Distinguishing Features:

Tall, slim, and muscular, Vondar’s body is covered with scars, with the most prominent of these located where his “wings” once were. His golden eyes are friendly and inviting to members of his Court and business associates, shifting to hungry in the presence of a lover.

Talos is a classical Hayllian male, save for his constant shaving of the jet black hair he despises because it gets in the way while he works. His gaze is intense and focused, constantly studying and probing the people around him for weaknesses. Everything feels like sandpaper against his skin, so he dresses in fine, soft clothing that doesn’t aggravate his skin.

As Terminus, robes made of liquid shadow obscure everything but an ivory mask that covers his face. The mask has the facial structure of a humanoid, but not one easily recognized.

Personality

Personality:

Vondar’s life is mired in conflict. Conflict between his dual-castes. Conflict between the life he’s built in Askavi and the life he left behind in Hayll. Conflict between being a father and a subversive. Conflict between the Eyriens he hates and the Hayllian people he seeks to avenge. He loves Hayll’s food, music and culture, but he’s relinquished it to live among a race of bloodthirsty murderers who dedicate their lives to warfare and call it art. Dedicated to personal excellence, he’s devoted himself to a massive task that will most likely end in his death: the wholesale destruction of Askavi and its people.

Centuries spent in Askavi have immersed him in Eyrien culture. He knows why they devote themselves to conquest and the perfection of warcraft. Damn him, he even sees uncomfortable similarities between Askavi and Hayll that have fanned his long-simmering anger into an inferno. He relates to them, on some level, but it doesn’t lessen his desire to destroy their world. He acknowledges no innocents or noncombatants and he cannot forgive them or show mercy.

While he can defend his words with steel, he prefers discussion and debate to learn what makes people tick. His enemies reach for their Jewels or weapons when they’re losing the war of ideas, but not Vondar. A quick mind and a silver-tongue, combined with the cudgel of Protocol are his foremost weapons to browbeat inferiors (and they are all inferior) into agreement or quiet dissent. He’s a manipulator, twisting and shifting the facts of an argument based upon his audience. Elder warriors call him a cripple and a pacifist behind his back. The younger ones, though,  listen to his words. As more of their brothers die to violence his views become more palatable to those who remain. Vondar loves having attention focused on his ideas of peace and prosperity, rather upon his lost wings. Those who comment on the latter learn quickly that he’s still a warrior. He just doesn’t need wings to bring someone down to earth.

Both attentive friend and jealous lover, Vondar is predatory in his pursuit of pleasure. Sex is a great tool for passing the time and manipulating others. He will cross any and every line to advance his knowledge or bend someone to his will. He will rifle through a lover’s mind to learn what they love, shaping their desires (and dulling their enjoyment of other lovers) to his whims. He expects his lovers to focus on him when they are in his presence, forcing them to do so with Craft when necessary. Despite this, Vondar resists being defined as possessive.  The hungers for sex, control, and connection drive him to learn every facet of his lovers’ personalities. Seizing on their passions and fears, he insinuates himself deeper into their lives.

The need to possess and control the people in his life extends even to his daughter, Imarian. She knows her father as a well-meaning but pedantic man whose patience frays when he feels his time is being wasted. He’s rarely sharp with her, but his love for her demands that he settle their disagreements where he’d let others fall by the wayside. Yet her mixed blood secretly embarrasses as a sign of his giving into passion and hunger over cold logic. The flaws of her Eyrien heritage are clear as crystal to his eyes. Still, Imarian is worth ten Eyriens, because Hayllian blood, his blood, flows through her veins.

Patient and methodical, Vondar’s willing to let a plan play out over decades if the end result is a new level of skill and efficiency in his work. He hates being rushed or put on the spot, for it exposes things that he may not have accounted for. The Twisted Kingdom clings to him, giving others the sense that his stares are penetrating through their skin and bones, right into the core of their being. He treats his tools as an extension of his own body, keeping them scrupulously clean and maintained at all times. He writes constantly, scribbling down ideas and pieces of visions for later consideration. He’s lost entire days reviewing his notes and previous successes as he builds toward his next level of achievement.

Terminus, subversive agent of the Tenebrosi Iarvis, is Vondar’s truest self even beyond Talos Trenico’s lust for attention and power. The pursuit of knowledge and deeper truths outstrips even his love of his sexual gratification. He is ruthlessly devoted to the perfection of his webs and refining his long-term plans to destroy Askavi. He’s learned to manipulate the monstrous Jhinka, sharpening them into a weapon meant to end both races. He cares nothing about the numbers of men, women, and children that will die in pursuit of his plan. Blood spilled will answer blood spilled and Askavi may have given away their wealth, but they have not paid the Price for their transgressions.

