* Plot Information for Chaillot

Alois Oberonn has proven herself to be a witch with both the vision and capability to run Chaillot in the aftermath of mass death and destruction. With a hero of the people--Jérémie Tailor--at her side as First Escort, many believe that the territory is well on its way to recovery. Yet not everything is what it seems: the Red Market holds Chaillot in its clutches, Dark Jeweled boogeymen might be real, Landen rule Touleans, and there are whispers of worse things on the horizon.

Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Zadig is startlingly intelligent, possessed of an eidetic memory that both serves him well and keeps him from sleeping at night.  His mind is always working, whether it is processing memories, or taking in his surroundings with enormous detail.  His is the mind of a Prince set on overdrive, and largely incapable of slowing down, save for when he sleeps, and is only if he can.  This has been true since before his Birthright, and he can recall with crystal clarity events as far back as his fourth or fifth year.  It is truly uncanny, and for some, somewhat disturbing.  Zadig’s eye for detail gives him the semblance of an energetic man, as he is always taking in information and processing that information into actual conversation.  He can absolutely talk, and can be seen as social, even charming, albeit with some bold awkwardness in the form on being perhaps too direct.  Zadig's favorite past time is deducing things about people based on their first meeting, sometimes they are merely factual, other times they are concise and uncomfortably insightful.

His eye for detail has made him not only a prime example of his Caste, but has also made him one of Chaillot’s prime Naval Strategists and Tacticians.  Zadig is able to think in both small and large moves, having an eye for the details of small units but never losing sight of how those details fit into the larger picture.  Internally, he is a number of thoughts running at once, multi-tasking to the point of being nearly manic.  In the absence of something to occupy the width and breadth of his thoughts, he can become listless and unhappy.  Occasionally, when this happens, he can focus on his experiences in battle, and the trail of blood he has left in his wake, not only those he slew, or ordered slain, but those in his command that he has lost.  Zadig is well-liked by his crews, because he is the sort of commander that literally knows everyone’s name, where they are from, and if they have any family of their own.  This memory, in some cases, becomes burdensome.

Zadig can be obsessive when given a task, or something to focus on, be that a person, a place, or a thing.  Once his mind is engaged, he will see out whatever it is to an ultimate conclusion.  It is what gives him purpose and energy, especially in the wake of leaving the Navy.  He enjoys problem solving, and will seek out problems to solve. Anything will do.  Even if he has to acquire a journeyman’s understanding of a given topic, it will be something that occupies his busy mind for a space of time.  Zadig is ordered and structured in his thoughts, and can cut a single straight line through a task or subject once it grips him, left to his own devices, he defaults to multiple things to occupy him, in an effort to avoid what he considers absolute boredom.

