Distinguishing Features:
Someone apparently doesn’t know what it means to not stand out. Hearsay keeps his hair dyed a vibrant red, a subtle show of defiance, not sporting the light silver blonde that it is naturally, and has striking pale blue eyes. To top it all off something went haywire because he’s only five foot nine.

Personality

Personality:
It is not just that Hearsay’s psychic scent reads both Healer and Warlord that sets him apart. It is that the scent of the forest seems to be part of his very being, as if he is of the forest and not just someone who lives within it. For Hearsay it is less stressful to be part of nature, not having to worry about animals or trees and whether or not they approve of his mere existence.

As he got older he discovered that he was incredibly aware of the emotions of others. A strange combination of the sharp tang of dislike in someone’s scent and being able to actually attach that to the sensation he felt as he read their emotions. As a Healer, this would have been a glaring weakness, but it was his Warlord nature that kept him from submitting. He was able to keep a calm, level head and navigate around situations where he might have otherwise crumbled.

Most shun his abilities as a Healer unless the situation is truly dire. Worse that even just being a Warlord was not allowed as people failed to look past his scent and see him for the potentially capable young man he was. He was seen as too much of a distraction for those around even when he wanted to help within the village and work, as any good young Warlord yearned to do. Being a Dual-Caste male has heavily influenced him and left its mark. Deprived of being able to shine in either Caste, the natural compulsions of Healer have meshed together with natural desires of Warlord to be dependable and sure-footed and turned into someone who has strong desires to look after the well-being of trees and, to a lesser extent, animals because he has not been allowed of any other way to do so. He would much prefer that he would be able to help the people of Dea al Mon but there just does not seem to be a way to do so.

Having learned from a young age that even his parents were uneasy around him, and only having a small handful of people not immediately shun him, Hearsay is very much starved for affection and attention. It makes him latch onto those that do, glad for even the littlest bits that he can get. He is, however, paranoid about such things and always keeps tabs with his empathy on people to make sure they are not just setting him up to be later made fun of or otherwise tricked.

Were he to find a situation where he could be supported and not beaten down, Hearsay could turn into someone strong and capable. As he has yet to find that instead he merely yearns for it with his entire being but fears that Brevity may be right and he is nothing more than an atrocity that needs to be put down. For now he continues to search for such a place, or person, that could look past what he is to see who he is. Hearsay has the potential to be a powerful ally, a trusted companion, but there are few willing to give him that chance.

Despite being left with the bitter ache, Hearsay puts on the airs of being hopelessly optimistic. It is better that the world think they cannot get him down, that nothing will pull him apart. To let that be known, to let them realize that they have beaten it into him that he is wrong, is admitting they have won and he just cannot do that. His empathy has taught him well to know just what to project to hide himself behind happy smiles and false emotions. The truth is that he wants to give in, to just let them have what they want, but the Warlord in him tells him that he has to keep fighting and so he does.

Somewhere out there is place for him. Hearsay just hopes that he finds it before he truly becomes jaded or worse happens.

