I'm begging you to keep on haunting me

Patience was not one of Alixen's strengths, especially when it came to waiting for Noose. Waiting was boring. And being bored was a sign of a lack of creativity. Waiting inside had her quite literally trying to climb the walls, stacking furniture in strange configurations until she could make it from the living room through the kitchen and into the bedroom without ever touching the floor. Lix held a rambling conversation with her spirits as she played. Playing was much better than waiting.

Noose had signaled early. Alixen had been thrilled. She wasn't even out of nightmare weed yet and already she got to see him. Maybe he missed her. It would make sense if he missed her. She missed him.

When she grew tired of the  stay off the floor game, she abandoned the safe house for the call of the ocean outside. Noose would tell her that she should have stayed inside but if he wanted her to stay inside, he should have been here when she arrived. There was nothing to do inside. Outside there was an entire ocean. Leaving her heeled boots at the back door, she made her way down the beach leaving a trail of clothing in her wake, before plunging into the cold waters wearing only a light colored shift.

It would be these pieces of her that Noose found when he arrived: precariously stacked furniture, colorful bits of cloth with crabs crawling across them, a random stocking tangled in driftwood, and boots with heels far too high to be sensible. What did a seagull care about sensible shoes, anyway? He  had named her. If he didn't like it he should have taken more care when he chose her name.

Names had power. His name was Noose. He left bruises around the pale skin of her throat. And one day, whether he intended it or not, he would be the death of her. Lix had made peace with that fact long along. But she didn't bother to tell him that. It would only worry him. No need to worry about things that couldn't be changed.

Diving beneath the waves, she popped her head up, laughing, before doing it again, like a dark haired seal frolicking. Alixen wondered if there were seals here. She hadn't seen any but that didn't mean they didn't exist. She would ask Noose whenever he bothered to finally arrive.

The blockades were getting harder to run.

Francois heard rumors that Etienne Roux had hired on new privateers to help him. The best (or worst) among them was a Red Jeweled Eyrien known from capturing ships and leaving the crews at sea. The Resistance had yet to strike a lasting, decisive blow against Etienne Roux and his regime. Every time Francois returned to Chaillot, the land looked sicker. Francois wasn’t a Queen, so he couldn’t know, but he thought he felt Chaillot dying just a little more every time he came here. He’d never been more convinced that killing Etienne Roux was the right thing to do.

Or maybe he just wanted blood because nothing  in his life was moving according to plan.

Bad news from Raej had forced him to set sail later than he wanted. Combined with the ship that had chased the Nomad’s Dream for the better part of a day, Francois was sweating by the time they’d lost said ship and made ready to deliver their goods to the island. Josephine and his First Mate had both cornered him as soon as they’d made it to the safety of the cove. They couldn’t afford another brush like that. If they got boarded, Chaillot’s navy had privateers to back them up. The Nomad’s Dream had no one. Francois hadn’t wanted to hear it, but he taking care of his crew was his foremost priority.

Maybe that was why he’d doubled the stock of the Nightmare Weed this time around.

Reaching the safe house took longer than he liked, as he had to avoid guardsmen and people who could be looking for him. You shouldn’t be here, a voice in his head whispered. He should have been somewhere else, anywhere else but here. The world was a wide place. He didn’t have to come back to Chaillot. Let the war continue until the land turned to dust or the people rose up and drove the Roux family out of power. He could make money shipping goods from Raej, Dena Nehele, or anywhere else. He could explore Tacea, now that that island had reappeared. There was no much to do with the rest of his life, yet Francois kept coming back to this little house on the beach to find a woman that he couldn’t get out of his mind.

His Seagull would ruin him, in the end. They both knew it, yet neither was strong enough to accept it.

When he arrived at the safe house, Francois was amused, but not wholly surprised, at the stacking of the furniture. Seagull couldn’t fly, not truly, but it was hard to keep her on the ground if she didn’t want to be there.

