Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Before becoming Brood, Ash Caraslin leaned towards a joy of life that seemed almost carefree. He would laugh, smile, relax. Make jokes with friends. Get lost for hours in the forest with his twin. Being a bit reckless but always just shy of getting really hurt. He was patient when it came to teaching others. He had all of the markings of becoming a good member of a First Circle when the time came: reliable, personable, levelheaded, protector.

Becoming Brood tore most of that away.

The Ash that is now is a stern, cheerless man, divided in so many ways. He hardly ever smiles. Hasn’t laughed unless it was out of irony or sarcasm. His general mood gravitates towards dour, with a grim line to his lips and a hardness to his eyes that was never there before. He is now unforgiving, replacing the patience he used to have. His speech, which used to be light and confident, is now low and growling. Brief. He is selective about the company he keeps, where he used to be more inclusive of all. That joy of life has turned into a fierceness to endure. His carefree attitude has turned into firm control. Where he used to love the daytime, he now prefers the night, with the shadows that hide how physically transformed he has become.

Guilt over killing his father to become this monster plagues him. Ash finds himself altered in so many ways, physically and mentally, that he barely recognizes himself. From the back of his mind, the wolf spirit that seeks to devour him calls their shared body by another name: Fang. His fingernails are now short claws. His gait is more prowling than walking. There are gold flecks in his eyes and longer canines than before. Ash struggles to remember who he was before, a war he is slowly losing day by day. He has nightmares regularly and it affects his ability to tell the past from the present. Sometimes, it feels like the crazed wolf within is threatening to split Ash’s very skin in an effort to escape and in those moments, he thrashes and writhes and howls while trying to maintain a grip on his humanity. When he comes back to reality and finds himself rending the raw flesh of some innocent creature…

He doesn’t realize that his own resistance to being Brood is causing these sorts of attacks, driving him crazier. But he keeps fighting because he believes the alternative is death and he is too cowardly to embrace. Not while there may still be a chance at salvation. He protects the Den of the Brood because of his driving need to protect something now that everything else has been torn away. He draws comfort from hunting and sparring, from being in the forest. That, at least, has not changed, only diminished, and gives him hope that he can return to some semblance of the man he once was.

Likes:
  • 1 - Running. It’s one of the few things the wolf spirit and he enjoy together -- taking off at a ground-eating lope into the forest, letting the miles and troubles fall away in the distance. He finds running to be a meditative thing and uses it to center himself.
  • 2 - His other wolf brothers. Pack, he thinks of them, even though they’re all monsters. But at least they’re monsters like him, who understand the spirit within. He will seek them out regularly because of that understanding.
  • 3 - Verdant. Ash isn’t sure why he’s drawn to the feral Queen because it isn’t the Bond. Maybe she reminds him of his sister in some way -- forever untamed. Verdant seems to be the only person who understands how deeply conflicted Ash can be sometimes, offers solace and comfort, and gives him something to cling to and protect in all of this turmoil.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - The Broodmother. Genesis is crazy, the kind of fanatical, off-balance sort that Ash despises because he doesn’t want to become it. He steers clear of her if possible, and if not, he’s distantly cordial with her so as to leave her presence as soon as possible.
  • 2 - Vegetables. Before he was changed, Ash loved a good salad. Now, he can’t stand most green vegetables and he blames that constant craving for meat on the wolf locked inside of his body.
  • 3 - Being Brood. Ash is Brood because his other option was death and he wasn’t brave enough to die. He may protect the Brood treasures but that sprouts from his need to protect the only family he has left, since he failed his father and twin. Ash does not like being who he is, bound to a creature that causes such division with him, part of a faction that will probably destroy Dea al Mon with its feral, unbound nature.
Fears:
  • 1 - Never being cured. It is known among the Brood that the process that made them Brood is irreversible but Ash refuses to believe that what was done cannot be undone. This fear of never being cured is one reason why he shows such interest in the artifacts and history of the Brood -- he’s subtly searching for the cure.
  • 2 - Killing his twin. Sparrow means so much to Ash, even now that he’s become a monster. The thought of Sparrow is what helps Ash maintain a grip on his humanity. To lose her, especially at his own hand, gives him nightmares.
  • 3 - Being fully converted. Currently, Ash is able to hang on to scraps of humanity by reminding himself that the Brood is evil but the whispers from the wolf, being surrounded by the Brood every day -- it’s starting to wear down on him. It’s starting to make...sense. And he doesn’t want it to.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Cloaking. Based heavily off Sight Shielding, Ash has developed this Craft to mask his movements, sounds, and psychic presence but only to keep himself hidden from his twin. He doesn’t want her to know that he checks up on her from time to time. This Craft doesn’t work during battle or with others -- it’s targeted specifically at Sparrow.
  • 2 - Preservation spells. This was the reason Ash was chosen to be the Protector of the Den: his skill with preservation spells. They require less of his Sapphire and he sets the spell with pretty green vines. Though the vines fade from sight, preserving things -- history, weapons, forest, knowledge -- gives Ash a sense of peace still.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Battlefield/Triage Healing. Blame it on the wolf all he wants, the real reason Ash is now so weak in this area is because using healing of nearly any sort reminds him of his Healer twin and becomes overwhelmingly painful.
  • 2 - Finishing kills. Ash tried to become better at this because of his unwillingness to learn battlefield healing more but the more he practiced it, the more guilt ate him for -enjoying- it. Now he avoids it, letting either suffering or mercy flourish where a swift death would be better, because better to die another day than to live with one’s self as a monster, right?
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Rose Caraslin, Purple Dusk to Green Healer (age 101, born 92 AP, deceased)
Father: Wolf Elevir, Yellow to Summer Sky Warlord (age 88, born 105 AP, deceased)
Siblings: twin Sparrow Caraslin, Purple Dusk to Sapphire Healer (age 32, born 162 AP)

