Appearance

Play By: Francis Cadieux
Distinguishing Features:

Dark hair frames haunted eyes set into a chiseled, exotic face. A scar on his left eyebrow denotes a battle where he nearly lost an eye to a Shaladorian spear. Fin’s most prominent feature is the large wings sprouting from his back, signaling his Eyrien heritage. The rest of his body is a maze of crisscrossing scars, the foremost being a jagged, ugly scar beneath his sternum. He tells people that this is the wound that should have killed him, but did not. If your enemy fails to kill you, don’t give him a chance to correct his mistake.

Personality

Personality:

Fin al-Sabbah strives to be a simple, stable man in a world that has changed drastically from the one he was born into. He is gruff and speaks plainly, though his smile comes easily for those he is comfortable with. He is never seen without his sword or his favorite daggers close at hand. He deeply loves his family and considers his given word a bond. When Fin says he will do something, you can count the minutes until it's done. He is stoic and deeply calm, almost too calm for one of the Blood.

Those who remark on it earn an simple, mysterious smile from the Eyrien Warlord.

He is still a warrior in his prime despite witnessing the birth, maturation, and death of several generations of his clan. He impresses upon his people to not only respect their elders but honor those who have come before them. Eventually, all return to the sands that birthed them. Showing respect costs nothing and can save lives.

It takes much to shatter Fin’s calm, but a few things are sure to draw his anger. Mistreatment of his clan, whether from within or without, brings forth the protector that several have heard about in whispers around the fires. The Sentinel of the Sands will tolerate no harm to his people. He strives to temper justice with mercy among his people and deal fairly with the other clans. Someday, the mantle of leadership will pass to another and Fin promised to the clanhead who took him in long ago that he will guide Clan Sabbah's leaders as a friend and defend them for as long as he lives.

Likes:
  • 1. The Short-Lived: Fin has lived several lifetimes among the short-lived and they always find new ways to surprise him. Barring ill luck, he will live long after everyone he currently knows is dust in the wind. Still he watches the short-lived at work, at play, and in love and recognizes that these moments are all they have. In a way, he envies them.

  • 2. Flying: Flying is freedom. While he'll never be what anyone calls "joyful", flying is something that belongs to him that he doesn't share with others. The sky his as much his home as the desert.

  • 3. Teaching: While Fin enjoys a good fight or sparring session, teaching is his first love. He strives to make his students more than capable of mere self-defense, but also capable of judging a situation, reacting, and ultimately achieving victory. He also focuses on teaching the males under his command the laws of the tribe and being better men.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Poor Discipline - Fin rises early to bathe, eat and train so that his warriors never find him unprepared. He instills the same in his subordinates. Warriors who cannot or will not learn discipline earn his ire. Warriors depend on each other to stay alive; an undisciplined warrior gets people killed.

  • 2. Harming His People - This is the fastest way to draw Fin’s anger. He will tolerate no harm to his people from within or without. Outsiders have learned the hard way that Clan Sabbah is not to be trifled with. Clan members know that to bring harm or ruin upon the clan is a death sentence that he will personally execute.

  • 3. Fighting Eyriens/Half-Eyriens - Fin doesn't enjoy fighting his own people. He's already killed several, most notably his father and he still remembers their deaths centuries after the fact. He will try to reason with his people or the half-Eyriens he encounters, but if he has to fight them, he'll try not to kill them.

    Fears:

  • 1. Failing Clan Sabbah - He was born and trained in Askavi, but there is nothing left in that land for him. He is Clan Sabbah and is an example to his tribesman and outsiders. He strives to live by the lessons of justice and fairness he was taught by the first clan head who rescued him centuries ago. Warfare, however, is in his blood and soul.  Eyriens solve their problems through warfare and others will follow him if he asks.

  • 2. Death- Fin has lived for a millennia and may live longer still. He should have died during the Purge with his father, yet he lived while those around him fell. He fears that Mother Night and the Darkness have allowed him to live in return for greater sufferings later. The idea keeps him up at night and Fin is never hungry to grant death to others.

  • 3. Fathering Children - While Fin likes children, he is terrified at the idea of fathering his own. His father nearly killed him and he fears fighting his own children on the battlefield. Half-Eyrien children are heaped with scorn and discrimination they have not earned. Is it fair to subject a child to that? Could he maintain his calm if someone harmed his own?