Seagull? It’s me.” Francois called out, letting her hear his voice in case she worried that she’d been found out. No answer. He searched the house until a window in one one of the bedrooms that faced the ocean showed him his Seagull in nearly all of her glory. She was in the water, enjoying life as only she could. Francois smiled and watched her briefly. She would understand it all, in the end. She would pout. She would cry, maybe even beg him to stay. He would tell her no, on account of the fee he paid and the loyalty he owed. But what about her? Are you loyal to her?

Francois followed the trail of discarded clothing down to the beach, collecting it as he went. He shook the crabs off of the things they’d accumulated upon and folded them up neatly. When that was complete, he stood at the water’s edge and watched her play in the water. He could watch her smile brighten the world around her for a thousand years, if she allowed it.

Seagull, how’s the water? “ he called out. He waved when she looked his way.

Alixen was limitless. Her mind could encompass the entire ocean. The spirits slid over her skin as smoothly as the salt water did, bathing her in their attention and leaving their marks across her soul. There was no life that Alixen knew without them. They were as essential to who she was as the call of the ocean or her shocking blue eyes.

Keeping Lix out of water was not a thing any mortal man could accomplish. Scrambling up the decks of ships when she was little, following her brother everywhere, more often than not she would come home drenched, dripping puddles of salt water all over her mother's clean floors. Her brother was still out there somewhere, lost to the sea. She knew he wasn't dead. The spirits would tell her if he was.

Breaking the surface of the water, she caught sight of him on the shore. "Noose!" she called back laughing. Alixen spun in the water before plummeting down beneath the waves. Her hair billowed out around her like a dark halo. She pushed herself forward and let the waves crash her against the shore. She rose up on her knees, her white shift clinging to her lithe body. She seemed to glow from within as if there was some internal light that had been lit and never wavered.

It took her a few tries to get her feet beneath her.  Wet sand clumped at her knees. Stumbling up the beach to him, she launched herself into the air towards her Noose. If he braced himself, he'd be able to catch her, and end up with a soaking wet Seagull in his arms. Otherwise she'd likely cause him to tumble backwards into the sand, landing with his Seagull on top of him. No thought was given to the carefully folded clothes he'd been holding, if she even noticed them at all.

Noose filled all of her senses. She peppered his cheeks and lips with kisses. "Hi! Do you want to go swimming? It's not really that cold. Okay it is that cold but you won't notice. You might notice. I'll distract you if you notice."

Francois watched her in the water for a long moment. She so full of joy and hope that, sometimes, it was hard to be around her. Alixen believed the best about a lot of people, even the ones who didn’t deserve it. Like him. Not for the first time, Francois wondered who Alixen would be if he hadn’t come into her life. Would she be better off without the Nightmare Weed he supplied? Would she be happier if the spirits didn’t play havoc with her mind? Franc wasn’t a Black Widow, but he felt like the answer was somehow, yes.

She crawled out of the water, heading toward him and Francois was headed in her direction before he could stop himself. He should have turned around and left. He should not have come here at all. But he had to see her one more time. He had to hold her in his arms. It would be cruel to just ghost out of her life without a backward glance. Francois had done that a lot of other people in his life, people that he was closer to than his Seagull.

He had to at least tell her why.

She launched herself at him and caught her, but she’d been moving too fast. They both went down in a heap, her dry clothing scattered on the sands of the beach. He started to say something about how he’d gone to the trouble of bringing her dry clothes, but she peppered his face in kisses, causing Francois to kiss her in return until he grasped a handful of her hair and yanked, suspending her face mere inches from his own.

If we go into the water, we won’t be swimming. And I’d rather do that on land, my dear.” Francois said, kissing her once more. He bit her lip hard enough to hurt but not draw blood. He would have all the blood he wanted from her soon. Maybe.

We should go inside. I brought you something. A gift. To apologize.” Francois said.

We need to talk.

