Not only Spiders Spin...
« on: Oct 17, 17, 10:43:08 PM »
The missive made a crinkling noise. Crunching as her fingers curled into a fist. A Red Queen in Dark Haven? Oh, Roux just had to be tickled pink at that. Madeline forced the heat of anger back; keeping it from reaching out further than the slightly browning paper clutched in her fist. Her expression smoothed. The frown pushed away into a lingering half smile and the wrinkled brow once more relaxed into a sweet expression.

Madeline could not afford to let her temper alienate allies. She didn't have the charisma and verve that her cousin offered. What she had was a pleasant personality and solid track record as a Queen. She also had the wit to acknowledge a new piece on the playing board; one she needed in her pocket and not in Roux's.  A Darkness Cursed Red Bloody Queen. She didn't care if the woman howled at the moon and was crazier than a shit house rat; she was a dangerous piece for a set of males they had been working to alienate from any Queens of any respectable or capable sort.

" We need her Gervais... Out of that institution and into our tender mercies. Oh I think dear cousin Josette will be all too happy to devote some resources to this" Madeline voiced. Her only current companion being her Consort. Lot of help he was working on pickling his liver as their luxurious lifestyle dwindled into one deprived of comfits. Any extra largess went straight into the war coffers. Mercenaries were not cheap.  Madeline ignored his sulking. Mainly because it would only set off her temper further.

If she didn't need a full court; if she couldn't expose weakness then she would dismiss him. Leave her vagina to grow cobwebs before she kept him another day. A threat she didn't find all that intimidating at this moment. Sex had been the last thing on her mind for months. Instead, she focused on the slow grind of harvest season; where already the effects of not giving to the land were showing. Where landen hostilities were starting to bare teeth and a place for her to capitalize on with her 'aid' shipments from hired vessels.

"And just what, pray tell, are you going to do with a mad Red Jeweled Queen Mads?" The sentence struck him as amusing. A short chortle escaped him even as fingers pried the paper from her fist. Spies carried words and the Resistance grew as more resented the growing influence of the Warlord Princes. That those spies had made it close enough to Dark Haven was due to his family and their connections through the background staff.

A hand brushed over her wrist; flittering along that sensitive inner skin. When she didn't give a gasp of aroused breath his grip turned punishing. Tight instead of tender until Madeline was gritting her teeth to keep from crying out as she felt the tiny bones in her wrist grind together.  Pride kept her from crying out but the flash of anger and resignment in her eyes; oh that was enough to get him as hard as steel.

"You can't expect to just whisk her away and set her free. You of all people know how unstable the dark jeweled are" His free hand crept up towards her neck. A silent dare for her to pull away. Even flinching Madeline held her ground; refusing to give in to fear and anger. His fingers curled to caress over her set jewel; an intimate touch that went beyond sex. Finally, she did jerk away; a quick half stride to put a flimsy camp chair between them as each panted breath set her breasts to heaving beneath her thin gown.

" Don't touch me unless I bid it!" The snarl left her and for a moment surprised Madeline. His cruelty had once been a price she paid for his affections and the pleasure of his body. Without the intoxication of lust and twisted version of desperate love it only angered her.

"You presume too much... I have no plans of releasing her at large. No doubt she can be contained with proper measures in a far more comfortable and less intrusive manner than Dark Haven purportedly offers" The Queen in her refused to let matters of state slide. Too much rode on their abiltiies to orchestrate this coupe without destroying the limited land that Chaillot offered.

"That's the only way I ever touched you Mads.. but look at you now. Peasant food and limited rations suit you. Why you are almost attractive" His words cut at her. Her hurt wrist pressed over her waist as she fought to keep back the burning of shame. The mockery cut; no matter how much she despised him it still hurt.  " You know it too... That even with your caste and connections I was the only male to ever kiss you, or fuck you.. and even that you had to put me on the payroll for"

A glass of wine struck him on the center of his chest. Anger blanched her face of any color as lips pressed thin parted to growl. "Get out! I don't want to see you for the next week... Just get out" Anger laced heavily enough that her body trembled and eyes were tears bright. Enough for him to know that he had pushed this Queen too far. Enough faith in his hold over her that he offered one last mocking bow before leaving at the sound of her choked sob.

_______________

Madeline wasn't certain how long she cried for. It took a bit of time to settle herself enough to put her appearance back together. A livid bruise circled her wrist in a good imitation of Gervais' handprint. Her dress was changed to an outdated style that involved long sleeves with heavy lace at the cuffs. Not taken in by her maid the dress was slightly loose.

"Summon my advisors and what mercenaries on our payroll that are in town.." She had work to do...

Word reached Francois that the Queen wanted to meet. He didn’t like being summoned. He definitely didn’t like the idea of gathering everyone up in one place to talk “strategy” or whatever they hell these people wanted. Truthfully, Francois had only met the minions and low-level toadies for this so-called Resistance. Lord Shingetsu handled the correspondence and discussion with the leaders, which left Francois the time and energy to do actual work with his crew. Every time he damaged a naval ship, killed a captain, or burned a ship and tossed her crew into the ocean, Francois felt like he was contributing to the Resistance more than anyone else.

But now Lord Shingetsu was in Dena Nehele, citing difficult with the locals as his reason for leaving Raej in a hurry. While Francois would have liked to learn more about Lady Moon during their voyage, Maseo had sent him back to Raej to wait for the next communication from the Resistance.

It arrived two weeks after he dropped anchor.

So it was that the Nomad’s Dream once more braved the naval blockade and arrived at the meeting point, hoping to Mother Night that everyone in this outfit wasn’t a fucking moron. He introduced himself to the help and drew out a cigarette. Of course, no one would give him a light, ruining his mood in just the first few minutes. Someone here had to have a light.

Lady Rosseau will see you now.” the butler said. Francois put away the cigarette followed, hoping that this whole thing wasn’t a waste of his time.

