"I don't think this is a good idea," said Hearsay for what was likely the tenth time. He was fidgeting a great deal, following after Squall as they made their way from the Queen's Residence--the Court of Glory Glade--and moved along a lesser traveled path through the forest. The rustle of wind through the trees carried their formless whispers, the touch of their presence upon his senses always there.

They also were not helping matters, he thought, because it felt as if they were just as eager as the Warlord Prince seemed to be. While Hearsay had overcome a great many of his flaws--those things that he had taken on because of how the Children of the Wood looked upon him--there were still others that remained.

Such as the fact that he still was not comfortable when it came to actual sparring. Hearsay had strengthened himself, became stronger as he worked through the training regime and forms that Obscenity had hammered into his mind, but he still did not like the idea of actually sparring with another person. The idea of striking another, even in practice, did not sit well with him.

It wasn't as if he did not understand that there was a necessity here. That he needed to be able to defend himself physically as well as potential others but ...

"Squall, how far out are we going ... ?" They had traveled a fair distance away for all that they were still within the boundaries of Glory Glade's protections. Hearsay rarely--if ever--liked going outside of them. To do that that risked the possibility of being found somehow by the Brood. Not that he thought Squall was taking them out of the wards, the Warlord Prince was aware of what had originally brought him this far north.

More like he was still jittery and nervous about the fact that Squall wanted him to spar. With him. It made his stomach twist, hand holding tight to Squall's with no intention of letting go.

... even when they reached whatever place the Warlord Prince had prepared for this impromptu--for Hearsay--workout session.

'I don't think this is a good idea...'

"I know you don't, but you're wrong," assured Squall, calm as could be, as they continued through the trees leading away from the Queen's Residence. He wouldn't take them out too far - certainly not out into any real danger - but he wanted to get them securely away enough that no others of the Court would happen across them on their rounds. That was as much for Hearsay's sake as it was for his own - and for theirs. He didn't want anyone to accidentally prick his temper, and considering they were heading out so that he could train his Hearsay to at least be able to moderately defend himself - there were a lot of ways that could happen.

Hearsay piped up with another muttered worry and Squall paused, turning to face him. He brushed his fingers over the other man's cheek, still keeping ahold of the other hand. "Just a little bit further. I scouted the location out this morning." Or last night, depending on when you considered the morning to truly begin. It was several hours before dawn, after a late night patrol and before he'd slipped back into the Residence through his customary window and curled himself around the Healer in question for a few hours sleep before the day truly began. The extra venture had caused him to be a little bit late returning - but he'd wanted to double-check the location again to make sure that it would suit and to set up his own wards around the place so they wouldn't have to take the time when they arrived today.

He smiled, a small expression but a genuine one, filled with warmth and even a little bit of humor. Then he turned and kept leading them through the trees, Hearsay's hand still solidly in his own.

They reached the spot only a handful of minutes later. The clearing was small, but lush - and Hearsay should be able to recognize the cool prickly of Squall's Purple Dusk in the security wards set up around the area as they passed through them.

"Here," he said, drawing him into the center. "Now, I know you don't like fighting - but you've got to learn how to defend yourself, at least a little bit. We'll start simple, I promise. It's just us." He smiled, and maybe there was a bit of wickedness and flirt in the expression this time too - as if he were suggesting that since it was just them, maybe sparring wasn't the only thing they could get up to.

There were a few times that Hearsay could put on a brave face and all of them had to do with standing up for someone else. When it came to himself he often backed down, not wanting to create an issue. Except that did not work and it made little to no sense that a Red-Jeweled male couldn't defend himself.

Well, no. That wasn't right. Hearsay could defend himself somewhat but everything he knew was purely defensive. Nothing offensive. Even with his training regime, most of it outlined by Lady Falk, that was only helping to give definition to his form. Not leave him so slight anymore but more appropriately muscled as he should've been.

"I really don't," agreed Hearsay with a sigh. That he didn't like fighting. Not that he apparently had a choice in the matter. If he had known how to fight would that encounter had gone differently? Would he even be within Glory Glade? No, that was the wrong train of thought. Hearsay turned his focus to Squall and his words, that wicked smile and the shift in his scent and emotions.

Oh.

A flush spread out across his nose, staining his cheeks. "Alright," said Hearsay, rolling his shoulders and trying to relax his body so that there could be some actual sparring. He would only hurt himself if he tried anything without loosening up a little. "We can try this and see if it works."

Since he trusted Squall a far portion and knew the Warlord Prince had his best interest in heart. After all: he had known that Squall had spent a fair time scouting out this position, given that he had missed out on prime snuggling time to make sure it was secure. That was kind of a big deal.

Squall chuckled. He couldn't help himself. Hearsay was just too adorable - and being around him made him feel.. lighter, younger. Which was odd in a way, considering that, in all actuality - Squall was a very young man. He only felt so old because of the trials he'd been through when in truth he was barely twenty-one. And.. being around Hearsay? Sometimes it helped him feel that way - that he was young and things were hopeful and.. everything was just going to be alright.

These moments didn't ever really last for long, because the world was not a bright, joyful, or hopeful place - but the momentary illusions were nice and he was grateful for them.