He struggles to remember Talos Trenico before he donned the mask of Terminus. He catches himself taking pride in Imarian for the Eyrien strength in her soul. He hates Eyrien women but they are fierce enough in bed to satisfy his lusts. He even finds himself empathizing with the broken warriors he meets on his journeys across the Territory, seeing them as heroes from a war that they started. The longer that Vondar Shostakov lives, the harder it becomes to recall things about the life Talos once lead. Vondar is Talos, increased to the highest level, isn’t he? Deep down, the Black Widow Prince fears that the life he’s built for himself is the life he loves most, created upon a foundation of revenge and an endgame of genocide.

Whenever that fear rides him hard enough, he redoubles his efforts to destroy Askavi so that they can never rebuild the war machine that once conquered the world.

Likes:

  • 1. Hayll: Hayll is culture, food, and music. Hayll is bloodsport, politics, and power. Hayll is corrupt. Hayll is beautiful. The worst slum in the worst part of Faro is still leagues above the best place Askavi can muster. Vondar misses his homeland daily, especially the sunrises and sunsets that marked his youth. He relishes the annual gatherings of the Tenebrosi Iarvis for the extra time spent in Hayll wearing his true face. Moreover, his trips to Hayll remind him of the everything he’s loved and lost. Returning home renews his soul. Vondar carries that motivation back to Askavi, ready to burn it all down.

  • 2. Imarian: Vondar believed that he was too filled with hatred and anger to experience love again until Imarian's birth. Needing to possess her in full, he murdered her mother minutes after the child exited her body. He has been her sole provider, her supporter, and the shaper of her life. He is proud of the Queen he's raised, despite her taint. Sometimes he wishes that he could tell her the truth about Hayll and his life. But he loves her too much to shatter a life built on lies and he will not risk that life to unburden his soul, not even for a moment.

  • 3. His Snaketooth: Vondar loves everything about being a Black Widow, but the best part is his snaketooth. He loves the slight sting in his finger when it breaks the skin. It’s a holy, heady thing each time he milks it for the poison needed to further his tasks. He keeps a regular schedule for gathering and ingesting his poison, sometimes mixing it into his drinks for the bitter tang it leaves on his tongue.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Eyriens: Vondar hates Eyrien culture, though he’s mastered its intricacies over five centuries. He hates their toxic, warmongering propaganda. He sneers privately at their delusions of superiority. Interacting with them is like crawling through broken glass and bathing in salt, resulting in a simmering anger that depletes his patience with prolonged contact.

  • 2. Being Rushed: Greatness does not function on a deadline. Nothing inflames his temper more than some idiot (read: practically everyone) demanding his attention right now. Proper prior planning prevents piss-poor performance. He will not rush, or be rushed, just to satisfy someone's poor planning.

  • 3. Messes/Clutter: Born to, and raised by, a Hearth Witch, Vondar is obsessed with cleanliness and organization. He is fanatical about his work spaces, moving straight from irritation to homicidal rage when his instruments, ledgers, or books are out of place. He sets down coasters when he provides refreshments and asks for the same when he enjoys someone's hospitality. Whenever he enters a home or encounters a person, Vondar forms his initial impressions of them based upon their organization or cleanliness. A mote of dust or a book thrown lazily on a bookshelf immediately devalues the resident in Vondar’s eyes before they’ve spoken a single word.

    Fears:

  • 1. Losing His Identity: Spending centuries away from Hayll has taken a toll upon Talos Trenico’s mind. He wakes up some days unable to recall his favorite things, but he knows the things that Vondar loves like the back of his hand. He reminds himself daily that Imarian is Vondar’s daughter, not his, but it’s hard to remember that whenever she does something to make him proud. Every day, Talos’s life becomes just a little fuzzier, a little harder to recall. He worries that he'll stop questioning who he truly is very soon.

  • 2. Imarian’s Death: She is a detriment to, and eventually a casualty of, his mission but Vondar cannot deny that he loves his daughter, Imarian. She began as merely a weapon to be honed and wielded against the remains of her mother’s family but Vondar has come to value her as her own person. Hayll could attack Askavi and she could be caught in the crossfire. But Vondar fears more that the Jhinka, his own weapon against Askavi, could eventually be responsible for the demise of the person he loves most in the world.