He wore his long black peacoat, black slacks, and a dark blue shirt. He left the tie back on the ship, smirking at the idea of asking Lady Josephine to stop by his cabin later. The poor girl would either forget how to speak or jump overboard and swim back to Raej. Francois actually wanted to see that, but pushed the thought aside as he laid eyes on the Lady Rosseau.

Lady Rosseau, I presume?” Francois asked, bowing deeply before the Queen. He stepped forward and offered his hands to her, palms up, in recognition of her station. He caught a hint of her scent and smiled to himself.

I hope I’m the first man today to tell you how beautiful you are. The rumors of your beauty don’t capture the half of it. My name is Francois Toussaint, Commander of the Nomad’s Dream.

Lord Shingetsu sends his regards. He’s given me a letter for you.
” Francois said, conjuring the letter and offering it to her unless one of her nearby males stopped him.

Madeline had expected something rougher. Unshaped perhaps or at least unsheared in the way of common seafarers. She had braced herself to be assaulted with the scent of a male who had yet to be introduced to soap and water outside of what was used to cleanse his deck. Instead, she was greeted by a male who could grace the salon of any of Chaillot's fashionable residences. Suprise echoed over her expression for a fleeting second before the soft smile and gentle approachability once more took over.

Aching and heartsick from the earlier argument with her consort his compliment struck her as feigned. 'Twice of none is still none' She bitterly reminded herself even as a faint blush stole over her cheeks. Her hands touched to his; fingertips gently to press against his wrist in acknowledgment of his submission by protocol. Polite manners that chained them all into this dance.

"You would presume correctly. A pleasure to meet you at long last Captain Toussaint" On the seas his rank would be higher than hers in effect. He ruled absolutely the territory of his ship. His crew were his court and bound to him in a way she could never expect to hold any males of her own. By naming him Captain she paid homage to his sovereignty even as he had given her own acknowledgment.

"Thank you for conveying his words. I shall strive to have a reply for you to return. Along with a gift for your troubles." Madeline accepted the letter with a simple dignity. Her males attentive and yet only the servant, bearing wine and the array of nibbles typical for such meetings, moved any closer. Not bonded; they guarded her out of duty and contractual obligation. If she lost this war; they would absently mourn the loss of a decent queen but it would not be the soul-shattering event found in a bond.

"Please make yourself comfortable Captain Toussaint. I am afraid we don't stand much on ceremony in these times. " She was careful to keep her injured arm from moving. The effort not to gesture as she spoke almost causing her words to come at a faint stutter  While the lace hid most of the bruise she didn't wish to reveal more of the inner workings of her court than needed.

"Would you care for wine or anything to eat?" Polite manners before the meeting. It was considered rude to go straight to business even as much as Madeline desired to tear into the missive he brought from her contacts on the mainland. No matter how desperately she looked towards setting straight to business on her little problem. Already she was contested by one queen too many in the form of her lovely cousin, but now this Red Jeweled fool had played right into Roux's hand.

Madeline felt the faint chill from her temper and forced it down. Little adjustments of breath and posture to help focus her mind anywhere else but that frustration. Life was much easier when she had been contented to rule her little piece of Chaillot. Easier before a Warlord Prince got ideas in his head that he could rule better than the Queens and their formed Council. Now she had to juggle her duties as well as work through the egos and opinions of various generals, mercenaries, and admirals. All, whom thought the others were absolute lackwits.

"I am certain you have heard the rumors of Dark Haven acquiring a Red Jeweled Queen recently. This unfortunate development leaves my cousin and me in a rather cumbersome pickle" Madeline took a slight sip of her own glass of wine. The rich and full flavor teasing over her tongue. Savored to remember when she took her tea of rose hips and mint with dinner instead of her preferred vintage.

"You see, we do care about the woman's mental stability and understand the purpose Dark Haven has. On the other hand, Prince Roux's usage of some of the Darker Jeweled patients has been a little less..." Madeline paused to search for the proper word. "Orthodox" She wasn't maligning the male; after all her whole Rebellion was slated on the rule of Queens being the rational and just route of things.  Her finger traced along the stem of her glass. Stroking in slow patterns as her thoughts meandered between outrage and wondering just who he gratified to gain such luck with Mother Night.

"I have asked for all our mercenaries to meet with me. That we may come up with a fitting solution for the issue at hand." Madeline wasn't outright suggesting they kidnap an inmate of Dark Haven. That would be morally wrong; utterly shocking.....

No, she was simply thinking of reallocating the Red Queen's presence to another location. A simple redistribution of assets; nothing more than pure economics.

Please, Lady Rousseau, call me Francois. I believe we can still be professional and courteous without standing on every single point of Protocol for the time being.” Francois said, flashing the Queen a smile. Her tone and demeanor felt forced, like she was dressing up for a part she’d rather not play. Francois understood. The two leaders of this Resistance probably had very different goals and ideas of what victory looked like when all was said and done. One look around the room didn’t show a second Queen that he needed to grant fealty to. Was this intentional or was the other woman running late?

Francois took the lady’s suggestion and took off his coat, handing it over to one of the servants so that he could sit down near the Queen.

Lord Shingetsu wishes you both good fortune in the coming times. He’s ventured to Dena Nehele on business for the time being, but I’ll make sure that he gets your response.” Francois said.

A servant appeared and Francois asked for a glass of ice water and a pair of pastries. While good food wasn’t uncommon at sea, a little luxury was always nice to enjoy. He crossed his legs at the knee and sat back, watching Lady Rosseau for a long moment. His gaze, while polite, wasn’t pure of intent. Was he undressing her with his eyes? Possibly. He’d never discuss it.

I am certain you have heard the rumors of Dark Haven acquiring a Red Jeweled Queen recently.

The servant handed him the water glass and he nearly dropped it, so quickly did his attention turn away from his beverage.

Can’t wear that again, it’s meant to be white, not scarlet red like the Jewel of the sailor girl who doesn’t know how to be a Queen.