"We are on land." She took his hands in hers, playing along the lengths of his fingers before entwining hers with his and pressing them down against the damp sand. The waves came rushing in, crashing gently at the shore. They could be swallowed by the ocean and still live. She knew because the spirits knew. No harm would come to them here, now.

Like her, Noose's veins ran with sea water. Unlike her, he seemed to actually have a preference of on the water over in the water. What wasn't a question for either of them was the desire that heated the air between them. Noose was sparks and lightning. Lix knew getting too close would leave her burning, but it was all too beautiful to resist.

"What do you have to say that the sea can't hear?" she asked. Alixen had heard that he had a gift for her. She loved gifts. They were wonderful. Except when given out of obligation or apology.  She didn't want apology gifts. Apology gifts meant there was something to apologize for. If the thing hadn't happened yet, then it could just not happen. Then no need for an apology or an apology gift.

Things really would be so much simpler if Noose would just listen to her on such things.

She pressed his arms harder into the sand in a gesture that she was quite clear communicated for him to stay. Hands covered in drying salt water reached between their bodies, tangling in his belt and the opening to his pants. Her fingers slid against the heat of him, then curled, gripping, grasping, finding him responsive to her despite his words.

She smiled. Her skin was chilled, but he was like a roaring fire beneath her. The heat of his cock radiated against her hand as she guided him to where she wanted and then slid him deep inside her with a single long, smooth movement. Unlike the rest of her, that tight channel was so warm, so shockingly warm. His Seagull moaned as she began to rock back and forth on him gently. She raised herself up and sank down just as slowly as before.

Her breath came faster. She opened her eyes and looked down at him. "So then," she said, as she continued to leisurely ride him, "talk."

Alixen pressed his down into the sand and Francois grew only a little annoyed at her for cutting him off. He needed to tell her what was going on before he left. He needed to make her understand why he had to leave, that he wasn’t abandoning her. It occurred to him, briefly, that he could just ask her to come with him. Just pack her onto the ship and take her away from this place so that she didn’t have to be without him.

He could also just set fire to his ship. That would be faster than the prolonged agony that Seagull would visit upon his crew for kidnapping her. For reasons he couldn’t fathom, Seagull was loyal to Etienne Roux. She wouldn’t leave him without compelling reason and she wouldn’t stop trying to get back to him if Francois kidnapped her. But she would blame him if something happened to Etienne while she was away. He wasn’t ready to cross that threshold.

Either way, he wasn’t thinking about it by the time she went for his pants.

Seagull, we really need to talk. I have to tell to you--fuck…

She grasped his cock and stilled his tongue in one movement. His body responded because it always did responded to Seagull. She was his personal siren, always guiding him to toward the rocks when he knew he should sail on and leave her behind. She shifted and pushed him inside of her and Francois’s resistance shifted into a growl of approval as she started to ride him slowly and intently. It wouldn’t last. They’d be tearing into each other soon.

So then, talk.” she said.

I, uh...nngh, damn it, woman…” he said trying to string together two thoughts that didn’t end with him rolling her over and taking her hard in the sand.

Something’s happened. I...I have to go for awhile…” he said, reaching beneath her slip to grasp her breasts as she rode him.

The steady tide of the ocean set her pace. Enveloping him deep inside her, Alixen looked down at Noose, watching his face as the pleasure of being buried deep within her swept over him. He could barely speak. Silly. He didn't need to speak. Not now. Not if he was going to say the thing that would make him need to apologize. Not when he could focus on the tight heat of her body rocking against his, stealing away his thoughts until nothing was left but her.

Even as he slid his hands up her body beneath her soaking wet slip, he was speaking words of leaving. She felt the spirits slide over her skin, warning her. Her breathing grew heavier at the feel of his strong hands. She slowed even more, knowing both their instincts would scream and fight. Why was he telling her this? He always went away. That was what Noose did. He went away, he came back, he went away again. The sea was as much his mistress as any woman he'd ever fucked. Why was telling her this? And why was it important enough to talk about while she achingly slowly rose off of him slightly before lowering herself back down. She repeated the movement and asked, "Go? What kind of go. How long?"