  • 3. Losing His Jewels: Vondar has known power all of his life due to his standing in the Abyss combined with his proximity to the Hundred Families of Hayll. He is not just accustomed to shaping the world to his whims; it is as natural to him as breathing. While he did not lose his Jewels in the Purge, he knows thousands of people that did. Even those fortunate enough to have their Chalices repaired still mourn what they once were. Vondar struggles in the presence of his "fellow" war veterans, claiming guilt that Mother Night spared him over those more deserving.

In truth, Vondar hates the constant reminder that failure at his mission will see him stripped of every ounce of power he possesses, be it by the Eyriens or the Iarvis themselves.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Dual-Thought: Upon starting his Black Widow training, Vondar recognized that he needed more time to pursue his new Caste while maintaining his skills as a Prince and warrior. Since he couldn't create more hours in the day, he recognized the need to multi-task wherever possible. An offshoot of a Prince's skill with Efficiency, Vondar is capable of contemplating two separate mental tasks at one time without sacrificing skill or accuracy to either task. He can engage in a debate while working through complex Craft in his mind. Or he can use Compulsion while constructing his schedule for the next three weeks. Both tasks receive his full attention and Vondar does not become confused when considering them.

  • 2. Delivery Webs: Through centuries of refinement, Vondar can lace a web with nearly any type of Craft and install upon an object for continued use outside his presence. These webs are often used to maintain his illusions when he is not present or weave a low-level compulsion to wrap into the wearer’s thoughts until it takes hold in their subconscious mind. The webs are extremely subtle and difficult to detect even when actively sought.

  • 3. Compulsions: Vondar learned early in his life that his will opened more doors than his jewels ever did. While he can force others to act against their will, his greater talent is the ability to weave trigger-phrases into conversations to induce calm in his targets or long-lasting orders that they’ll follow as part of their normal routine. (This Craft functions at the strength of the Ebon Gray.)

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Spontaneous Craft: Vondar is a methodical and patient man, preferring to test his thoughts, gather information, and adjust focus as necessary. When he’s unable to prepare an encounter to his liking, attempts at Spontaneous Craft drain his jewels faster than he can account for. If he’s not careful, he exhausts his well of power on attention-grabbing effects that he cannot control.

  • 2. Emotion Manipulation: For a man that craves the attention and respect of others, Vondar’s abysmal talent in this Craft enrages him. He can use Compulsion to force others to do his bidding, but he can’t make them love him or desire him as he craves. It’s another reason for the simmering anger in his heart, the only real emotion that this Craft ever inspires in him.

  • 3. Tangled Webs: While Vondar can create Tangled Webs like other Black Widows, his duality of thought produces unintended consequences. Divergent agendas and conflicting desires poison Vondar’s forays into the Twisted Kingdom, showing him people and matters he didn’t seek. For him it's like looking into a broken mirror and seeing a different future in every shard of glass all at once.

    History:

Sulene Trenico grew up poor, but learned early on that she didn’t have to stay that way. A Hearth Witch with a reputation for excellence, she turned the cleaning of homes for members of Hayll’s Hundred Families into a small, but thriving business. Taking on a contract for the Accorsi family of Faro Province, Sulene was introduced to the family patriarch, Senator Giuseppe Accorsi. The Accorsi home in Vati became a permanent assignment as Sulene and Giuseppe became lovers, as Giuseppe’s wife was pregnant with their second son. Sulene was pregnant less than a year after their introduction.

The birth of her son Talos shifted Sulene’s priorities, to Giuseppe’s chagrin. Per Giuseppe’s marriage contract, any children born outside of the relationship with his wife, Stella, were barred from taking the Accorsi name. Furthermore, Stella refused to allow Giuseppe’s “bastard spawn” to live alongside her own sons. Stella demanded that Sulene deny Giuseppe paternity, enforcing the point by having the family’s sergeant-at-arms, Lord Rothello di Novi, physically harm Sulene and threaten Talos’s life. Sulene capitulated to keep her son alive.

Talos was bright and inquisitive with a fondness for clean and well-organized spaces due to his mother’s influence. He often cleaned all of his mothers tools and aided her in her tasks. He loved the soft sheets, pillows and fine fabrics that Sulene’s employers owned in high numbers. When he asked her why they didn’t live this way, Sulene told her son that life was about more than luxury. “Pretty trinkets hide ugly souls.” Her warning never dulled Talos’s hunger for the best that life could offer. He knew that he was meant to have them, but didn't know how to reach them.

