With loaded arms I come, pouring for you
« on: Mar 16, 18, 07:04:47 PM »
It was cold here. Damnably cold, really. At least, it seemed so to the Priestess who made her way up towards the homestead of her old mentor. Adalwolfa was cold most places this time of year, though, as the warming Craft that so many Blood took for granted tended to elude her. It was easier to pack on layers and linger near fires than it was to try and mitigate the surges and lulls that always seemed to plague her warming spells.

Of all places, she minded the cold here the least. The mountains of Vyrkov were bathed in the epitome of clean, crisp, healthy air, and breathing that in never failed to take Adalwolfa's mind back to happier times. Agda had been returned to the Mother some two, almost three years now, but  Adalwolfa thought she still felt the old woman every time she crested the rise just before the old woman's home. She could have visited Tanith in the city, of course. It would've been a warmer and less taxing trip to do so, even. A visit to the Scythia District court was on her agenda for the next week anyway, yet Adalwolfa still chose to make her way out to Agda's old place to visit. It allowed her to a chance to visit the old woman, even though she hadn't been there in years.

That was, truthfully, why she arrived when she did. She thought court would still be in session, and she knew Tanith had taken to serving in Scythia. She wouldn't be disappointed to find the Godi and her charge at home already, but neither would she pass up the chance to sit quietly on that familiar old plot and silently pray to her old mentor for advice, either.

Agda had often joked that Tanith might as well have been a bear herself for all that she seemed not at all bothered by the cold that was part of living in this particular area of Rihland. When the young Priestess had shown up with a bundled bear cub things clicked into place for the old Priestess. There was, Agda had said, a reason for everything. One only had to look to find it, the All-Mother offering guidance with the subtle touch of her hand upon the world they lived in and the lands they walked upon.

Tanith always took her time when she was coming back home, to visit the place that was now where. She also tended to stop and check in upon the older altars. The ones that remained as testaments to those that had come before, that held up under centuries of wear and tear and Eyrien domination. It meant that Adalwolfa was given plenty of time to visit, to commune, and enjoy the crisp air.

The young Godi walked quietly but it was not because she used Craft to do so. She was, ever as she had always been, practically one with the forest. Her footsteps were muffled because she knew how to walk, how to step and not make a noise. Tanith had not, however, learned how to blend in but that was a given considering the giant bear that lumbered behind her as she approached. There were fresh flowers weaved into her hair, ones that spoke of the coming of spring, and they made her stand out brightly in her surroundings.

When she caught sight of Adalwolfa, delight lit up her features, joy apparent as she raced forward and towards the older Priestess. "Adalwolfa!" she exclaimed, hands reaching to clasp the others and hold. "I'm glad to see you!" It always took a moment for Tanith to remember herself when it came to private moments like this. That there was Protocol to follow, a politeness and greeting to offer.

She would get to it but only after she released Adalwolfa's hands with a warm smile. "Did you have a good talk with Agda?" As that was often what she did, still catching herself - even with the time that had passed - speaking out loud and expecting the old Priestess to respond to her.

Adalwolfa!

The Priestess' eyes opened, damp and glossy with proof of the silent but soulful communion she'd been enduring in that quiet, wild place. She drew a breath, reacquainting herself quickly with the physical world, and was smiling by the time she stood up and turned around to face the oncoming Godi.

"Hello, Tanith," she greeted the younger woman, all warmth and contentedness despite the remnants of tears that lingered. Affectionate with her own people, Adalwolfa would be unsatisfied with a mere squeeze of the hands and would prefer a gently strong bearhug - though she'd restrain herself if Tanith wasn't the sort to appreciate it. "Jerbear," she greeted the Godi's ever-present companion with a smile and a nod. Though Adalwolfa herself had never shown the potential to walk the path of the ancient Godis, she appreciated how strong the bond was between Tanith and the huge bear, and tended to treat the latter with as much respect as the former.

Adalwolfa laughed softly at Tanith's question, and nodded.