Francois recovered quickly enough, but now the Queen has his full attention. Alixen’s echoed in his mind and he cursed the Landen woman’s spirits for being so damned prescient. He didn’t know how they worked or where they came from, but now he knew that Dark Haven was a problem that had to be solved before long.

I’ve heard rumours, but nothing more. If such a thing held any weight, it means that this Resistance you’re running is over.” Francois said, taking a sip of his water.

A collared, Red Jeweled Queen at their command? As long as the Dark Haven plays ball--and they probably will--they’ll do the Rites that you and the rest of your allies are withholding. You’d lose support. You could keep fighting the good fight, but the Roux brothers would win, in the end.

You and Lady Moreau would be fortunate if they just break your jewels. They’ve already murdered one Queen for defying them. What’s two more?
” Francois shrugged, taking a bite of his pastry.

Damn, this is good.” he said, unable to hold in his esteem for the food. He chewed, swallowed, and considered the options.

You could kill the Red Queen. But if that has any chance of being your plan, let me know and I’ll quit now. I’m not here to murder Queens or deal with anyone who does.” Francois said.

You could bargain with the Dark Haven for her release, but...I don’t think you can outbid the Territory Court for their favor. Money is what they want. ” Francois said.

In my opinion, your options are these. Find someone or something the Dark Haven wants more and arrange a trade. Arrange to kidnap the girl, if you have someone inside Dark Haven.

Or, you find someone capable of killing Etienne and Chapel Roux.
” Francois said coldly. His eyes might as well have been chips of eyes for all the warmth they held just then. Alixen would kill him where he stood if she heard what he’d just suggested. He was putting her life at risk even suggesting the idea. An assassin wouldn’t discriminate.

And yet, it was the only way to get Chaillot back on track.

Your advisers might have other ideas. Those are just mine.

"I have no doubt Dark Haven will lend the Territory Court aide. It is where their funding flows and all things revolve around gold" Her brow raised slightly at his fumble. Good breeding kept her tongue stilled even as she motioned to a servant to bring him a cloth to blot the liquid from his clothing.

"The situation is well understood, Francois. While I do enjoy my head attached still to my neck; I knew the penalty for failure when I started this." The steadiness of her tone belayed the terror that had her heart thundering beneath the stately fall of her clothing.

"My cousin insists on keeping at least a proper cook. I shall convey your compliments" Steady and unflappable she kept the half smile upon her lips. At least until he spoke of murder. The smile faded and those brown eyes hardened. Murder a Sister Queen?

She may be willing to withhold some of the Queen's duties in efforts to keep the civil war from destroying the land but she would never condone breaking or killing one of her sisters. Then he spoke his own condemnation and she let the tension and anger go; felt the males guarding her release their tension. Not bonded males, but they would honor their contracts. Instinct alone would not allow for less.

"There will be no killing of Queens. That would make us no better than Roux and his coterie." Madeline felt the need to insert that assurance into his tirade. Accustomed to Gervais manner of speaking she easily kept silent as he spelled out the various options. At least he was polite and didn't throw in cutting remarks; then again he didn't have the assurance of a signed contract and private room.

"The last option appeals to me most dearly; however, they have been borrowing personal guard from Dark Haven. It makes approaching them most tricky. While a Sister of the Hourglass may have some opportunity he seems to foresee any sort of attempt." The last option was her favored and in truth one she would have picked before plunging Chaillot into this rat's nest of problems.

"The most viable is to assist her in escaping. It will require multiple crews Captain. One to help with the escape and another to infiltrate. A risky proposition and one that will come dear. Unfortunately, it seems the only true option." She resisted the pastries. The earlier jab made by her Consort ringing in her ears. Instead, another sip of the wine was used to keep herself busy.

"I have kept this bit of knowledge from them. Odds are against us enough; for them to know this. Well, my armies would soon flutter into the darkness and we would be left holding the cards" Pragmatic. Josette would have been flirting and working to earn the handsome Captain's affections. Madeline didn't. She didn't play coy or even consider that his gaze was more than polite.

Her cup was placed on the small table near her chair. Hands folded in her lap; plucking the lace to fall neatly over the backs. Wrists firmly hidden beneath the long sleeves. All she could do was pray that Gervais honored her command and stayed away with his many lovers. A shame on its own, that she could not keep him to herself, but a lesser one than his true thoughts of the Queen he served.

"Is this something you can help me arrange? There are many places equipped to help settle a disturbed sister. Many places away from Chaillot until the land is once more healed and Dark Haven can offer her the solace she needs"

"Do this, Do that, Wear this.. No wear that.." he muttered under his damned breath.  Sometimes he had to remind his crew that he was the Captain here and not them.  "We are so going to get reaved out of all this.. I just know it." He gave a bit of a fret as he adjusted the long coat once more as his foot steps took him to the more than likely waiting Queen that he had the unfortunate circumstance to have his entire crew push him towards. Well, money was money after all, and he could understand that mighty pressin need to eat once in a while.

They had just finished a job, while it paid good, it didn't ever settle them into a position where they had some minor breathing space.  Now when a Queen was looking at getting a job done no matter the job it was likely to earn a fair bit of coin.  And there he was, heading up to her manner and delving into business that was fair likely to be way over his simple person.

Clearly he was going about this in an up-the-down-side manner, though he managed to find the way towards the door before he was stopped.  Fingers scratched along his scalp as he was questioned and with a few choice words the doors were opened as he stepped into the audiance chamber. Sure they weren't alone, there was another fellow around and he was dressed mighty shiny. Gotta scope out the competition first off before his eyes flickered towards the woman.

Something snapped in his head and as such a single word was uttered from his lips as his head fell into his palms, "Damn." A little shake of his head as he felt the draw towards her, "Oh this is just shiny." he bit off with a sarcastic snark in his voice, "I am never going to let them forget about shoving me into this situation." He talked to himself before his attention gazed between the two, "Ah, Lady Rousseau!  A pleasure really, I am Lucian.  I do the odd job here and there... Some legal, others quite possibly not.  Business is business after all and I hear you are looking for something to be collected?"