Receiving the Sapphire at his Birthright, “Uncle” Giuseppe explained that Talos could ensure that he and his mother never wanted for anything ever again. Learning that Stella forced Sulene to deny him paternity of his son, Giuseppe confronted his wife and promised to ruin her and her family if anything happened to Sulene or Talos. This chilled relations between the Senator and his wife once and for all, driving them into the arms of other lovers. Giuseppe arranged for Sulene to obtain a position at a nearby Village Court with Talos becoming a Ward of the Court. Talos embraced his new life and grew closer to his family’s patron.

When Talos left his offering with an uncut Gray Jewel, Giuseppe offered him an opportunity for real wealth and power through service to the Accorsi family, which Talos accepted over his mother’s objections. It was here that he first met Giuseppe’s eldest sons, Troius and Gaetano, becoming fast friends with the latter due to their closeness in age. He grew further acquainted with Troius’s wife, Salome, a Black Widow. Talos was instantly smitten with her, but denied himself out of respect to Giuseppe. Talos also began taking care of his mother after one of Giuseppe's ruts lead to Sulene's permanent injury.

For over nine hundred years, Talos defended the Accorsi family while expecting that he'd assume Rothello’s duties as the family’s sergeant-at-arms when that man retired from service. But where Rothello prepared for today’s enemies, Talos desired insurance against tomorrow's threats as well. He approached Salome and outlined the reasons that she needed to take him as a student, offering fifty years of service for training in the arts of the Black Widows. Salome agreed, unwilling to let anyone else gain the prestige of training such a powerful young warrior. Salome introduced him to Cassica Laertes, her recently graduated student and lover. The elder Black Widow encouraged competition between the two, constantly praising Cassica’s skill and subtly inferring that a natural Black Widow would always outperform a trained member of the caste, no matter how Dark Jeweled or skilled.

Talos vowed to prove both women wrong.

His initial lessons as a Black Widow consumed his focus, leading to a leave of absence from his work with the Accorsi. He worked to master every aspect of his training, submitting two new questions for every question answered. Talos’s temper also grew easier to provoke, finding slights and criticisms in even the most well-meaning corrections or suggestions. He answered those slights with his Jewels and fists instead of his mind. He became jealous of the time and praise that Salome lavished upon Cassica and bedded several women to sate his growing sexual hungers. Years passed as Talos combatted his urges and mastered his own mind and emotions. His lessons grew easier once he learned to accept constructive criticism and apply it to his flaws. Salome and Cassica managed his sexual hungers, while Rothello worked with him to curb his anger. Few Hayllians paid attention to the rumors of war in the west and Talos counted among that number. Even his nascent visions of an unfamiliar land and the birth of a winged Queen gave him little pause. Salome made the first of her three requests, demanding that Talos murder a pair of restaurant owners in Ulma Province of Northwestern Faro. Later, he learned that those two people were Cassica’s parents, a fact that he has kept to himself.

Fifty years later, Salome declared Talos’s training complete. The very night that Salome declared that she had nothing further to teach him, Talos demanded to know the logic behind the targets she’d selected. Salome refused to answer, instead saying that she’d been considering Talos for a greater purpose. Though he’d done good work, she considered him a better hammer than a scalpel. An argument broke out during which Salome revealed that his own father, Senator Accorsi, believed the same.

Talos went to his mother and demanded the truth. Sulene confirmed it Salome’s revelation, saying that she’d taken the money because she didn’t want to lose him to the corruption of the Hundred Families. His current role as his father’s servant and hitman was Giuseppe’s only avenue of establishing a relationship with him. Talos blamed his mother for denying him his family and cut her out of his life, a move that he regretted immediately. Pride would not allow him to relent, however, and he left it at that.

He turned his attention and new skills to the Accorsi. Unwilling to submit to the Coven’s rules, Talos masked his scent and returned to work as Giuseppe's bodyguard and manservant. A century after his return to work, Giuseppe grew caustic, bitter, and paranoid. He lashed out at his children for faults both real and perceived. He pitted his older sons against each other, opening a rift that wouldn’t heal for five centuries. He accused Salome of warping Troius’s mind and taking away his free will, leading to Gaetano’s distrust and fear of Black Widows. He accused his own wife, Stella, of attempting to revise their marriage contract to make Rothello her lover so that they could murder Giuseppe and take over the family. Talos was privy to these paranoid ramblings and tried to soothe the old man’s mind, but Giuseppe wouldn’t hear of it.

When Giuseppe murdered Stella and Rothello in a cold rage a century later, Talos was the only person that the grief-stricken man trusted to help him cover up the act. Murder was a not crime among the Blood, but his sons would never forgive him for killing their mother. Worse, Stella’s family would declare war upon the Accorsi and ruin them through attrition. Talos helped the old man, finally obtaining the closest thing to a father-son relationship he’d ever had with Giuseppe.

