The Basics

Character Name: Epiphany Estinaria

Age: 22 (171 AP)
Race: Medium lived. Dea al Mon
Caste:  Queen
Birth Territory: Dea al Mon
Home Territory: Dea al Mon

Birthright Jewel: Uncut Opal
Offering Jewel:  Uncut Red

Role: Queen of Glory Glade
Faction: Devinos Province

Appearance

Play By: Nicola Peltz
Distinguishing Features:
Much like her mother, Epiphany's hair runs more gold than silver, her eyes more like the water of a lake than the water of the seas she constantly dreams of.

Personality

Personality:
Epiphany has spent her entire life dreaming of the sea. Despite her people being of the forest, there is a deep longing within her that yearns for the expanse of the ocean. Her favorite songs and stories have always been of the sea. She would ask for them over and over again as a small child, until her mother's throat was raw from the telling, and Epiphany would finally fall into a blissful slumber.

The young Queen looks strikingly like her mother. This is something she has been told her entire life. Considering her mother is a beautiful woman, it is generally intended as a compliment, but it has heightened her sense that she is really only a shadow of the other Queens that surround her. Epiphany struggles to define herself as a Queen among Queens. She sees her lack of one distinct strength like her tutors have as a failing as opposed to understanding that there is strength and utility in a well rounded Queen who can manage multiple aspects of her Craft and her rule.

She also lacks, as teenagers often do, any perspective on just how young she actually is. Her expectations of herself are extremely high, and are further skewed by constantly comparing herself to the adult Queens around her.  Having been thrust into the position of hiding her mother's deep sleep and creating the appearance that everything is just as it should be within the Court, Epiphany lacks awareness that these tasks are far above her current ability. Instead, she feels that she is nearly always failing at living up to what is needed of her.

These insecurities often play out in sudden and often unpredictable bursts of temper, fury spilling over onto those around her without warning. While this kind of rage is not uncommon among the more feral Dea al Mon, and Queens are openly acknowledged to hold within them an especially dark fury, Epiphany feels a gnawing guilt after each of these outbursts. This often leads her to try to make it up to everyone and take on even more responsibility, which perpetuates the cycle.  She refuses to acknowledge that she may not be strong enough or experienced enough to carry everything she is holding on her shoulders, and she stubbornly will not ask for help. Failure is simply not an option.

Despite these difficulties, the corner stone of Epiphany's world is the indelible knowledge that she is loved. Dulcimer may have her supporters and detractors, but no one has ever questioned her undying love, dedication, and patience for her daughter. And Osprey, Epiphany's father, has been an ever present figure in her life as well. Regardless what Dulcimer's personal relationship with Osprey has been like, and how distant it has grown over the years, she has never discouraged or interfered with his being a constant and steady part of Epiphany's life. Epiphany's personality has been carved into being by the strength of the love her parents have for her, and that inner knowledge shines through, even in her most difficult moments of doubt.

Poised on the verge of transitioning to a woman, and, potentially, a ruling Queen, Epiphany is a mess of emotion, and a constantly moving target when it comes to predicting how she will approach any particular problem on any particular day. This stands in contrast to her intense love of order and rational logic, her physical body's transformation warring with her mind's need for steady, predictable balance. Not having one spins the other out of control, and leaves the young Queen continually grasping for a stability that seems consistently elusive and just out of reach.

