Personality

Personality:

Lyli is a woman who appears stern and serious, and she is.   Unlike so many women in her caste, she lacks the softness that most people would associate with a healer, both in personality and in form.  Despite centuries of bearing strong and healthy children for her husband, she has never softened or rounded as so many women do.  Lyli credits this to her own personal fortitude to regain her svelt form after every birth and recognizes that the cost of bearing a Grey Jewel also has her body burning off some of that plumpness.

Lyli is stubborn and pigheaded, used to pushing and getting her way but not with the irritation of someone who is spoiled.  She pushes when the need to push is greatest and does not seek to subdue others for the sake of her own power but simply because she knows she is correct and has the quickest and more effective means of providing the resolution needed.  It isn’t often that you will find Lyli bowing to the orders of another, at least not within the Healer’s caste.  She prides herself on her expertise, her knowledge and her skill and can count on one hand in her life when she was wrong about a diagnosis or a treatment.

In matters of politics, she defers outside of the Healer’s Guild to the authority of her lover and the Queen they both serve, in that order.  Only Darr and Aur can command her attentions away from anything she views as a priority and even then only by matching her stubborn resolve with their own.  To question her is a personal slight that Lyli does not let go of very easily, because she views any questioning of her motives or decisions as a comment that belittles her competence and in some ways, Lyli hides her insecurities beneath her arrogance.  The only thing that she worries about more than the view of others is the relationship between her lover and his cousin.   Darr is bonded to Aur and she worries that someday that bond will pull him away from her permanently.  It is part of the reason she has agreed to serve as the Court Healer, to keep a hands on and close eye on them.   It isn’t that she believes that Darr will betray their bedroom pacts, but that his duty to his Queen will cause him to leave her behind.

She loves children, has always loved the thrill and feel of life within her.  Her craving for babies made her mother question whether she should have perhaps devoted her skills into midwifery instead of healing wartime injuries but such were the times, when war and death overshadowed peace and life.   Besides, Lyli suspected that she would have been tempted to steal away all the babies that she helped bring into the world but she would much more prefer the feel of the weight of a growing child in her own belly.  This need has been growing every year since the news of her children’s death reached her ears, and it wouldn’t be too far off the mark to assume her desire for more children stemmed from her subconscious wish to replace those missing children.

Likes:
  • Children - Lyli above all things loves children, craves children and it isn’t just children of her own.  Those who would have seen her tending the wounded or the ill might have seen her as a rough and cold, dosing out biting comments for those whose injuries were made by foolish actions but if a child is brought to her attention, it is almost like a completely different woman.  She is soft and kind, gentle speaking and gentle handed and woah be to anyone who brings harm to a child in her vicinity, for she is a vengeful woman.
  • Growing things- even though she wasn’t a healer, Lyli’s mother had an affinity to growing her own garden and it was a skill and passion she passed on to her only daughter.  Lyli’s need for control in all public matters of her life have turned the passion for gardening into an obsessive hobby, bent on figuring out how to grow the strongest and most potent plants through cross breeding and selective cultivating.
  • Being in control - Lyli is a strict taskmaster who expects no less than perfection in those uner her scope and in herself.  She doesn’t accept failure or excuses for anything when it comes to her caste and her craft.  Perhaps it is because of this need to control, to shape and mold her world that she has discovered her desire to be controlled and commanded in her private life with Darr.  From their first meeting, theirs has been a relationship based on her trust in his ability to give her the release from being so strong.
Dislikes:
  • Insubordination - Healers have to be focused and ready to take orders and go where needed at a moment's notice.  Since moving to Black Forest, Lyli has come to recognize that any resistance on the part of her Healers to her commands and directions could result in lives lost whenever the Jhinka attack.  Lyli expects much of herself and just as much of others to the point that she cannot tolerate excuses and laziness or the appearance of such from anyone of her Healers.  She would work herself to the bone if needed and she expects the same level of commitment in others.
  • Fighting - Not in the sense that a Healer might not like combat for the injuries that it can cause, but she doesn’t like the idea of the physical activity.  In fact, she finds it rather pointless.   Surrounded by warriors at all times, she finds it rather annoying and frankly obnoxious to hear nothing about how one sweaty man beat upon another sweaty man until one of them dropped from injury or death.  Of course, it would be considered very anti-Eyrien to voice these opinions out loud so she keeps these thoughts to herself, though barely contained whenever she has to listen to one of her patients crowing proudly over how their most recent injuries were sustained in the glorious heat of a fight.  She barely restrains rolling her eyes when Darrenar decides to regale her with his latest exploits, but only barely.
  • Cold weather - One of the things she doesn’t like about having moved closer to the mountains is the shift in temperature, especially in the winter.  At least in the Great Meadow, winters were mild but now in the Black Forest, there are brutally cold winds that come off the mountains that kill her most delicate herbal plants and it makes cultivating her gardens much more difficult.
Fears:

  • Darr’s bond to his cousin- Lyli’s experience with the pull and bonds of Queens has left her weary of Darrenar’s bond to his cousin.  She knows he loves her, but she has seen twice over with men in her life the effects that the Queen’s will has on a bonded male and has lost greatly both times.
  • Another war of Askavi - War brings death and destruction, particularly to her family and Lyli as both a woman and a healer does not want to lose anything more to another war.
  • Never having more children - Lyli craves pregnancy and the growth of children in her belly.  Unlike some women, she never misses the use of her craft when she is with child.  Her former husband had no issues with giving into her demands for another child and now that only three have survived and are beyond grown, she longs to hold a babe in her arms again.  Darrenar has been adamantly putting his foot down on the issue for most of the last century and Lyli is afraid that someday she may have to choose between her need to be a mother and the man she loves.
Craft Strengths:

  • Rebuilding bones- Lyli is a no-nonsense sort of Healer, training and growing through wars and attacks has given her a very strict and efficient view of her healing craft.  Nothing is more detrimental to a fighting warrior than a broken arm or leg that never heals to full capacity and Lyli has honed her skill to focus on the complete mending of bone so that Askavi’s sons are never left weak in front of their enemy.
  • Siphoning illness-  A benefit of her training, she is able to pull illness and poison from wounds and infected patients and use her craft to burn it harmless.  It was a skill she found very useful after the Purge, when weakened and broken men and women began to succumb to a variety of illnesses because of their weakened constitutions.  However, she lacks the finesse to make the process painless and most who seek her for this treatment have reached no other options.
Craft Weaknesses:

  • Sustained flying - As an Eyrien, she is born with the love of the wind beneath her wings, the freedom of soaring high above all and everything with the sky in her lungs and on her skin.  Unfortunately, despite the depth of her Jewels, Lyli lacks the talent that her Jewels should provide in achieving long term sustained flight.   For longer distance travels, she would do better on the Winds than on the wind, as she exhausts herself quickly.  At the most, she is able to glide upon thermals and winds for about twenty minutes at the most before having to land and rest for nearly double that time before she is able to take to the sky again.   She has managed to hide this failure with numerous excuses of being far too busy to indulge frequently in such things.
  • Intricate Healings - Lyli’s craft is a broadsword where a scalpel would be most effective and she has great difficulties stemming back the tide of her craft to a level of gentleness required for extreme trauma where too much craft could harm more than heal. What Lyli cannot do with craft she has learned and created numerous herbal tonics and remedies to be used for healing injuries that require a more delicate touch.

History:

Lyli was the last child and only daughter of a witch who served in the Province second circle and her lover, a Warlord Prince who was a courier for the Triangle’s most important messages.  While there was always great affection between them, neither wanted to be hampered by the complications of a formal marriage, especially with the hostile and cutthroat nature of the court in which they served.  A lover was nothing, but a wife was leverage and a weakness.  Still, Elarian bore her lover three healthy strong children, two boys who served in the Queen’s Guard when they came of age, and Lyliarian who had little interest in court politics and positions and instead followed her instincts and her passions as a Healer.   Lyli followed in her parents footsteps, rising from her Birthright with a bright Green Jewel and the promise of perhaps descending as far as the Grey when the time came for her offering.   The promise of such a strong and powerful Jewel led her parents to prepare for her future, using their political connections to aid her in rising status with the Healer’s Guild.

More than her Jewels, though being gifted with the hoped for Grey at her age of maturity and Offering was a significant advancement, Lyli’s rise had more to do with her skills as not only a healer but a leader of healers.  It was believed that she might even be called upon to take a seat in the Territory Court should the position ever become available.  The Red Queen was known for gathering the strongest and most talented to her and Lyli was certainly making her mark as such.  Even if such an opportunity had presented itself, Lyli would have politely declined.  She stood resolve in her decision that she would not let politics and prestige override her primary purpose, to become the best Healer in all of Askavi.