It was not the outcome he’d foreseen when he poisoned the old man’s mind, but it served his plans just as well.

Talos made it appear as though Rothello murdered Stella when she refused to abandon her family. Giuseppe repeated the story to all who’d listen, establishing closer ties with Stella’s family and receiving sympathy from his peers across Hayll. Giuseppe combated his grief with work, funding a charity benefiting the arts in Stella's name. He ate only when forced and rarely slept. His temper and hygiene suffered, forcing his eldest sons to work together to keep the family fortune and influence from waning.

Eventually, Giuseppe's body was ravaged by his Jewels. Talos found him dead in his study one morning, his "signing pen" clutched in one emaciated hand while his fingers clawed at the desk. Talos felt pride that his father was unable to resist the compulsion spell laid into his favorite writing utensil. His skill as a Black Widow had increased.

Salome, recognizing Talos’s handiwork, informed him that he no longer owed her a third favor; he’d done exactly what she wanted. Giuseppe’s death lead to Troius’s confirmation as the new senator of the Accorsi while Gaetano ran the family's finances. Angered at being used yet again, Talos cut ties with the family, refusing to owe them anything else.

The Tenebrosi Iarvis had other plans.

Members of the organization had been watching him since Salome’s initial agreement to teach him. While she refused to bring him into the organization, other members understood her reasons for recruiting him: she was attempting to establish her own faction to subvert the Order’s rule regarding manipulation of the Hundred Families.

The being called Ignoto appeared to Talos, informing him that Salome would kill him at her earliest opportunity. Ignoto offered a choice: kill Salome first and become his own master...or be cut down when she came for him without any allies. Still infuriated that Salome had used him implement her takeover of the Accorsi family, he accepted Ignoto’s offer.

Killing his former mentor and lover nearly cost him his life. Once the deed was done, he falsified a letter from Salome saying that she had business in Dhemlan and watched Troius fall apart. Talos was then brought beneath Draega and inducted into the Tenebrosi Iarvis. He chose the name Terminus to represent both the end of his old life and the end of being used as a tool to further the goals of others. Moving forward, he would guide his own destiny while he supported the Iarvis. He spent two centuries learning the order’s history, training, and unlocking further secrets of the Black Widow’s Craft.

The Eyriens had found their way to Hayll.

One of their initial attacks occurred in Vati. While the City Guard had repelled the attack, Sulene was among the casualties. The Eyriens violated her, broke her jewels, and left her for dead. Learning that her killers were called the Blood Seekers, Talos vowed vengeance. Ignoto appeared to him once more and tasked him with determining the true strength of this new foe and the full extent of their plans. Rumors circulated at that time that a counter-strike was under preparation.

Talos sensed an opportunity and seized it. He asked Cassica to join him but she refused and they parted ways, unknowing that they served the same masters.

Two years after the initial attack, Hayll's return strike on Askavi killed women and children but ultimately failed to defeat the Eyrien onslaught. Unwilling to accept defeat, Talos stole into Askavi and captured an injured warrior whose wings were lost in battle. Peeling apart his barriers and mind, Talos learned of the Eyrien war camps and hunting camps. He learned of the Red Queen who controlled the Territory and marched them to war. He learned that the Eyriens would not stop until every corner of creation was under their dominion. Askavi's defeat meant crippling its war machine and ensuring that it did not recover. Talos assumed the life of Vondar Shostakov, former member of the Black Sky War Camp. Without wings, he could no longer fight or live as a “true” Eyrien warrior, but he earned the respect of his fellow warriors for his sacrifice.

Xanian Estaroth, a young Priestess, lost her mother during the counterattack and languished in a cave near the warren where he'd made his home. He sheltered her while she recovered, started a rumor that she'd been abducted in the counterattack. To Xanian, he explained that Hayllian saboteurs had assassinated the families of notable warriors to make Askavi retreat. He feigned grief at the loss of his own family, playing on the Xanian's sympathies and growing closer to her through their shared losses. Despite her initial desires, Xanian agreed to stay hidden until it was safe. They grew closer during this time and Xanian gave birth to their daughter, Imarian, a year later.