"Always. I regret not being able to make it up here more often. It is such a comfort to... to feel her," she said, smiling through the urge to let tears rise once more. She'd always been an emotional woman when not guarded, so the fact that her recent prayers/communion/conversation with a ghost had her tearing up was nothing new. Neither was it something to be lamented; sentiment and expression was nothing foreign to Rihlanders. It was just part of a healthy life, something to be encountered with all the practicality and appreciation of the rest of life.

"And to see you!" she added, with a guilty little laugh. The longer she spoke, the further she moved from that tender sadness that'd held her before Tanith's arrival. "How have you been, Tanith?"

Tanith's hands on lingered within Adalwolfa's a moment, a gentle squeeze, before it quickly turned into hug. Loss had touched her life in such a way that those that were close, their lives touched by hers, were always embraced fully and with great affection. Sometimes she was a bit wary, concerned about appearances, but mostly she was unabashed in her affections and adorations. Especially with someone who was, in her eyes, a Priestess to look up to.

There was a rumble from the giant bear, as if he were acknowledging the other Priestess, before he went and settled in what looked like a well worn spot that had been his for years. Tanith rolled her eyes - at her bonded animal companion - but as she was released from the hug (and let go in turn). Her hand reached gently to touch Adalwolfa's face, brushing away the wetness that was there with clear understanding. That her own eyes welled up in response was not a surprise, not when she understood so very well what was meant.

"This is where she is strongest," said Tanith softly, "and it always strikes me every time. As if her presence in life has been eclipsed and made stronger in her passing." A steadying breath was taken, the young Godi closing her eyes briefly. It was a moment of quiet admiration that passed, to one day strive to be exactly what Agda had been for her and for Adalwolfa. No longer did it last than Adalwolfa's guilty laughter.

Tanith's eyes opened up, smile visible not just upon her lips but in the softening of her gaze upon the other Priestess. "I was just thinking about you," she admitted, settling onto her feet properly (toes wiggling into the earth as much as they could). "Did you hear? I found my cousin, Kibeth, Adalwolfa. I'll be in Scythia, serving as her High Priestess." A rosy hue dusted her cheeks. "... but also as a Godi, as I rightly should be."

When she had a small child, brought to Agda by Tyr Madsen, Tanith had been somber and reserved. A quiet thing whose heart bled for having met her cousin Kibeth at that disastrous moot so many years ago only to lose her and her mother. The loss had been made that much more painful because the Darkness had seen fit to see the life of a new bond, a Queen to her Godi Priestess, but it had never taken proper shape.

Not until she had finally found her again.

This is wehre she is strongest, the Godi said, and Adalwolfa couldn't help the proud little smile that rose in spite of the tenderness of the moment. Tanith wasn't her student, and Adalwolfa had no claim over the other Priestess' success at all, but that didn't stop her heart from swelling with pride simply because Tanith was her sister in service to the All-Mother, and she bore an ancient heart and a wise tongue. It felt so painfully rare for to Adalwolfa that those of Tanith's generation venerated the old ways like the Godi did. It did the elder Priestess' heart good to visit with her from time to time and be reminded that no matter how dark things might seem sometimes, there was yet hope for the future of her people.

"In a way, it has," she answered, softly. "She's not bound by her mortal heart anymore, and the spirit is so much stronger than the flesh. Agda had no Priestess children," she pointed out, her smile turning a little guilty at her next words. "So sometimes I like to believe her luck passed on to people like us, those she raised up in the faith. Maybe it's silly, but..." She shrugged, knowing full well that wasn't really how ancestry worked. It wasn't a thought she would have confessed to anyone else, most likely, but if anyone understood the desire to hold on to part of Agda, it would be Tanith.