Likes:
  • Nature - There is no other place that calms Hearsay as much as being out in the forest, listening to the wind blowing through the leaves or the calls of animals. If he could spend his entire life within the forest he would but there are darker things than him within it. With all the time that he has spent in the forests, Hearsay has learned well how to navigate the canopy with ease. He knows which limbs can support him and which cannot unless he bolsters them with his jewels (or lightens himself). Basically: he enjoys freerunning (parkour) across the tree tops. If his feet never have to touch the ground, it’s that much better.
  • Socializing - As much as he expects that no one wants to have anything to do with him or that he could become easily worn out, Hearsay enjoys being able to sit with and talk with people. Hearing the stories and tales of the lives of other people is always worth his time and Hearsay wishes he got to do more of it.
  • Singing - Sometimes one does not have to search hard to find Hearsay when he is hiding within the upper limbs of the trees. His voice carries well through the leaves while he sings, almost as if the wind is carrying it. If you ask him who he is singing to, the answer is simple: the forest and everything within it. Singing melodies, even just humming, can smooth out the nerves and calm him.
Dislikes:
  • Brevity - Some say twins are supposed to be two parts of a whole. Hearsay is not sure what whole he’s supposed to be part of but it’s certainly not the same one his twin is part of. Brevity is everything that Hearsay is not: a fighter, a hunter, a Warlord Prince. He is the sharpness to Hearsay’s softness and has spent most of his life making sure his younger twin knows it. Brevity is not above physically harming his twin and Hearsay is painfully aware of this.
  • Not Being Properly Trained - Hearsay has a basic healing knowledge, mostly instinctive and self-taught. The risk is too great that someone training him, despite his natural Dual-Caste nature, could suffer punishment for doing so. Instead he is left with a hodge-podge knowledge and mostly being good at healing, of all things, trees. Hearsay hopes that with time he will learn more, pick up things from books and otherwise, but he does not know if that will ever be possible when no one wants to give him a true chance.
  • Bullies - When it comes to others Hearsay cannot tolerate bullying of any sort. It is one of the worst things in his book and while he will not stand up for himself, he will put himself into a situation if he thinks someone is being picked on. People who bully often do not expect someone to stand up to them and, honestly, they never expect him to say something. At least if the bullying is redirected upon him, he’s saved someone else from feeling as he does.
Fears:
  • Warlord Princes - Hearsay tries to not let this fear get to him, he really does, but it’s hard to do when he’s been bullied most of his life by one. While other things could kill him, it was his twin brother almost carried it out. To that end, Hearsay is incredibly wary around Warlord Princes and on constant alert in case he needs to duck out of what can turn into a nasty situation.
  • The Brood - Their numbers grow and so do their attacks. Hearsay was not so afraid of them until he realized that one was interested in him and where there is one, surely there are more … He is not a fighter, as they scoffed at training a Healer (even if he was also a Warlord), and knows that if he were cornered he would face his end. That he has drawn the focus of at least one Brood means that there are likely more to come. He remembers their fleeing of Kassel and the ferocity and focus that the Brood possess. The idea that it is focused on him is a terrifying thing indeed.
  • Being Alone - For all his dislike of his twin, Brevity, and preferring nature to people, Hearsay fears being alone. Even when out in the wood there is noise and sounds of life around him that let him know that he is not alone. His deepest fear is that his brother is right: that he is an atrocity, that no one would truly want someone like him, and that ultimately he will end up alone with no one who would call him friend or more.
Craft Strengths:
  • Empathic Craft - A unique blend of reading emotion and psychic scents, Hearsay discovered that at a young age he was incredibly aware of the emotional states of those around him. It was self-preservation at it's finest and, when he does not shield properly, he can find himself affected by strongly felt moods and emotions. As he has gotten older he has learned how to use such knowledge to navigate dealing with those who would rather he did not exist. He has also used it as a way to help those that will let him close. An excellent confidant, he is able to help people work through complex emotional states. While he cannot truly heal them, physically or emotionally, he is able to at least help them understand their feelings. In short he is an amazing therapist.
  • Nature Mending - When Hearsay was learning his way as a Healer his first patients were not of the Blood but trees. Similar to bone crafting, he is able to set a broken branch of a tree (or plant) and use his craft to encourage it to grow and heal back in place. This enables tree to continue on and avoid a potential death blow that would see the tree eventually rotting away. As he has gotten older he has learned how to heal trees of sickness when he finds it, as if they were a person and stricken by a disease. There is a fear of this particular ability being discovered. While he is only healing trees, it is still healing, and he does his best to keep it secret, not wanting to be denied one of the only ways he feels as if he can help.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Reverse Healing - While he has at least an instinctive understanding of healing and mending, Hearsay lacks any and all capability with this particular Craft. It could be beneficial to be able to reopen and heal things properly, especially with the depth of his Jewels, but instead he is at a loss. This style of healing is nauseating to him and, truth be told, were he to try it properly he would find that his Jewels barely respond to his attempts requiring double the energy.
  • Healing Tonics - With no proper instructor, Hearsay has very little to no knowledge of this basic craft that most Healers learn. Worse: despite knowledge of what herbs are good for, their uses, he cannot seem to blend them together into something useful. Something always seems to go wrong as things are too strong or too weak or not right at all.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Mercy Elerbeck (94 - d. 186AP) - Healer - Blood Opal to Sapphire*
Father: Amity Elerbeck (123 - b. 71AP) - Warlord - Opal to Green*
Twin Brother: Brevity Elerbeck (22 - b. 172AP) - Walord Prince - Summer Sky to Green*

(*jewels selected, not rolled)

History:
A member of the Red Cloaks, Mercy Elerbeck was a fierce, strong woman whose husband, Amity, was not only her husband but partner in making sure that she was able to carry out her duty. So when it became obvious in 171 that she was with child things took an unexpected turn. More so when it was apparent that she was going to be having twins. It was in the early spring of the next year that she gave birth to her sons. The first born was named Brevity, to signify such moments in life, and the second was named Hearsay because he was born an hour later and because she still could not quite believe that twins truly did run in her family (and a subtle reminder to herself and to her child to give credence to such things; rumors and hearsay were not always just that). It was within the first hours that Brevity surprised the new parents with his psychic scent settling and revealing that he was a Warlord Prince. For a time they expected that Hearsay would as well, they were twins after all, but the hours turned to days and eventually a few months passed and there was no shift.