"Excellent," he praised with a smile and rewarded the Healer with a kiss on the cheek as he finally acquiesced and seemed to be trying to loosen up.

"I don't expect you to become a fearsome warrior, Hearsay. I will protect you from the big threats and any of the little ones I can be there for. But you can help me protect you - and our Lady - if you've got a basic handle on some defensive tactics." He wondered, again, at his choices for the moves he was going to be trying to teach his Hearsay today. Initially, he'd thought about the obvious offense-for-defense sort of tactics, like sharp swipes to the eyes and kicking in all the most delicate bits... but he'd come to the conclusion that even those things would probably be a bit much for the other man, certainly for a first practice, if not.. well, ever.

It wasn't that Hearsay was physically inept. He was just...

Frankly, Squall was convinced he was incapable violence, even if it was violence intended to disarm and distract so that he could get away.

Which meant they needed to start with blocking and getting away in its various forms. Shielding too - but Squall would leave the Craft-work for another day.

"Let's see what you've got first," he offered, then suddenly grabbed Hearsay by the wrist, spun him and dragged him to his chest. One arm was barred around him, locking his arms to his sides, and the other was around his neck- though he wasn't applying any pressure.

"Alright," he breathed softly against his ear. "Can you escape me?"

The problem with Hearsay and combat--of any sort--was that he simply felt too much. Perhaps if he only felt as a Healer did when someone else was in pain it would be manageable but that was not the case. Not only did the pain of others resonate with him as a Healer but it also wreaked havoc upon his emotional well-being. While being around both Squall and Epiphany had helped him better learn to focus, to push aside the overwhelming feel of a crowd or otherwise, it had not put a stop to it.

Nothing could. It was merely a fact of his life that Hearsay felt and felt deeply. If he was not mindful it was far too easy to let himself get swallowed up and sink under the waves of the emotions around him. That chance only increased when they were directed and caused by him.

"I think so too," admitted Hearsay, knowing that Squall was right. If he had a stronger form, knew what he was doing when it came to defense, that meant he was less of a liability and better able to stay safe. In doing that he could help ensure the safety of others. If Squall had to worry about him then that meant that was less of a focus upon their Queen in a situation where it was likely needed the most.

He was working through his thoughts, not exactly paying attention when Squall grabbed a hold of him. The Healer Warlord wasn't expecting it--had not even realized things had started--and let out a startled breath at being caught. It was only the fact that he Squall's scent was everywhere, that it said safety and security and affection, that kept him from struggling immediately.

What happened instead was that he steadied himself; breathed in and out slowly to get his bearings on the situation at hand. The breath against his ear was not helping that but distantly some part of his mind thought that might've been one of the points. (The same part of him that warmed at their closeness and the feel of Hearsay pulled flush against Squall.)

"... maybe?" he finally got out, taking a step to the side and offsetting his position against Squall. Though his arms were pinned so that they couldn't raise up, he could still move them where they were. So he squirmed, curling his hand into a fist, and moved it forward before swinging it backward. There was no true strength to the blow, just as it was not going to actually hit the groin area that would've been the ideal place to hit to be released.

His first connected instead with Squall's inner thigh, the blow meant to be jarring and not painful. All he needed was the Warlord Prince to go after the arm, to curl his fingers around his wrist. From there Hearsay could get a hand on one of Squall's and use that to spin around and get free.

It certainly wasn't the most elegant of solutions, nor was he pulling it off with any sort of grace, but he was at least showing he had learned some.

Squall knew what Hearsay was going for when he started to squirm. He could have easily shifted his grip or got him to the ground in a grapple by setting him off-balance as a way to stymie the attempt - but that wasn't what this was about. This wasn't a sparring match, this was a defense lesson - and the point was for Hearsay to learn and practice techniques that would serve him against other opponents, once that likely legitimately meant him harm. Of course, the hope was that no one would be able to touch Hearsay. With Red shields and himself as a protector, he should be fairly safe..

But Squall didn't put stock in "should"s.

Which was why he was so relieved that Hearsay was willing to let him train him, even a little bit. Why he was so proud when his Healer made himself think through his lack of confidence to where he was employing this little trick here.

When the hit to his thigh landed he relaxed his grip like he was startled (though really, it was something he easily could have ignored - but Hearsay needed to see that his techniques could succeed if they were to have any hope at building his confidence that they would).

"You've got the right idea," he said with a small nod once Hearsay had spun out and was a step away. "But a tap to the inner thigh, while sudden and a bit jarring, isn't going to have nearly the effect as a strong hit to the groin." He gestured Hearsay closer, and as long as he moved in without protest he slowly returned them to the same position they'd been in before. This time, he held him with only one arm and used the other hand to guide Hearsay's hand in a slow motion, curing it into a fist for him then drawing it back at the right angle to try and get him between the legs. "It's a more awkward angle," he said with his cheek against his Healer's hair, "but while it's great if you make contact the important thing is that your captor realizes you're going for the family jewels. When he does, he's going to instinctively try to adjust his grip to keep his specialties safe." He demonstrated a likely adjustment, pulling his hips away and twisting slightly, which made his grip on Hearsay significantly let stable.

"When he move, you flail. No need to be elegant, just throw yourself in the opposite direction as hard and jarring as you can. The goal is to break out of his grasp."