Likes:
  • 1 Numbers. They are neat and perfect and they never lie. Even the irrational ones can be easily categorized and tamed, finding their ways through her mind at a speed that would make most people absurdly dizzy. Epiphany can often be found pestering Fulcrum to go over the District's numbers with her and teach her everything he can about the ins and outs of that part of the Court.
  • 2 Singing to her mother. She does it everyday. People tell her that Dulcimer can't hear her. Epiphany doesn't care. If it's true and she can't, then it doesn't matter, and it gives Epiphany time to sit with her, hold her hand, brush her hair. And if she can, well, then every moment that Epiphany sits and sings to her is a moment that her mother is not trapped in insufferable boredom, and knows that she is not alone.
  • 3 The structure of Court life. There is a rhythm to life at Court that Epiphany thrives on. Like the other Dea al Mon, she desires an ordered life. She has never known any other way, and she doesn't want to. She can't really picture her life outside of living at Court, and it is one of her more selfish motivations for protecting her mother's rule.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Anything that requires an overabundance of physical coordination. Whether it be dancing or wielding a bow, Epiphany's clumsiness overrides her capacity to successfully maneuver without injuring herself or someone around her. Those who have known her the longest remember the days when her father first placed a bow in her hands, or a dagger, or when her mother tried to teach her small bits of offensive Craft, and the disastrous results that ensued. She is generally not trusted with any implement at all sharper than say, a butter knife.
  • 2 Competition. Yes, she's a Queen, and there are an abundance of Queens, and yes this means that in order to gain, and hold, and rule a Court, one must prove oneself to be the very best. But despite Dulcimer's lessons and efforts to the contrary, there is something that doesn't sit right with Epiphany about Queens competing to hold positions of power, instead of working together to care for their lands and their people.
  • 3 Unclear expectations: Epiphany likes to know what is expected of her. When she feels like requests or expectations are unclear, she gets extremely overwhelmed and flustered, sometimes to the point of near panic. Because of this, she tends to be very precise in her wording, and insists on others being very precise as well.
Fears:
  • 1 Her mother never waking up. Whatever can be said about Dulcimer as a Queen, or a woman, Epiphany is clear to the core of her being that she is a good mother. She made a point of setting aside time to spend with her child no matter the cost. She never belittled or shamed her daughter's sometimes strange or unusual thoughts or questions, her bright young mind piecing things together in a way that others might not. Everyone else is worried about what will happen if Dulcimer doesn't wake up because they are worried about Eddersea, and the tide of power, and the fighting of the Queens. Epiphany cares about these things, but nothing like how much she cares about getting back her mom.
  • 2 Her own mind being unstable. When Savior came to her mother's Court, Epiphany thought that he was hers. But he told her this wasn't true, that she had mistaken the feeling she had for him as the bond when it was actually nothing more than a young girl's crush and admiration. The feeling never stopped, and never eased, and the constant dissonance of what her heart and soul tells her and what her mind knows to be true, as Savior would need to feel the bond as well for it to be genuine, has created a world in which Epiphany cannot trust her own mind or her own judgment, and often turns to others for confirmation about what is "real."
  • 3 Bringing shame to her mother. It has been drilled into her for her entire life that this must not happen. It drives her perfectionist tendencies, and her need for clearly defined boundaries and expectations. She must do her best, at all times, and the guilt and sense of failure she feels when she doesn't is utterly crushing. She doesn't need external forces to punish her or tell her she has harmed those around her, her own internal compass of right and wrong is so strong that she is quite aware of every action, and every word.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Diplomatic Craft. Epiphany has a way with words. And it is more than just words. It is actually a way of weaving Craft into her words that allows those around her to actually hear her, no matter how stubborn, angry, or closed minded they may be in the moment. It's a skill her mother stumbled upon accidentally while Epiphany was observing a Court negotiation at her mother's side at the age of 16. No one was listening to each other, and Epiphany got frustrated, and finally lost her temper. When she spoke, she spoke clearly and smoothly, translating what all parties had been attempting to say. The negotiations were quickly closed after that, and Dulcimer, thrilled to learn of her daughter's gift, spent a great deal of time helping Epiphany hone this specific Craft, having her arbitrate even the smallest of skirmishes as practice.
  • 2 Healing minor injuries. Epiphany gets hurt. A lot. Like... all the time. She is quite possibly one of the clumsiest witches to have ever been born into the ranks of the Dea al Mon. It became clear early on that learning some minor Healing would serve the young Queen well, and so it was woven into her earlier Craft lessons so that she would be able to take care of the more minor, and near constant, injuries herself.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Witchfire. It seems her clumsiness extends to this particular Craft skill. Epiphany has accidentally set fire to her own bedroom pillows while trying to light a lantern on her nightstand, once set the curtains on fire in the formal dining room while trying to assist with the candles in the chandelier at the age of 12, and is no longer allowed in the kitchen to get herself a snack at anytime, under any circumstances, ever. She has been pretty much been banned from all use of fire of any kind without appropriate supervision.
  • 2 Offensive Craft. Despite her father being a member of the Ebon Guard and her mother being a skilled fighter, and despite both of them taking great efforts at attempting to teach their daughter at least the very basics of offensive Craft, Epiphany lacks the natural talent of her parents. More than that, it seems no matter how hard she works at it, she simply can't master the skills that come utterly naturally to other Dea al Mon.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Dulcimer Estinaria Rose to Purple Dusk Queen, Ruler of Eddersea District
Father: Osprey Lansing Summer Sky to Opal Warlord Prince
Siblings: none known