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Rut Transference: The Rut disrupts Fin's attempts to perfect his his mind, body, and soul. Fin has learned to channel the excess energy of the Rut into staying awake for long periods of time, allowing him to work, fight or merely outlast those around him. The current generation of Clan Sabbah has never seen their clansman sleep.

  • 2. Advanced Finishing Kills: Though he prefers peace, ending lives became second-nature to Tavar in the Hunting Camps and then in various Territories. On the battlefield, he cuts down his foes mercilessly as Craft, muscle memory, and training lead him to strike killing blows without conscious thought. Tavar’s kills die quickly and return to the Darkness faster still, allowing him to advance without concern for those left in his wake.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Emotional Manipulation - This craft is anathema to Fin. He is a warrior and a leader. If his example does not inspire, if his words do not reach the hearts and minds of his clansmen, then he will not compel them with petty Craft. Nor will he follow a leader that does so.

  • 2. Calming Rage - Fin believes that, if he'd possessed this skill on the day of the Purge, he could have saved not only his wife, but his father’s life as well. Fin's grounded nature is one of his defining traits but he is unable to share it with those under his command. He must hope that his example is enough.

    History:

Tavar Andros was born in the South District of Living Lake 250 years after Askavi began its war upon Terreille. His father, Velar, was already a renowned warrior, among the first contacted when the plans for war were being made. Tavar idolized his father, hearing stories of his training in the Hunting Camps and praying to the Darkness that he’d earn the chance to fight beside his father in battle. His nickname, Fin, came from one of the village while learning to fish before his Birthright ceremony. One of the other boys said that his nascent wings looked like the fin from a fish. Tavar punched the boy senseless for the insult, but Velar suggested he wear the name as a badge of pride and never show weakness to his enemies.

When the Mother Night gifted him with the Purple Dusk for his Birthright, it was the first time his father expressed pride in him. He went to the Hunting Camps later that year and soaked in all of the knowledge available to him, learning to fight with spear, sword, and knife. His trainer, Kanar, remarked on the similarities between father and son at such a young age. Tavar took this praise in stride and sought not just to match his father’s records, but exceed them.

The receipt of his Sapphire jewel for his Offering lead to his father throwing a large celebration in addition to his graduation from the Hunting Camp. Tavar spent fifty years aiding in the Hunting Camps and launching raids against the Jhinka to curb their aggression even as the Eyriens pressed their assault on greater Terreille. In one encounter, he and his war-brothers were outnumbered by a Jhinka hunting party, with one of them wounded. Tavar killed one of the hunters with a thrown spear, then lead the band away from his war-brothers, giving them time to make it to a healer in Ebon Muil. Over the course of several days, Tavar then maneuvered his pursuers into a series of single combats and slew the entire group.

His father invited him into his war party headed for Shalador the following month.

Prior to their departure to the new war front, a Black Widow advised Velar and Tavar they would die fighting each other. The fortune bothered Tavar, but the high action of the war soon took his mind away from it.

Several centuries of battle showed Tavar his people were devolving into monsters pushing young warriors to commit atrocities. His war-brothers raped, pillaged and murdered without cause or care for what the damage left behind. The final straw came when, during his father’s deployment to another battlefront, his war party’s commander found a Hayllian Priestess in Faro. The second commanded Tavar to “claim his spoils” for Askavi. Tavar balked at the command, citing that that there was no honor in humiliating a weakened opponent.

His commander ordered him to take her on pain of death.

Tavar killed him, taking a stomach wound in the process. He threw down his spear that night and tried to fly back home, but wounds and fatigue caught up dragging him into the desert where he expected to die. He woke days later, tended to by a young woman. Her name was Farrah al-Sabbah, daughter of the Clan Head.

Clan Sabbah wanted to turn the Eyrien away, but Farrah convinced her father to let him remain. Upon healing, Tavar helped with menial tasks, no matter how demeaning while learning of the tribe from Farrah. The pair eventually fell in love, but only a clan member would be approved to take her hand.

Tavar underwent the trials and succeeded, renaming himself Fin al-Sabbah to distance himself from his past.

Sadly, the past did not stay there.