Francois remained silent as Madeline explained that the Rouxs seemed to foresee any attempt to kill Etienne. He knew the method of Etienne’s defense, the most potent one, and the conflict ate a hole in his gut. Alixen would defend her “wolf” with her strange powers for as long as her spirits demanded it of her. The legion of Dark Jeweled guards he kept between himself and his assailants was a secondary issue. So long as Etienne could prepare for any attack in advance, taking him out would never succeed.

You won’t be able to take down Etienne Roux without a lot more preparation. Quite simply, you don’t have the resources.” Francois said, sipping his water. Perhaps this Resistance was doomed to fail. The moment that the Rouxs got that Red Jeweled Queen doing any kind of work, they could simply wait for Lady Rosseau’s support to evaporate.

He finished eating his pastries, thinking over the situation at hand.

The Dark Haven has enough trained Black Widows to get wind of attempted kidnappings of their patients long before they happen, Lady Rosseau. Not to mention that the location of Dark Haven is said to be in the mountains. Taking the Red Queen by force is a losing prospect, especially if they’ve convinced her that she’s safe there for her own good.” Francois said.

Unless you have something that the leaders of Dark Haven want in trade, you’re best leaving that Queen there. The only benefit you have where she’s concern is that most people believe the same thing as you do: that she’s too unstable to be controlled in the long run.” Francois said.

If you could capture the Red Queen, there are several places she could be taken until this war is over. If you can convince her that she can trust you, that would go a long way toward bringing her to your side.” Francois said.

I think the way forward lies in damaging the leadership of your opposition. If taking down Etienne Roux isn’t an option now...then we need to have his people do it for us.” Francois said.

I'll be visiting Dark Haven during my time here. I'll see what else I can learn.” he said.

Madeline listened over his speech. She knew they had Black Widows trained to watch; but she also knew that conflicting paths often left confusing counter visions. Two attacks designed for the same time; two different entries would have them guarding for that. A third however- that one to slide in the gap that would be left in the visions. One that would linger like a faint shadow. That had the ability to escape the foresight.

Thoughts she kept to herself for the moment. Madeline knew the risks and also knew that no amount of bribery would get either of the thrice damned leaders to release one of their patients before they thought it time. Unless...

"You are visiting Dark Haven yes?" Something was turning in that pretty little head of hers. Something almost devious and yet so sweetly pure. Madeline was a good queen. A solid one with a good track record before her Rebellion. A Rebellion she could easily point out as being staged to protect other good queens from the abuse of an unstable male stealing the throne of Chaillot under duress. That alone was the reason why she and Josette had proposed that they would abide by the traditional Council of Queens nominating and accepting which ruled after all was said and done. To restore order and tradition.

Her hand lifted and she waved a servant over with a silent command to bring her stationary and utensils on the portable writing tray. The pretty dark purple wood sourced from Shalador's tropical forests; native only to such places and finely crafted and carved into intricate whorls. Beautiful and delicate; yet functional. She had liked the piece no matter that Gervais had labeled it too masculine for a Queen. More so a Queen who already dominated with the force of her gravitational pull.

"This Queen... I have not heard of her, nor have any of my sisters in the Rebellion. If she is a native; then she is untrained. Dangerous to herself and others. More importantly useless to Chaillot's healing." Madeline finally expressed. The pen set to the paper elegantly writing out a simple script. A polite letter to Lady Lenore Noir. She had some familiarity with the woman; after all Madeline's own grandmother had been a patient under her tender care. Her grandmother, a Green Jeweled Queen, had been in and out of Lenore's care for decades. While it had helped still the old woman's temper the stays did little to lessen the sharper tongue.

Lady Noir,

I hope this letter greets you in good health and good fortunes.

My family is greatly in your debt for the years of service and assistance you have provided towards my Grandmother, Lady Eleanor Rousseau, in your compassionate care and treatment provided in assisting her to remain a productive Queen during her ruling years.

Lady Josette Moreau and myself would like to repay that debt. Word has come to us that you have a Dark Jeweled Queen with little expertise in her craft. Being intimately familiar with Dark Haven and dark jeweled queens I would send an invitation for your newest patient and whomever you would have as escort to my manor where Lady Moreau and myself would be happy to provide training.

As we have stated in previous correspondence the aim of the Rebellion is to see Dark Haven free of court politics once more and no longer jeopardizing the stability of patients by committing them to acts of violence. This offer is made in the most sincere wishes to see your patient on the road to mending and a productive life serving Chaillot

Yours in Service,
Lady Madeline Rosseau

A brisk manner had her sealing the envelope before the new figure appeared. A startled jolt that caused her to smear the wax even as she was pressing her seal into it. No matter. Her lips compressed into a line. How had he gotten past her Butle...Oh that was right. She had ordered the mercenaries be admitted to this meeting as she would need all sorts. Perfect.

A little smile touched her lips in welcome even as she settled the little tray to one side. His entrance and words were rougher than the court polished Captain Francios. An appraising eye raked over the male; weighing him even as she kept her polite and polished demeanor in place.

If either male wondered why the two guards didn't do more than take a step closer; well that was for them to ponder. Madeline cared for her court. Bound by contract or not - they were ordered to protect only to the letter of their contracts. Everything was designed that should she lose they would be held harmless; treason was not applicable to males serving at a Queen's exact orders.

"Indeed.. a pleasure Prince Lucian" She uttered, a quizzical note at the end of her sentence. Lucian was an odd last name unless he completely ignored protocol to offer only his first name. What an odd friendly sort for a warlord prince. Madeline knew the psychic signature. The bite and taste in the air that shimmered and trembled a the promise of violence of passion. Both things she eschewed. Already she struggled to control a Prince as an escort and lover. Warlord Princes were just too much.