History:
Epiphany Estinaria is a Queen born to a ruling Queen. She has never known a life outside of Court. More specifically, she has never known life outside of a Court her mother ruled. From her earliest memories, Epiphany has been learning to rule at her mother's side, or from her mother's hip, or sitting on her mother's lap.

The Court quickly adjusted to the presence of the young Queen. Dulcimer insisted that she could be both Queen and mother, stating that and neither interfered with the other and she would listen to no one who wanted to claim otherwise. She would raise her daughter, not a string of immemorable care givers. No one desired to raise their Queen's well known temper by arguing over the matter with her. As a further benefit, the young Queen did seem to have a calming effect on her mother.

Very few of Epiphany's early memories do not have her mother at the heart of them. Her mother singing to her, her mother teaching her about the land, her mother ruling their District. In the years leading up to her Birthright Ceremony, Dulcimer was rarely seen without Epiphany nearby unless the girl was sleeping or spending time with her father. This too Dulcimer honored: despite the difficult and tumultuous past that existed between the Queen of Eddersea and Osprey Lansing, including Dulcimer breaking his Jewels in punishment, Epiphany was always allowed to have a strong and acknowledged relationship with her father. She knew nothing of the history between her parents, just that she had two people who would move the very moon for her if she asked.

On the rare occasions that Dulcimer did have to deal with something that would be inappropriate for a young girl, Epiphany had an entire Court of willing playmates. The young Queen became quite adept at befriending adults, although interacting with her peers was significantly more difficult for her. She felt like they didn't understand her the way the adults did, like they didn't really speak the same language. And of course, Epiphany's penchant for clumsiness, something the Court has long since given up the hope she would grow out of, has always meant she had a special relationship with the Court Healer. As a child, she found herself in the Healing Rooms several times a week at least. This frequency has only diminished due to her own skill at basic healing now, enough to get through most scrapes and bruises on her own, although the more catastrophic accidents still require a Healer's Craft to mend.

When it came time for her Birthright Ceremony, Dulcimer threw a lavish party to celebrate. And when Epiphany came away from the altar cradling a large uncut Opal in her small hands, the entire District joined in celebrating the future strength of the young Queen. Epiphany remembers vividly the look of pride on her mother and father's faces that day, and the way Dulicmer beamed at her in joy. Her mother was the most beautiful woman she had ever known, and never more than that day.

Very quickly after that things changed for Epiphany. She still spent a large amount of time with Dulicmer and Osprey, but she was also introduced to tutors of every kind imaginable. Most didn't last long. They found Epiphany's vocabulary surprising and intimidating and resented being treated as her equal. When they sought out her mother for support, they were instead summarily dismissed, as Dulcimer had no patience for anyone who did not appreciate the weight of the task of educating their potential future Queen. As the years passed, those who could adjust stayed, and Epiphany remained as strong willed and outspoken as ever, holding forever the dialectic of being both as fierce tempered as her mother and growing to be an incredible arbitrator of peace.

Through out her teens, Epiphany remained extremely close to her mother, and slowly their relationship developed into one of a more adult nature. Dulcimer consulted Epiphany on Court matters constantly, further grooming her for the future she foresaw for her daughter. Dulcimer showered her with praise when Epiphany made well reasoned choices and gently chided and corrected her errors when she did not. Epiphany took these slight redirections as crushing blows, and worked even harder to continue to be worthy of her mother's love and pride. As Epiphany drew closer to her Offering, Dulcimer wisely invited other Queens to tutor her daughter as well, realizing that there were gifts that Queens like Allure could offer her that she might not otherwise gain access to.