The moment he laid eyes on Imarian, he understood his mother’s motivations. Vondar murdered Xanian moments after she gave birth, unwilling to share something so precious with the people who’d taken away his family. In the end, Vondar's search party located Xanian's body on the outskirts of a Landen village. The Healer explained that the young Priestess had died shortly after childbirth. Vondar took the child in when nearly every other warrior reacted with disgust at the idea of taking in the child. Knowing that her grandfather would do the same, Vondar took the child in on a "temporary" basis, since he was now unable to return to the battlefield.  Vondar persuaded his fellow searchers (many of whom served with him in Black Sky) to swear that Xanian had simply died in the initial attack rather than explain to her father that she'd died giving birth to a half-breed child. Vondar silenced those who disagreed, using them to expand his skills.

Even in this stage of the war there were Eyriens who already tired of the conflict and the Red Queen's seemingly endless hunger for conquest. Families mourned the loss of their loved ones who died on foreign soil or were stationed there to secure Askavi's holdings. He spent the next two centuries cementing his ruse by tearing apart the minds of his former comrades and those who opposed or slighted him over his lack of wings. He immersed himself in Eyrien culture and learned how women were forbidden from using weapons. He learned of the richness of their mines and resources.

He learned of the monstrous Jhinka, whom even the Eyriens did not understand and formed new plans.

Vondar raised Imarian and slowly established himself in the South District of Living Lake Province. Publicly he portrayed himself as a pious father raising a young Queen on his own. He encountered Celebrian Eodan, a Priestess who’d been Xanian’s friend and mentor for many years and was also close to Prince Estaroth. Vondar encouraged her interest in Imarian while becoming her friend. Celebrian performed Imarian’s Birthright, leading to his daughter receiving the White. Imarian became a Ward to the Queen of South District, while he accepted a position in the Court’s Fourth Circle that allowed him to come and go on “mining surveys” in the mountains as he pleased.

Privately, he devoted his energies to breaking new boundaries with his Craft and making allies among the leaders of the district courts. He assembled investors to secure rites to various mines in Living Lake. When Imarian came of age, Celebrian lead her Offering as well, bonding her closer to the Shostokov family. During this time, the Jhinka’s aggression increased. The savage race presented a mystery to solve and Vondar attacked it relentlessly. He reported back to Iarvis with his findings, using his “surveys” across the Territory as a for his extended absences.

A century later, Vondar suggested that peace with the Jhinka was possible, correctly guessing that the Eyriens would dismiss the idea out of hand when fighting and murdering them was easier. His status as a war veteran and the loss of his wings brought him listeners, but many of his fellow warriors believed that he'd lost his mind. His reputation suffered, so Vondar discussed his ideas in private and only with those he trusted.

Two centuries before the Purge, Vondar tested his method of influencing the Jhinka to attack specific targets, using a Landen mining village as the first target. While successful, the attack proved that many of his theories about the workings of the Jhinka mind were off-course. He eventually captured one of the creatures for direct study and refined his theories in order to increase the success of his next test.

The Purge caught Vondar unaware. Sensing the approach of the dark wave of energy during a meeting with members of the South District Court, Vondar suggested that everyone layer their shields immediately and while keeping his own power to let everyone else absorb the brunt of the attack. Believing himself safe behind his cohorts, Vondar was still unprepared for the sheer fury of Witch's wrath and battered unconscious before he could erect shields of his own.

He woke to find the South District in shambles.

Initially, he believed that a second Hayllian strike had succeeded where the previous one failed. He discounted that, believing that the Iarvis would have warned him in time to protect himself. Once he’d ensured that his Jewels and mind were intact, Vondar found much of the court broken or dead, a sight that frightened him to his core. Even today, it's hard for him to discuss what he saw in those first minutes after Witch's fury had passed.

He located Imarian and found her whole. He found Celebrian whole as well, but she reported that Drakkar Estaroth had been broken back to his Blood Opal and nearly drowned in the great lake that named their Province. Over the next few months, the broken and defeated Eyriens returned to Askavi with tales of their war machine’s decimation and the complete reversal of their fortunes. Vondar returned to Hayll to report this turn of events and learn how this could have happened. But as he passed through Pruul and into Hayll itself, he saw that the attack had affected all of Terreille. Vondar is still shaken by the memories of so many powerful Blood rendered powerless to save themselves or the people they loved. He knows that it easily could have been him or Imarian lying dead on the floor or broken so thoroughly that their Chalice couldn't be repaired.

Still, Ignoto instructed him to continue his mission and ensure that Askavi did not regain its former strength.

