Personality

Personality:
Scar is Eyrien, and that means he's active. He takes it further than most, though: there's nothing Scar hates more than being still for more than a certain, very small, amount of time. Scar wants to be moving and shaking most of the day, and absorbs information best if he hears it while doing something. It's not that he intends to be rude, though he knows he definitely can be. It's only that he really just can't be still without it becoming the overwhelming focus of his life at that moment, a distraction to the exclusion of all else in his life. He can manage, if he has something to do with his hands, but Eyrien discipline is not very forgiving. Still, given his druthers, he'll sit and knit while attempting to sit still and pay attention. Is it manly? No. But his mother likes it.

While Scar knows protocol, he doesn't live and die by it, except when it benefits him. It tends to benefit him when it comes to mouthy women wearing their sun-hats to the garden and taking naps on their moontime. Scar prefers bluntness to fancy words, though he knows as a diplomat his job kind of is fancy words. He's honest about things, and doesn't make promises that he intends to break (at the time). Though he's blunt, he's not mean about it on purpose. Sometimes he doesn't think before he speaks, because he's young and he hasn't learned all that good shit yet. His assignment as a guard for the Eyrien diplomat is focused more on his fighting ability than his social graces; they want to prevent a repeat of the wings-in-a-box problem, which explains why one of the Darker Warlord Princes in the Territory was sent alongside Telenar. Before the Purge, Purple Dusk wasn't a notably Dark Jewel, but after the Purge... Well, it is.

Scar is smart, but he's not wise. In intellectual exercises he acquits himself well, but it's the problem of the tomato: he can tell you it's a fruit but he would earnestly attempt to put it in a fruit salad if not stopped. He thinks everyone is as rational about things as he is, except women, who tend to be a little bit silly in his good-natured opinion. While he can generally be trusted to assume the best of people, he also jumps to conclusions like he's a professional: if it's a fruit, surely it belongs in the salad with the rest of them. Wait, why are you shouting??

Despite all of this, Scar does have a strong sense of gravitas. He doesn't always follow Protocol, but he knows the duties of a male like they're written on his heart. It is his earnest goal as a Warlord Prince and as a man to protect everyone he can, and to do right by them where possible. He can be quite scary in his pursuit of the proper and most honorable course, and reacts with a lot of shouting when he thinks someone under his protection is doing something they shouldn't or that his turf (or his people) are being tread upon. His violence is only directed at those he loves when he perceives imminent danger to them, but those who aren't family, friends, or lovers had best watch their back. He doesn't brook with intrigues and his style is very much destroy the threats and let the Mother sort them out.

He is, of course, the only living child out of four. His parents had had three sons before the Purge and had the Purge never happened, he would have never been born. Scar is the sole hope for carrying on his family name, and unlike his many responsibilities, this is something he doesn't want. He wants to live for himself, to become the ideal of Eyrien manhood that he perceives as necessary for this new world, but his parents demand he fall into line with their mold and live life on their timeline. Scar wants nothing to do with that, but his honor and love for his family won't let him say no. Which leaves him in something of a dilemma: to follow where his gut says he should go, or listen to the people who hold his heart?

