* Plot Information for Chaillot

Alois Oberonn has proven herself to be a witch with both the vision and capability to run Chaillot in the aftermath of mass death and destruction. With a hero of the people--Jérémie Tailor--at her side as First Escort, many believe that the territory is well on its way to recovery. Yet not everything is what it seems: the Red Market holds Chaillot in its clutches, Dark Jeweled boogeymen might be real, Landen rule Touleans, and there are whispers of worse things on the horizon.

Appearance

Play By: Jessica Brown Findlay
Distinguishing Features: Odile is smallish and sturdily built, with queerly light eyes and dark, curly hair. Her stare is intense and direct. She tends to dress in pale clothes, despite how much blood she tends to see.

Personality

Personality:
Despite her caste, Marie-Odile is not known for her warm and cuddly nature. Raised in a household with little adult supervision and harshly bullied by her more accomplished siblings, she is incredibly sensitive to slights and won't hesitate to exercise the sharp side of her tongue to any cruelty in her presence. Those she perceives as arrogant or cruel are often recipients of her disdain; she feels deeply for other underdogs, and what few people she is sympathetic to tend to be people under her care or others who have been cruelly treated by life.

Odile's defining trait is her resilience. Though she spent her early childhood being largely ignored by her parents in favor of her casted and Jeweled siblings, she never stopped dreaming and scheming to better her own lot. Even before she knew that she'd wear a Jewel at her Offering, Odile intended to explore the Healer's Craft. Something about the amount of control it offered (because she felt she had none as a child) appealed to her. Her ambition as a young girl was to gain a measure of independence, and in that too a Healer's work called to her, as a Healer as an employer would leave her often alone, cleaning rooms once the Healer was done with them.

Her deepest secret is her feelings of overwhelming rage. Odile goes through life denying her true feelings, indulging only when safely among the residents of the Dark Haven's second building, whom no one would believe anyway. To the world, she's a chilly Healer with the emotional depth of a teaspoon, but her internal life is rich and deep and largely the unacknowledged pain of being the left-behind, ignored child. Her parents' attempts to temper her dreams and ambitions, paired with her siblings' bullying and scorn, taught her that her emotions were tools to be used by those stronger than her to make her suffer. Even an offhanded rudeness is internalized and ingrained into Odile's need for revenge. Now that she's older and nominally free of her siblings, she still hasn't let go of her anger, and in fact doesn't know how.

Odile's deepest yearning is for justice, and for past wrongs done to her to be acknowledged. She knows she'll never get it, and strains to remain a productive, safe member of society. Her torment of the involuntarily committed Dark Jewels is like a safety valve, allowing her to let off pressure before returning to daily life.

Likes:
  • Dark Haven - Odile lives and breathes her work at the Dark Haven--literally. She lives on the premises in case the unstable Dark Jewels hurt themselves, and takes advantage of the ample presence of subjects to learn much more about the Dark Jeweled physiology. Not only is she far separate from her family, she's also able to put away quite a bit of her salary in case she should ever choose to move on.
  • Music - Odile listens to music while she works, and what she doesn't save up she usually spends on music crystals. As a child, her parents listened to music crystals when they were home, and she associates music with high-class endeavors.
  • Clean laundry - Odile likes to be clean. She never wears clothes twice before laundering them; even her aprons and smocks for working in are put through the wash after one wear, even if they aren't bloody. Odile will throw out clothes that become stained and buy more. She can afford to do that because she buys cheap clothes, generally.