He had heard that did he? Who in her household had such a big... Gervais. Of course he would be yammering away. Her mouth lined once more with anger. If she didn't need him and those connections she would have trussed him up and thrown him on the first ship to worst of slaving country. Stupid bastard. Her fingertips rose to press against her temple as the composed queen let that first crack appear. The dark smudge of bruise barely visible above the cuff of her gown as the lace fell back and sleeve slipped to accommodate the motion.

"You heard correctly. Prince Lucian, please meet one of our more prominent importers,Captain Toussaint" Manners. She grasped to them even as she tried to make sense of the mercenary's words. Her head ached and heart sank. Madeline really didn't want to end up some sort of red mess on the floor. She enjoyed living. Wanted to live long enough to dismiss Gervais and laugh as his social connections still looked to her as Territory Queen. Really, she had goals and her Consort was becoming a large liability.

"Captain Toussaint, I would like to hear your recommendations later.. Of how to exactly turn followers into allies. Prince; yes I have a few packages that need moved. Supplies mainly; but something living perhaps later." Multi tasking at it's finest. Her mind was already working over various punishments for her consort while working to settle both males on their course.

The letter she had scripted and sealed was floated over to Francios. Lady Lenore Noir's name emblazoned on the outside in her flourished script. The letter from Lord Shingetsu was opened. Ready to be read and replied. She would be patient as she waited for both males to reply to her words. Then she would start organizing matters. No matter that Josette was away indulging in some aggressive and intense 'negotiations' with a Prince controlling a pivotal seaport.

He knew he was forgetting something, politics or some such and yet he was a simple mercenary, born poor and decided to do something about that, not that he had made it rich so to speak yet but given time no doubt he would find himself his own special place out there in the world.  A brow raised as the greetings were returned, ah yes.. That was the issue, he gave first name not last.  Oh well, the deed was done and likely no coming back from that, yet the courtly business was lost on him.  Simple is as simple does in that respect.

Any sort of mercenary worth his salt had an eye for detail and the ability to improvise.  Both of those were take into account in the little meeting that was taking place before his gaze turned to the other male.  Yes, there would be time for other things and no doubt with a big job others would be biting at the bit so to speak for a chance at the reward.  Though something about the whole situation gave him a poor queer feeling. Something was not going to go right, or even in his favor no doubt.  Not to say most things did not go in his favor...

"Packages are easy, though I dare say something livin' generally is a bit more difficult to handle.  That being if said living package needs to make it to where ever you want it in one piece, though if they are complaint that generally makes things a might be easier to rangle." He offered as she stretched out the smattering of jobs that were needing done.  Him and his crew no doubt could handle simple packages so to speak, and the living thing was probably going to be a bit more difficult but in that respect the pay would be bigger? Possibly?

He turned to the Captain, he was a regal sort, no doubt did business with big fish and the like.  Though it was not something he was ever comfortable working with.  While the pay was good, the headache was even bigger in most cases.  Not to mention that it didn't bode well to have too many eyes on you when you had a habit of taking jobs that weren't exactly legal.  In what ever definition of the word you used.  "Glad to make your acquaintance, Captain." he offered a hand out to shake.  "No doubt you and I will end up working together to see this all though no?"

Madeline covertly read the letter sent by Lord Shingetsu. It was a straightforward enough letter; seemingly to wish her good health and fortune. The subtle wording implied his intentions that she quickly and take the territory seat as he expected her victory. A victory she was fully committed to exacting as the Roux brothers had no qualms about removing obstacles; even if they were Queens.

Polite manners kept her from drafting a new letter as the Warlord Prince went through his hasty speech. The inflections of his tones told her enough about his upbringing. A male from one of the poorer districts; hard working at least and honest about his intentions. Something else that nagged at the back of her mind and she pushed away in ruthless effort to focus on the tasks ahead.

" Well the living thing that I may need assistance with will be a willing package, Prince. For now, I do need to see supplies moved from Captain Toussaint's ships to the interior of my holdings." Madeline managed to look collected and calm no matter her worry over the reception her letter would have at Dark Haven. How deeply were they in Roux's pocket? That thrice damned red queen.

"Would you care for anything to drink Prince?" She refused to call him by his first name once more. It wasn't done. Really it went against all proper manners and in a way riled her. So, she simply addressed him as Prince. Her mind worked through loops and loops; switching topics smoothly enough to confuse those not paying attention or simply too dull to follow her chain of thoughts.

" Also, Prince. I would request that you take a few reports of troop movements. Help me see what is on the ground as well as what it would take to move across Chaillot" Madeline had every intention of moving to her forward front. She was needed there more than she was needed in the center of the Rebel occupied territories. Snuggled down in the safety of Queen held Chaillot; it wasn't right to ask others to put themselves at risk when she couldn't deprive herself of the comforts of home.

No sooner than she had finished speaking. Her thoughts collected neatly than her Consort waltzed in. His gaze roamed over Lucien and Francious without a betraying flick of emotion. No sense of wonder or even annoyance that she met with others without his presence. Instead, he smoothly strode forward to take her hand.

Few would notice the tensing of the Queen. Of her stiffness in accepting his lips that touched to the back of her hand; or the slight narrowing of her eyes as his fingers pressed just a touch too firmly on the underside of her wrist. Actions he took to remind her of exactly who really was in power. Little things that to the casual observer was simply an attentive Consort greeting his lady.

"Lady, you did not tell me you would be taking meetings today. Else, I would have been here promptly." Silky smooth Gervais released her hand to face the room. His motions brought him to stand behind the right arm of her chair. Looming instead of guarding to Madeline's thoughts.

Obviously, he had no plans to leave the room after rudely entering. Determined to weather this with the same aplomb she did most things Madeline turned to the two males. Francois at least knew of her consort; with Gervais's family connections being the way she had met Lord Shingetsu.

