Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Where Rihlanders are known for their open and emotive personalities, Mia is relatively reserved and quiet.  She is observant, watching and learning before making her own moves or steps.  Some might see this as a weakness, she views it as years of cautious practice in the eyes of a controlling overseer.  Some might see her as frigid and standoffish, but those are the carefully laid defenses that she has spent her life putting into place as a matter of survival.

Over all she is a good Queen, concerned about the welfare and prosperity of her people and by her people she means the Rihlanders.  She has a hard time seeing the Eyriens as her people, as they had been the cause of pain and misery throughout the long history of their land.  She wants to believe that not all Eyriens seek to restore the years of servitude and enslavement that had existed when their race held the reins of power but she is very well aware that only the imposing power of Kalvar’s Black keeps them at bay.

Mia is a woman who denies herself much in the way of personal comfort and pleasure, if only to keep those weaknesses to those who would use them against her a secret.  She has taken no long term lovers, seeking only hurried couplings to resolve physical needs in the shadows of moonless nights and has no children, though she craves the love of a family that she once knew as a child.   Before Kalvar, she could never dream of allowing herself these things if only to know they would be tools to be used against her or to hold her into compliance, and how could she bring children into a world where their future was one of enslavement.

Mia feels at odds with her court, not bonding with any of them and not feeling that are truly hers.  They all chose to serve, once Kalvar placed her on the Province seat, and they were all very capable and loyal men who supported her in all her decisions on how to proceed in this new world, but there was something lacking that bothered her.

This is probably due to her continued feelings of inadequacy of power.  She had never seen her jewels as lacking as a child, mostly because of her jeweless family and how she never saw them as anything weak or useless.  After being fostered off to the Eyrien court, where the jewels were plentiful and much darker than her White did she ever begin to see herself as weak or lacking.  Coming from her Offering with a Tiger Eye and not even a full descent earned her sneers and mocking from everyone at the court, including the other two Queens who had been forced there as well.   She had been the most surprised of all of them when Kalvar gave her the Province seat after he destroyed the established Eyrien courts and allowed her to form her own.   She half expected him to come to his senses any day now, find a darker and more powerful jeweled Queen to replace her and remove her from power with the flick of his finger.

These are her own feelings though, and Mia pushes through each day resolve to continue to the best she can with the power she was given.  She uses the strength of the men in her circle to make up for her lack of personal power, assigning them to tasks and roles best suited to their personalities and personal experiences.

Likes:
  • Puzzles - Mia loves a good brain teaser, whether mentally or physically, she enjoys assembling the broken into something that is unified and works.  While some queens enjoy reading, or some sort of embroidery (or at least that was her experience before), Mia collects puzzles, particularly those of pictures that she can spend hours assembling and then framing for magnificent visuals that she hangs up in her residence.  The smaller and more complicated the better.
  • Working the land - despite the fact that it was a requirement of her very essence, Mia finds peace when her hands are filled with soil and her heart thrums with the beat of the earth beneath her.  It was the only thing being under the yoke and control of the Eyriens before that made the experience bearable.
  • Prohibitions - Despite the fact that it was a means to control the Rihlanders, Mia never really minded the Prohibitions.  In a strange way it kept people focused on what needed to be done instead of indulging in vices and distractions that only hurt the community as a whole.  She was pleased to see that Kalvar chose to continue with this tradition for the most part though she has no desire to make windows into men’s souls and doesn’t condone the persecution and hunt for offenders, so long as they manage to keep their private matters private.

    Dislikes:
  • Being pushed around by darker jewels - She’s a Queen damnit, light jeweled or not and in full control of her abilities, trained and chosen to lead.  She hates anyone, male or female, who think she is a weak, pliable pawn because she doesn’t sit deep in the Abyss.  She doesn’t hold these thoughts against Kalvar, he chose her to take the Province seat so obviously he had some faith in her abilities, but she hears the whispers and talk amongst those who come to her court, whispers that are passed along by her network of servants who she makes sure are paid well for information about subversion within her own walls.
  • Cold climates- After Kalvar came to power and it was rumored he was going to pick Queen’s to rule the provinces on his behalf, Mia never thought she was a candidate who would gain the eye of a Black jeweled ….well anything.  When she was named as one of the final three contenders, she hoped to be remain in Belaya instead of being sent to the cold of Vyrkov.  It wasn’t a matter of being cold, but she loved the feel of soft earth beneath her feet, not hard and frozen.  Warmth and warm climates meant the growth of the land in the sun, not the cold of hard earth and the sleep of the flora.
  • Not having a bonded male - even though she knows in her heart there’s no truth to her insecurities, not having a male that has yet to bond to her only adds to her feelings of inadequacies.  Even the worst of the Eryrien Queens that she was forced to serve under had at least one male bound to their soul, and she has only had her court for a short time but still it irks her.  She is hardworking, strong in her own way and knows her Protocol and craft, why shouldn’t she have one of those special men in her court?