It did not matter to Hearsay’s parents. They were happy that he was a Warlord that could eventually serve within the Ebon Guard. It would enable him to follow in his father’s steps when the time came unlike Brevity who could only voluntarily serve as a Warlord Prince and more likely to find a place at a Court than anywhere else. Yet that potential future came crashing down when, as toddlers playing and chasing one another, Brevity fell and badly skinned his knees and palms. Whereas the older twin had begun crying, Hearsay immediately tried to console his brother and soothe him and - in the manner of a child who only has untapped potential, no skill, and no proper Craft - tried to heal him. It was Hearsay pressing his hands against Brevity (gently papping him) that Mercy found the pair. She realized, with rising anxiety, that there was a change in Hearsay’s psychic scent as he curled his small hands against her leg while she tended Brevity.

Warlord, his scent had always said, but now it also carried Healer as well.

From there on out Hearsay’s life changed. Their entire family was viewed with suspicion because it did not matter that the Caste was natural, it was still rare and looked upon with derision as it was incredibly infrequent and practically unheard of. Hearsay’s only playmate was his older twin Brevity, who sometimes managed to include him with other children, but even then that never seemed to go well and only rarely would he be able to play.

Yet things shifted again when their Birthright ceremonies came. Brevity had been so proud of his Summer Sky showing it proudly to his parents. Hearsay had not wanted to show his, trying to hide it for fear of more disapproval, but that was not possible. The moment that Brevity realized what his twin held, he was mad and had to be held by their father during a fit. Brevity was the son they truly wanted, not Hearsay who he had been blessed with an Opal that marked him darker and more favored.

A rift had already been growing but in the aftermath of their Birthright ceremonies, Brevity was downright toxic to Hearsay. While he would behave around their parents, as they tried to keep up the appearance that they did not favor one above the other, it was not so around the others in their hometown.

During this time that Hearsay began to realize that he was more than a little aware of the emotions of those around him. It was a strange mix of being able to read both scents and emotions, attaching the scents to the feelings he picked up upon. While it was one thing for the young Healer Warlord to suspect that he was not liked, that others looked upon him as if he was wrong, and another thing to know it with certainty. More and more he began to spend time within the forest near their home. It was there that he began to learn his first steps as a Healer because there was no one to teach (who would; even though his Caste was naturally manifested, teaching him was forbidden). Hearsay found trees that had broken branches and tried to mend them together, learning the process over trial and error and time.

Eventually he began to realize that there were more and more signs of unrest within the forest and his mother started preventing him from going there. Brevity, as well, was locked down to the house which lead to more than one unfortunate scuffle between the twins (wherein Hearsay would simply let his brother beat him). It was that year, in 181, that the Brood began their attack Kassel - the Province they called home - and his mother nearly died. Worse that Hearsay had to watch as his mother was brought home, barely alive and healed by someone lighter than him (a memory that will never leave him; being unable to help his mother because he was untrained).

With the Brood now pushing upon Kassel, and having children and needing to recover, Mercy and Amity moved to where her family had once called home just past the mountain range north of Kassel and south of the Capital, Nieste. It was here that they reconnected with the Elerbeck family but, more importantly, Hearsay discovered Kalis Ecthelion. A cousin through his mother, Kalis became the first person in Hearsay’s life that did not care about his Dual-Caste nature. She, in fact, gave no fucks about most things. When she discovered him in the forests outside of the town trying to heal trees, she merely watched him and said nothing and continued to return every day and watch him.

Eventually she began to socialize with the young Healer Warlord, helping him work through some his social anxieties and dealing with people. For the first time since he could remember Hearsay felt genuine and true affection for himself that was not tainted by the contempt of his Dual-Caste status. Over the next few years, under heavy watch to make sure that there was no training of any sorts, Hearsay began to grow out of his shell little by little. His mother also eventually returned to Kassel, leaving Amity behind with the children. It was their home and the Brood could not be allowed to take it. Hearsay, as he was not really welcomed at any kind of lessons - not by the other children, as Brevity made sure to encourage the other youths against him - instead received private lessons with his father. It was better this way; ensuring that he knew Protocol and Etiquette and not causing disruption were he to have lessons with a group.