When the Red Queen took up the flag of battle, her father and brothers answered and joined in the ranks of the army, strong fighters all of them and willing to put their lives for the pride of Askavi.  Lyli had since met her husband, another warrior of great reputation and pride who relished the boon of having a wife who bore the Grey, commanded the respect of her caste and was eager to provide him with as many children as he could put inside her.  Lyli never loved her husband, but she was in awe of him, enthralled by his strength and skill and admired him for it.
As part of their marriage arrangement, despite the conventional matriarchal system, Lyli acquiesced to her husband's one stipulation that their eldest son bears his last name after paternity was established.  Being the last of his family line, it was important to Ardevar to have another male carry his name.  When the rest of his brothers passed on, Mas decided to honor his father's wishes and took on his name.

When time provided him the chance to return to her side, she was certain to find herself with child by the time he was called back to the battles and over the next eight hundred years, she provided him with eight healthy children, five sons, and three daughters.  All her sons were just as eager as their father to prove their mettle in the heat of battle and were sent to serve beneath his command as soon as they were trained and ready.  Lyli’s eldest daughter shared her caste and remained at her mother’s side, despite her desire to follow her father to the killing fields and use her considerable talents to aid him after the battle.   Lyli refused to allow her this and it was the one thing her father never tried to counter in his wife.  Lyli’s affairs were of the daughters and he ruled their sons.   In the truest tradition of mothers and daughters, Dharian never forgave her mother from keeping her back and blames her mother for the ultimate death of her father, idolizing his memory even until the present.  She even named her only child after him.

In those many battles and attacks, Lyli saw the death of her brothers and father during the invasion of Shalador and her mother perished when the Hayllian forces counterattacked after their borders were penetrated.  Shortly before the Askavi army was sent back to Hayll in response to this butchery of their women and children, Lyli’s husband returned home in the midst of a brutal Rut.   This last encounter left her with her last child, a sweet-faced and sweeter tempered little witchling.   Ardevar perished shortly after returning to the front.

On and on the wars and battles waged and Lyli tired of the fighting, heart aching for the family she had already lost.   When the Purge finally put an end to the endless campaigning of Askavi to take all the Territories under its large, dark wings, Lyli was caught exhausted and nearly drained from the endless parade of injured and dying that returned back within their borders.  With the last of her energy, she tried to protect her family by lifting a thin Green shield over her children in a desperate attempt to save them from the crushing blow of power.  What fell over them might have destroyed her Jewels if not for her sons, who rose up with shields to protect their mother and sisters and paid the penalty for their actions with their lives.   Her sons, warriors whose training was rooted in protecting their family and the women within, layered their own power over her own, absorbing most of the blunt of the blast that might have otherwise shattered through even their mother’s strength.  Warriors protected, healers healed and in dying, they fulfilled their greatest purpose.   Lyli’s second oldest daughter, who had not been present with her family and thereby protected by all the layers of shielding of her family, took her life, the shattering of her Jewels a shock too great for her to handle and she threw herself from a high peak rather than life her life broken and in pain.

If not for her eldest, and her two remaining children, Lyli might have broken herself under the weight of her grief but she was determined to not leave her children complete orphans and threw herself into her work with a single-minded obsessive focus that some thought bordered on a form of insanity.  She assumed a position with the Great Meadow Province court as the head of the Healers for the crippled province, who had been so devastated by the loss of so many warriors that Landen uprisings and Jhinka invasions were giving her constant work to focus upon.

It was here, in the time after the Purge where Lyli’s strength and skill as a healer really began to soar.  A Dark Jeweled witch of any caste that survived unscathed by the wrath of the Purge was a rare thing, a witch who wore darker than the Red was almost doubly so.  It wouldn’t be until the next generation of Eyriens were born that any of the darker Jewels began to appear once again, and even then it was few and far between.  Her own grandchildren did not fall so far in the abyss as she did.  Wearing the Grey also presented her as a strong power to a people who were recovering from a blow not only to their forces but to the heart of their country.  Lyli was pressed to accept invitations to various courts if only to have the strength of her Grey at their backs as a support to advance their own causes, a move that she found reprehensible.  Her Grey was to be used to heal, to mend that which pride, ego and the Purge had rent from the very territory.

