Personality

Personality:

Andrei has an air of aloof sophistication about him that comes across as pretentious to most. He likes to be mysterious or cryptic -- it culls out conversation with boring people who can’t understand his references and it lets him find those with equally deep wit. He can be condescending when speaking to those he deems of an inferior mental capacity. He can be curt towards those with whom he has a grudge (and yes, he will hold a grudge). He is peevish when interrupted, prone to loud outbursts if thwarted.

But he has an artistic, soulful streak to him as well. He sees a world terribly wounded and bitterly wishes it could be fixed. From this deep empathy sprouts most of his thorny mechanisms, though it has grown into a tangled, compounded mess with his life experiences. As a child, he was curious and full of wonder. Over the years, that has been worn away into something jaded, and he exhibits cruelty in kind towards those who deserve it. He likes to blame his father for his coldness and the Eyriens for the rest, since it was the Eyriens who took away his mother. When not working on botanical experiments, Andrei is found creating art, out at a fine establishment with a few colleagues, or having a fractious relationship with most of his family.

The few friends he keeps know that he has a near-genius level mind and that menial tasks bore him, hence why he focuses not just on managing the farm but also the science behind plants. He’s a man of rituals, enjoying things like tea ceremonies and the traditions throughout the seasons. Lovers of all persuasions will say that he is exquisite in bed but a poor match for long term commitment and if there are women claiming to have had his children, he chooses not to acknowledge them. Business colleagues will remark that dealing with Andrei is a bit like working with a tiger, though they will also say that he has a sharp wit and good fashion sense. But his sisters and brother Reo will say that he is devoted to them, probably because he was devoted to their mother so much. And the Reclaimers -- they know they can rely on Andrei without doubt. If there is one thing good about Andrei in these recent years, it is that he is motivated to the point of passion. He will see Rihland run by the right people.

Likes:
  • 1 - Botanical theory and application. It makes sense that Andrei would like plants since he runs his father’s farm but it’s not the moments of plunging his hands into the dirt that interest Andrei -- it’s cross-breeding, speciation, genetics, controlling the plants and coaxing them into something else. That’s why he runs the farm, because he is able to make Kalvar’s crops into something more than what they began as.
  • 2 - Moots. Andrei enjoys hearing the old tales told like only skalds can. He would love to become a skald but he knows that there is no way he could become one at this point in history. And his connections to the Territory leader restrict his access to many, especially now that his Rihland mother is dead. Andrei misses those events greatly.
  • 3 - Inebriation. Andrei is neither an alcoholic nor a drug addict but he does enjoy the weightless, tingling sensation that alcohol and drugs bring. He tends to be private with this like, sharing it with only a few trusted friends on the weekends. He knows that what he does is illicit but his father was always a hard ass that needed to relax, so it makes sense that since Kalvar’s running a Territory now he would be a hard ass on that Territory too.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - His father running the Territory. Andrei is under the stout but reserved opinion that Kalvar shouldn’t be ruling the Territory, no matter his Jewels. He’s just not suited for it. Andrei likens it to having a cow being a mount instead of a horse -- yes they are both four-footed and able to carry the weight but a horse is made for riding and a cow is not.
  • 2 - Other Eyriens. Andrei tolerates his father and his brother’s obvious Eyrien ancestry but he hates other Eyriens and sees them as a greater problem. If they hadn’t fucked up their Territory, Kalvar would have never stepped into ruling.
  • 3 - Laws. Most of them. Amongst the Blood, there is no law against murder but there are laws against plenty of other things that should not be restricted. Andrei, in particular, thinks that the Prohibitions his father perpetuates are a flagrant and wasteful abuse of power.
Fears:
  • 1 - The Eyriens returning to power. Askavi is dead and should stay that way. The Eyriens mismanaged  the Territory and should not be given another chance. But Andrei is no fool -- he knows the Rebellion is out there and that it wants to see his father deposed. Andrei will take the paternal devil he knows over the Eyriens returning to power.
  • 2 - Always seen as an outsider. Despite his heart being so deeply Rihlander, his blood is not and Andrei fears (though he hides it with anger) that he will never be fully accepted by the people he is so willing to devote his life to.
  • 3 - Becoming his father. They are alike in just enough ways for Andrei to hate, men who have loved deeply and had it ripped apart, men who create life and art and take it away like the little gods that they are, men who enjoy rituals and a firm, guiding hand. Their policies and execution of those beliefs differ (blessedly) but Andrei sees enough of himself in Kalvar to fear that this is his future somehow and he actively does things opposite of what Kalvar would do to avoid this.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Growing spells. Partly extended duration Craft, partly physical enhancement Craft, Andrei has learned how to coax the land into an abundance second only to the powers a Queen has. This Craft allows him to expedite his botanical experiments, while making certain that Elbremov Farms prospers.
  • 2 - Contracts. Andrei’s business sense is honed and contracts drafted by him come with binding conditions. Break one and, depending on how much he likes the other party, be prepared to experience painful results.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Death spells. For someone so engrossed with fostering floral life, it is very difficult for Andrei to conjure up a spell that can kill. It goes against his core being nowadays, especially after his mother’s death.
  • 2 - Diplomacy. Andrei, for obvious personality reasons, does not speak with much tact or care much for what others think of him. His weakness with this Craft comes from the arrogant belief that he does not need it in order to succeed.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Alyona Elbremov, White to Rose Priestess, deceased on 190 AP
Father: Kalvar Elbremov, Red to Black Prince (age 1561, born 1367 BP)
Siblings: Odinar Elbremov, Blood Opal to Red Warlord Prince (age 595, born 401 BP);
Shiori Elbremov, Opal to Sapphire Black Widow (age 36, born 158 AP);
Reo Elbremov, Rose to Purple Dusk Warlord (age 27, born 166 AP);
Valeryian Elbremov, Purple Dusk to Green Priestess (age 26, born 168 AP);

History:

Born the middle child of five, Andrei remembers tottering after his father around the farm most during his childhood, learning the names and details of every plant grown there. His older sister Shiori was always getting into trouble. His eldest brother Odinar was a man grown and more like an uncle than a brother in Andrei’s eyes, especially given that Odinar and Kalvar did not speak for centuries. His younger brother Reo was initially a rival for their mother’s affections but turned into the only brother that Andrei would show any sort of fondness towards. Whatever love he felt his father wouldn’t give, Andrei’s mother gave double that, and the boy was mostly content to learn about growing things from Kalvar and Rihland rituals from Alyona.

