    Race:  ½ Eyrien, ½ Tacean

    Birth Territory: Askavi, Terreille
    Home Territory: Rihland, Kaeleer

    Faction:

    Appearance

    Play By: Donnie Yen
Distinguishing Features: Kalvar is a highly unusual specimen within the Territory he rules. He holds some of the facial features of his Tacean father, including the barest wisps of facial hair. The golden skin and eyes of his mother, as well as the broad and powerful black wings of an Eyrien, mark him as one who bears Long Lived blood. He is instantly recognizable by appearance alone within the Territory, for good or ill.

    Personality

    Personality:
Kalvar would tell you he is not a complicated man. He is outwardly reserved, keeping mostly to himself whenever possible and seeming to constantly be focused on his own thoughts. He does not emote often, though his children have known him to smile in their presence. Laughter is even rarer. Though he does have a sense of humor, it’s extremely dry and life as of late has given him few moments fitting to joke.

Much of that is because Kalvar is a too-tightly-coiled spring. He holds a great deal of passion in his heart, as both of his wives and those who fought in the field could tell you. But much of that is leashed and bound due to the discipline of centuries of training in the War Camps and the conditioning to use his passion as a weapon. He only unsheathes it when he intends to use it.

To his children he is a stern but loving father. He spent their formative years reading to them at night, playing games with them, and cooking their meals with them. Nonetheless he also instilled in them a deep understanding of responsibility and at times pushed them to their limit, if only because he wanted them to achieve their maximum potential. Having been both a soldier and a farmer he has a great love for physical labor, as he believes it is honest and builds character. He has little love or capability for politics and as a rule finds lying distasteful.

He is a man of short words and direct language and as such is poorly suited to soothing the egos of others. His terseness is often taken as rudeness or simply a curt attitude. While he means no actual offense most of the time, he also does not take great effort to be polite.

Recent events have instilled in him a sense of doubt he has never carried before. He feels the weight of his great power and his greater responsibility and as such does what he believes is moral and just. That is a morality colored by being a member of the Blood, of course, where Cost and Price is always the crux of any sort of negotiation. But nonetheless he is not a cruel or hateful man. The hatred he has earned from Rihlander and Eyrien both trouble him, as he is uncertain of how to strike a balance between the two.

As such he has become even more isolated than he used to be, and outside of speaking to his family or others at Court functions he recuses himself in his mountain fortress to painting or flying alone along the ranges of the land once known as Askavi.

    Likes:
    • Discipline: It is easy to give into temptation, but it shows the true sign of a powerful soul to remain firm in one’s beliefs and organization. Kalvar grew up with the regimented thought of the Askavi War Camps and was a soldier for most of his life. As a father he was a strict figure (though not authoritarian). While he has had recent breaches of self-discipline, he highly prefers order to chaos. He even sets about writing out his daily planner and attempts to stick to it to the letter.

    • Prayer: Kalvar is deeply spiritual. Though he is no Priest he will lead his family in prayer to the Darkness before each meal and will spend hours in meditation reflecting on the will of Mother Night and her plan for him. He is very dutiful in observing any and all religious rites and consults the High Priestess on many worldly matters; leaning heavily on her advice.

    • Cooking: He has a flair for it, and was the cook in the house for both his marriages. He takes great pains to learn different recipes and during his years traveling the Realms he tried many different meals. It is the only thing that tempts him to lift the Prohobitions: The chance to get his hands on the spices and foods of different Territories.

    Dislikes:
    • Eyriens: Kal has always been an outsider, even when he was a young man in the War Camps. While there’s part of being an Eyrien he likes (the long life, the wings), much of the culture and the outlook of other Eyriens is bothersome to him. The years apart after his exile made his latent distaste for them grow. But more than that, they took his Alyona from him, and it is because of that he will always hate them, down deep.

    • Ungrateful Rihlanders: Kal just can’t understand why there are Rihlanders that hate him. He’s done more for them than anyone else has in almost two thousand years. The Exchange and the Reclaimers constantly earn his ire and his fury because he sees himself as a benevolent and good man, doing what’s right for his wife’s people. Why can’t they just get it that he’s the good guy!?

    • His own lack of charisma: It is a constant frustration to Kal that he doesn’t seem to know the right thing to say in almost any situation. It’s not that he’s a stuttering idiot. He just lacks the smooth charm that most males of his Caste enjoy. He is aggravated that he cannot convince others to understand his point of view with words, never seeming to convey his point of view properly.
    Fears:
    • The deaths of his children: Kal has already lost both his wives. He loves his children dearly (even if he’s not very good at showing it). But for all of his power he cannot be everywhere at once and he fears that his actions would bring harm or death to his children.

