been boogeymen lurking in the dark forests beyond her room. Now, they are becoming a reality that Inheritance doesn’t want to face. She shushes conversation about them unless absolutely required, mostly because she isn’t sure how the face monsters who were once people like her.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Preservation spells. For someone who seems bent on escaping history, Inheritance has a special place in her heart for the longevity and continuation of certain, material things. Preservation spells, for her, require very little Crafting effort, so she can have many of them going without taxing her Jewels.
  • 2 - Growing spells. This goes a bit further than just simple Gifting. Inheritance has figured out how to amplify and weave this sort of Craft into extended release spell that helps germinate seeds into seedlings a week or two sooner than usual.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Travel Craft. The Winds and other forms of psychic travel are scary for Inheritance, who prefers to be on the ground. She’s hamstrung herself with this sort of Craft and now won’t travel along the Winds without someone to initiate the spell.
  • 2 - Emotional Healing. Like her mother, Inheritance struggles with emotions at times, and emotional healing Craft feels awkward to her. It’s probably her lack of empathy that causes her weakness in this Craft but now Inheritance just stubbornly refuses to use it rather than admit a weakness.

History:
Born under a bad sign. An unhappy accident longing for an origin. These are phrases that Inheritance attributes to the circumstances around her conception and birth, which stemmed from her mother’s Virgin Night and the mere ritual it was. No father figure in her life, just her mother. At first, this was all Inheritance, who was destined to be the culmination of her mother’s knowledge, needed. She knew warmth, she knew affection, she knew love.

Somewhere around her Birthright, Inheritance began to feel that change. It wasn’t her mother being disappointed in a Rose Birthright, it wasn’t the birth of her half-brother Scimitar -- it was something...else. Something Inheritance, even as an adult, could never understand or identify. But, regardless, the divide began, and with it, the bitterness that came from a child trying to wrestle with rejection. Over the years, the garden of affection, warmth, and love withered away to a blighted patch of resentment, fighting, and unfulfilled needs.

It wasn’t until her teenage years that Inheritance began to find something akin to family -- or her idea of one -- within the solidifying circle of friends. Sage became both the sister she had always wanted and the best friend she needed, while Javelin and Ravage became better brothers to her than her own. What began as lessons together extended into evenings, weekends, and weeks together -- away from the increasing tensions that time with her mother always brought. Freed (mostly) of her mother’s restraints, she began exploring more of herself -- staying out late, learning some fighting techniques from her male friends, trying out sex. Yes, she almost messed up her own Virgin Night, and learned from that lesson, but once she figured out where the line was, she tested it often.

But the one thing Inheritance remained defiant on was learning how to be a proper Queen. Dea al Mon had a plethora of Queens, she argued, so why did she need to learn everything about it when obviously someone more qualified than her was going to take over a District or Province? She even went to so far as to apply this indifference to her Offering, descending to a Purple Dusk instead of a full Opal. This alternating defiance and indifference became the major point of contention between Inheritance and her mother and the reason why Inheritance started spending longer and longer periods away from home.

Which was why she wasn’t around when the Brood attacked Oberaula. Or when her mother was kidnapped.

Character in Play:

“Your mother doesn’t miss you?”

Inheritance lolled her head back so that she could look up at Ravage, who was perched somewhere behind her. The heady scent of sensimilla filled the air, wafting from the rolled cigar being passed between friends. They were deep into their inebriations that night, with sensimilla and wine shared around the circle. Sage was making out with some Warlord just beyond the firelight. Inheritance’s gaze lolled back towards the sister of her heart, watching how the firelight and shadows danced along skin being slowly more revealed. In a few minutes, Sage would probably pull the Warlord deeper into the forest to continue unwatched. That’s usually how these nights went.

“No,” Inheritance answered Ravage flatly. She took another pull of the sensimilla, letting the smoke carry away her bitterness. “She never misses anyone,” she said. Whether it was true or not didn’t matter. Solstice, her mother, the Queen of Oberaula, acted like she never cared about anyone, even her own daughter. There was a frosty aura to the Queen that made Inheritance wonder sometimes if she had been adopted. There was no way such a woman could have carried a child -- two children, actually -- to term in that cold, cold heart. Only the memory of watching her mother swell with the gestation of her half-brother Scimitar told Inheritance otherwise.

Three other people came to join the circle, led by Javelin, who, like Ravage, was Inheritance’s other brother of her heart. The four of them -- Sage, Javelin, Ravage and Inheritance -- were a merry little band of young adults exploring what it meant to have reached their majority and make decisions on their own. And yes, many of those decisions were the ones that their parents had told them not to make. So far, no harm. Minus that one time Javelin broke his leg…

Inheritance picked up the interest in the other male’s eyes the moment he looked at her. She lifted her chin, challenging him. She was not a pretty woman, she thought, but males found her angular face fine enough for a romp. “You brought friends,” she remarked to Javelin, still looking at the new male. The new witch was eyeing Ravage with a standoffish glare to her expression.

“Friends who bring gifts,” Javelin said. All three held up more wine and what was probably a basket of food. A rustle of leaves and a low moan had everyone looking momentarily in the direction of Sage and her lover, who were getting up to continue their partying elsewhere, but then every gaze went back to Inheritance, the Queen of this little debauchery Court.

With a wave of her hand, the sensimilla cigarette floated towards the newcomers. Javelin took the first drag, passed it along, then went to give Ravage a brotherly push of greeting. The new male came to sit beside her while the witch tried to figure out where she belonged at this party. Inheritance smirked. She’d figure it out soon enough, once the drugs and alcohol settled in. She wasn’t Inheritance’s problem anyway.

Sharing another pull of sensimilla, Inheritance threw all thoughts about her mother aside with a toss of her hair and asked the new male, “So, do you like to be on bottom or top?”
