Race:  Long Lived
Caste:  Queen
Birth Territory: Rihland
Home Territory: Askavi

Birthright Jewel: Uncut Rose

Role:
Faction:

Appearance

Play By: Alicia Keys
Distinguishing Features:
There is no mistaking her heritage in her face.  She is Eyrien, the epitome of their beauty and Queenly grace... save for the one flaw she can do nothing about.  There are no wings.  No sign that there ever WERE wings.  There is nothing she can do to disguise this disfigurement, and it is something she is obviously self conscious about.

Personality

Personality:
All she has known in her short life is the land of mountains and plains within Kaeleer.  Even there, in the world she loved and explored - she felt out of place.  Ever since Kalvar Elbremov destroyed her home, her people, she has felt even more adrift.  That sense of loss has left her less confident than she otherwise might have been - especially in her people's homeland.
Some part of her has been excited about returning to Askavi.  She has heard the stories of its wild beauty, and she has wanted to see Living Lake for as long as she can remember.  The reality of her 'home' however is far different than she expected.
The Purge was not kind to Askavi.  The world has been unkinder still.  Worse, she is a Queen.  She feels the call to tend the land and the people upon it and yet she fears she will never be enough.  She knows she is young.  She knows that the weight of her people's survival rests on the few Queens Askavi has managed to retain - and it is terrifying to think that the will of the Mother is that she return to such a starving land when her shoulders are still so small.  Despite the lack of Queens, despite the obvious desperate need of the land beneath her feet.. she is still painfully aware of the disgust that many hold for her wingless body.  She did not lose her wings in a battle - she was born malformed.  Without wings.  Her caste is both her blessing and her bane - for she was spared death because of her caste, but she can also feel the disgust that so many hold for her.
If she were more of a coward, she would think of running.  But there is no going back.  She couldn't even if she wanted to - because something in Askavi calls to her.  Something about the place makes her heart race, and her soul ache.
Her soul may long to feel less responsibility - but it also longs to ensure that her duty is fulfilled.  She feels the pull of land and people, and she feels obligated to assist as best she can.  But that doesn't change that she is also driven by fear and concern that she will disappoint those who need her.
Her soul shrinks at the reality of how her people feel about her - but she does her best to try to keep a strong face when confronted by those who think she is less.  That often comes across as a quick temper.  She would rather be kind and loving; it is hard to do so when one can tell that they are likely to be thrown away with disgust for attempting it.

Likes:
  • 1.  Swimming - She has no wings to make swimming awkward, and diving into the water lets her imagine that she is 'flying' in her own way.  With her Jewels, she is able to fuel her speed and grace within the water, and if she could get away with it, she would never leave the water.  There is a freedom there that she can get no where else.
  • 2.  Jewelry Making - In Rihland she learned that her Gift for the land worked best in the mines and mountains.  She would often claim small gems and stones from those mines as rewards for her good work, and she delighted in turning those gems and stones into bits of Jewelry for herself and for others.  Now in Askavi?  It gives her something to work her stress and frustrations out.
  • 3. Intimacy - Sex is well and good, and she greatly enjoys it.  But Sex isn't really what she is seeking more often than not. She is seeking that sense of connection, that sensation when she cuddles up to someone and feels their arms wrap around her like a warm and comforting security blanket.  She enjoys feeling as if - even if only for a few hours - she is the focus of someone's world.  That intimate connection is something she relishes, especially now that she finds herself in a place that screams for her Touch, her Gift, and her Blood.