Since the Purge, Vondar has refined his manipulation of the Jhinka. To the Eyriens, the Jhinka appear smarter and better coordinated than ever before. Vondar has returned to public life with a message for his fellow Eyriens, suggesting that now is the time to save Askavi rather than make war on the outside world. As the Jhinka destroy villages and courts across the Territory, Vondar’s views gain traction with younger warriors who never knew the power of Askavi during its height. They want an enemy the can fight right now. They want to win. The Jhinka are that enemy, they say, and maybe it’s time that the Courts and the War Camps directed their attentions to solving that problem rather than renewing a war on a faraway territory that few of them care about.

Thirty years ago, Celebrian approached Vondar and explained that she was ready to bear a child. Expecting that she would ask him to be the father, Vondar was incensed to learn that she’d offered her womb to Drakkar Estaroth. She needed his help to drain her Jewels so that she did not endanger the pregnancy through Craft use. Something inside him snapped that day, though Vondar agreed to aid his dear friend. When she announced her pregnancy, Vondar kept his distance, stating his desire to avoid antagonizing a protective Warlord Prince and prospective father. In truth, Vondar poisoned Celebrian. This rendered the child, Valar, stillborn to his parents' disbelief and sorrow, eventually driving them apart. Vondar vowed that he'd keep killing Drakkar’s children until grief and guilt swallowed him whole.

He’s further provoked the Jhinka’s aggression and watched the War Camps struggle to respond. When the Court with Two Hearts formed in response to the problems plaguing Askavi, Vondar saw the unified Territory Court as a threat to his plans. Keeping tabs on the two Queens, he was rewarded for his patience when Gillian Yatskaya undertook a tour of the Territory. Vondar kidnapped the Queen and hid her away in order to cause turmoil within the Territory Court. An unforeseen side effect of that unrest saw Drakkar confront Illyrian Kriat’s Consort, Eristovar Errsa, and demand to know the status of the delegation to Hayll while Eristovar’s group covertly searched for Gillian. When the Jhinka launched a surprise assault on both parties, Drakkar killed Eristovar and was captured by the forces of the Territory Court. Believing that Drakkar would be slain when Illyrian Kriat claimed her blood Price, Vondar considered his hated enemy finally beaten.

Instead, Estaroth bonded to Illyrian Kriat and became the Warlord Prince of Askavi.

Enraged, Vondar sent an assassin to kill Drakkar but met with further failure. He has now settled for destroying everything that the Warlord Prince holds dear. To that end he’s manipulated his way into Celebrian's bed, using the new High Priestess of Askavi his eyes and ears within the Territory Court. His elevation to the post of Steward over Living Lake Province has given him greater status within the area and allowed him to apply his mind to solving the issues of his District Rulers and their people. Since the disappearance of the previous ruler, Vondar is effectively running the Court and has made himself a vocal supporter of the Blood Seekers and the Hunting Camps, visiting a number of them during the year.

Nothing will stop Vondar from avenging his people and their losses at the hands of the Eyriens. He will butcher every man, woman, and child in Askavi if it means visiting the same loss and horror that the rest of Terreille felt long ago. But he also loves his daughter, enjoys Celebrian's company, and enjoys ruling Living Lake Province while he prepares it for his daughter's rule.

Meanwhile, Talos Trenico's life grows harder to recall with each passing year.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

    Why don’t you... just...kill me?

The witchlamps flared to life upon Terminus’ arrival. Vondar Shostakov, Eyrien warrior and hero of the Great War, spoke through split lips and cracked teeth, lifting his heavy head as his jailer entered the warren. The loss of his wings, combined with decades of restraint and torture, had reduced the once-proud male to a husk of his former self. Sometimes he still held the spark of defiance he possessed shortly after Terminus first captured him. During those that first year, Vondar promised to shatter his skull then rape to death every woman he'd ever loved. He vowed to mount their heads on spikes, followed by mounting Terminus's own head on an opposing spike so that they could watch each other suffer for eternity.

That imagery spoke to the Iarvis agent, so he murdered Vondar’s family and mounted their heads on the wall across from his cell for five years, wrapped with preservation spells to commemorate their agony for as long as possible. Terminus saw it as proof that he understood Eyrien culture, a gesture meant to bridge their differing backgrounds. Vondar took it poorly.

Leave it to an Eyrien to miss the point.

The Eyrien Prince retreated to the far corner of the cell, scurrying away from the light as though burned. Terminus went to his worktable, ignoring the question while he sat down to put the final touches on his newest creation. Vondar always sought reprieve from his pain by questioning his captor. Terminus enjoyed that suffering, though, and let him wallow in silence while the question hung in the air between them.

He spoke after he'd organized his thoughts.

    Because I keep my promises.

Vondar grunted and groped along the wall, dragging himself to his feet. Terminus rose from his stool and faced him, walking toward the cell door.

