Role: Village Court Black Widow
Faction: None

Appearance

Play By: Caeli Porter [Anya by Alexander Vinogradov]
Distinguishing Features: As a Rihlander, she shares physically common traits with her people, blonde hair, brown eyes and fair features.  Malakay stands a little below average height, but makes up for it in presence especially so when put out.  Her sweet face often leads people to underestimate the Black Widow lurking within.

Personality

Personality: Serious and thoughtful Malakay does not give much away unless she is around people she deeply cares for. Her focus is work and optimizing her efforts. Some might interpret this as studious and shy, but while the former has merit the latter could not be farther from the truth. Malakay values family above all else. The person she is with them is not the same person that one might find while tending to a patient or socializing in court. She will laugh, tease and scold those she is comfortable with and tolerant and patient faced around others.

She is not afraid of confrontation and will initiate it if she feels threatened or worse, undermined. Malakay sets roots in her status and anyone who looks to undercut that is met with a surprising amount of resistance and anger. She is stubborn and does not let grudges go easily, she has been known to argue for the sake of arguing when she becomes too frustrated.

Growing up in a small community, it is difficult for her to open up to new faces and prefers a small group of companions rather than socializing at bigger functions. If she feels that she needs to engage someone who can assist in her personal or professional growth she is more than capable of piling on the charm in order to do so. Sex is a fact of life and while she currently has no interest in settling down as her parents are so eager to see, she finds that the act is best with someone who shares a connection, even if it is reserved for casual encounters.

It is not surprising to those who know her that Malakay is sentimental. She collects small gifts or tokens and keeps them when commemorating a special moment.  Keeping them in a box she  circles back to these often and will guard them fiercely. They are considered one of her most prized possessions. Her family has teased her about this often referring to her as a “Squirrel”. She enjoys receiving gifts of personal value, however if the giver is not someone who holds meaning to her she will rebuff the offering.

Malakay uses her innocent face and petite stature as a tool to influence others. Manipulation is not outside of her scope. Since judgements are being made already, she would rather use them to get what she needs rather than be angry about it.

Likes:
  • 1. Being useful- to the point of indispensability. Malakay takes pride in perfecting her craft, being good at it and insinuating herself in positions where others would find her not only capable but necessary. Though she has no need to rule, she is territorial of her workspace and makes sure to stretch her legs into multiple avenues so that others seek her assistance.

  • 2. Objects of meaning/ Collecting. - So much was taken from the people of Rihland. Her father, a warrior in his own right was enscripted before her birth as a guard for the Eyrien court. The long hours took him away from his family and this was especially difficult as growing up in a farming community where the land required attention or it would not yield. Harvests were long and in the times when her father was away he would often collect small gifts to bring to his wife and daughter. A shiny stone, a piece of obsidian glass, tiny wooden carvings. What some would consider pieces of junk or rubble, she often thought unique in that they always came with a story. A piece of dark glass pulled from the heart of a foul Eryien prince, the wooden carving of a mare a talisman to ward off nightmares and carry the dreamer out to lands of milk and honey, a stone skipped at a lake with her first love.  Though over the years she understood that these were stories told to children they began to signify more to her. Every small gift is collected and locked away in a box where no one could take it away.

  • 3. Passion in all its forms- Life is about living. Blood are a passionate sort often slipping into extreme degrees of emotion. A tryst can feel like a love affair, anger can rush over. Malakay has learned to find beauty in the light carefree joys as well as the fires that stoke anger. It excites her to see an artist pouring over their paints as much as a warrior beating his chest before charging into battle. She finds interest in those willing to sacrifice for the things they yearn for, ambition, love, sex or rage. Passion is a poison as much as it is a cure.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Authority- Though she will tolerate it, Malakay does not enjoy working beneath others. As a Black Widow, she wants nothing more than to be her own boss and make her own rules. This was especially difficult to overcome in her time within the Eyrien court and got her into trouble more than once.

  • 2. Being underestimated.- She's small, she's dainty, but she knows her own strength. When people underestimate her she has a tendency to up the stakes and prove them wrong.

  • 3. The Exchange- These people are often violent, underhanded and will stab anyone in the back, this includes friend and foe alike. Malakay finds this is a rebellion gone wrong and views them as mercenaries and little more than a business who gain power in profit than a source of any significant change. Even though she will admit they have done much to aid refugees and have brought about some good their reasons for doing so are often financial.

    Fears:

  • 1. Fading into obscurity- Malakay wants to make a mark. It does not have to be a grand legacy, but something, anything that will set her apart from the farm girl she was raised to be. While this makes her ambitious it also sets her back as she's constantly second guessing her talents and making her insecure about her future.

  • 2. Oppression- Nothing galls Malakay more than the thought of being beholden to anyone. She has seen what its done to her father Hilde and his best friend. The  Eyrien’s oppressive ways left its mark on every man, woman and child in Rihland. Even now they still feel it. Malakay is no exception and the idea that Kalvar could turn back to the old days, especially as he has the power to do so, frightens her.