    Dislikes:
  • 1. Informality - While she is more than happy to be informal with family and very close friends, Talyrian greatly dislikes when people drift away from Protocol.  Protocol provides known boundaries, Protocol ensures safety when Caste and Temper might cause bloodshed and death.  While she understands how Protocol can get in the way.. there is Protocol in how to get around that!
  • 2.  Short Lived - She pities them, of course.  Their lives are so woefully short.  But she didn't dislike them until she came to Askavi, and saw what the Reparations had done to her people.  Hayll and Dhemlan, of course, have survivors that remember what happened to them.  The short lived, however, have had entire generations come and go since Askavi harmed their people.  The idea that Short Lived Territories helped bankrupt Askavi to the point that her people are so desperate is.. infuriating.
  • 3.  Being Expected to Rule -  She is young, and still learning.  But what she is certain of is that not every Queen is suited for Ruling.  She WANTS to serve her people, and she WANTS to help the land.. but she's not certain she is suited to rule anything 'larger' than a Village.  What about her, other than her Caste, suggests she would be good at it at all?  After all, it was a Queen that started the Great War.. and it was a Queen that created the Storm.  It was a Queen's inflexibility in Rihland that led to Kalvar Elbremov destroying everything she knew - and now here in Askavi?  Well, she would rather not add to the list of Queens that make poor choices.

    Fears:
  • 1.  Causing Others' Deaths - In Rihland, she had Escorts everywhere she went.  But she didn't feel as if that were as necessary as her escorts made it seem.  In Askavi.. she knows it is necessary.  The dangers are real, and they are always present.  The idea that she might survive at the expense of an Escort terrifies her, especially as she knows it is just a matter of time.
  • 2.  War - In the past, the Great War was driven by the desires of the Red Queen.  Perhaps it is because she was born in Rihland, or that she travelled through other Territories, but Talyrian doesn't see War as a viable option in most situations.  Nothing but suffering results from War, and if your enemy is long-lived, war is Self-Sustaining as they will always seek vengeance.
  • 3.  Jhinka - These monsters.. she had hope that they would be less common when she left Rihland.  Finding that there are uncountable numbers of them in Askavi terrified her.  She can't fly away.   If there is a swarm, she will likely die beneath their teeth and claws.. and she has nightmares about it.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Queen's Gift -  She can feed the land as Queens are meant to, but her Gift is particularly good at increasing the output of precious metals from mines.
  • 2.  Passing Through Objects - She can't fly - which cuts off quite a few escape routes.  As such, she has been drilled relentlessly most of her life in finding unusual ways to get away from attackers.  She's gotten very good at it - to the point that it is almost reflexive.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Vanishing - It's infuriatingly embarrassing, and there has been more than a few who hold it against her in her life, but she can't seem to store more in her Cabinet than a Jewelless member of the Blood.
  • 2.  Mind Delving - Trying to dip into other people's heads leaves her disoriented, confused, and nauseated.  Worse, she finds herself worrying that she'll get lost in their minds, unable to pull herself out.

History:
There is a clear line of 'status' amongst Eyriens.  First there is the Winged Pure Bloods.  Then there is the Winged Mutts.  Then .. there are the Wingless.  It's a clear line, not usually able to be argued with.

But then there is Talyrian.  A pureblooded Eyrien.. born without wings.  Fortunately for her, she was born with the clear scent of Queen - and so she was not abandoned or killed by an angry mother.  Especially as her father immediately Bonded to his newborn daughter.

His love, his care, and his insistence on her being treated well is the only reason she survived.  Her mother was furious over birthing a wingless creature - and she took 'care' of her daughter only because she was a Queen.

Talyrian grew up knowing this.  In an effort to ensure that she had a less miserable childhood, her father often escorted her to the Queens of small villages and districts to help her gain the Craft Training she needed.

He called on her brother Drenkar to come help her learn her Protocol, both as Queen and as Escorted.  It was clear from early childhood she would always need at least one Escort.  Rihland had its own Jhinka issue, not to mention the occasional flare of violence from the locals.

She became a gold mine for the Queen she was fostered to.  Quite literally, as it turns out, because she had a good talent for increasing the output of the mines in the mountains.  That talent ensured that the Queen of the small village she fostered into gave her some small measure of relief from the constant sensation of judgement - she was regarded, at least, with something similar to the short-lived Queens.  Like a more beloved dog.  It was humiliating but.. it could have been worse.

She grew to love helping the Queens.  She grew to love assisting, not ruling.  She was put into the Village Queen's Second Circle after her Offering.  The Court provided two Escorts.  They weren't Bonded to her, but they certainly did have dedication.  She grew to love them, in her own way, but she also grew to worry that they might die protecting her someday.  She's seen the results of Jhinka attacks - and it wasn't pretty.

