The Basics

Character Name: Oskar Sauer
Nicknames: Oz. Only his family calls him Oskar, and only because he can’t break them of it. Outside of Rihland, he’s known as Jacobi.
Age and Birth Year: 37 (b. 157 AP)
Race: Short-lived (Rihlander)
Caste: Warlord Prince
Birth Territory: Rihland
Home Territory: Rihland

Birthright Jewel: uncut Opal
Offering Jewel: uncut Broken Sapphire

Role: Smuggler
Faction: The Exchange
Appearance

Play By: Dominic Cooper
Distinguishing Features: Oz is clean-shaven maybe once per week, and spends the rest of the time sporting various degrees of stubble. He has a number of tattoos, some of which can be seen on his forearms when his sleeves are pushed up.

Personality

Personality:
Oz is a very busy guy, but he likes it that way. An enterprising individual since his youth, he’s got operations running in multiple territories now, and tends to them each personally in varying degrees. He’s highly energetic, though his is a more subtle sort of energy that manifests in the intensity of his glances and the speed at which his mind works. If his body was left to his own devices it’d showcase a few different impatient ticks such as tapping of his fingers and feet, but he’s trained himself over the years to suppress these things. He prefers to come across as unbothered and easy-going, and most of the time he succeeds. He’s quick to smile, quick to flirt, quick to crack a joke at a comrade. He’s as quick as the average Warlord Prince to shift to less light-hearted things as well, but he’s not usually one to hold grudges or let a careless turn of phrase fully ruin an otherwise pleasant evening.

As easily as he lets some matters go, though, there are some things that Oz intentionally carries with him. Beneath the roguish facade there is a gravity to him that often colors his thoughts darkly. This comes through in the depth of his brooding on occasion, and the un-laughing severity of his ruts when they grip him. No matter how much he may appear to live in the moment, the past means something to him, and he carries it with him in a very real sense. The tattoos he commissions to mark noteworthy events in his life are only the most visible representation of this. He keeps his broken Sapphire with him always, as a reminder to himself in a dual sense. Not only does it remind him that tomorrow’s not guaranteed, but he takes courage from the knowledge that he can survive great loss and still thrive. He’s in no hurry to test that again - he guards his remaining Jewel and his choices well - but he believes in his own strength, and sees his lost Jewel as another scar that tells a story.

He tempers this gravity in true Rihlander fashion: celebratory drinking and physical exertion. Oz works hard and plays hard, both because it’s just in his nature and because it helps to burn off some of the excess aggression for which Warlord Princes are famous. He’s fairly well a glutton when it comes to sex and good drink, and when he can’t get back home to break his back a little on the farm, he looks for opportunities to help with the loading and unloading of shipments that are constantly going and coming.

Likes:
  • Beating the Odds. Oz loves feeling more clever than the next guy. He says he loves gambling, but really he only enjoys it if he’s studied the situation enough to be able to game the odds. Whether it’s an actual betting game or a crazy plan that doesn’t look like it oughta work but does, there are few things he loves more than pulling off the improbable.
  • Compartmentalizing. Life for Oz is broken up into distinct factions, and he likes it that way. He’s a different man depending on where he is and what company he’s keeping, whether that’s his family, his Exchange contacts, or his Little Terreillian interests. He likes keeping the three as separate as he can, because they each require a different sort of finesse to properly manage.
  • Physical Exertion. At the end of the day, Oz is still a Warlord Prince. This is, perhaps, why he still spends as much time with his family as he does, despite the much more cosmopolitan lifestyle he leads elsewhere. There are always labors to be found on the farm, ways for Oz to help support his family while burning off some of the extra aggression and energy inherent to his caste.

Dislikes:
  • Boredom. It’s very possible that Oz was the inspiration for the proverb: Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. He is a highly energetic man, and while this doesn’t always manifest in a physical sense, it is rare that his mind ever really stops without the aid of some kind of drug. Given too much time to delve into his own thoughts, Oz often takes himself down a distressing mental path, and so he consciously tries to keep either his mind or his body busy most of the time.
  • Reclaimer Fanatics. Look. He gets it, guys. He even agrees with you. Rihland for the Rihlanders, and all that. But the truth of the matter is that there is a Black Jewel sitting in Ebon Varos now, and that’s not likely to change soon. You can spend your life angry about it or you can accept reality and make the best of it. In the meantime, let’s try to not call down THE WRATH on the rest of us, okay?
  • The Prohibitions. Though it can’t be said that Oz is a saint by any means, he’s not one of those Rihlanders who secretly loves the Prohibitions because they make him money. He does love the money, but he’d give it all up in a heartbeat - gladly - if the Prohibitions were abolished. He sees them as entirely unnecessary, and an arrogant attempt by over-controlling people to enforce their morals on the rest of the world.