  • 3. Abandonment- People die. They can also simply walk away. Both are painful. Malakay has seen and felt the effects of bad choices.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Mind Heal- The Blood’s connection to the darkness is both fragile and profound. Some have the ability to stretch into deeper pools and in those times can cause fracture their minds in the Darkness. Even the slightest injury can be to that fragile balance. Malakay showed a strong ability at locating, and diagnosing injury or illness in the affected mind. She can treat and in many cases completely heal the affected. Though she also has the ability to do harm and break someone’s chalice by altering sections of the mind she chooses not to unless extreme circumstance dictates.

  • 2. Delivery Webs- Nimble fingers and acute focus has primed Malakay for crafting these webs. In such that she can create them faster and make them more durable than most. She is precise and refuses to do anything if she can't do it well. As such Malakay has perfected a way of timing each delivery web so it unravels at nearly the exact moment she needs it.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Vision Web- If she could just see into the Twisted Kingdom better she would be overjoyed. It would mean being able to look onto loved ones when they were away, or seek out answers to so many questions. As such her sense of direction has never been good. Her inability to navigate makes her hesitant to wander off to places she might not return from. Fearing she will lose herself in the Twisted Kingdom, Malakay never practiced enough  and her confidence has suffered for it. While she can tap into the power like most Black Widows, there are only surface visions that are vague at best.Who wanted to see the future anyways?

  • 2. Power Bolt- Malakay hasn't really had to defend herself very much. She has been very fortunate that she has only been threatened on a few occasions. In those cases there were other options within her arsenal. Malakay’s focus for the most part has been on stitching the mind and avoiding danger that so she isn't as comfortable in this craft.

    Life Story

    Family:
Father:  Hilde Verrisson, Blood  (b. 137 pp)
Mother: Emrit Masondottir, Priestess White - Tiger Eye (136 pp)
Siblings: Godum Hildeson- Warlord Prince (b. 160 pp) Opal - Red  **ADOPTABLE**

    History:
Malakay or “Mal” as her family calls her was born the youngest of two on her family's farm in Svendai. The land was beautiful as it was plentiful.  Her Father Hilde Verrison was Jewel-less Blood who worked at the Village court as a guard with his long time friend and mentor Leif Gunthersson. Though they hated the job, the two were so close that they brought their families together to tend the soil and work communally on daily duties. Their devotion to one another never came to question and worked alongside one another as brothers more than friends.

Emerit Masondottir, her mother was a kind woman. A Priestess at the village temple, she maintained the grounds, made offerings and supported the community during various ceremonies.  A devout Priestess, she felt all children, Landen and Blood alike were gifts from the All-Mother and should be nurtured and protected. In so she embraced her own children as well as those of Leif and his wife Gilda (Tormund, Vult and Anya). She is kind, often a little too lenient but was sure to instill much of the faith in her kids as possible.

Rambunctious as a child, and despite the fact that she was skinny and delicate, without the greatest constitution, Malakay spent her days running after the boys, including her other brother Godum who took no small amount of pleasure in teasing her to the point of challenge. The result of this was a tougher skin, as well as several scrapes, and even a broken arm which she had to be rushed to a healer for. Luckily Vult, the youngest son of their neighbor was there and called for help in the form of his brother, fearing they would get in trouble for her injury.  Stubborn to a fault the incident did not keep Malakay from facing each challenge and in the end surprising her brother many a times for her ability to conquer through just sheer force of will.

Anya, the third of the Leif’s children,  was only three years younger and the two girls were steadfast friends. Though after some time, and like most boys do, Godum’s interest in the farm waned, women and brawls taking priority. Disgusted by what she considered to be frivolous and pointless pursuits, Malakay pleaded to her father to see that Godum received proper instruction. Unfortunately this meant he would eventually be inscripted in the court to learn proper protocol from a court prince. Since then their relationship is strained, Godum having difficulty seeing Mal as anything but a little girl in need of protecting.

After leaving the farm to seek out his own Path, Tormund “Giantsblood” Skybane was asked to return on Malakay’s 18th birthday to complete her Virgin Night. He was older and the two, though distanced by age had always shown signs of a bond. Seeing them as an excellent pairing, and perhaps hoping to lure Tormund back home, their family hoped that the union would form sparks that would lead to a flame. Tormund came home and he completed the night by encasing her in tenderness. He was patient thorough, and passionate, leaving a lasting impression on Malakay. What Tormund did not know was that Malakay had casually slipped his name in for months to her mother. Never directly in order to influence her decision over choosing his brother Vult who had shown considerable enthusiasm in courting the girl.
She did not trust anyone more than Tormund, so there simply no better choice.

At the age of 20, her Offering Ceremony quickly approached and in the end she was blessed with an uncut Blood Opal jewel. A party was held in her honor and to her great surprise Tormund was also in attendance. Though she had not seen him much since her Virgin Night, he had visited during harvests to aid his family, and the two had spent their time catching up. Tormund always seemed eager to get back on the road, so she gave him his space. He was surprised to return to find that Malakay had been struck by a growth spurt later in life, the girl turned into a beautiful, confident woman who knew exactly what she wanted.