    Fears:

  • Eyrien rebellion uprising in Belaya - It’s bad enough that the Eyriens who ran from Kalvar had to come to her Province, and there were some (many) who questioned Kalvar putting her in charge of the Province that held such a constant threat within its borders.   There were times that she wondered why Kalvar allowed them to survive.  He had wiped out the Jhinka threat in the north, why would he allow the Eryiens to remain within his borders.  She wasn’t sure if she should be flattered that he seemed to place the confidence in her people and her court to keep them at bay, or fear being unable to live up to that expectation.
  • Being seen as never enough -  Mia is an overachiever, always striving to do more, work harder, sleep less, push herself to the brink of exhaustion and beyond if only to prove herself as capable and dedicated as any Queen with more power.  She fears that this great responsibility will be stolen away from her simply because she was unable to prove herself at the altar of the Darkness to be deserving.
  • Fierce windstorms - When the storms come roaring out of the mountains, dark and fierce, echoing their power and rage in the dark of the night, it sounds like a thousand Eyrien wings beating at her rooftop and for a moment she’s a frightened child again, surrounded by the very creatures who stole her from her family and the life she was supposed to have.  Those are the nights that she would seek out company, any company, to drown out the nightmares.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Queen’s Gift - She was a Queen, and in the eyes of the Eyriens who controlled her district and the Queen who ruled them, she was nothing more useful than to control the males who saw her as theirs and to nurture the land with her craft and blood.  The latter part was a key component in her training and while some might only be moderately successful with this training, Mia excelled.  For being the lightest jeweled Queen fostered in the court, she used all her the power in her White and then Tiger Eye to give to the land in her care and it loved her in return, flourishing under her hand and love.
  • Emotional Projection - People see you as they want to see you, and if they see you as a threat they will target you more.  Her jewels were never cause for alarm or worry amongst the other Queens at Farian’s court, but it didn’t hurt to push forward the image of compliance and innocuity.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Land sense - Despite her ties to the land and the connection she feels through her Queen’s Gift, the art of delving into the land - to sensing out the things hidden beneath its surface was never a talent that Mia could grasp.  Oh, she could sense strongly when the land cried out for the nutrients her jewels and blood could give it, but she could never do as other Queens were used for, seeking out deposits of ores and other buried things.
  • Compulsion craft - Mia was forced into too much in her life, she was never able to stomach the idea of forcing someone against their better will into any action.  She already feels like she is tiptoeing along that line by the use of emotional projection.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Kelara Kollen, witch Yellow-Rose (AP 122)
Father:  Guvar Weimar, Blood male (AP 118)
Siblings: Ivan Kollen, Blood male (AP 150)
Henry Kollen, Warlord. Tiger Eye - Purple Dusk (AP 153)

    History:

Had she been a Queen born in another territory, Mia might have turned out to be a very different woman. She would have had proper tutelage under a ruling Queen, learned how to run a court and control her males and in time would have been given lands to rule and care for.  As it was, born under the yoke of the Eyriens, she was born into a destiny to be little more than the sum of her craft for the land, to nurture the ground and provide for a richer harvest that would be toiled by her fellow Rihlanders with little given in return for their efforts.

When Mia was born, her parents knew immediately that her fate was sealed as soon as the scent of a Queen became apparent.  Well aware of what happened to Rihlander Queens, they began preparing her for the day that she would be forced into service of the Eyriens.  Having seen first hand the consequences of rebellious Queens who refused to bow to the will of the Eyrien Princes and Queens, her parents raised her to be cautious and careful, to never trust anyone and to be always observant and patient - no matter the trials and tribulations.