Fears:
  • Harming His Family. Some of the work Oz does is dangerous, not only in the physical sense, but also in how it would affect his family if he was caught. His little sister in particular serves in the Territory Court under the Black Jeweled Prince who supports the Prohibitions. Oz fears one day bringing shame or harm to her or to the rest of his family if he’s found out to be a member of the Exchange.
  • Kalvar’s Wrath. A separate matter from the potential political ramifications of being personally discovered as part of the Exchange, Oz also has reason to fear Kalvar’s wholesale slaughter of any groups he suspects of being involved. The Exchange is intentionally set up to make it difficult to assault any one group of participants, but it’s not an impossible thing. After what happened to Ebon Rih and the Jhinka, Oz is subject the occasional nightmare about the wrath of the Black wiping out both him and all of his associates some fateful day.
  • Being “Rehabilitated”. Kalvar abolished the corrective villages to which dissidents were sent under the Eyrien rule. When he did, survivors returned to their homes, and Oz got an up-close look at the fallout from the “corrective” treatment a childhood friend of his received while there. Erik is no longer Erik, but a shell of the man he used to be. It is the worst fate Oz can imagine for himself, to be remade into one of these walking dead, his passions obliterated by Widow Craft.

Craft Strengths:
  • Warming/Cooling Spells. Temperature plays a critical role in the brewing of spirits. Bootlegging is where Oz first began practicing very finite control over heating and cooling spells, and he has excelled at this type of Craft since.
  • Seduction Craft. Oz is a wheeler and a dealer, and deals always go a little more favorably if the person you’re dealing with is hoping to bed you later. While his Craft isn’t any more potent than the next guy, he’s honed his to be particularly subtle, so that most people don’t notice he’s using it at all.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Incite Rage. Though Oz is very much a Warlord Prince, he’s spent a good part of his life making sure that bullheaded aggressiveness doesn’t rule him. Trying to bring this out in others breaks his control over his own temper, and is just as likely to cause him to rage as anyone else.
  • Combat Craft. Oz’s not afraid of a fight, but he’s never served in an army or a court, and has never had formal training to enable him to enhance his fights with Craft. Any ruckus he gets into is going to be strictly with his mundane fists.

History:
Ylva Sauer was fond of saying that when the All-Mother came to Oz’s particular whorl in the tree of life, she had a moment of fancy with her carving knife. He was not like his brothers and sisters, in more than just the high caste that the family hadn’t seen in a couple of generations. She used to say that he had the sun itself had been woven into his blood, and that was why he burned so brightly, so fiercely. While that may have seemed true in Oz’s younger years, age eventually tempered that youthful joy. Oz still burns, but it is a darker, less obvious thing now.

His young life was a common one for a Rihlander. He worked on his family’s farm from a young age, and learned to value hard work and consistency. A rebellious stage hit him the same as it did many of his peers; at around twelve years old he began experimenting with innocent subversions to the law of the land. He’d sneak away to sample bootleg alcohol with his friends on occasion, and eventually experimented a little with the drugs they could get their hands on. Red Moon houses, legal or not, were an essential part of a young Warlord Prince’s life. He began brewing and selling his own bootleg to pay for his trips to the houses around age fifteen. He kept these activities from his family. Though at the time the enforcement of the Prohibitions was hit-and-miss at best, there were still potential punishments out there, and he knew his family would likely disapprove of his breaking the law.

By the time of his Offering, Oz was nearly living two separate lives. From dawn to afternoon he was the family’s farmhand, and from afternoon to dawn he nurtured his bootleg business and celebrated life in just about every illegal way possible. His cousin Erik was his partner in crime for most efforts, as the two enjoyed many of the same pursuits. Though there were the occasional slip-ups (sometimes, a man has to go through the process of TRYING to muck out horse stalls on zero sleep the night after a bender before he really grasps the limits of his own body), for the most part his family believed that he and his friends disappeared each night for mostly harmless fun, and didn’t ask many questions. Some suspected that he and Erik were brewing alcohol, but many Rihlanders quietly did that in defiance of the Prohibitions, and there seemed to rarely ever be fallout from them doing so.