"Please forgive my Consort's breach in manners. Captain Toussaint, Prince Lucian, this is Prince Lamont my consort." Silky smooth that voice held anything but a woman's warmth for the man contracted to warm her bed. Her hand freed of Gervais' grip once more found itself in her lap.

Madeline tipped her head slightly to look up at Gervais. Her smile more feral than a greeting. That look that warned of an argument later even as she tried for polite manners. One did not air their laundry before guests. His gaze met hers in a sort of droll staring match before she turned away to instead reach for her writing desk.

"As I was saying, depending on Lady Noir's reception of my letter, I may need to see a living package moved across Chaillot... Mainly myself. As you stated Captain, if they get their talons into this unknown Queen our little movement here is done and over." Calmly she wrote her reply to Lord Shingetsu's letter. Her tone remained to the same even calm that one would take when discussing the weather; rather than becoming a messy stain on a parlor floor.

Gervais' hand tightened slightly on her shoulder not that she would show a reaction. Only the slight wrinkling of her gown gave hint at the pressure. Madeline knew she would hear about his discontent later; in private. For now, she could ignore him and the discomfort of his grip; even as she wanted to scream at him once more.

Now to wait for the two men, whose opinion's she would value, to weigh in on her thoughts...

Francois noted Prince Toujours had and shook it, a quick and cold grasp devoid of anything since the most professional respect. Francois didn’t dislike the man. He’d heard that Lucian Toujours had a reputation for getting his jobs done with skill and alacrity. He did have a problem with being in the same room with him and the Queen. Francois held a healthy paranoia about what Etienne and Chapel Roux knew about the Resistance. Despite the capital’s location in the northernmost Province of Cotaine, Francois knew that Black Widows could find them nearly anywhere. Not to mention Alixen’s arts, which Francois didn’t understand in the slightest. He was still troubled by the revelation about the Red Queen being true.

Good to meet you, Prince Toujours. Yes, it seems that we’re working together for the foreseeable future. My employer hopes for the continued success of the Queens.” Francois said, watching the other man for a moment. His attention then returned to Madeline, who was now reading Lord Shingetsu’s letter. When she looked up again, she’d find Francois watching her as if trying to determine something.

We should learn if Roux and his people have brought in any mercenaries of their own. It would be good to know who our competition is. And even if you just get the Dark Haven to remain out of the fighting, you’d be denying the Rox brothers an army of Dark Jewels to conscript to their bidding.” Francois said.

The door opened and Francois narrowed his eyes as Prince Lamont entered the room. He’d met the Prince once, on behalf of Lord Shingetsu, and Francois had disliked him immediately. He had a face that deserved to be punched until it shattered, until it was nothing more than a bloody ruin. His smile was fake, oily, and the man looked like someone who spoke out of both sides of his mouth. Francois noted the tension between the pair, though to the untrained eye, it would look like they were the dashing, dapper couple looking out for Chaillot’s future. If Lady Rosseau became Queen, this mealy-mouthed fuck would rule at her side. Francois didn’t know the particulars of their relationship, but he knew one indisputable fact with a mere glance between the pair.

Gervais Lamont was not fucking his Queen properly.

I’d be happy to go over that information in great detail at your leisure, Lady Rosseau. Tell me when and where and I’ll make the time.” Francois said.

Francois inclined his head to Prince Lamont, though he did not bow as he could have.

One thing, Lady Rosseau. I would be very careful about how and when you move about the island. Your safety, and that of Lady Moreau, is paramount. No doubt that the Loyalists would kill you both to end this, especially if they can get their hands on this Red Queen.” Francois said.

What other factions can you count on to support you? Where do the Landen stand in all of this?” he asked.

Josette had not arrived late because she lacked manners so much as she assumed Maddie had let it slip her mind until the last minute to notify her that she was meeting with others around their little red Queen issues. By the time Josette swept into the room looking effortless and pretending to be out of breath, the meeting was in full swing.

"Do forgive my being tardy. It would appear messages are not getting to me as quickly as they once were. I am sure it was a minor oversight of course. We have not had the pleasure to meet. I am Lady Josette Moreau. Such a pleasure it is to meet you all" she offered with just the brightest smile in the face of adversity. Her eyes floated to Prince Lamont who only got a smile because of the company they were surrounded with. If it had just been her and Maddie she might have taken the moment to regale her darling cousin with a little story from earlier when she had met with some little snot nose district Queen but that could wait.

It was good that Maddie had found a few mercenaries that might help them get this little red Queen. Josette had a few ideas but they were not for polite company's ears or really any company for that matter until she had spoken to Madeline. It wasn't everyday you considered smuggling someone out in a body bag dead or not. That pesky collar though was the hitch to her plan so perhaps Maddie would have some ideas around it. Knowing her cousin, Madeline would just scoff at her idea but then again maybe Madeline would be less heartbroken at Granny's sudden demise than she thought.....

"I hope I have not missed much..." Josette offered wistfully.

A brow raised, singular, one in which dipected uncertainty or simply the act of intregue at anothers actions.  Namely the so called Consort. While he was a simple man he felt the stiring of the Warlord Prince in him to lash out at the filth.  Though clearly that wouldn't be the most benefit to him or his crew.  They needed money, she was offering it.  Killing her Consort, or at the very least seriously maiming him would likely make that situation a little less tenable.

Regardless, nature was nature.  In of himself that breeze around him simply calmed, cooled, not exactly frigid but had attention been paid towards him and his gaze there was simply something screaming at him to strike, to lash out, to kill and maim and while on the battle field he revaled in that particular descent and heady intoxicate of his caste here he was forced to draw control, to lash and leash that demand of his caste before he turned towards the Captain.