"Leave Chaillot. Can't return for awhile. Something has happened and I need to go warn someone."

Her gaze sharpened on his. "How. Long." The words were timed with the rising and fall of her hips, sinking him fully inside her.

"I don't know, Seagull. I'll be back eventually. I just don't know how long this will take."

The wind whipped her wet hair against her face. She could hear the spirits screams in the salt air, beating against her skin. "You're leaving." Her voice  was laced through with something dark and desperate. She rocked against him, fighting her urge to ride him as hard and fast as she could. "You're leaving Chaillot." She couldn't resist anymore. She needed him. He needed her. "You can't leave." Her hips moved faster, her body hungry and needy and refusing to accept what he had just said. Her eyes blazed. Soon she was fucking him hard, driving him into her. His Seagull snarled down at him. "You would leave me?"

The realization seized her as her chest tightened in a pain she didn't recognize or understand. She looked down at him, riding him violently now, and in an instant fury gripped her. She struck out at him with her hand before tearing at his chest with her fingers and nails, seeking to make him bleed while she fucked him.

Blood and pain were nothing new between the two of them. They’d both known, when this all started, that it wouldn’t a conventional relationship that they shared. They both fucked other people and enjoyed each other whenever he was home. Given that her “wolf” was one of the main reasons that he couldn’t stay in Chaillot, Francois figured that Alixen understood why he might have to leave from time to time. But as she realized that he was leaving Chaillot for a time, that he was really leaving her and didn’t know when he was coming back...Francois heard something in Seagull’s voice that he’d not heard before.

Hurt.

He’d hurt her. He felt like shit.

He didn’t have time to dwell on that, though, because she was hitting him shortly after. Her nails drew lines of fire down his chest. He yelped, grasping her wrists and trying to hold them still. Juxtaposed against the sensation against the feel of being buried inside of her while she rode him. Anger, both at her and at himself, renewed his strength. Francois rolled Alixen over onto her back and pinned her down on the sand, driving himself deep into her. He hated her a little bit in that moment. Before he showed up today, he was fully decided on his path. He needed to go to Dena Nehele. He knew that.

Fury spurred him into fucking her as hard as he dared, uncaring of how much sand  got them. He vanished the slip so that he could see her breasts, her whole body, and then let go of her wrists. Her nails dug into his back, raking his skin as hard as they’d raked over his chest moments ago.

I’m. Coming. Back.” Francois said, each word coming in time with the staccato rhythm of his thrusts.

Not..trying to hurt you…” Francois said, even as his thrusts grew sharper and harder. He always hurt her. He loved hurting her. In his heart of hearts, his need to hurt her was the only way that he could prove to himself that he cared about her.

So he cared for her as hard as he could.

Noose grasped her wrists and pulled her from the slashed skin of his chest. He held her firm, rolling her onto her back and pinning her beneath them. She snarled and snapped at him with her teeth, bucking beneath him which only sent fresh waves of pleasure crashing through her body. She only relented when he thrust into her so hard she thought he might tear through her.

Her muscles eased beneath the familiar pain, her back arching beneath him. The sand gave beneath her movements, molding itself to the curves of her body. She tucked her legs up high against her sides, giving him even deeper access to her body if he chose to take it.

He stole her slip, leaving her naked beneath him. The moment he released her wrists, her nails found purchase in his back. Trails of heat that welled with blood, she raked her nails over him again and again, both pulling him closer and punishing him for his idiocy, for leaving, for leaving her.

He told her he was coming back and she snarled at him. Her told her he wasn't trying to hurt her. Alixen's eyes took on that far away look, that spirit touched look. Her neck curved, her chin raising as she tried to look up at him.