    • Civil War: Kalvar’s efforts so far have been to try to keep peace between the Rihlanders and the remaining Eyriens. But despite everything he’s doing, he finds that is insufficient to turn the tide of racial tensions and long-held grudges. If anything, he seems to be bringing these problems to a boiling point and he scrambles to try and find a way to avert things from exploding into full-scale conflict.

    • Becoming a monster: It’s so easy, isn’t it? All that power to affect and do anything you want. First it’s just making sure that nobody comes on your land. Then it’s avenging your wife’s death. Then it’s wiping out an entire people who threaten the Territory you just took over. But the slide has started, and even Kal is cognisant that it’s becoming easier and easier to justify things to himself. At times he lays in bed and stares into the void, worried that he is losing his grip on morality and that soon enough there won’t be a thing he can’t just excuse away.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Power Bolts: Kalvar’s control over power bolts is so refined he has almost laser-like accuracy and precision. He’s used his bolts to carve stone and hew wood, and also to deadly effect in combat.

    • Telekenetic Craft: Kalvar’s control over telekenetic Craft is so absolute he can affect many more targets and more weight than even his Black might normally allow.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Social Craft and Diplomacy: Despite his Caste, Kalvar is a terrible negotiator. He doesn’t know what to say to soothe egos and tempers. He lacks the social grace to inspire and never received the training to pull the intelligent words to speak out of thin air to smoothe things over with opposite parties. Not a great combination for a Territory Leader.

    • Communication Craft: Kalvar cannot initiate psychic threads, he can only communicate on them if someone opens one to him.

    History:
Hideto no Natsuhana was a trader from Tacea who had a wanderlust as a young man to leave behind the strict roles for the males of the Territory. During his wanderings he met Illuvian Elbremov in Dhemlan, a strong willed and deeply spiritual Priestess. Queen Ranosi, the infamous Red Queen of Askavi, was beginning to prepare her war machine against the whole of Terreille. When Illuvian returned home with a babe in her belly and Hideto as her companion, it was made clear he would not be allowed to go back to Tacea. Though he was looked as an outsider and treated as such, Illuvian’s standing as a Priestess of the Black Forest prevented her husband from being killed or imprisoned as long as he swore to good behavior. Soon Kalvar was born, and to avoid extra ridicule was named in the Eyrien fashion. He grew up hearing of the stories of both his father’s homelands and their myths and the proud heritage of his mother.

While he was growing up he met some discrimination during those proud years of Eyrien superiority. After walking away from the Birthright Ceremony with the Red, however, that all changed. Now it did not matter who Kalvar’s father was. He was Eyrien and a Prince and would descend to at least a Gray. From that day forth he was taken to the War Camps to train and become a weapon for the Red Queen’s army.

When Kalvar was brought to the Offering Ceremony he descended deep, falling as far into the darkness as he was allowed. As he walked away from the temple, Black Jewel in hand, Askavi knew that their march of war would be successful. Kalvar for his part felt eager to not only belong to his people and be accepted as an Eyrien, but to be an important and valued member of the community. His father, an outsider living within the Territory that held him captive, cautioned Kalvar that he was being made into a weapon rather than acknowledged as a man. But Kalvar would hear nothing of it from the Short-Lived man, and he disregarded his father ever after. He left home to receive officer training in the War Camps and looked eager to the day he could lead troops into battle.

His father died some twenty years later, the two had never reconciled. It is an event that bothers him still, especially now with his own short-lived children.

Finally it was time for the Red Queen to unleash her army, some two hundred years after Kalvar began training. He volunteered to be on the front line against Raej and helped to quickly conquer the Territory. He was credited for keeping discipline among his men at all times and assuring that they fought as a unit, rather as individual fighters. His success in the campaign against Raej allowed for a rapid promotion to General and he was hand-picked among several others to lead the Askavi army through the Dark Gate into Kaeleer.

From there, Kalvar helped his people settle into the mountains that would become Askavi, Kaeleer. He used his great jewel strength to help construct the mountain fortresses of Ebon Varos and Ebon Rih. While Tylvian Kalana ruled Askavi, Kaeleer as the Queen of the Territory, Kalvar served as her Master of the Guard and lead the armies of Askavi against the other territories of Kaeleer. While his peer failed in his bid against Dhemlan and the Ebon Gray jeweled Mitra Sa Roya, Kalvar found success through the rest of Kaeleer.

But the war was not going well in Terreille, and Queen Ranosi recalled more than half of their forces from Kaeleer, which neutered much of Kalvar’s forces. Tylvian called back the remaining armies to consolidate Askavi in Kaeleer and prepare for another war. However her efforts were cut short when Mirandian Xurandyr led a rebellion against Tylvian’s rule. Tylvian ordered Kalvar to use his power to kill Mirandian and her people, but the lifetime soldier could not fathom turning his power against his own people. He refused and was cast out of her Court, called a half-breed and a traitor, and was told to never darken her Court again.
Yelivan, Tylvian’s neice, had been a Black Widow who had long been Kalvar’s lover before his dismissal. Believing her aunt had wronged him, she went with Kalvar into exile, marrying him and forming a life among the Rihlanders who were mostly ignored by the two factions of Eyriens. Kalvar found his retreat from the Court life was refreshing, and he offered his services to the Rihlander Courts and their people, though many were wary of accepting him among them given his race and jewels.