Likes:
  • 1 Puzzles, Problems, Solutions; Zadig's mind is always busy, anything that can slow it down for even a minute is a welcome thing.  It could be an inn puzzle, a crossword, a battle plan, a person, or a mysterious crime.  Any and all things cn be solved, and will be, given enough time and attention.
  • 2 Information; whether gained by reading, attending a lecture, or listening at a party, Zadig consumes data like other people eat sweets.  He remembers it all, processes it, organizes it, codifies it, and eventually makes use of it.  At times, he will even discard it, if it is something he views as irrelevant to his needs.
  • 3 The Sea; It is, perhaps, one of his most romantic qualities.  He loves the sea and sailing, that he was skilled at making war upon it was secondary to the joy of simply sailing.  Watching the sun rise and seat over a boundless horizon, drawing up a deepwater marlin over the side knowing the galley would have fresh fish for inner.  The spouts of whales, and the salt spray in a squall...Zadig loves the sea.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Officious People; Zadig and authority can mix, but it depends on who wields that authority.  Petty leadership is not leadership at all.  The Naval Officer who insists on taking command over a bloodied veteran, simply because they care more about asserting their authority than actually leading.  The aristo who insists they know better, simply because they stand higher socially, and thus it is them that calls the shots, no matter how trivial or petty the task or item at hand might be.
  • 2 Boredom; Zadig admits that boredom is entirely subjective, what is boring to him may not be to others, but whatever form it takes, he tries to avoid it if at all possible.  Being idle is the worst possible thing that can happen to him or his overactive mind, and his avoidance of this sensation is often what motivates him to act, or to potentially seek out bad but previously effective habits.
  • 3 Reminders; Zadig does not like being reminded of his Naval Service, while he served with distinction, it is the blood and loss that weights on him.  An mention of his past immediately conjures up indelible images and a list of names of the dead that will no longer brighten his deck or the homes of their families.  It triggers a need for distraction, so he can think about anything else at all.
Fears:
  • 1 Addiction; Zadig fell into bad habits to stave off boredom and depression.  He drank, he self-medicated, and he essentially endangerered everyone around him.  A Strung-Out Red Prince is not just a danger to his Family, he's a danger to the Territory.  He has the power and the skill to alter outcomes, and addiction is neither safe nor desirable for a mind like his.  It would ruin him, and turn him into the worst Zadig he could possibly be.
  • 2 Insanity; Zadig is well aware that he has a peculiar mind, and that he always has.  He was able to satisfy it for most of his life, but having retired from the Navy to avoid the negative emotions associated with his servce has left him with fewer acceptable outlets for the way he works.  It had been too easy to angle towards addictiion, too easy to sublimate his intellect with his ID, too easy to be terrible, and he fears that it could become a permanent condition.
  • 3 Being Forced Back int War; Zadig served his Territory, and ultimately it brought him to Dark Haven.  He does not want to be a pawn in anyone's games but his own, and will absolutely balk at anyone attemting to force him to take up arms again.  He knows he can be compelled to do so, but he fears for his mental health should it occur.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Efficiency; Zadig is particularly gifted with strategy and tactics.  He can survey a map of a battle plan, and not only discern his own best strategy, but the likely moves of his opponents based on resource available, the wide array of variables that happen in battle, and the present disposition of ships or men.  It has served to secure him many victories, and all with a minimum of expense of resources, and minimal losses where he could manage it.  Zadig has been able to ascertain when the risk was worth the effort, or if the payment were upside down.  This can extend into social situations, organization, and other places where strategy can be leveraged.
  • 2 Explosions; A form of power bolts, in a way.  Zadig is able to cause energetic blasts of force, as focused as small black powder anti-personnel grenade, or as large as a Naval artillery blast.  Depending on the size of each blast, these can be detonated in rapid succession, or in a slower pattern for larger explosions.  He is able to place the smaller ones with a fair bit of accuracy, while the larger have such a wide area of effect that they are far less precise.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Battlefield & Triage Healing; Zadig ignored this part of his development in his youth, feeling that it had no relevance to him, despite an interest in a Naval career.  He has long regretted this oversight, but has found it a gap in his training that is difficult to overcome.  While he has enough mundane knowledge to perform first aid, he is unable to do so with Craft, which is far more effective.
  • 2 Emotional Projection/Manipulation; Zadig can do neither of these.  He cannot control his own emotions, let alone someone else’s, and he certainly would not project his flashes of dark memory on anyone.  This has left him unable to either project his emotions into another, or to manipulate the feelings of another.  It has also, in turn, left him vulnerable to such manipulations.  Tampering with his emotions could trigger his memories, and in turn, potentially send him spiraling towards bad habits that he fears could leave him addicted and unfit for freedom.

History:

Zadig Nevenoe was born into a wealthy family of the Blood.  The family was made up of Warlords and Witches, for the most part.  His family had never produced  Warlord Prince or a Queen, and it had been generations since anyone had a Dark Birthright.  So, we Zadig came along, no one was surprised by the fact that he was a Prince.  He identified strongly with the Caste, and even in his youth, seemed to exemplify the nature of his Caste.  As a boy he was painfully neat and tidy, and terribly precocious.  His Family learned early on that Zadig had an excellent memory for what he saw, read and heard, sometimes reproducing words and events that were better left in private or unspoken.  The newest Nevenoe was a handful, to say the least.  His memory allowed him to learn subjects quickly and easily, but also conspired to make him bored swiftly, which prompted him to skip out on sessions or disappear into the wilds of the estate.  Zadig generally avoided trouble by being able to prove that a given tutor had nothing left to teach him.