He had been ready to return the greeting in kind before the Consort decided to show his face and the Warlord Prince simply turned towards Francois.  There was some envy there, he wanted a ship for himself, it was something that his crew were fighting and working towards.  "Captain Toussaint." He offered simply, though his attention twisted off the excuse of a Consort as he eyed the Captain a moment, "Something tells me we have met before?  That or you look oddly familiar.." He couldn't quite place it but there was a feeling in the back of his head that perhaps they had met before though when was quite beyond his recall at that moment

Attention twisted back to the Queen, though he had never smuggled a Queen before he felt it was perfectly within his ability and quite possibly easy enough money.  Even more so that she was a willing smuggled good, the difficulty rose was when what you were smuggling was alive and unwilling.  All sorts of problems could be happening from that rather problematic quest.  "I'm sure me and my boys could get you anywhere you need to be here in Chaillot, Lady.  We might not seem like bunch but it's a might bit easier to blend into the masses when you dress and act like common folk.  Though we never think we are anything more than common." A little smile was offered in her direction though the urge to trim his nails with a too large of a blade to be called a knife was certainly tingling along the front of his mind.

The entrance of the second Queen however had a brow raised once more. While he was sure he had been told about the two Queens working together, it was quite possible it had just slipped his mind.  A slight little bow was offered in her direction as the Warlord Prince offered greetings.

" Dark Haven follows the territory funding. It is an unwritten contractual obligation. Prince Roux changed the rules of admission from voluntary to compulsatory upon seizing the territory seat" Madeline seethed over that. A male actually lashing out at a Queen and slaughtering her; even a Queen as old and corrupt as the leader of Cotaine had been. That he had been able to slay a Queen spoke volumes of his own instability.

"My schedule is a bit disorganized. I have time though next evening. I will have my steward forward on the invitation" Mannerly despite Gervais touch and the hints of his displeasure. As if he needed to worry about the handsome Captain showing any interest in her plump self. If the meeting was not so important a matter Madeline would have rolled her eyes at her consort behaving much like a surly dog in a manger.

" My goal is to be as careful as possible Captain. I have no intentions of making this battle easier for the Roux encampment." It didn't need saying that Madeline was also not keen on her death being found in this war. She intended to live a long life; preferably as Chaillot's Territory Queen.

If Gervais showing up had not been enough to throw off her mood then Josette's arrival would be the finishing piece. The other Queen's appearance put a damper on her own presence. While Madeline was cool and composed there was something restrained about her that the vibrant Josette radiated. Internally something shifted between the two queens. Madeline let herself fade backward.

" Lady Moreau, thank you for joining us. Indeed, the courier must have gotten caught up in something" Her tone was droll. Caught up in another's thighs no doubt. Gervais should have at least seen the invitation turned out to Josette, but it seemed even that much of an official duty was too much.

He was lucky that his family's connections and gold were such strong currency. It brought him a place in her first circle and kept him there. No matter how much she started to despise him and the match that was forced upon her by necessity. She could feel the hostility coming from the Mercenary Warlord Prince and the change in the air was enough to set her on edge.

She would have equated it with the same sensation of being a long-tailed cat snaking through a rocking chair workshop. The sensation of being constantly aware of each step and movement to avoid setting off what could be a detrimental chain of reactions. Just a moment though then it passed as Lucien started to speak.

"Of that, I have no doubt. Your crew has been most efficient in past endeavors. As of right now, the packages I need taken will venture into landen areas. Food and basic goods need to be brought to those furthest inland. We hold the lower half of the Reines District; with several landen claimed settlements within" Madeline paused in her briefing to allow Josette to contribute. Her cousin would be peeved if Madeline held the entire audience and didn't grant her the courtesy that was due.

" My cousin, Lady Morreau, can go over the details of the relief shipments. As this will be a coordinated effort between our privateers and land-based mercenaries" With that Madeline let Josette have the meeting.

Josette could have rolled her eyes at the lame response she got from Madeline but the truth was that it would not do any good to show a division between them. She did not interrupt her cousin even though she was growing irritated that Madeline had everyone's attention but rather looked totally engaged with each thing that Madeline spoke of.

When Maddie finally turned the conversation over to Josette, it was a relief. "Thank you Lady Rousseau" she said with a gentle kindness. Turning herself to fully face her audience Josette spoke of the efforts they were making in terms of relief. "Lady Rousseau and I recognize the strain this discord between everyone is causing. People are going without basic needs and Queens are not blessing the lands in protest for what has happened under Prince Roux. It is our intention to begin moving imported food stuffs to areas most impacted. This is only the start though. We plan to make sure emissaries from myself and my dear cousin are delivering those desperately needed items. A show of goodwill and the opportunity Chaillot has to flourish with my cousin and myself at the helm."

Josette always made sure to speak of their team effort because right now she could no more afford to lose Madeline than Madeline could afford to lose her. "We, ourselves, are willing to pass through what few luxuries we might have left to those who are suffering so. I have been fortunate enough to begin to build strong relationships with a few of the districts who might aid us as we attempt to aid those who need it most." Josette conveniently left out those emissaries were spies who were meant to help flip villages and districts fully under their banner. You'd be surprised how far some cheese and soap goes these days. Not to mention all the other deals Josette had conveniently struck along the way.

"Of course we are in need of your assistance in order to see this successful..." Josette was attempting to turn up her charm to full blast in order to make things happen.

Lady Moreau entered the meeting room and Francois’s eyes narrowed some as he looked between the two Queens. He didn’t believe for a moment that this was a simple matter of miscommunication or tardiness. The Queens didn’t look comfortable with each other. Lady Rosseau appeared ill at ease every since Prince Lamont entered the room. Prince Toujours seemed to be the only other person in the room who’d picked up on the tension, but said nothing while the connections between the three unfurled themselves.

Two Queens couldn’t rule Chaillot when the dust settled. One of these women would have to step aside and let the other rule in earnest, or make way for a better, more powerful Queen to do so. If they did not, the Rouxs would win and Chaillot would continue to die as the Queens withheld their gift and damaged the land.