No one expected that Kassel would fall and that Mercy would not come home. What had already become a tense situation became that much more untenable at home for Hearsay. Brevity had already turned any sympathetic to him against him - save for Kalis - and his father did nothing to stop it. It had been his mother as the driving force to keep things civil and not let things teeter too far the other direction. Thankfully Hearsay had learned how to stand up for himself, to shield and push away others when they became too toxic, and was able to simply retreat when it was clear that his presence was just going to create turmoil. It was also during this time that Hearsay was able to reach out and help those that had fled from Kassel. There were those that had been traumatized, more than just physically hurt, and it was with his inherent empathy that Hearsay was able to reach out and help those few that would let him close to do so.

He was always careful of doing actual healing, despite an innate understanding of physical healing, but no one seemed to pay attention when he would simply sit and talk with those that were recovering. While he was not capable of the emotional healing a Queen could do, he was able to - with his natural empathy - help people work through things. In this time he became something of a therapist to those rare few that would let him talk with them. It was not true healing but it was something more than he had ever been able to do before and it helped satisfy the need in him to help others.

Not long before his Offering, while Hearsay was tending to a severely injured tree within the forest, he discovered what he thought to be a forest spirit. It began to talk to him, though he could never truly sense where it was coming from other than the trees, and speak with him about his ability to tend to and heal trees. The forest spirit seemed to know just what Hearsay had gone through. The way the others had treated him just because of what he was and how much no one wanted him around. There was a way, the forest spirit told him, to get away from all that. All he would have to do is just let it help him.

Hearsay could sense the dark desires and the edge of frustration within that forest spirit, though he could not be certain of where it was or what it looked like, and did not agree. Instead he merely continued meeting with it, listening to it as it whispered things about Healers and their abilities. If he wanted to learn more all he had to do was just go with it ... Still, he continued to resist and eventually time came for his Offering.

Brevity made a choice to perform his with all the pomp and circumstance he could have, just to continue to shove in his twin’s face things that he could easily have and the other would have to push for. Hearsay had no interest in that method anyway, preferring instead to perform his himself. The same night, within the forest, Hearsay delved deep within himself. He dove fast and quickly, past Green and Sapphire, straight to Red. When the morning came an uncut Red was held within his hand, darker than even his mother had been.

That morning was meant to be a joyous occasion, a celebration, but instead it was one that was a fight for his life. The moment that he came home with his Red, Brevity was there waiting. He was there to crow and gloat about his Green but the moment that he saw Hearsay holding his Red, his fury grew. It was only through Amity’s interference that Hearsay managed to get away with his life. He retreated to Kalis, recovering there and letting his brother calm himself. After that there was no chance of him returning home, his mere presence enough to set off Brevity.

The only chance he thought he had after he healed was to join the Ebon Guard as he was supposed to now that he had performed his Offering. Yet as soon as he showed his face he was met with harsh looks and harsher words. What, they asked, was he doing there? The Red Cloaks were clearly where he was meant to be. Hearsay was reminded - felt each deeply - the inherent disgust and dislike of baring two Castes.

From there out Hearsay was more or less a ghost within their town. More and more time was spent within the forest and it was there that he began to realize there was a dangerous design to the corrupted trees therein. It had been missed when he had only his Opal but now with his Red he was able to discern more, see signs that he had not because whomever was altering the trees had been darker than him and disguising their work. When next the forest spirit found him, once again tending to a tree that was strangely altered, he realized something horrifying.

It was not a forest spirit at all but Brood. They wore the Sapphire and had been shielding themselves from him but now, with his Red, were not able to deceive him. In that moment he learned the true face of his forest spirit: Pestilence. She was the one that had been altering the forest and he had drawn the attention of. All niceties had faded, Pestilence no longer keeping up the game of being a forest spirit trying to lead him down some destined path. Worse; she knew all about him, his capabilities and his weaknesses. Pestilence left him with an ultimatum: come with her or face her wrath and his death, if she was feeling kind.

Hearsay did the only thing that he could do in that situation: run. He continued to run, pushing himself to get as far as way and to the north as he could get. It is only as he has reached Devinos Province that he has begun to slow down, hoping that he will find somewhere to rest and that Pestilence gave up the chase.

Character in Play:
Hearsay should have known better, truly. Except he had let his own foolishness (his hopes and dreams and beliefs) blind him to the truth. It was what lead to him being where he was, far to the north and not at all close to home. He had thought a forest spirit had been found within the trees. One that he could hear and understand and not just think he was getting a response from the forest as the wind blew through the leaves.