    Dislikes:
  • The Dark Jeweled - Jewel strength is very important to her and tends to serve as a deciding factor in who Odile befriends or scorns. She absolutely despises the Dark-Jeweled, with few exceptions; her cruelest tormenters were her siblings, three of whom toe the line of Dark-Jeweled instability. However, she will step up to bat for the very Light-Jeweled, particularly those who wear no Birthright Jewel, as she thinks the world is cruel to them in ways that it isn't cruel to even those who wear the White. Her deepest ambition is to see her siblings interred in Dark Haven, where she can return the favor of the pain they inflicted upon her.
  • Discordant noise - Screaming, shouting, music over a certain volume, musical instruments played badly... All of them really bother Odile. Her temper, which is an ever-lurking undercurrent to her life, is easily triggered if she's already stressed by something discordant nearby. (She also can't stand the sounds of people eating near her, so tends to eat separately from others.)
  • Conflict - Odile just wants to be left alone, but if she can't be left alone, she at least wants to converse in peace, and also, in level tones. She doesn't react well or present herself well in the face of stubborn opposition, and tends to knuckle under; she resents every time this happens to her.
Fears:
  • Being Broken - Having been trained her whole life to face a world where she wore no Jewel, Odile never wants to be in a position where she might have to sacrifice her Jewel. As she spent her formative years without her Tiger Eye, she knows she could survive, but she doesn't want to.
  • Losing her place - There's so much of her life at Dark Haven that she loves. Seeing these Dark-Jeweled people forced to respect her and her work makes her happy, and she finds her research fulfilling and exciting. There are, in the entire Realm of Terreille, no opportunities like the one she currently has. Without Dark Haven, she has nowhere to work as she'd like, and she isn't sure she has the capability to start over.
  • Losing control of her subjects - She likes it when the Dark Blood beg her to stop, but she also knows that if they had their Jewels and if she took off her control ring they'd rip her apart in a half-second. Odile isn't precisely heavy-handed with the control ring, but she isn't kind either, because she has no desire to die.
Craft Strengths:
  • Tonic Craft - Odile doesn't work with the traditional healing tonics. No, what she works with are sedatives and what we would recognize today as psychoactive drugs. Since her sedatives are made with Dark Jewels in mind (and their formulation reflects that) they're more effective on people darker than the Opal.
  • Witchfire - Odile is pretty exact with her usage of witch fire.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Psychic Craft - Odile isn't very good at Craft with no perceptible outcome. As a visual learner, she's never really been able to grasp that which cannot be seen or experienced, and as such rather flails in the general direction of competence with any given type of psychic Craft.
  • Warming and cooling spells - Just put a coat on!! THIS. IS. STUPID.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Aurora Fortier, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky witch, 65 (129AP)
Father: Pierre de Ghislaine, White to Tiger Eye Warlord Prince, 67 (127AP)
Sister: Marie-Lucrece Fortier, Summer Sky to Opal Priestess, 41 (153AP)
Brother: Rennes de Ghislaine, Tiger Eye to Rose Warlord Prince, 37 (157AP)
Sister: Marie-Odette Fortier, Rose to Purple Dusk Black Widow, 28 (166AP)
Sister: Marie-Victorique Fortier, Birthright Purple Dusk Queen, 20 (174AP)

History:
Odile was born in 164AP, the third child of her parents and the only one not to gain a Jewel at Birthright. This was not particularly off-putting to her parents, who didn't really have the money for all of the Craft tutors they required with their children's motley collection of castes. As a Blood female, lacking Jewels and safe from Dark-Jeweled instability, they thought to train her for service in aristo houses. Her parents were incredibly busy and hard-working in their attempts to keep five children healthy and fed, and never quite noticed how intense the teasing was from her stronger, casted siblings.

Odile, the lightest and weakest, had a soft heart and took every harsh word right to it. She took her parents' inaction as implicit approval of the abuse she took from her siblings, despite the way they reacted to her siblings' cruelty when they encountered it. While it was expected that she pick up a heavier chore load, her parents considered it a kindness to make sure she was used to the harder work that the Jeweless Blood faced, not a punishment. They certainly didn't want her to pick up her siblings' work or to function as their servant, but in the end that's exactly what happened.