The world changed for Oz when an Eyrien patrol that was particularly bored or over-eager discovered and raided a Red Moon house Oz and Erik happened to be patronizing. Oz got out with some of the workers and other patrons in tow, but Erik and some of the others did not. Those who survived capture were sent off to the Territory’s rehabilitative villages, Erik included. It was the last Oz saw of his best friend for some time. Shortly after, the hidden still where the men had brewed their alcohol for years was discovered and destroyed. Though Oz was lucky enough to have not been there at the time, the explosion and subsequent fire caused by the place’s sacking took the lives of a few valued friends. Reeling now and feeling as though everything he touched turned to ash, Oz took up with a fellow bootlegger who made regular runs into Little Terreille in defiance of the controlled borders. He eventually branched off into his own outfit, more tuned towards facilitating the movement of the products of others across territory lines rather than creating his own product. His congeniality and quick wit made him a good number of friends in Little Terreille, and to this day he spends as much time there as he does in Rihland.

Two years ago, Kalvar Elbremov killed the majority of the Eyriens in Rihland and leveled the mighty Ebon Rih. Oz had the misfortune of being at Ebon Rih on that fateful day. He’d been scaling his way down the mountain, having snuck out a lover of his who’d been taken prisoner there, when Kalvar’s wrath brought the whole thing down. Oz very nearly died, and both his lover and his Offering were sundered in that nightmarish event. He crawled free of the wreckage and returned home to heal.

Eventually, Kalvar abolished the rehabilitative villages the Eyriens had maintained, and sent their inhabitants home. Erik and some other old friends returned, but many of them - Erik included - were no longer themselves. Oz isn’t sure precisely what happened in the village to erase so much of Erik’s personality and make him the fragile, haunted man he is now, but he’s angry about it. Erik has fits of being unable to distinguish reality from fantasy, and when he gets that way he often frightens himself into hysteria. Oz has found that certain drugs help keep Erik’s demons at bay while allowing him to function, and so he’s tuned his work to include keeping a steady supply of those drugs to his cousin, and to those like him who have suffered unknown trauma under the hands of the “rehabilitating” Eyriens.

Character in Play:
Half-conscious, Oz knew something was wrong. Off, in a weird way. Something intangible but critical, something like a warning siren pitched just higher on the spectrum than he could hear. He was disoriented, and it took him a few seconds to understand where he was, to remember what’d happened. The darkness surrounding him was broken rock - no, broken mountain. He came awake again suddenly, gasped in panic, tried to push Craft out in a shield around himself and found it already there. His Opal wavered in his distracted state, and he reached for his Sapphire to reinforce it. The sensation was rather like stepping down on a foot that he hadn’t realized had fallen asleep. There was nothing there where he knew there ought to be something. Confused, still, he pushed towards the tiny cracks of light he could see. They felt like they were below him, but there was darkness in the other direction. He looked. Shavar’s wrist was there, curled at an odd angle, the rest of her arm swallowed up by more rock.

He called her name but no voice came from his mouth. Dust coated his throat and he heaved, coughed, choked. He grabbed her, flared his Craft out to knock loose the rocks around her, around himself. Gravel and silt and… other things rained down around the outside of his shield as he dragged the both of them from the rubble. It took a small lifetime, but eventually the debris gave way to emptiness, to open air. Dust billowed out for some distance like a heavy fog still, but Oz paid it no mind and turned to tend to Shavar. He found the woman quite dead, and the shroud of denial finally began to part, in his mind. It replayed what he’d seen, what he’d felt. The pile of rubble atop which he sat shifted again, and Oz shouted, startled, reminded too keenly of how it’d felt to have the entire mountain shake apart under his hands. He needed to move, he told himself. His Jewels were low. His Opal was whining and his Sapphire was so depleted that he couldn’t even feel it at the moment. He needed to get out of the fog of choking so that he could drop his shields and let his Jewels rest, and he needed… he needed to get away from here. He gathered up Shavar, some part of his mind stubbornly refusing to believe there was no hope for her, and pulled her with him out of the remains of Ebon Rih.
