Appearance

Play By: Dayana Crunk aka Dayana Melgares

Distinguishing Features
Alabaster and rose petals; radiant sea foam eyes and silvery hair; a voice like silk. Cherish often appears a figment of imagination rather than a flesh-and-blood Queen. It is an effect she enjoys, and nurtures. Formal, raised to rule, she can appear cool and distant, unable to bridge the inevitable gap between herself and real people.

Personality

Personality:

Cherish has been adored from the moment of her birth. Her family treasures her, and being raised in the shadow of two amazing Queens, she is remarkably balanced. Given her heritage, careful training, gifts and Caste she does tend to a touch of arrogance, a sort of assumption that she can handle any situation without aid.

A Queen, a scion of an ancient family, she has a powerful sense of Duty to her people, though she tends to define ‘her people’ as those either directly in service to her, or living in the small village that centers her world. She understands profoundly that her place is to rule and guide, to both serve and be served. While she yearns for that eventuality, she is kept busy enough to keep that need from festering into bitterness or blind ambition.

Yet Cherish feels oddly as if she’s been dipped in wax; as if she does not, cannot possibly feel as deeply or intensely as those who are allowed to serve in the Red Cloaks and Ebon Guard. A wall exists in her soul, baring her from true, honest existence because she is denied risk, denied the chance to serve Dea al Mon with her last breath or life’s blood.

And sometimes the call to do just that is utterly overwhelming; in those moments she seeks out the risk that fascinates and terrifies her. She’s never been trained to fight, never been drilled or prepared as Charisma was, or a Queen raised around a Court where other Queens might offer her harm. Were she faced with true violence or threat, she has no idea how she might respond. Would she bring honor to the martial tradition of her family, or shame them by freezing up?

Likes:
  • 1 Queen’s Gift. the ability to Gift the Land is her favorite gift, for it completes her and empowers her.
  • 2 Jewelry making. Working in metals, stones and gems is an exercise in control and focus. It is completely mathematical and precise, with no emotional demands; yet gifting the work of her hands has a profoundly nurturing feel, and brings great joy to those around her.
  • 3 Flair Rilindisil and Thorn Zalishevin . She greatly admires her Aunt and Uncle, and seeks always to act in a way that would gain their approval. Even if it means giving up the only future she is prepared for.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Doing physical things via Craft. Cherish already feels like she lives behind plate glass; she enjoys doing things with her physical hands whenever possible. From soothing a fever to gardening, she prefers to touch and feel the world directly, even when it’s painful.
  • 2 Chess. She cannot stand any game where the purpose is to loose one’s own pieces, from card games to checkers, but chess is particularly a trial to her. Her Uncle plays often, and she has learned both for his sake and the other Ebon Guard of her family, but it is something more akin to torture, than a game, when she plays, as she positively agonizes over the loss of even a single pawn.
  • 3 Lost Veterans. the Dea al Mon are a proud and elegant people, who strive hard to care for their war veterans; they rarely permit true poverty or leave people living in filth. Recent losses have stressed the social system, and sometimes a veteran is either MIA or discharged as too wounded to continue to serve, but with no family to care for him. Cherish spends a great deal of time helping people find each other, and reconnect to society. She will not stand aside if she sees a veteran in need.