I said that you'd live while you remained useful. You’ve taught me more about Askavi and your people than I would have learned on my own. And you have lived in relative comfort.” Terminus said, extending a hand to indicate his cell, with its dirty bed and stained sheets. Vondar chuckled, the sound like two stones rubbing together, then coughed noisily and spat blood on the floor of his cell.

Terminus drew back his cowl and unfastened his mask, then dropped it to the floor. He undressed and then tugged the Illusion Web into place over his body. As it settled in, the man’s body filled out with the muscle and scars of a blooded warrior.

Vondar stared into his own eyes and face.

The smile on his captor’s lips mimicked pleasure, but it was a viper's smile, white and gleaning. Terminus opened the cell door and stepped inside, forcing Vondar to retreat until his back touched the cold stone of the wall once more. His own eyes glared at him from several feet away.

Terminus's arm lanced out, lifting the Eyrien by the throat in a vise-grip. Vondar struggled to no avail as Terminus’s felt the sting of his snaketooth breaking through his right ring finger. The sensation cleared his mind, confirming that this was the right thing to do.

The snaketooth plunged into Vondar’s throat.

His arms were iron weights. His eyelids were boulders. His lips wouldn’t move.

Join your family in Mother Night's embrace. Give her my word that I'm sending others to join you soon.” Terminus said as Vondar's eyes rolled back and he expired from the poison coursing through his veins.

As I said, I keep my promises.

    Petitions (if any):

Caste Requesting : Black Widow Prince

    Reasons For Requesting these Castes:

Prince: Vondar is a manipulator, administrator, and diplomat intent on swinging public opinion against the Territory Court of Askavi. Prince fits his core personality of long-term planner, organizer, seeker of knowledge and weaknesses in the people around him. Warlord Prince would not fit him as he lacks the cold rage and immediate drive to violence of that Caste. Prince also lends him greater social bearing  as he influences and clashes with the power players of Askavi, including the Territory Court.

Black Widow: Vondar is the villain of Askavi’s plot, with many of his machinations possible through his Black Widow Caste. These include:

    - Attempting to have Drakkar Estaroth assassinated via poison and Compulsion of members of the Territory Court.

    - Kidnapping Gillian Yatsakaya to destabilize the Territory Court and promote suspicion of the Blood Seekers and the Warlord Prince of Askavi.

-Influencing the Jhinka to increase their attacks against Blood and Landen alike.

-Compelling Celebrian Eodan and others to act as his eyes and ears within the Courts and War Camps across Askavi.

    Plans for this Character:

Vondar has several plans for Askavi:

    - Manipulate the Jhinka into destroying Hunting/War Camps and villages, showing the people that the Courts are incapable of protecting them.

-Influence the Landen to demand independence from the Blood, creating discord between the Landen and Blood of Askavi

-Attempting to kill Abbadon al-Sabbah, Drakkar's son, in accordance with his vow to destroy Drakkar's bloodline.

-Building the Court of Living Lake Province for Imarian to eventually rule. Establishing her as a worthy ruler in opposition to Illyrian Kriat.

-Thwarting any and all attempts by the Territory Court to establish relations with neighboring Territories (Dena Nehele, Shalador, Raej, Dhemlan)

-Destroying the Blood Seekers War Camp and weakening its defenses against the Jhinka and outside enemies.

-Motivating the younger generation of Eyrien warriors to push back against the traditions held closely by their elders, including allowing females into combat with an eye toward breaking down the War Camps' support of Drakkar Estaroth and the Territory Court.

-In the event of Gillian’s return, there will be further plots with the entire Territory Court and Gillian’s males.

-Interaction with Lukevar and Renvar, both of whom are tied to Gillian.

    -Plots with the Tenebrosi Iarvis.

Hello, I’d like to redeem my Advanced Craft Specialty (Compulsions) for Vondar, per Points Transaction:

Compulsions: Vondar learned early in his life that his will opened more doors than his jewels ever did. While he can force others to act against their will, his greater talent is the ability to weave trigger-phrases into conversations to induce calm in his targets or long-lasting orders that they’ll follow as part of their normal routine. (This Craft functions at the strength of the Ebon Gray.)

Weakness:

Tangled Webs: While Vondar can create Tangled Webs like other Black Widows, his duality of thought produces unintended consequences. Divergent agendas and conflicting desires poison Vondar’s forays into the Twisted Kingdom, showing him people and matters he didn’t seek. For him it's like looking into a broken mirror and seeing a different future in every shard of glass all at once.