It was advice well received and the young Queen went to her Birthright with a heavy heart as she saw the gathered Eyrien guards who waited for her to emerge with her jewel.  When she returned, she heard their snicker of amusement at what they viewed as a pathetically low ranking jewel but to Mia, it was the most beautiful stone.  Her father and her brother didn’t have a jewel so she saw her ability to even hold one as a major accomplishment.  It was the last time she felt so proud of her light jewel.

The Eyrien guards took her far from her family, to the district Queen of Kondyor where she was placed to work training in Craft that would benefit the land and the Eyriens.  There were two other young Queens fostered for this training from other districts, also torn from their families and isolated with no one to rely upon than the very people who subjugated them.  Mia followed the instruction of her parents and learned the art of complacency, silent protest and meeks submission.  She was careful to be intently studious in her craft lessons and schooled herself to control her emotions and never never to expose her personal thoughts and views.

She managed to endear herself somewhat to the Eyrien Queen, who began keeping her closer than the other Queens, often having her sit in on meetings and council discussions.  Never for her input, but almost as a pet to keep her company.  Mia didn’t mind, it gave her the rare opportunity to see up close and first hand the delicate and complicated dance that was required of a Queen to rule a complete court and rule well.  As the years went on and Mia became an adult with an Offering jewel of her own, she had worked her way into a position of trust, given small tasks and even at times allowed to advise and assist with matters relating to other Rihlanders.  It wasn’t ruling, not truly, but it was an education that most Queens would not have been allowed under the rules of the Eyrien control.

When Kalvar had descended on Ebon Varos, Mia had watched as the court exploded under the force of his raw power, trembling and terrified as everyone around her perished in the waves of Black rage.  She had been surprised to have survived, even more so that when the dust settled and the ash cleared that she was called before Kalvar, certain that he would be another dark overlord.  Instead, she found him a puzzle, which intrigued her.  Here was a man who leveled the establishment of power in the realm but didn’t seem to wish to place himself into that vacuum of power.  He created a council of Queens, and gave her the Province in which she had previously served and allowed her to form a court as she saw fit, with men who wished to serve under her.

He was still a puzzle, even two years later, and there were still many things that Mia was learning to adapt and accept in this new world.  She had not been pleased to learn that the remaining Eyrien forces who had escaped Kalvar’s original wrath had established themselves in a camp high in the mountains of the Kondyor district and had reported their presence to Kalvar but they had been strangely quiet and withdrawn.   Perhaps the knowledge of what would occur should they rise up against him held them at bay.   Mia watched the horizon with a worried eye and hoped she would never have to see that wrathful winged army descend on what had become HER land.

    Character in Play:

Mia stood on the balcony of her residence, facing the setting sun in the horizon.  The land was golden around her, echoing the bright hues of color that marked the ending of another day, days which had been growing slowly shorter and shorter.   Her escort had insisted she pull a shawl around her thin shoulders and she had obliged, crossing her arms around her stomach to pull the cloth tight around her back.

“Are you certain?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady and strong despite the tremor of terror that echoed in her chest.

“Yes Lady, we’ve had several reports from a number of  villages and also some of the herders who take their flocks to the higher grazing grounds.”

Mia frowned, squinting her eyes as she turned her head, facing south now as if she could somehow spy the long distance that separated her home from theirs.  Was it her imagination, or could she see dark specks circling in the sky above the snow covered peaks.  Birds or worse?  She rubbed a hand across her eyes wearily before glancing slightly over her shoulder at her escort so he knew she addressed him.  “We should send word to Prince Kalvar.  He should be made aware of this possible threat.   Make sure to include the fact that our information is coming from sightings and not from any direct confrontations.  I don’t want to draw his ire or his strength down on us, just yet.  If he chooses to do so, I certainly can’t stop him, but as Prince of the Territory, he should know that a possible threat still remains.”

She pulled her shawl up higher on her shoulders, thinking for a long moment, long enough that the sun was barely a thin sliver of light over the distant hills before she spoke again.  Her voice was resigned, soft but surprisingly not weak despite the ache and chill she felt in her bones.

“Have my Steward draft a missive to be delivered to this camp of Eyriens.  Tell him to keep it polite and diplomatic.  Extend my personal invitation to meet with their leader in the hopes of reaching and keeping a peaceful accord between our two peoples, with the intent of finding a mutually beneficial arrangement for the long term future.” She didn’t need to see him to sense his nod of assent before he hurried off, leaving her staring into the growing twilight.

“May the Darkness have mercy on us,” she said softly, “and let war remain a long long time away.”