    Fears:
  • 1 A Queen’s Rage. Never trained to fight, never encouraged to express anger, sometimes it burns deep and cold within her. Cherish dreads that powerful emotion, the way it is scored into her soul. She hates how anger affects on her normally sound reasoning, and rage’s seductive pull to pure, conscious-less power. She usually feels cocooned in a web of false safety, as if she might cease to exist because her heart is numb. Yet to risk feeling is to inevitably tap into the wellspring of suppressed rage that formed her character. To risk endless wrath and grief escaping into the cold Queen’s Rage of legend. Because she sees any emotion as a risk, she is notably reserved, in any encounter.
  • 2 Being Replaced. Flair’s daughter Queen will likely be of age before Cherish’s beloved foster mother passes; the child-Queen is direct line of descent. It's terrible to see a child as a threat to a throne Cherish does not even hold. Yet Cherish has waited her whole life for this one chance. And what of Charisma? Surely the graceful Queen who helped raised Cherish deserves a Throne? Though Cherish was born to an ancient aristocratic family, raised by wealthy relatives, and prepared for decades to succeed to a Village Seat, she has very little that is truly her own. Pampered with every luxury and comfort, she despises the fact that she is, in fact, a ‘poor relation,’ nothing but a pauper amongst her peers.
  • 3 Sanitoriums. Cherish saw her own family sundered not by the Brood, but by smooth-tongued deceivers who had their own agenda of fear and bigotry. She does not know what is happening in these secretive, hellish places but she knows what deceit looks like. The Black Widows, Priestesses and Healers who held her father prisoner were tight lipped and tense to the point of conspiracy. There would be no need for such complete secrecy if they were doing what they claimed they were. Maybe some Sanitoriums were legitimate, butCherish doubts it. After all, the Queen of al Dea al Mon didn’t tolerate her own sickened daughters being sent to such a place.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Queen’s Touch. She can ease anyone, though it would be stronger in a Bonded male.
  • 2 Scrying. She is very good at finding people; at determining who left a certain blood stain, or even discerning if two people are related via minute and careful observation of body parts. Part Queen’s insight, part carefully studied Craft, her Scrying is something remarkable.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Combat Shielding. Cherish has never been trained in the combat arts; she cannot finesse shields swiftly or efficiently, nor manipulate them into the many different types of Shields used in combat. Likewise, she is unpracticed at breaking shields, never having ever had to do so.
  • 2 Power Bolts. Again, Cherish has never been trained in this art. She can manifest them as a child just past their Birthright might, as she did access this instinctual level Craft when she was young. But she has not properly practiced it, and tends to summon a wild collection of bolts that hit all around the target, not merely what she aimed at.

    History:

In 155 AP, Cherish was born to one of the oldest, and purest, Aristo families in Dea al Mon. The Rilindisil family has long protected the Dea al Mon and the Ebon Wood. It is their tradition for males of the family (save for Warlord Princes) to serve their entire lives in the Ebon Guard, rather than to serve in a Queen’s Court. The females are encouraged to spend time amongst the Red Cloaks as well, saving, of course for Queens.

With service as the defining characteristic of her family, and that honor being soundly denied to her, Cherish has struggled to find a way to make her mark. Her family is so involved in service in the Guard that they do not hold sway over the powerful sort of Throne that Cherish sees as their right. In a family boasting three adult Queens and only one Throne, she expects to wait several more decades before the grief of her Grandmother’s passing opens up the throne of Linithor.

It is a destiny she has been raised to, almost since her birth. A land she has loved since her earliest memory. That ‘earliest memory’ is of her Aunt Thorn’s Offering Ceremony, held right in Linithor. Cherish had slept through most of the night, but she had woken early. She witnessed the beautiful dawn, as the Black Widow emerged with her Red Jewel, like a symbol of hope and power. That began a warmth and fascination for Thorn, that lingers to this day. To Cherish, she is the mystery of the Ebon Wood, embodied.

Even at such an early age, (she was only two) Cherish was accustomed to spending a great deal of time with her extended family. Both of her parents had active military careers. Usually, she stayed with either her Grandmother, Queen Periwikle, who was ruling in Linithor, or her Aunt, Queen Charisma, who ran the family business. Both Queens were joyful, vibrant and a pleasure to be around. The grief and sorrow both carry are all that has changed over the decades of Cherish’s life; these two ladies are still the center point of stability, home and family for her. And for her brother.