These were happy years for Epiphany, albeit often dangerous ones for the Court. Epiphany's skill and finesse with mediation Craft was more than made up for by her inability to get through a day without injuring herself, someone else, or accidentally lighting something on fire. Many through out the Court call her Grace or Lady Grace as a testament to the many years they have survived her growing up, which Epiphany quite enjoys as it makes her feel close to those who have created the safe haven of the Court that has always been her home. It has, however, been made very clear that these softly teasing nicknames are for the Eddersea Court alone. Anyone outside of the Court who tries such a familiar endearance is quickly schooled in the appropriate etiquette and Protocol of addressing a Queen of the Dea al Mon.

Before her mother's deep sleep, the only real heartache Epiphany has ever known is the fact that the man she thought she was bound to from the first time she met him at 12 years old, the man who serves her mother in the most intimate of ways, has made it clear to her that her feelings and instincts are wrong. Savior is not hers, no matter what her heart and soul screams. She has waged an internal war on her own instincts for so long, repeating over and over to herself that she is wrong, that there are times where Epiphany feels quite close to losing her grasp on reality entirely. She discloses this secret to no one, for there is far too much that she must carry. There is no room for a Queen who rules from the Twisted Kingdom, and she will not succumb to her own madness.

When Dulcimer fell into the deep, unending sleep, Epiphany was devastated. Not only is her District at risk, and her mother's throne, she has never known life without her mother at her side. She feels utterly lost, and yet, must do everything in her power to hold the Court together. Over the past few weeks, Epiphany and the Court have created a constantly shifting mirage, allowing everyone to believe that nothing is amiss in anyway. The Court has always run extremely smoothly as Dulcimer wouldn't have it any other way, and now, Epiphany is relying on that more than ever. She is attending events in her mother's stead, hearing District issues in her mother's place. No one finds this odd since Epiphany has always been at Dulcimer's side. It is simply assumed the Queen is allowing her daughter some experience of what it would be like to truly rule before Epiphany makes her Offering and her future is revealed.

But how long can Epiphany, and her mother's Court, continue this charade before someone finds out the truth? And what will be the cost when they do?

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
Four years had passed since Savior Caranthir had come to serve her mother’s Court. Four years. At sixteen, that represented a full quarter of Epiphany’s life. A quarter of her life was no small amount of time. It was longer than any of her tutors had stayed. They seemed to last somewhere between two weeks and two months, although there was the one unfortunate fight instructor who had only lasted two days. She did have a few tutors who were now approaching two years, which put them near the one eighth mark. Epiphany was quite proud.

The young Queen was always breaking things down into fractions of time, finding numbers a straightforward way to frame her experiences. It was, perhaps, why she knew everyone in the Eddersea Court’s daily schedule. If any member of the Court wanted to know where another was at a particular moment, they just asked Epiphany. When she was younger, it had been kind of an amusing trick. Now, everyone simply took it for granted that Dulcimer’s daughter knew the near exact location of nearly every member of the Court within a minor margin of error.

It really wasn’t that complicated. Nearly everyone at Eddersea kept consistent hours, the day in and day out of the Court running as smoothly as if it were a single, living entity, with her mother its beating, shimmering heart. That was why she knew exactly where Savior would be this afternoon, because he spent time arranging her mother’s schedule every afternoon. There was no other reason. No. Other. Reason.

It didn’t matter that she could feel his presence as he moved about the Court. Or that her heart leapt into her throat every time he walked into the room. Or that she wanted to be near him when she was upset, and felt calmer as soon as she was. None of that was relevant to the fact that she happened to know exactly where he was at almost every moment. None of that mattered. Right? Right.

She had waited four years, a quarter of a lifetime, never bringing up the subject again since her first overly excited exclamation that he was hers! He had denied any connection between them, telling her she was mistaken. It had hurt like nothing else had ever hurt before, her first real taste of rejection. But she was older now. More mature. More studied. She understood things in a way she never could have then. She was sixteen, after all, and in another four years, she would be a woman and would be making her Offering to the Darkness. She had spent four years doubting herself, choking on both her words and her instincts. If she was going to do it for another four, she needed to hear him say it again.

Moving quickly through the halls, she made her way to his office, an outer set of rooms connected to the suite that was adjacent to her mother’s. She didn’t need to worry about running into her right now. She knew she would not arrive back at Court until late tonight. She knew because she always knew. It’s what she did.

Taking a deep breath when she reached his door, she reached up and knocked firmly. Exactly four times.