Until a few years after his Birthright, where the Opal Prince now began to see things like injustice and cruelty in the world beyond the farm. His mother remained the bright star against the darkness fueled by the Eyrien oppression and his father was the bastion that kept them shielded from most of it, but it leaked around the edges into Andrei’s life in little ways. He did understand why his father, who wore the Black and was undoubtedly the most powerful man in the Territory, did little to stop it. Andrei’s teenage years were filled with arguments about things like “with great power comes great responsibility” that went nowhere except to water the bitter seed inside of him.

When Andrei received his Red, he had already made up his mind that he was going to do something with it, unlike his father. He had begun to make connections in lofty or shady places, sometimes both, exploring ways to undermine the current rulers without drawing attention to himself. It was during these years that Andrei began to learn more about himself personally and solidified his beliefs and values, which furthered his involvement with the Exchange. His gatherings were places were those who felt oppressed to find other kindred spirits. At first, he was secretive about this but eventually, he confided in his mother, hoping to see a day when their people would righteously rule their own lands, rather than be slaves in it. Her heart was also in the same place, he felt, with her charity towards other, either rebellious or less fortunate Rihlanders. She understood. She took him to the secretive moots. When the Eyriens raided the winter one in 181, Andrei was there, protecting other Rihland people as they escaped. He made unexpected allies that day: a Queen, a skald, and other people who wanted the Eyriens gone. Andrei agreed with them, despite his heritage. He raged at, begged his father to join their cause. Yet, as usual, his father Kalvar did nothing about this or any of the troubles that followed, quietly allowing his wife and son to do as they pleased.

But the Eyriens who ruled Askavi did not share the same sentiment.

She was alone, which Andrei forever would hold against his father for allowing their independent mother to be unescorted. His connections, whom he would forever be thankful towards, were the ones who let him know what was happening, and, thus, he was the first to arrive.

And still too late to save her.

They had questioned her, done unimaginable things to her. They thought themselves beyond reproach, above justice. Andrei hurried her home as fast as she could, praying for one more breath, one more heartbeat, just one more…

She died before he reached the haven of their home. He would never forget that moment when he entered the room, her broken body cradled against him like a child, lifeless, and the look on his father’s face. And the words he had said that would drive the final wedge between them...

“This was your doing!”

The next few days were awful on so many levels. Andrei raged against a father he could not reach, while that father destroyed the Court that had fostered such oppression. In Andrei’s eyes, it had taken the death of something so precious for Kalvar to finally stand up for what was right, and he never forgave him for that. Over the next few years, they became estranged, with Andrei only making the occasional appearance at family functions. It didn’t matter what rules his father, now ruler of the Territory, put in place to amends -- Andrei was out to right all of the wrongs Kalvar had allowed to happen by his years of inaction. He would find a way to build the Rihland his mother had died to see born.

He went to speak with the Reclaimers.

Character in Play:

“My little Priest,” she would always say, giving his nose a tweak along with that brilliant smile that never seemed to fade. And he would always correct her, reminding her that he was a Prince, not a Priest. But he secretly treasured the idea of that title and felt he deserved it. Aside from his sister Valeryian, Andrei was the most spiritual, the most connected with the emotions of the world around him.

He still was, but it was a bitter and blasted connection, one barren of any joy, a scorched earth of existence that awaited a rejuvenation he feared would never come. He thought of a Tacean ritual, one of the few that he knew, that involved melting a precious metal into the cracks of a broken bowl, once again making it whole while illuminating how pain could be made beautiful, and he wished he knew of a way to do so with his own broken heart.

Today was not the day to work on formulas, he decided, as he went to his studio. The need to create something beautiful from a raw state possessed him, his soul’s futile cry to keep the memories at bay. The shelves along the room were lined with pieces in various states of completion: glazed, fired, drying, etc. Some of these pieces were commissions, some were presents, but most were for his own private viewing. Each piece told a story -- that one the tale of the day Odinar called him craven, this one for a favorite memory of his sister Shiori, another for the time he had taken a creative man like himself to his bed.

This was your doing!

The memories always began with those four accusing words. They were both the spiky, tattered dam that held the rest of it back and the harbinger of his own personal doom. So long as Andrei did not think of those words, did not complete the final one, he was able to keep in control. It was a spell, of sorts, an issue of controlling his mind before it controlled him. There were half a dozen pieces on those shelves that were representations of when he had failed in that control. He did not wish to add to their number today.

Andrei closed his eyes, imagining those four damning words with the objectivity of one emotionally removed from the situation. It had taken the greater part of a year for him to gain that sort of mental advantage. He envisioned each word, drawn keen in his mind, with all of the agony behind them filling the grooves like molten metal in a mold.

And then, before his pained mind could conjure up another memory of his mother to break through that ironclad dam once again, he swept the words from his view like wiping them away from the sand, creating a fresh canvas upon which to begin his work.

I suppose you could make octopus fritters with spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce. On the side, please. Don't ruin such a delicate taste.