Her brother and father stayed with her - her mother was more than happy to remain at the Keep.  That was what spared them the day that Kalvar Elbremov destroyed the leadership of the Territory.  He decimated the Keeps - and amongst the population of the Keeps was her mother.  Her brother was the first to broach the subject of running.

Her escorts agreed.  She didn't necessarily agree with them - but at the same time she wasn't willing to risk having Kalvar Elbremov come after each Village or District either.  So she packed a small bag, going along with the only remaining members of her family.  They paid their way through Little Terreille to use the Gate, and used the last of their funds to pay off the people in Raej at the other end.

From there it was a hectic and embarrassing flight - because her Escorts picked her up and carted her in their arms.  She was humiliated by the necessity of it, and had no choice in the decision at all.  Still, she was excited to see the fabled Homeland.  And terrified that her lack of wings would cause her even more trouble there.

That worry faded a little when they crossed into the borders and she saw how desperate her people were for food and comfort.  She felt the need - the obligation - to help her people.  When she learned of WHY things were so desperate?  Of how reparations paid to Territories in Terreille had bankrupted them, how the Queens couldn't keep up, how the Jhinka swarms were getting bigger and bigger..

She was still terrified, and still all too aware of the distaste that even the Landen held for an Eyrien born Wingless.  But she was also furious.  So she shelved her fears, at least in front of others, and rolled up her sleeves to do what she could to assist.  She needed to assist these people, her people.  It was unlikely she'd be granted a Court - and she was silently relieved at that thought - so she chose instead to start wandering to the places that needed her most.  Her father, her brother.. they weren't exactly happy with that decision.

For the first time in her life? She put her foot down with the both of them, insisting that THIS was her purpose.  Food, metals, wealth.. these are the things she can bring to Askavi.  She just prays that it will be enough.  And with Fayrian, and the assistance of the Landen of Askavi?  Maybe she can even manage it.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
They had to rest.  Or rather, her Escorts and Brother had to rest.  She and her Father were quite the load to cart.  Although, she was definitely moreso.  Her father, at least, still had his wings.

She didn't look at any of them as they landed, fighting to keep the shame off her face.  It was bad enough she had to be carted around like a child.  It was worse that they had to be SEEN doing so.

Fortunately, they knew her embarrassment about it all.  They didn't pester her about it, though Adolar followed just a few steps behind her.  She was used to that.  Adolar was good at remaining quiet, at giving her time to get over how terrible being who she was happened to be.

She stared out towards the trees, towards the stone of the mountains.  It was so similar, and yet so very different from her home.  That helped.  She'd always found solace before.

But now?  Now the land was starving.  A screaming child beneath her feet - and the idea of having to find a way to placate it filled her with fear.  She knelt down, brushing her fingers over the soil.

Winter..

She brought her hand up, standing and turning to face the oncoming footsteps.  Queen.

It was a clear bell in her head, her nostrils flaring at the scent.  Queen with wings.. as usual.  She inclined her head anyways.  Old habits - and really, it was safer that way.

"You're new here."  It was not a question.  It was a statement.  So Talyrian nodded, running her fingers up into her hair.

"Talyrian Zima."
"Fayrian Avilor."

She gave a light smile, relaxing a little as she watched the Queen watch her.  There wasn't that .. that sensation of judgement or superiority.  Which she was relieved by - very relieved.

"It's so.. empty here."
"Yes.. you can't feed the land without the proper rituals here.  The land will take it all."
"All?"
"All."  Fayrian knelt down near where she'd been touching the ground, and she settled beside her.

She couldn't help but stare at it, somewhat flabbergasted.  The soil was dark enough to look plenty fertile.  It should have been fine.  So how could it be dying, unless..

Unless Queens weren't feeding it?  But how could that be?

"It is a Queen's place to feed the land.. It is our duty.  How could.."
"Not enough of them.  The Landen do what they can but.. "

This was supposed to be a shelter.  This was supposed to be a place where her family could start over again.  Instead..  Instead it was a place that would demand more of her than she'd ever thought she'd have to give.

It is a Queen's place to feed the land...

"How can I help?"