Yelivan bore a son, Odinar, their fierce Warlord Prince. While Tylvian and Mirandian continued their war in the mountains the Rihlanders continued living from day to day in relative peace. Kalvar helped assure this, as any Eyriens who threatened to bring their conflict into the Rihlander lands would have to contend with a wrathful Black Jeweled Prince. As Odinar came into adulthood he grew into headstrong Warlord Prince who longed for a court position and a place of glory. He left his father behind to join the Red Queen who had sent Kalvar into exile. The two fought bitterly over the matter, with Odinar calling Kalvar a coward and a traitor. The two would have come to blows had it not been for Yelivan’s intervention. She soothed the rage of her husband and father to her son, but the two would not speak for centuries as Odinar went to serve Tylvian’s Court.

As the decades and centuries went by Kalvar spent more time with the Rihlanders than his own people. He learned the craft of farming and the trade of the work. While Yelivan would still visit her aunt and Odinar, Kalvar had no wish to deal with any of his own people. Time apart from the Eyrien war machine and their culture made him think back to his father often and his situation of being a captive, further separating himself from the culture of his homeland. A listlessness and feeling of depression began to settle into his heart.

When the Purge struck, Kalvar did not resist the Witchstorm. He walked out to his field, willing to accept the end. Yelivan ran out to try and stop him, throwing shields around them both, but the effect of Witch’s magic tore her asunder and left Kalvar unhurt. He questioned the brutal irony of the matter, wondering why Dreams Made Flesh would have given him such a nightmare of having to lose his fierce wife.

As Draekar and Lokevar picked up the pieces of their dead Queens and their armies, Odinar remained loyal to the last parts of the Red Queen’s armies and stayed at Lokevar’s side. Kalvar buried his wife and returned to his farm. He remained close to the Rihlanders in the village nearby to his home but did little to interfere in the Eyriens and their civil war. Those years were peaceful but left him questioning what he would do with his remaining years. And while it was not exactly an answer, his chance encounter with the butcher’s daughter, Alyona, with her fair brown hair and bright eyes caught him transfixed for a moment. Alyona was still a child, even to Short-Lived standards, barely being sixteen when the two met. Kalvar felt an instant attraction to her laugh and her manner, though he did not act upon it for years. Alyona constantly would meet him as he flew or walked into their village and strike up a conversation with the reserved Prince who’s Jewels she could not sense. She made it a point to bring out a laugh or a smile from him on every visit to the point of silliness.
When it was time for her Virgin Night she went to him and asked him to perform it for her. The hearts in her eyes and the trepidation that she spoke of the matter told Kalvar that it meant more than just ceremony or lust to her, and despite the guilt of the gulf of their years, he agreed.

Afterward, she simply arrived at his farm one day with a cart filled with her belongings and told him that they were going to be husband and wife. The laugh that came out of his mouth was the best feeling he’d ever had. He helped her off the cart, kissed her, and asked her if she’d marry him.

Those following years were the happiest of Kalvar’s life. Alyona a deeply spiritual woman, thought that it was Mother Night’s decision that they had met -- that she could have brought him up after years of loneliness. He didn’t reflect on how cruel it was that Alyona was a Rihlander and thus would die years before he would. Kal instead focused on the joy he shared with her and the children they had together during those years together. While the fighting between the Eyriens intensified, Kalvar learned to love, laugh, and be a warmer father than he ever had been to Odinar.

When Kirian Svetlana descended on Draekar and killed him Lokevar was driven from the Territory and the civil war (mostly) ended. Odinar returned to his father, seeking refuge from the Gray Queen and her consort. While the two had not gotten along for years, Alyona convinced Kalvar to provide sanctuary to his estranged son. She became the bridge between the two men, using faith and her constant sunny manner to heal the long latent wounds festering in them both.

In time, their family became a blended one. Odinar became the older brother the rest of his children could always look to for guidance. Alyona treated Kal’s Eyrien son as if he were her own, and through great effort on the Priestess’s part, the family was a happy one. While Kirian Svetlana and her consort’s men began to crack down on the Rihlanders around them and fight with the Eyrien rebels in the north, Kalvar and his family were able to live in happiness and peace.

But Alyona’s great heart, her charity, drew the eyes of suspicious Eyriens in their province. While Kalvar turned a blind eye to Alyona providing food and shelter to members of the Exchange and the Rihlander Black Widow Queen and her people, the Eyriens who ruled Askavi did not. Finding Alyona alone as she went into the village for supplies, she was kidnapped, “questioned” and then unceremoniously dumped onto the streets to die from her wounds.