Ten years after his arrival, Fin’s father, Velar, found the Sabbah encampment late one summer prior to the seasonal migration. Velar was first overjoyed to see his son, but then realized the truth: Tavar had abandoned his people for a life among the short-lived. Tavar learned of his mother’s death when the Hayllians counterattacked and slaughtered women and children indiscriminately.

First, Velar demanded that Fin return home and reclaim his honor by joining the new offensive against Hayll. When Fin refused, Velar ordered his men to attack the Sabbah. Fin challenged his father to single combat, realizing too late that the Widow’s prophecy was coming true.

Father and son battled on the sands.

    The son...lost.

Fin took a seemingly mortal wound from his father’s blade while Farrah watched. He resigned himself to failure and death.

    The Purge happened that day.

Fin remembers only that he felt something terrible happening when the darkness took him. He woke to find his father and the other Eyriens dead, along with several members of the Sabbah. Farrah’s Summer Sky shattered while shielding them; she broke her Yellow trying to keep him alive. Fin buried all of the bodies himself and resigned himself to leaving, but the Clan Head demanded that he stay. He chose his Clan over his family, and that made him true Sabbah. To leave would be to dishonor the whole of the Clan.

Fin has remained ever since. He has watched the elders and his wife die, watched new generations born, grow, and die again and again. Still, he watches over them out of love and duty, especially now that his grand-nieces are coming of age. He represents the Clan to Queen Ghanima right now, but he looks toward the future.

Askavi lost the war. They may be broken now, but Fin knows as well as anyone that it is in an Eyrien’s nature to fight. He wonders how his homeland will respond to the challenges of the new world.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

The Eyrien stared into the fire and let the memories come.

The sound of splashing water echoed in his mind’s ears across the centuries. He could still smell the fish from Living Lake as though it stood before him, rather than thousand of miles to the west.

Your wings look like a giant fin! Perhaps you’ll swim your way to battle for the glory of Askavi!

The name of the boy who’d teased him so was lost to memory. Punching his face until his hand bled was not.

Good night, Tavar-Tavar, wherever you are…

Mother’s voice was clear as a bell, one of the few things about Askavi he truly missed. More than once he’d promised himself that he’d return to Askavi and find her grave, apologize for not being there to die in her place. He’d mistrusted Hayllians ever since, though he understood the need to strike a decisive blow against a seemingly unstoppable foe.

You never talk about your home, Tavar. There are nights I feel like I lay with a stranger.

He’d eventually told Farrah everything, but only after his father came to murder her people for, in his opinion, stealing his only son. Fingers traced the jagged wound just below his sternum. It ached sometimes, when he thought of Father or Mother. A century later and he couldn’t think about Velar Andros without something hurting.

How dare you dishonor me this way? You deserted your people! Murdered them for outsiders! You are no Eyrien! My son is dead!

I promise that I will kill every last one of them for this injustice.

He shut his eyes tight against the memory, willing it back into the iron box inside his mind.

He spun and caught the hand reaching for him from the shadows, slamming the intruder against the rock wall. His visitor, a young boy from the tribe, offered no resistance. His eyes were wide with fear as he looked up at the winged man that some in the tribe called the Sentinel. The elders whispered that he hadn’t slept in centuries for the souls of his fallen enemies sustained him. He rolled his eyes every time the stories got out of hand. There wasn’t much he could do to stop them.

If you’re sneaking up on someone, wait until after your catch your breath. What do you want?” he asked.

The boy barely got his sentence out. “Lord Tavar, the elders wish to see you immediately.

He sighed, then let the boy go. He sensed politics in the air. He hated the smell of politics. He turned, grasped his weapons, and stretched his wings. Tonight was a good night to fly.

Before he took flight, he looked over his shoulder at the boy, who was rubbing his sore wrist.

That name you used. It’s not for you. Don’t let me hear you saying it or spreading it around.” the Eyrien said.

    My name is Fin.”

Hello, I’d like to redeem my Advanced Craft Specialty (Finishing Kills) for Tavar, per Points Transaction:

Finishing Kills: Though he prefers peace, ending lives became second-nature to Tavar in the Hunting Camps and then in various Territories. On the battlefield, he cuts down his foes mercilessly as Craft, muscle memory, and training lead him to strike killing blows without conscious thought. Tavar’s kills die quickly and return to the Darkness faster still, allowing him to advance without concern for those left in his wake.