History:
Ash remembers far better days.

He remembers being a wild child in the forest with his twin, spending hours amidst the trees and brush, collecting both treasures and scratches like children of the forest do. He remembers teaching his twin how to fight, her teaching him how to heal injured critters. He remembers his mother’s voice calling them home at dinner, his father’s laughter as they recounted their wild adventures of the day over the meal.

He remembers their dual Birthrights, he remembers his teenage friends, he remembers dreaming about a future where he would serve in the Ebon Guard for a few years and then look to train in a Court when he got bored of it. He remembers shy kisses with pretty girls, looking up at the stars and wishing, everything being idyllic and perfect.

And then, ten years ago, in just one night, it was shattered.

Sparrow had just passed her Virgin Night and Ash...well, Ash was a man now but neither were ready for their Offering. Still, the Brood cared not about readiness. They descended upon the village, ravenous. Sparrow escaped. Ash did not. And as he was dragged away, bond and crying, he prayed for his twin’s safety, for her dreams, because surely his life -- and all of the dreams that came with it -- was about to end.

He learned that night there were far worse fates than death.

They were taken back to the Brood encampment, given a choice. Ash’s father chose death. Ash, cowardly, did not. And that was his first mistake, his first curse. With one hand, Genesis slit the throat of Ash’s father. With the other, she forced the gift of damnation down Ash’s throat.

His father’s name had been Wolf. Ash didn’t miss the divine irony in being bound to a wolf spirit after feeding on his father’s flesh.

He embraced his curse in order to survive. Surviving, enduring in the hopes of reversing his fate, became the only thing on Ash’s mind. Instead of joining the Ebon Guard, Ash joined the brotherhood of other wolf-spirits, a howling pack of rabid animals that protected the haven of the Brood. Instead of training in a Court of the Dea al Mon, he became instructed in the zealous, crazed ways of the Brood. Survive, he told himself. Thankfully, his duties mostly kept him away from battle, away from slitting the throats of his former people. Grateful that the Darkness had given him this little bone, Ash bent himself towards two goals: protect what he could of the Brood without hurting the Dea al Mon and finding a way to reverse this curse.

Character in Play:
If you do not accept the gift, you will die.

In his nightmares, Ash was forced to watch the past over and over. And everytime, it became more gruesome, more hideous, more painfully true. He was forced to watch Genesis Gil-Gannus, the venerable Broodmother, lean over his father, one hand wielding death, the other wielding something far worse, offering his bound and beaten sire a choice.

His throat tightened like it had that day as he watched the hand wielding death draw the blade across his father’s throat, watched the blood, which was always painfully brighter in his nightmares than it had been that day, flowing forth, rivers and tributaries of it. His father had chosen to die, rather than become like the glorious creature before them.

His stomach roiled as he feasted on the proffered flesh, stuffed down his throat until he was glutted and exhausted and his tears were only thing he could summon to give voice to his pain. He had cried so much in those first few years that now he was empty of tears, devoid of emotion.

His head bowed as he accepted his damned fate, the hand of Genesis that wielded something far worse than death. The furious wolf spirit held in that hand...it consumed his soul, devoured his humanity. It twisted itself around his heart and then twisted him into something else.

His head, once bowed, now thrown back. Howling.

When he woke, his throat was raw, just like it had been that day. He rubbed his forehead, dispelling the start of a headache, but nothing could dispel the monster that was already prowling within him, eager to begin the day’s hunt.

Ash Caraslin shrugged on a shirt and went out, trading one nightmare for another.

...but not yet ready for play!
Your ratio is currently at 6:13. You'll need to bring it to 6:14 to make room for Ash, or buy a balancer item for him from the points shop in order to play him.