"Yes. You are. You like hurting me. You like... fuck, you like it when I scream your name. You think you like my body now but we both know you love when it's covered in your marks." She lifted her chin further, baring her throat. "What's stopping you?" She moaned through grit teeth, hurt and anger and desire fighting within her body to win the top spot in her mind and actions.

"If you're going to hurt me, fucking hurt me!" she screamed at him.

Seagull snarled and snapped at him, her anger palpable even to him. They always fought. They got angry at each other. They threatened not to see each other again and went their separate ways. And yet somehow they always found their way back to each other. Francois fucked Alixen hard and deep, driving himself as deep as he dared when she adjusted her position to take him further inside her. The crash of the waves against the shore was louder than the rhythmic crack of flesh against flesh, but not the sound of her screams.

She clawed at him. He would regret letting her do it, later, but the burn of those lacerations provided a clarity that wasn’t there before. He’d have to deal with the sting later, when she was able to dull her pain with the Nightmare Weed. He hoped that she didn’t smoke it all too soon. He wanted to celebrate his eventual return by letting her get so high that she let him do anything he wanted.

She talked about being covered in his marks, asking him what was stopping him from hurting her. She kept nipping at him, kept taunting him, kept demanding that he do the thing he wanted to avoid. But he felt himself getting closer and closer to the edge. She knew what he wanted. He knew what she needed.

She screamed at him.

Francois’s right hand closed around her throat in a vise grip that cut the air off from her lungs. Panic widened her eyes. He squeezed. He slammed into her. Her hands, strong as they were, closed around his wrist. He pushed her into the sand, even as his climax built, and watched Alixen struggle and fail to draw breath. He could crush her windpipe right now and she’d die slowly and painfully. His own breathing grew hard and heavy, hot breath washing over her face. There would be no mistaking the bruises on her when this was all said and done. He didn’t even have to tell her that she was his. They both knew it and they both knew that she always would be, even if she married and had children after he left her today.

A final groan tore from his throat as he went over the edge, his grasp so tight that he knew his Seagull would never forget today.

He came so hard that he didn’t immediately register that she’d stopped fighting.

He fucked her with a fury and passion that was heightened even for them.

She didn't know when she would see him again. He was abandoning her. Leaving. Didn't know when he was coming back. She didn't want his stupid apology. If he didn't go, he wouldn't have to apologize. She was about to scream those very words at him when his hand seized her throat hard and everything in her shifted. Her cunt grew slicker as she desperately gasped for air.

Her body fought fruitlessly as her vision began to blur. Her ears were filled with a hollow echo of no sound at all, like the waves were trying to reach her and somehow were so far away. Even the spirits went quiet. She whimpered and fought, clawing at his hands. She bled him, knowing even in that moment that if he gave in to her silent demands and released her, she would be even more furious with him than she already was. She had challenged his dominance, the spirit touched girl who danced with the Blood as if death was merely another adventure for her to embark on.

Noose had accepted her challenge.

The familiar taste spread over her tongue and she knew he was taking her under. Her lips parted in a silent scream as that knowledge broke over her. Release. Bliss. Complete submission. Pleasure pulled her under, her muscles contracting around him as she came hard on his cock, milking his shaft and covering him in a fresh wash of heat. His grip tightened, and she fell into the dark, consciousness pulled from her mind.

The last thought she had before dark curled around her was wondering if he would keep fucking her after she fell unconscious. She hoped he would.

Once he was certain that she was still alive, Francois carried Seagull inside the house. He laid her down on the couch and cleaned her up, watching as the bruises were already forming and darkening on around her throat. The scratches in his chest and back stung, rivulets of blood trailing along his skin. Despite the pain, Francois made sure that Alixen was clean and comfortable before taking her to the bedroom. He placed her under the blankets and let her rest, then went to retrieve their clothes.