His parents became a little more concerned when he was caught dissecting frogs beside the estate pond, using a book he had stolen from a tutor as a guide.  His Father began to put him to work then, he would assist with the running of the estate, learning his figures, and he would help with his Father’s modeling hobby, building naval vessels into bottles.  Zadig found that he had a talent for both.  When his Birthright came, and he came away with the Green, his family became a bit more concerned.  His Father thought to channel the energetic and brilliant boy into a variety of activities, hoping to satisfy his literally Darker needs.  Combat training began, leading to textbook tactics and strategy.  Soon afterward, because of the modeling hobby he shared with his Father, it lead him to naval strategy and tactics.  Retired Naval officers were brought in as tutors, and when Zadig felt that had become dry and boring, without the ability to apply theory to practice, his Father changed tack and brought in a Landen Scientist.  Anything to keep Zadig occupied.

Zadig was twelve when he ran away the first time.  The estate had become terribly boring, and nothing seemed to occupy his mind, so he decided to see what the rest of Chaillot had to offer.  Of course, his Mother had predicted this outcome, and he was refused the use of a coach and a horse, but the boy, undaunted, set out to walk promising one of the stable boys that ‘he would walk the earth, and learn all there was to learn’.  His Father rode  out to find him after an hour or two, knowing the Zadig would take the road to the port, because that was, by his son’s own words, the most logical path.  His Father rode beside Zadig for another hour, before he asked his son if he was hungry yet, and if he had thought to pack enough food and water for the journey.  Zadig had brought books, and two journals to fill with his newfound knowledge, but not food.  He sighed and surrendered, riding back to the estate with his Father.  He ran away again two years later, and his Father caught him lying to a recruiter down at the port, and attempting to enlist in the Navy.  Zadig was dragged back this time, and did not forgive his Father for using his ear as a handle for at least three months.

It was arranged for Zadig to attend the Naval University at Beldon Mor.  This satisfied Zadig, and he was able to attend at fifteen, much younger than the norm, but he passed every test the admissions board threw at him, and was begrudgingly admitted, along with a donation large enough to suggest a building ought to be named for the family.  He proved a challenging student for the University, whose staff attempted to throttle back the speed at which Zadig consumed and learned information. For example, in his first year, he read his textbooks across the span of a several exciting and sleepless evenings, and arrived at his classes more than prepared.  Inside of the first quarter, he was asking for additional texts, even though there might not be another for a given class.  He was meant to attend the University until his Offering came, and then he could choose to become an officer in the Chaillot Navy, but they soon ran out of ways to keep Zadig busy and occupied.  So, at seventeen, he was sent on cadet Midshipman cruises, working as a very junior officer aboard active Naval vessels.

His Descent came, and he came away with the Red, all but guaranteeing his place in the Navy.  He did not yet have a Queen, so he must be occupied with service, or so the prevailing wisdom stated.  Zadig rose swiftly through the ranks, his memory and acumen allowing him to advance quickly to the rank of Captain and command a ship.  He earned a reputation at Sea, starting with smuggler interdiction, and the pirate hunting.  With a single ship,he was able to accomplish what some needed small squadron’s for.  He knew the names and history of all of his men, and always took steps to support them when and where needed.  Zadig saw it as logic, a means to bind men to him and their purpose, the sailors saw it as an officer that cared, which was not untrue.  He managed to forge a crew that would go anywhere so long as ‘Captain Z’ gave the order.  Zadig discovered an ability to predict and even direct the movements of the enemy at sea, and was known as a somewhat bloodless commander, with every decision made cold and precisely and absent of emotion.

Zadig fought alongside his men, going over the rail with his boarding parties as often as he did not.  He was not a Warlord Prince, but he was trained and efficient, and was fascinated by the single minded nature of personal combat.  Zadig served in the Navy for years, every engagement so different, it managed the trick of occupying his interest for the next two decades.  What the Prince did not count on was that his memory would eventually become a burden.  He remembered every loss he suffered, viscerally, down to the names and wounds that claimed the lives of men he had learned to love as though they were his own family.  Losing even a topsman was like having a finger cut away.  He wrote every letter of consolation himself.  He remembered every man he ever had to kill in battle, every ship he sank, every fatherless orphan he ever personally encountered.  Forgetting began to seem like a solid option, and so at about age forty, he retired.