In 159 AP, her baby brother Esteem was born. Cherish was all of four at the time. At first, she was unsure what to think of this small, tiny child who hiccuped when he laughed too hard. Yet he soon became a constant in her life, his presence more certain than her parents’. A playmate, toy soldier and miniature Court to tend to, all in one, he is her best friend to this day. Though she has to share him with the Ebon Guard, of course.

At eight years old, precisely, Cherish felt the Call to attain her Birthright. Under the guidance of her Grandmother, she wrote out the invitations to her family herself, in a shockingly fine Calligraphy for a child of that age. That ceremony was amongst the happiest and most joyful events of her entire life. Through chance and effort, most of the Rilindisil clan was in attendance, making it a family reunion. Both of her parents were there; happy, whole and home on leave at the same time. Cherish received a perfect Rose Jewel, delicate and yet filled with hidden currents, much like the child herself.

And the following year, 164 AP when Cherish was nine, she learned the true depth of that and breadth of that hidden power. Her father was diagnosed with the Waste. Strangers came, to take him to a Sanitorum to be studied. To keep him from becoming a threat to his own family, they said. Cherish was enraged, and fell into the legendary Cold Rage of a Queen. Only her mother’s skill and greater depth in the Abyss kept Cherish from killing those who took her ailing father away. More than Cherish hated the Brood, she despised those who took her father from her. Neither she nor her baby brother would ever see him again.

Within days, her mother surrendered the still raging and difficult to control Cherish as well as her brother into the care of their Grandfather Shore, his wife Thalia, and his lover/Bonded Queen Periwinkle. She could not return to her duties with the Red Cloaks fast enough; such haste, in her time of grief, led to her death in a Brood attack, in Kassel, within weeks of returning to duty. There were whispers it was suicide; Cherish had another name for it.

    Betrayal.

From the time of her mother’s death, Cherish stopped at nothing to try to see her father. She ran away from her Grandmother, wrote letters, even managed a semi-successful kidnapping of a worker from the Sanitorium where her father was held. She had forgotten how easily adults can send Psychic Threads. But to no avail; she was not permitted to comfort her father or tell him of the death of his wife. This time of wildness resulted in the assignment to her person of a permanent Escort, her Cousin Maven Rilindisil. The steady-tempered Purple Dusk to Green Warlord was an Ebon Guard Veteran, discharged out early due to lingering damage to his back. He blames every white hair on his head on Cherish, but he slowly became the second member of own, personal Court.

Early in 165 AP, when Cherish was ten, a letter was delivered to her. The letter said that her father had managed to suicide, rather than become a monster. As if such an eventuality ought to win forgiveness to those who stole him from her. To this day, Cherish believes he died of grief and loneliness, locked up in that dreadful place. A deep seated fear of the Sanitoriums and those who run them was formed within her, and has never eased. For they were not punished for their actions, were never called to account. They could take whom they wished, with little or no proof, and no one could gain say them.

With the death of their father, Grandmother Periwinkle formally made Cherish and Esteem Wards of her Court. During this time of grieving, Cherish became very close to her Grandparents; they knew what it was to suffer loss, and still endure. Their care and concern prevented the angry, bereaved child from being obsessed with either bitterness or vengeance.

But she remains determined to learn the truth of the Sanitoriums.

When Cherish was twelve, in 167 AP, her brother Esteem received his Summer Sky Birthright, just like their mother’s. Cherish insisted on standing in for their deceased parents, declaring his paternity in honor of their dead father. Grandfather Shore spent weeks tutoring her in the precise and accurate Protocol to follow, so that the ceremony went flawlessly. Studying together with her brother brought a few years of peace to the children, and brought the siblings closer together. Their friendship was something Cherish deeply needed to survive her own stormy passage through adolescence.

173 AP, when Cherish was eighteen, her Virgin Night was seen to with great care and concern, by a distant Larethis cousin, Quartz. He perished in combat shortly thereafter, and she was heir to his weapon and gear, which she in turn bestowed upon her brother Esteem. It was through Quartz and his family that she came to know Terra Larethis. This Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk witch became close, the third member of Cherish’s informal Court.