Back inside the house, Francois bathed and saw to his injuries, then got out and got dressed again. He took a moment to look over the house and all of its effects, then sat down and considered how he was going to talk to Alixen about everything that was happening. She didn’t want to hear it before, but she’d have to hear it soon. The day was winding down. He’d have to get back to the ship soon if they were going to reach Raej on time. There was still so much to do and so little time in which to handle it. Even now, he was still considering just taking Alixen with him.
She wouldn’t go with him.

He sighed, held his face in his hands. Nothing was ever easy. Nothing had been easy since he left home. Oh, the sea was freedom, but he missed Chaillot so much that he couldn’t sleep some nights. He stood up and started to prepare some food, snacking on a bit of cheese here and some fruit there to take the edge of his hunger. Once the platter was ready, he headed into the bedroom.

She was stirring as he walked in.

Hey, Seagull. I brought you food. Uh, I know it doesn’t make everything better, but you need to eat.” he said.

Lix eyed him warily from the bed. When he brought the tray closer, she leaned forward to snatch a piece of fruit off of it before retreating back into herself. She never took her eyes off of him.

"You're not leaving," she said flatly. "The Spirits would have told me if you were leaving and they didn't. Therefore, it's not happening. You just think you're leaving." She gave a sharp nod of her head, satisfied with the reality she had created in which Noose was not talking about going away and coming back maybe never.

"Why would you even want to leave?" she continued, snatching a piece of cheese from the tray next. Dark bruises bloomed over her naked arms, flowing like spilled ink down her neck. "Chaillot is your home. You can't tell me you're bored. There is a war on! What could be less boring than that?" She shoved the rest of the piece of cheese in her mouth before taking another.

"Besides. I'm here."

Her jaw was set in a way he had seen before, when she dug her heels in and refused to accept anything she didn't choose to. Alixen's spirit was filled with childlike joy, a thing often contagious to those around her. But her tantrums were just as epic as any toddlers.

"You can't actually want to leave me." Her lip quivered, but she managed to fight back the tears that welled in her eyes. The Spirits would have told her. Why didn't they tell her?

"You can't really want that." She looked up at him and a single tear spilled down her cheek. "Do you?"

Some days, when Francois considered the man he used to be, he hated the man he’d become.

Today was one of those days.

Pinned under her gaze, it took all of Francois restraint not to flinch or turn away. She deserved his full attention. She deserved the truth. He was, in effect, abandoning her for an unknown period of time. He’d never understood her spirits, but she depended on them for the truth, for information, and he believed that they were real for her. If they were real, he hated them for not preparing her for what was happening now.

You could just take her with you…

The thought slithered into his head smoothly that it took him a moment to realize that he’d formulated half of a plan to kidnap her before stopping himself. She couldn’t stop him, not with his power. He could take her, much as he often took her body for his pleasures, and sail away. Let Etienne Roux come after him. Maybe it would spur the Warlord Prince into a fight that would see one of them dead. Francois could live with those odds for himself.

But not for his crew...and not for her.

It’s not about the war, Alixen. There’s...like I said, I started working for someone and they’ve been good to me. A while back, someone tried to kill him. Now, that killer may try again. I need to warn him. It’s...it’s not far away. Dena Nehele is only a few months by ship. I mean, I could go there and come back as soon as I can. But even if I do, it’s getting harder to get onto the mainland.

Etienne hired some Eyrien to start destroying ships. He’s putting entire crews to the sword. Your wolf would rather kill his own people that let go of his power, Lix. And if your spirits cared about you, they’d tell you that Etienne and I can’t live in the same world.
” Francois said.

We’re different men and we’re going to kill each other someday soon.

He knew that she hated talking about his hatred of the Roux family. He couldn’t let that stop him, though. She had to know it all.

I don’t want to leave you. Are you kidding? You’re...you’re my best friend, Lix. You’re more than that. But if this war goes on any longer, more people are going to die. And when it’s over, Etienne is going to kill me or I’m gonna kill him. That’s just how it works for the Blood.” Francois said.

I understand if you hate me. I just...you deserve the truth. If no one else tells it to you, I will. I promised you that long ago.