Likes:
  • Knitting - Scar is a pretty talented fibercrafter. He can knit and crochet with the best Dena Nehelean grandmother. Like, most of his sweaters are clearly meant for Eyriens with wider shoulders and wing-slits, but he's got frog clasps down and doesn't shy away from gods-eyes and rosettes.
  • Roses - Scar likes gardening. He thinks it's fun. He particularly likes growing roses, because they're his mother's favorite flower, and also because roses are metal as fuck. He knows a lot about rose-growing and a lot about rose-specific horticulture, which is useful because otherwise the mountains of Askavi are a shit place to grow any kind of delicate flower.
  • Fights - Scar likes to spar. See Scar spar. Scar will fight anyone, anywhere, any time, on any precedent, or even without one. Scar will fight you and your father, but probably not your mother, unless she gets super salty. Scar is a really good fighter, too. Not the best in Askavi by a long shot, but he's good enough to take down anyone who hasn't trained into it since he could walk, and he likes getting to show off. Plus, it's good exercise.
Dislikes:
  • Teensy tiny doorways - Scar is tall, and he's used to living in Eyrien eyries, where the doors are fucking tall enough for his wings. In the Short-lived Territories, there is no goddamn space for his wings. Everything is made for people without wings, which makes him annoyed, and then makes him sad that he's annoyed, because of course, the poor bastards don't have any wings to account for.
  • Eyrien arrogance - There's a lot of people back home who think Askavi ought to rule the whole damn Realm, but that attitude got their people crushed and caused a lot more harm than it was worth. Scar's got his fair share of the arrogance that marks his people, but he's willing to hear and learn and change, and that's the sort of attitude that Scar thinks is appropriate. This unbending Askavi knows best, Askavi IS the best attitude promoted by many of his contemporaries is patently untrue and it annoys him. He's proud of his homeland and he wants it to succeed, but it was a sick place for a long time and the effects of that sickness are still rolling through Terreille. Asking it to return to its place on top of the ash heap is like asking a man newly recovered from consumption to make the darkest Runs.
  • The Runs - Speaking of the runs, what the fuck. Yeah, trick flying is cool and all, but trick flying with a side of death? No fucking thank you. He is literally never going to be fighting anybody in the Runs, and you can't fucking fight in the Runs anyway, so while this speed and precision exercise is an interesting intellectual exercise it's literally just an intellectual exercise, because Scar isn't fucking stupid enough to go hang out in the Runs.
Fears:
  • The return of the Askavi war machine - Scar doesn't remember what it was like to live under the rule of the Ranosi Queen. He was born four years after the Purge. He doesn't remember, but he has seen her effects across the Askavi in which he grew up. Broken Queens, Broken Warlords, Broken Healers (which were the worst). Families torn to shreds, limbs severed by enemies, minds broken by the unrelenting power of Witch. He has, over his lifetime, seen Askavi spiral deeper and deeper into a depression, has seen people he loves starving due to lack of Queens with the Jeweled power to feed the land. If someone else with a similar drive to conquer as the Red Queen came to the throne, he knows that they could find enough Eyriens who were hungry and desperate enough to ravage the Realm again. And he is terrified of what he would have to do if that were ever to happen.
  • His lack of discipline leading to deaths - Scar has had it beaten into him that he's undisciplined, with fists and words and sometimes both. Lack of discipline in war means death, and a Warlord Prince is looked to as a battlefield leader, so his lack of discipline would be translated to the men following him. Scar fears that someday his need to move will move people he is responsible for right to their deaths.
  • No Eyrien Queen Dark enough to repair Askavi ever coming forth - It's been 192 years since the Purge, almost two centuries. There has to be, somewhere, an Eyrien Queen wearing something Darker than the fucking Summer-sky, someone Dark enough to repair the Territory and make it the green place that Scar has been told about in his childhood stories. For about a year, he was able to relax--Gillian Yatskaya was a half-breed but she did wear the Sapphire. Now she's gone, and he's stuck wondering again if Mother Night is punishing Askavi for their arrogance in past years. He holds no ill-will towards Illyrian Kriat but he needs there to be an Eyrien Queen who can repair the Territory, somewhere, someday...

    Craft Strengths:
  • Combat Shielding - Scar uses his combat shields to reflect projectiles, turning the strike back on the person who attacked him first.
  • Finishing Kills - Though Scar has never had the opportunity to practice it, and only really knows the theory behind it, but he has a latent talent for it.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Vanishing and Conjuring Objects - Sometimes they just disappear. He doesn't know where they go. They're just fucking gone.
  • Communication Craft - If Scar isn't actively talking to you, he tends to get distracted and drop the call. When he's the one supporting the thread, you need to keep him really interested to leave the line open. Even if he is paying attention, his lack of ability to focus on one thing for much more than a minute means that it's like a cell call with poor reception. Sometimes, when he is hyperfocusing on something else, he won't even realize someone is attempting to open a thread with him. Like his ability to vanish and conjure, Scar's ability to communicate psychically cannot and should not be relied upon.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Orisian Pecheneg, Broken witch, 2905
Father: Mannar Kalashnikov, Broken Warlord, 3,542
    Siblings: Rohnar Kalashnikov, deceased
    Hanvar Kalashnikov, deceased
    Merihar Kalashnikov, deceased

    History:
Scar was one of a handful of "Purge children," being children born in the immediate aftermath of the Purge to parents who had lost their heirs and families. His parents, perhaps feeling too heart worn to pick a name to honor Scar's deceased elder brothers, named him for what he was: the scar left behind when the healing was done.

His home life was incredibly quiet. His mother was a shade of herself, his father solemn as he tried to teach his only living child the morals he remembered from before the rule of the Ranosi Queen. Scar picked up on this solemnity, even as a young Warlord Prince, and though he was incredibly physically active he wasn't very shouty about it. They always encouraged his possessive tendencies, but tempered them with an exacting knowledge of Protocol. He was encouraged to care for his mother, to learn the sticks and combat, but when he crossed a line Mannar's incredibly unpredictable temper would explode. In his heartsickness over the deaths of his three sons, he had come to believe that if someone had simply taught the Ranosi Queen better, the entire war would have been avoided, and his sons would live. So Scar, though he would never descend to a Dark Jewel and would, theoretically, never rule anything at all, received the brunt of Mannar's desperation and drive to re-sculpt Askavi into what it was when Mannar was a young man.