The reunion was short and bittersweet. In order to hone her abilities she needed to seek tutelage and in order to do so in an Eyrien dominated Rihland, she would have to apply to the court where a member of the Coven of the Hourglass would see to her training. Though working for the Eyriens was distasteful, she found it was a necessary evil if she was to be a part of any real change in the world. Her family was content to have her home, but she felt that she would stagnate and be miserable. Vult proposed marriage just after Tormund’s departure seeing an opportunity and for the first time, her mother and father did not approve. Nor did Malakay who shut him down rather unceremoniously after some salacious commentary made by him came to light. Leaving home was hard but nothing prepared her for the court or the lessons she would learn there.  Malakay showed promise when it came to navigating the mind and spinning sturdy webs. Having a fine tutor the Black Widow in charge of her education honed in on these gifts by giving Malakay ample opportunity to witness some of the atrocities committed by the Prohibitions.

The camps and interrogations were bad enough, but Malakay learned to revile her Black Widow sisters who used their gift to break the chalices of those who were different and socially unaccepted within the Eyriens. Homosexuality was seen as a deviance and often enough in attempting to fix something they did not understand they broke it instead.

Not hiding her displeasure from her mentor, the woman took the opportunity to open Malakay’s world and make it all the more dangerous.  Slowly and carefully she was recruited by the rebellion to aid in undoing some of the wrongs committed by the Eyriens through the prohibitions. The families of men and women who were altered came to them seeking aid. You wander blindly into someone’s mind and change who they are, what they like or who they loved without shattering them.  No longer able to recognize their sons and daughters they turned to Malakay and her mentor.

In the next two years her days were spent in court fulfilling her contract and her nights in rebellion.  Still there was nothing to stymie the flow of patients, and she worked, diligently to lend aid. That being said she had never been altogether altruistic.Selling poisons, and various webs to the rebellion in the process. She could not live on morality and good deeds alone. Visiting home was become more and more infrequent. There was always something missing.

Kalvar crashed down on the Eyriens like lightning, changing Rihland in ways that at first they could not fathom. Freedom had been something yearned for and seeing it before them the Rihlanders hesitated to take their first steps forward. Malakay waited at the court, halls empty of Eyriens who had fled the Black Jeweled half breed. Suddenly there was no one. They were on their own.  Since then Malakay has doubled her efforts with The Reclaimers, charging families only in cases where mental illness must be mended. Though The Reclaimers show interest Malakay can't help but compare them to the Exchange, before their pockets became heavy. Unsure what to make of Kalvar especially since he has lifted some of the prohibitions but maintained the ban on homosexuality as well as assigning Queens to the districts while securing his rule. Time will only tell if this man leans into his Eyrien nature. In the meantime, Malakay finds herself uneasy in this continued role and aspiring to seek out new avenues but before doing so, she will need to return home.

Character in Play: Dusk had fallen, yawning into the night and yet she had not emerged from the ceremony. Malakay felt each passing second, enduring the hours as it stretched on with just a touch of apprehension. Her offering? A small wooden carving, gifted as a child from a boy on the eve of the harvest moon. It was perhaps the most perfect day in memory and she offered the momento of her innocence. It held a significance that she only realized when faced with parting with it.  Would the Darkness bless her? Or would she emerge to greet her loved ones with no more than her Birthright? That was ludicrous of course, but the longer the ceremony took, the more those fears crept on her like ivy, fragile but pervasive.  The flame of torchlight flickered against the walls, filling the cavern with light and casting uneven shadow on the blade the rested on the alter. Just moments ago her flesh split against its keen caress, blood welling into her palm as it tipped into the goblet of rich liquid. Then to her lips, staining them burgandy.

The tang of iron and bitterness of tannins filled her throat.  The Priestess assigned to her ceremony smiled knowingly and set to clean the blade. A white linen bandage wrapped around her small hand and the base of her thumb. The skin beneath throbbing mildly with pain. Had she not been so caught up in completing the ceremony she might have given it more attention. But pain as with boredom and indecision dragged on on when given too much attention. When the Darkness did speak, it did so resoundly with the All-Mother’s blessing.  An uncut blood opal, the color of dusk in the fall, of amber, a touch of flame encased within. A dark jewel, though not the most imposing it was still hers, had ever only been hers, uncut, untouched and pure.

The Priestess paused just outside within the mouth of the cave and indicated for her to approach with a sweep of her arm. Night had fallen and yet she could see the glow of witchfire and hear the music of children giggling at the display. She was unsure of how long they waited, an eternity by her estimation. Cupping the jewel against her chest and squeezed, comforted by its solidity. After one last glance she slipped it into the silver locket and emerged from her Offering.

True to Rihlander form the first to see her emerge sounded the alarm and from there into a loud ruckus. Half drowning out the sound of the Priestesses voice as she announced her. Their people did nothing subtly, quietly or half assed. Family surrounded them from all over Markoth. The first to approach was her father Hilde Dogun, followed by her Mother Emilet. The young woman disappearing against their bodies as they embraced....