Cherish wasn’t ready for her offering until 20; then, in 175 AP, she could no longer put off the need. She’d waited as long as she could, to try to quiet the rage within. Cherish’s Offering was a lovely Purple Dusk. The Ceremony was quiet, attended to by fewer than those who had gathered for her Birthright. Yet it was not lack of love, that made the numbers so sparse. Her parents had not been the only losses over the twelve years between.

In 177 AP, When Cherish was twenty-two, it was her baby brother’s turn. Esteem had turned eighteen; he would be allowed no time to grow into his Offering, for his Service to Dea al Mon would necessarily begin in this year. His Offering was an Opal, and he left for the Ebon Guard at once. Though his required service ended in 182, he serves to this day. His going was a bad omen. Things began to change in the Ebon Wood. By 180 AP, Kassel was lost, foot by pain filled foot.

And in 185 AP, Cherish’s grandfather Warlord Prince Shore, the man who had raised her, died of the Waste. But Cherish was more clever now, and made certain her Grandfather passed before any traitors dared confine him to a Sanitorium. His wife, Grandmother by courtesy Healer Thalia, perished of a broken heart shortly thereafter, adding new heartbreak to Queen Periwinkle, Cherish and her brother. And the losses only grew deeper, with Charisma’s children, grandchildren and Bonded also perishing one by one in the following years.

By 192 Cherish had just turned 37; her baby brother had served honorably in the Ebon Guard for fifteen years. Rumor has it that the new Queen of Devinos hates the Sanitariums as much as Cherish does. She’s heard there might well be a position open to her, everything from some sort of advisory or council seat related to the District, to being head of the commission to dismantle the Sanitoriums.

    Character in Play:

Cherish Rilindisil neatly brushed the last crumbs of her blue berry muffin from her dress, but the nine-year old’s brilliant, sea-foam eyes were focused entirely upon her prey. Silvery curls bobbed in twin pigtails, and her sensible, sturdy dress swished when she stood.

The witch Cherish had coaxed into the woods blinked, and shook her head as if to clear away the fog of disorientation and sleepiness. It didn’t work, though.

    Chamomile tea is soothing.

Distilled Chamomile tea is a powerful sedative, used for wounded veterans.

But Craft enhanced Chamomile tea was another thing, altogether.

Cherished stepped closer as the witch raised her hands to her head, blinking painfully. It hurt something deep inside of Cherish, to have distressed the witch. Yet that quiet voice could not overpower the rage and fear that drove the child Queen. She spoke in a voice of absolute authority, deliberately copied from her foster mother, Lady Periwinkle.

“Now, Lady Osprey, I will give you an antidote ... just as soon as you Appear the keys to my father’s cell, and tell me precisely where he is.”

Cherish didn’t even have time to feel triumphant before the astonished witch slumped to the floor, either unconscious or pretending to be so.

The rage that the young Queen kept bottled up inside erupted in a wild blast of power, covering the witch in shattered petals, mud and ice.

“Wake up. Give me the keys. Now.”

Sea Foam eyes lit with power, as she recklessly channeled all that her Jewel could hold.

    And more.

“Wake. Up.” This time it was a Craft-enforced command, and the witch woke. A fey mood was upon the young Queen, instincts older than time awakening access to a power she’d not even known she held. The full strength of a Queen’s Geas erupted from her.

“Give me the keys to my father’s cell. Tell me precisely how to find him. You’ll neither eat, nor sleep, until my father is free. But when he is, I’ll ask my uncle to lead an expedition for your lost son. A life for a life.”

The full force of the Geas tore through the young Queen, and blood spilled from tender palms not yet used to the blood letting that was part of her Caste. She grew dizzy, and had just reached out a hand to accept the blackened, cursed key when powerful Craft slammed into her, blasting her into unconsciousness.