Childhood whimsy pushed away instinctive fear and paranoia that he knew better than to not listen to. What he thought ‘forest spirit’ was Brood. The very same Brood - though not the literal same - that had were always looking for an opportunity to steal away those who were not careful but especially Priestesses (and sometimes Healers, it seemed).

It had been a fear since the first Brood attack he could remember in vivid detail, not blurred by child memory. It was a fear that he was being watched- stalked. They were simply biding their time until a perfect opportunity came up and he could be snatched away to do whatever it was they did.

Hearsay did not want to think about it.

Instead he focused on easing his breathing and letting the spooked feeling fade. He had thought he had been caught up with, that his not-a-forest-spirit - Pestilence, they had called themselves - had found him and was going to drag him back. It had not been the case but he had been running for too long now and was beginning to flag.

For all of his strength, the depth of his jewels, he could only keep himself going for so long before he would collapse and that was likely exactly where they wanted him.

Yet this forest he was in now felt fresh and alive and vibrant. The winds as they blew through the trees, told a different story than the ones in the south spoke to him. It was a place he could stop, that much he was certain.

Hearsay pushed himself up to stand, his feet no longer dangling over the branch he had sat himself on. The canopy was an excellent place to hide himself but he needed to find a better place to rest. Somewhere he could nest and weave protections around himself to not be seen or heard.

With a small boost from his jewels, he launched himself forward and pulled himself up even higher. Eventually he would find a place to rest but for now he simply climbed, the sounds of the forest all around him and soothing frayed nerves.
Petitions (if any):

Caste Requesting :
    Healer Warlord
Reasons For Requesting these Castes:
Hearsay was born out of a wanting to create a character that would be a pillar of support for Epiphany and likewise be supported by her in turn. The more I started envisioning his character the more I realized that I wanted to be able to explore something rare and not common within Dea al Mon in the process too. That said I almost immediately wanted to make him a Healer Warlord because it is being that - a Dual-Caste male within the territory - that makes him an excellent companion and bonded male for Epiphany.

As the darkest Queen within the territory, and with her emotionally traumatic past, it would take someone who likewise is dark jeweled and someone who has also suffered emotionally but has not buckled under it to support her. His ability to look out for her emotional wellbeing and her looking out for his is going to be a defining characteristic of their relationship. Hearsay is meant to fill a gap that exists around Epiphany to be emotionally supportive but also grow with her into the both of them being eventual players within the greater scheme of things within the territory.

Without his duality, without the turmoil of his past and the potential troubles of the future, he would not be able to be the character that he is or be able to be a plot mover like he is intended to be. Hearsay’s Healer nature - the natural compulsions of that Caste - are enhanced and made that much stronger by being a Warlord. The fact that his natural drive to guard and look after others, not only their physical health but emotional as well, has been a constant source of scorn and dismay is a defining characteristic and important to who he is. It’s also why there are plans that once he is in play he actually learns how some defensive combat to protect his stupid butt because he really needs to learn how to do so (and get over not wanting to hurt people as they clearly want to hurt him).
Plans for this Character:
Hearsay will be serving as Epiphany’s Steward, most assuredly an unorthodox appointment but still happening all the same, within her Court but will also be serving as a needed dark jeweled healer with the current situation as it is with the Brood. One who is capable of not only tending to the physical injuries (though traumatic injury treatment is still a bit beyond him without proper training) of those at Court but also able to help navigate the emotional burdens and lighten the load as something of a therapist.

Hearsay serves as the catalyst of a major plot arc that involves the Brood attacking Glory Glade, as Pestilence and other Brood have followed him as he fled to the north. This will be bringing Omega Company as well as members of the other courts of Devinos to the area and serve as a stand against the Brood.

As a dark jeweled Healer within Dea al Mon, Hearsay can play a role in attempts at controlling the Waste (with consideration to plot that states otherwise but that doesn’t mean it can’t be explored ~). He will also be lending his talents to healing those that are harmed in the aftermath of the attack upon Glory Glade.

He will operate as a counterpoint to Pestilence and part of her frustration with the Blood of Dea al Mon. She seeks to corrupt and alter forest life and Hearsay has a penchant for healing it, playing a foil to her (and Wraith’s) plans and machinations.

Potentially: Hearsay will serve as a starting point for Epiphany to seek out Healer training herself from a Healer. Which probably wouldn’t be a bad thing with how likely she is to get hurt exploring the forest and being a wildling of the forest.