With his Birthright Ceremony done with, Scar was sent to a hunting camp. A Warlord Prince with a Tiger-Eye was nothing to sneeze at, and his trainers worked him hard. He demonstrated an inability to sit still that many of them ascribed to his age, but what was met with mild frustration at eight was met with outright derision at twelve. By sixteen, when he still couldn't sit long enough to appease the hunting-masters, even his peers got in on it--the training flight often was punished for Scar's mistakes--and Scar was truly miserable. He did try, often, and very hard, to prove himself capable of sitting down and shutting up. Despite this, he never did quite succeed.

Still, after his Offering and the Purple Dusk, he was released from the hunting camps. He went home, and took up a position as a third-circle escort to one of the few remaining Queens. Eurian Rachminov was old, and had given up her position to a younger Queen before the purge. Her successor had died as Witch's wrath set through the Realms, much as Scar's brothers had, and in the aftermath the old broken woman had taken the throne back. She had nothing to offer the land, but Scar didn't hold that against her. Like so many Eyriens, he assumed there would be young Queens born to take up the reigns the older, broken Queens couldn't.

There were none. Scar didn't understand why, though he had noticed fewer children about than in his youth. The Queens with Darker Jewels had been broken in Witch's comeuppance for their arrogance. The ones who survived held birthrights in white, yellow, tiger-eye. Not enough to restore land that was being ravaged to pay the reparations demanded by the other Territories in Terreille. Even from his low position in a District Court, Scar could see the decline of the Territory, and it instilled in him a deep need to do proper justice to the stories of Askavi he'd been raised on. Not the Red Queen Ranosi's rule, but to the Queens before her, who hadn't overstepped their bounds and attacked other Queens and their Courts.

The reveal of Gravesend spurred Scar to leave Eurian's Court, to investigate this supposed safe enclave with a living Queen at the Summer-sky. It wasn't quite a ruling Queen's Jewel set, but she--and the rumored Sapphire half-breed--sparked Scar's curiosity. He wasn't disappointed or angry in the District for hiding; he only hoped that this was the start of a rebirth for the Territory. Except it wasn't; a diplomatic cohort went to Hayll and their wings were sent back in a box. For the first time, Scar knew what it felt like to be really powerless--not the feeling of being told to sit or stand or wait still by a training-master--to know that the men with whom he'd served in the lower Circles had died simply for being who they were.

When there next came an opportunity for a diplomatic escort, Scar volunteered. If his fellow Eyriens were to die, he at least wanted a chance to protect them--a chance to do good.

    Character in Play:
Scar held the spare set of sparring sticks in one hand and weighed how best to fit them into his pack. He was trying to be sensitive about the size of his luggage for this diplomatic trip, since he couldn't carry it in his own psychic cabinet and be sure of bringing it back out on the other side of the winds. One of his brothers would be taking up the burden for him, and Scar didn't want to take advantage. Once he'd packed necessities--clothes, for travel and for formal occasions, and the sticks he wore tucked between his wings--he'd started weighing the non-essentials. Unfortunately, he hadn't figured on his mother hearing about his decision to join the diplomatic party.

    "Scar," said Orisian, "You can't."

They'd been going round and round about this for hours at this point, or it felt that way to Scar, who had a limited but vested interest in his mother's opinions on what he could and couldn't do. "The last party they sent came back in pieces," she stressed, "I couldn't lose you that way. I won't lose you that way. You're my only child left, there won't ever be another." That was true. Rohnar, Hanvar, Merihar: His three older brothers, a mystery except that they were the figures he had to live up to. According to his mother, they'd been smart men, good men, strong warriors, but the Purge had eaten them all up.

The Purge was the reason he lived, and the reason he felt that he had to accompany the diplomats. If Askavi was forced onto another war footing, if they had to try to field the armies that had once smothered Terreille, there would be no Askavi left at the end. Even today, the few Queens still ruling were broken from their Jewels--except Illyrian Kriat and one or two rumored others--and everything else was Warlord Princes. Scar could die tomorrow in a witch-storm brewed up by the half-breed in Shalador; he didn't see the point in living his life scared. He'd heard rumors of a halfling Queen with the ebon-gray in Dena Nehele. Perhaps--this was a fantasy of his--perhaps he would bond to her and succeed in drawing her home, where she belonged, to the high mountains of Askavi.

His mother, he realized, had been talking while he brooded. He loved her, but it was time for him to go to meet his brothers-in-arms. "Mother," he said, putting down the practice sticks, placing his arms just above her elbows. "I love you. I will come home. If I don't, then that's what it is. This is important, not just for me, but for Askavi, so that we will never necessitate a Purge again. If I die, I do it so that there won't ever be another mother with four dead sons."

Scar leaned in and kissed Orisian on the head. "Now go find Father. I'll see you when I get back."