Andrei found his mother too late to save her; her jewels broken and her life fading. She begged him to take her to his father so that she could tell him she loved him before she passed. Unfortunately she died before she reached their home, and Kalvar held her broken body in his arms, weeping a swell of tears. While his children hovered around him, trying to console him, it was Odinar who pressed at his father to not let this death go unavenged.

For Odinar, too, loved her, and her death at the hands of the Gray Queen’s men who had murdered his friends and his allies instilled in him a great fury. Kalvar, beside himself in grief, could not summon the discipline to hold inside his passion at the loss of his beloved wife.

But wrath, wrath he could summon.

Kalvar did not pause even to bury her. The grieving Black Jeweled Prince flew into the air with the all the strength he could summon. Zooming to Ebon Varos, the capital of Kirian’s forces, he dove deep and summoned all of the power of the Black that he could command. With a great swell of rage, he fell upon the Black Stronghold and slew everyone within. For hours he went from chamber to chamber killing every Eyrien he laid eyes upon, until at the end of that night the mountain fortress lay empty save for blood and broken bodies.

In the aftermath of Alyona’s death and his retribution, Kalvar reflected and felt that his own inaction had led to the death of not just his wife but also in the suffering of many of the Rihlanders. Too long had he been willing to turn a blind eye to the politics and problems of the Territory. Too long had he turned his attention away from the pains of Alyona’s people and the fact that they had been second class citizens in their own homeland.

    But no longer.

    Character in Play:
Deftly, Kalvar’s hands slid along the sleek marble countertop as he gathered the chips of onions he had just sliced on the cutting board. The feel of the vegetable upon his calloused fingers grounded him to his task of preparing dinner for him and his family for the night. The scent of the onions, though strong, was a perfume that reminded him of the nights spent with Alyona making meals for the children when they were younger. Now the children were adults and Alyona was gone, but he still insisted that despite their differences and their paths, they eat dinner as a family.

But he was not alone, as he would have preferred. The business in Ebon Varos, the Black Stronghold, never seemed to cease.

The Rihlander Warlord Prince, Herman Vulfe, was relaying, again, that his Lady wished to speak to him about a matter most urgent. Odinar, his eldest son and the only thing he had left of Yellivan, hovered by the doorway with an unimpressed expression. Odinar held the Eyrien arrogance typical of his mother’s people, and it dug beneath Kal’s skin to see his son act that way before a guest.

But he would admit if asked, Prince Vulfe was aggravating.

Kalvar had made it clear that he would meet with the new Province and District Queens bi-weekly, otherwise they would be free to rule their areas as they saw fit without needing his permission; as long as they followed the very basic rules he had set out. But Prince Vulfe served the new Queen of Vyrkov, whos Province was filled with Eyrien Rebels and Jhinka. Kalvar had pointedly told them that their affairs were theirs to settle, multiple times. But they continued to press him to interfere directly.

He drew the chunk of beef to the cutting board and began to cut thin slices along the lines of muscle to preserve the tenderness of the salted meat. He did not look up as Prince Vulfe as he spoke. “The meeting with the Queens is next week. We have a schedule, Prince Vulfe. For the efficient operation of the Territory, I will speak to your Lady at that time and not earlier. No Queen is more important than the other.”

Vulfe stepped forward, closer to the countertop, his passion clear in his mien and his voice. “Respectfully, Prince Elbremov, this cannot wait. The Jhinka attack our settlers. The Eyriens are not heeding your declarations. You cannot expect to pass this onto Lady..”

Kalvar spoke in a quiet voice that cut through his objection. “Next week. As scheduled. You can voice your concerns then.”

Vulfe snarled, slamming his fist onto the countertop. The stone was solid enough it did not displace Kalvar’s work, but if it had been a regular table it would have caused him to cut his own hand. Vulfe lowered his head to catch Kalvar’s face and stare into his eyes. “Our people, YOUR people, suffer daily while you sit up high cutting your meat! If you wish to rule this..”

Kalvar’s eyes lifted, liquid burning gold that stared into Vulfe’s own bright blue orbs. His words were cut short as his air supply was suddenly cut short. Odinar tensed, feeling the shift in the air as his father drew upon his power. He stepped forward to speak, but Kalvar slowly lifted a hand to forestall his advance.

Words of ice came from his lips. ”Next. Week. Prince.”

Vulfe coughed, holding at his throat and nodded quickly to indicate he understood. Kalvar released him then, returning his attention back to his work. ”Now, please excuse me Prince Vulfe. I am about to have supper with my family and would like to conclude Court business at this time.”

Vulfe had no objection and thanked him for his time.

Just because he murdered your people and whatever friends you had left in Rihland doesn't mean you have to be mean.