Francois bowed to Lady Moreau and regarded her coolly, his smile not reaching his eyes.

I was just explaining to Lady Rosseau that, perhaps, it’s time that the two of you considered actually bringing this war to a close rather than waiting for Rouxs to deal. They won’t. They think they’re in the right. They’ll let the land suffer long enough for the people to turn against you. Then they’ll use the Red Queen hidden in Dark Haven to do what you’re not doing, and draw people back to their side. Once the Landen and the smallfolk turn against you, it won’t matter who they’ve killed or what they’ve done. You’re finished.” Francois said, taking a step forward so that he could draw the attention of the people in the room  toward him and away from their own petty thoughts and squabbles.

The Rouxs must be dealt with, quickly and finally. If they won’t sit down and negotiate terms, and they won’t, then you need to assassinate them and bring this conflict to a close. You’ve got to get the Queens feeding the land again before things become too far gone.” Francois said, looking between Madeline and Josephine. He might be offending them, but he didn’t give a damn. Francois wanted this war to end and he wanted Alixen to be free of the Roux brothers. If he could get these two Queens to put their efforts toward that end, then he wouldn’t lose sleep over it if one of them got themselves killed.

That, Lady Moreau, was the crux of my argument. Decisive action is needed to end this matter and the two of you can take it as soon as possible. Hire the Guilds of Dena Nehele or find someone who can help you here.” Francois said.

Whatever you plan to do, do it soon, or they’ll do it to you.

Clearly charm and draping herself attractively was not going to be the way to win this crowd over so she straightened up. Perhaps the sweetness of life was better left to Madeline and so Josette smiled a smile that was less that sweet and beautiful and more a woman who had less issue with killing people. "To your point around action, that is why you are here is it not? Sometimes the best attacks in life are not the most blatant."

Neither of them was unaware that if they did not strike first and hard that this would end in their favor. That Red Queen was something they needed and the fact the Rouxs had her was disturbing to Josette more than anything else. That was a power they could little afford to leave in enemy hands. "The question is whether either of you are willing to assist in our endeavor.
Certainly the outcome of my cousin and I taking back Chaillot is a positive one for all. Queens would be willing to serve and feed the land, restoring Chaillot to its former beauty. However we need help ensuring our enemies cannot use their resources against us."

She looked at Madeline. "Perhaps dearest cousin, you might like to chime in further? I think maybe your more tactical way of explaining things might help persuade these gentlemen further to our cause." Josette would give Madeline the floor back but she wasn't leaving this conversation until things were settled. No delays or being put off so that Madeline could easily push her out of the way and make the council see her as best suited for the job

Madeline barely managed to keep from glaring at Josette in passing the conversation back over to her. The need for her to organize and command was part of how the two queens worked. Madeline was focused on the details, on information, and on tactics. The pure intellectual side that relied on facts and figures. Josette was the finesse for their operation. The charmer whose composure was so cool butter would never melt in her mouth. Stately and gracious they had played off each other's strengths and weaknesses in starting the alliance of Southern Queens for the Rebellion and were now needing to pull them together.

"We need to get the Landen council on board with Queen's controlling again. Lady Moreau is the stronger diplomat and will need to avail herself of your smuggling skills and knowledge of the coast to set up a meeting with key members of council. Rather frankly, the Landens outnumber us easily five to one. We will need their support." Madeline sighed and moved to the map with its little figurines. Her fleets were noted and the outgunned nature of them meant she would have to hire clever Captains who could do more with their lighter and faster ships in taking out the opposing blockades; more importantly would have to work on reopening shipping lanes for the most southern of their districts.

" My self and my consort will need to slip into dark haven and out. Which is where Prince Toujours and his crew come in. The idea is to hire on with your ship Captain Toussaint at the same time Lady Moreau is meeting with the Landen council we will make our visit into Dark Haven to secure the Red Queen's alliance or at least compliance." Madeline hated the idea of dealing with one of the unstable dark jeweled and treating with them like they were civilized. No doubt the woman was raving if Dark Haven had taken the time to collect her personally.

"While we are working on courting our own causes both masters of the guard and stewards will be looking at some quieter removals of the Roux government into the unsecured areas. Our goal is to complete this without a full out blood war. No one wishes that Gentlemen; more so no one of us Queens wishes to see our lands destroyed under the sort of war that we wage. We are fairly certain the Landen are also loathe to see that sort of ruin occur." The pieces were placed even as she sent a subtle thread on the distaff path to her cousin.

~Sorry.. I cannot trust Gervais not to get in trouble if we leave him behind. Thankfully it should be a short trip ~ Madeline hated inflicting her politically chosen consort on anyone; much less her temperamental cousin who may just try to send the male out for a seafood dinner; fresh on the ocean floor.

The longer Francois watched the exchange between the two Queens, the more he was convinced that one of them simply wasn’t necessary. They had a few solid ideas between them, but it was clear just from their small exchanges here that they were vying with each other to rule when this was all said and done. Francois did not see the loser of their little contest going quietly into the night and accepting a Province or a District as consolation for their efforts. But it wasn't his job to worry about any of that.

In terms of rulers, the Landen will fall in line. The important thing is to enact your plans before the Rouxs and their supporters put theirs into motion.” Francois said. He said, directing his attention briefly to Lady Moreau. Francois understood her desire to meet with the Landen and gather their support. It was a good move, if she was trying to secure their support. Letting her cousin go to Dark Haven, thereby taking the mission less likely to be successful.

He thought they were being naive at the prospect of a bloodless takeover. They were dealing with a Warlord Prince, after all, and one who had no compunction against murdering Queens in the first place. Francois knew that there was only one way to deal with that kind of a man, but it seemed that everyone else would learn through hard experience.

I stand ready to assist as necessary, Lady Rosseau. Dark Haven is high in the mountains, though, with its own defenses. Once you get there, you might want to have money available to get their attention.” he said, looking back to the woman that had called them here.