Retirement was not easy.  Not only did he have to contend with his own memory and mind, he had to deal with the rise of fear and resentment of the Dark Jeweled.  It was already a difficult thing to face, these memories of his, but as he made his transition from sailor to civilian, he began to realize there were few places where he was welcome, few places where he was not actively feared.  Liquor did not achieve the memory loss he sought after.  He began to look into other remedies, some of them supplied by a Black Widow.  A poison.  A drug.  The line between the two was terribly thin.  For two years, he was something of a lout, disgruntled with life and indeed, disillusioned by the current reception of his Jewels--gifts from the Darkness that he was not really at fault for having.  He lounged around the estate avoiding the public due to their fear, getting underfoot and into trouble, and finding that drinking, drugs, and women did nothing for his mood or his memory.  The Prince went through a Rut raised by drugs and alcohol; but thankfully the woman that won his focus knew what to do, but he was hardly himself and nearly killed at least two men who had made every effort to get out of his way.  Prevailing wisdom held that he was probably dangerously disturbed, and when Dark Haven opened, Zadig sought help and checked himself in.  He discovered Lenore Noir then, and she helped set him to rights.  He stopped drinking and using in Dark Haven, and whether asked or not, he began to assist in keeping the place organized, even going so far as to read the articles and documentation available on the nature of the Dark Jeweled.

Zadig would often pursue the beauteous Lenore, but as he was a patient over the course of nearly four years, nothing ever developed between them.  Invested in avoiding a slow slouch into self-destruction, he worked closely with Lenore to develop control over his racing mind and his baser instincts.  At the end of four years of work, he was cleared for release.  For awhile he was something of a troubleshooter for various agencies, investing his talents along a variety of avenues.  His hungry mind and memory allowed him to a achieve narrow bands of expertise in a variety of fields.  He began to pay attention to local news, and he would arrive at crime scenes, in an effort to assist the local efforts.  Very occasionally, he was hired by someone to investigate a situation, but those were few and far between, and occasional he is dangerously unoccupied.

Zadig has decided to assist in the one place that he most recently felt challenged, and so he returned to Dark Haven, not as a patient, but as support for Lenore and the staff.  With so much afoot in Chaillot, and the demands on Dark Haven, he is certain his help is not only necessary, but will be widely appreciated.

Character in Play:

Zadig looked out across the water, and saw two childen playing in the surf with a set of wooden boats.  He smiled at the sight.  He had always liked children, they were so full of possibilities and imagination.  They were always honest and direct, something Zadig still was, and still appreciated.  Zadig had come down to the beach to watch the sun ride over the ocean, he had remained there to read a few new scientific papers that had recently been published.  He had conjured a lounge chair and umbrella specifically to do, but he had not considered that others might come and interrupt the quiet of the morning.

One child rammed their boat into another making a crashing sound, and yelling out, Avast!  That was all the reminder Zadig needed.  His mind latched onto it, and he was suddenly chasing the rabbit of memory down the hole of his past.

"Cap'n!"  His bosun yelled out, "Z!!"

Zadig's eyes snapped over to the man.  He had been staring out at the arrangement of the vessels before him, puzzling out where his ship, Serenity needed to be.  "I hear you, Allain."

"Orders, Sir?"

Zadig gave them, and then nodded, gesturing for a man to take the wheel from him.  "Launch!  Lower the Launch!"  He dashed to the rail and turned to address the crew.  "I need our strongest backs, I need to get tot he fleet flagship and warn the other Captain."

"About what?" a couple of crewmen chirped.

"We're sailing into a trap."  He conjured  looking glass, and handed it to his Topsman.  "Look there, by the reef, and over that island.  Look carefully, the masts blend in, but they are there.  if we keep our flotilla divided, we'll suffer for it."  Zadig reached out, and tugged the glass to the east, "And there, fire ships.  If we go into that lagoon, they'll close us in and some of us will burn."

The First Mate spoke, "What about the signal flags?"

"We're both engaged, there's too much fire and smoke to trust---"

"Brace!  Brace! Brace!"

Zadig shook his head and scowled, the memory clouding his vision for a moment, before he took a breath and checked to se where whe was.  He was still at the beach, still watching children play in the surf, only now he had perspireed, and his hands were slightly shaking from the memory of that battle.  He closed his eyes and took several long, slow breaths as he had been taught.  Of course it ha been  memory, he as retired, after all.  Zadig pinched the bridge of his nose, and growled to himself.  He would have to make another appointment with Lenore.