The Godi's assertion that she'd been thinking of Adalwolfa drew a look of interest from the older woman, whose brows lifted in question. Tanith went on to explain her discovery and her appointment to the Scythia court, and a blend of reactions moved quickly across Adalwolfa's face, plain as day. Elation at the initial revelation that Tanith had found her lost cousin, confusion as she said she was going to Scythia, concern when it became clear she was going there to serve in a court. And then, finally, a stilted look that was difficult to read, because Adalwolfa herself couldn't decide how she felt. While she was of course thrilled that Tanith had reconnected with someone dear to her (though Adalwolfa had no idea how dear, yet), the idea of a Godi being pulled into the spotlight of a formal court sat oddly with her. Something strangely protective and jealous lashed at her, telling her that Tanith was a treasure to be celebrated away from the sight of the Eyriens and Glacians who still resided among their people. Maybe it was just Kalvar's upcoming "moot" and how conflicted Adalwolfa was about it, but she felt strangely possessive about the Rihlander faith, and those who might pervert it into something else in search of their own agendas.

But she realized quickly that she was stumbling, and she summoned a smile, and shook her head.

"I'm sorry, that's just... that's alot to happen all at once," she said. She laughed a little, much like the mother who was trying to be positive and praising while her daughter showed her the masterpiece she'd created just for her by gluing together some prized heirlooms. "But it's wonderful that you've found her! Are you... are... is Jerbear going to be with you?"

"It isn't silly," replied Tanith, easily in agreement. Her thoughts were an echo of Adalwolfa's, finding truth in them. "Not when we both know it to be true." That was the way of things, truly it was. The Godi was terrible at hiding her emotions sometimes, wearing her heart upon her sleeve and her expressions open unless she was making the effort. Rarely did she make that effort though she knew it meant she could be easily read. It was a danger but she could not close herself off, not when it was her place to guide others in understanding the All-Mother and the ways that were forgotten.

A flicker of guilt was there, mostly because part of her somehow worried that Adalwolfa was disappointed. Few existed that venerated the old ways of Rih, most of those Priestesses passed like Agda. It lasted as long as it took Adalwolfa to smile, Tanith's unease floating away as the older Priestess explained. That was all it took: that Adalwolfa explained the look and pause and they could talk and work through it.

Minus the part where she would feel really, really bad about using the family heirlooms like they were pieces of pasta put together on a childish piece of artwork.

"It was a lot for me too," answered Tanith. Raising a hand she fidgeted with one of flowers that was woven into her hair. "I hadn't seen her since she was taken." Her voice dropped, softer and lower in tone. "Her heart calls to mine, Adalwolfa. I was always meant to serve her and be with her and they took her the very day we met." There was no doubt who she meant when she said they. It was the same they that had killed her mother that day as well.

A hand reached for Jerbear, fingers smoothing along his white fur. The tip of her point finger brushed against the cut of her Blood Opal that was upon his ear. "Where I go, he goes. Scythia is still largely untamed, not so crowded and populated as other places. I admit I am a little nervous ..." Her gaze turned back to Adalwolfa. "It would be so easy to hurt me through him and it isn't as if people remember the Godi or the Godar."

Tanith spoke of Kibeth and of finding her once more, and Adalwolfa's hand landed on the other woman's shoulder in a gentle squeeze. The smile that bloomed was warm and sincere, as it genuinely moved Adalwolfa to hear Tanith speak as she did.

"That is a rare and precious gift," she acknowledged. "It's only right that you go to her." Even if it meant exposing the Godi to people who would neither understand nor appreciate the gift that she was. Adalwolfa's eyes shifted to Jerbear, appraised him for a beat, then returned to Tanith.

"It is good to feel fear," she said, her smile deepening to something slightly more conspiratorial. "It is a chance to show our courage." She paused, then added, "And for you, your faith. The All-Mother has brought you and Kibeth together again; surely she has plans to strengthen you both. She watches over Jerbear and you both, and whatever happens, you can trust that Her hand is in it." She dropped her hand, laced her fingers before her, and shrugged while her smile turned a little sideways. In reassuring Tanith, she'd convinced herself of the purpose in the arrangement of things.

"I believe you both will thrive. You and he will remind our people why the Godi and Godar were such sacred and revered servants of the faith. Things have been difficult, Tanith, but there is change occurring. It is slow - it is terribly slow at times," she said, shaking her head as though she lamented that part most of all. "But I cannot think of a more fitting ambassador for the faith of our mothers than you." She smiled brightly, and glanced to the bear to include him as well. "Than both of you."