When she made her Offering in 184AP, no one expected her to receive anything. She received her Tiger Eye, and suddenly equaled her father's mature strength. Aurora and Pierre were floored. Odile waited a week to arrange her own tuition at a school for witches who wanted to learn the Healer caste, and then left, only too glad to be free of her parents' house. Working to put herself through school was hard, but Odile was glad to do it; in return for her labor, she got room, board, education, and a little stipend for herself. She excelled at her work, her delicate touch bringing her to the attention of a Healer who specialized in surgical work. There, she assisted in research into landen surgical techniques, and how Chaillot's bounty of drugs could assist in treatment and ease the work required from Light-Jeweled Healers. She became particularly fascinated by the treatment of drug addictions, a common problem in the city where she was training, and how those drugs could benefit her patients.

Initially, she intended to become a Healer to the aristo houses, using her new gifts to perform the superficial work aristos wanted to hide evidence of their age or other infirmities. It was what she had been trained for as a child, anyway. However, shortly after completing her training in 188AP, she received an offer for a continuing-education position at the Dark Haven. The idea of assisting the dangerous and unstable Dark Jewels appealed to her, and in truth Odile really enjoyed the research work she had been doing. In the patient population of Dark Haven, she saw possibility. Not only would she make more marks than she ever had before as a research assistant or servant, she would have a captive group of Dark Jewels to refine her technique on.

The main house Blood are relatively safe, of course; Marie-Odile is a businesslike Healer to those who are respectful of her in return, though she will happily and actively allow pain to come to those who treat her as a captor or a monster or as lesser rather than the Healer she is. However, the Blood interned in building two are the subjects of her research in drug addiction and different Healing techniques... with the approval of the Dark Haven staff, of course...

Character in Play:
He wouldn't stop screaming. Mother Night, how did anyone think through all this noise? On her desk somewhere behind her a crystal player wafted the gentle strains of a modernist composition over the whole sordid scene, but the bells and the piano and the metronome were all lost under the fucking screaming. Odile ground her teeth together as she dropped her scalpel in the disinfectant solution. On the same tray was a pot of preventative paste, meant to cleanse wounds before closing them. It was a new formulation, and required testing. No part of her desired to test her salves and pastes on other employees of the Dark Haven, and this was meant to heal clean incisions. Here in the involuntary confinement building, she saw very little of those. No, she saw skin ripped open on cuffs, worn raw by rope, torn by teeth. She didn't like these people, but she wouldn't offend her own pride as a Healer by improperly tending to their wounds.

"Shut up," she gritted out as she turned to him. "Or I'll let you bleed to death. It'll take a long time and it'll hurt a lot more." It didn't help. He didn't shut up.

Odile set the pot down by his head and picked up a soft, wadded cloth. Next time his mouth opened to let out one of those earsplitting howls, she stuffed the cloth in, effectively muffling the noise. He didn't stop trying to shout, but she certainly could hear the gentle piano-and-metronome of her music now.

She turned her attention to the cut she'd just carved into his forearm. It was already clotting, but that was fine. She summoned a flagon of clean water to hand and poured it over the wound, ignoring the way he stiffened and gagged on the cloth in his mouth. "If you want an infection later, please, tell me," she said, unscrewing the cap on her poultice and dipping her fingers in. The texture was thick and viscous, which was sensible and expected. She'd distilled part of it from dried seaweed, which for some reason always came out like very slippery jelly. "I'll be sure to oblige." She set the jar down, and with her clean hand held his arm down at the elbow to apply the poultice-paste.

It began to work immediately, and she wiped a hand on her apron before she picked up her notebook to write down her observations. As she scribbled (patient's wound began to react immediately) someone knocked at the door to her lab and opened the door. There were very few people who did that, not because Odile was so respected but because she was a rather low-ranking member of staff and hardly anyone bothered her, except when they needed more sedatives. She looked up from her notes to see who might want to talk to her, and smiled thinly at the woman shutting the door behind her.

"Lady Noir," she said. "How lovely to see you. I'm almost done, if you want to have a seat."