For the next several centuries she held strong to these ideals, pushing her strength towards the northern areas where the Jhinka were still a strong and ever-present threat, and used the power of her Jewels towards the creation of newer and stronger healing brews that could and would last for longer periods and could be stockpiled by the mountain guards who were the primary line of defense against these attacks.  She reorganized and restructured the healers who remained after the wake of the Purge, and began instituting the use of non-healers with healing skills to fill in the gaps filled by the loss of Jeweled or casted healers to deal with the overwhelming odds of injured and needs.

She chose to focus her attentions in the district that bordered the Black Forest because of the rich soil to grow her special plants, as well as to provide aid should the Jhinka decide to consolidate their attacks to the north when she first met Darrenar a few decades after the Purge.   Surprised by the arrival of a strange Warlord Prince to her isolated home, she realized that he was a young man in the midst of his first Rut and when his senses honed in on her scent, he came at her with a ferocious need that rendered her stunned.  For three days he kept her a prisoner in her house, in her bed and it was all she could do to hope that some poor soul wouldn’t come seeking her aid at such an inopportune time.  Rather than fear, she found herself caught up in the most passionately dangerous coupling of her long life and when she woke and found him missing from her bed, long since departed - she felt anger that he would simply leave without any notice or note.   For weeks she pined for him, her body remembering the strength of his body against hers, the way that she surrendered to his command and desire in a way that she had never done with any other lover.

When he finally returned, seeing him inflamed and enraged her and she gave him a piece of her mind; leaving after such an encounter without even his name or how to find him, that her body ached for his in a way that even her husband had never been able replicate and she demanded to know why he left.   Thus began the long, tempestuous, passionate and complicated relationship that she would have with Darrenar, a very young but very adventurous Warlord Prince of the Black Forest Court.  After only a short time together, Lyli was determined to never let him go from her life and followed him back to the north where she pledged her service to the Queen of his court, who was Darrenar’s cousin.  Because of her knowledge of Darrenar’s predilections and his cousin’s shared interests, she assumes a place as the Court Healer for Aur, bound in the secrecy of the Queen and the First Escorts tastes that are a little unorthodox.   It is a two-way street of secrecy because the revelations of her own interests could cost her authority and leadership with the other Healers.

Character in Play:

Lyli folded another gown carefully and placed it in her trunk, humming softly to herself as she turned to her wardrobe to reach for another article of clothing when a loud bang sounded from the front of the eyrie.

“MOTHER!” she heard shouted, followed by the heavy footfall of boots on stone tile.   She didn’t bother responding, she had been anticipating this encounter all morning and was rather a little surprised that Dharian hadn’t come storming in sooner.  She wrapped a pair of satin slippers in a towel and tucked them into the side of the moving chest as her daughter appeared in her bedroom doorway, face red and furious.

“Don’t huff Dhar, your nostrils flare when you’re angry and it's very unattractive,” she said mildly, not bothering to look up at her eldest child as she placed a pair of pants neatly in the chest.  Dhar’s hand slapped the open door, and Lyli looked up at the sound, seeing the elegantly scrawled calligraphy on the thick crisp paper.  She recognized it of course, it was her own handwriting.  “Ah good, you’ve been informed.” she said simply before turning her attention back to her packing.

Dharian stomped her heeled foot on the floor impatiently, “What sort of nonsense is this?!”

“Well, I thought you would be happy darling, with my departure I’ve recommended you to take over as the Court Healer and I don’t see any reasont that the Queen and court wouldn’t approve.  You’re an excellent Healer, you have been serving in the second circle for most of your life and know the ins and outs of everyone’s medical history.  Besides, you always wanted to remain closer to court instead of being sent out to the borders to deal with Jhinka wounded.” Lyli’s tone was still very calm and matter-of-fact.

“That’s not the point, I’m not here because of your recommendation but your departure.  You haven’t said one word to me about this decision.” Dharian said shortly, pursing her lips disapprovingly.  Lyli raised one eyebrow, “I wasn’t aware I needed your permission nor your approval to make decisions concerning my life.  Grown that you might be, I am still your mother and elder.”

“Then behave like it,” Dharian bit sharply.  Lyli carefully closed the lid of her trunk and turned, her golden eyes ice cold as she stared down her daughter, “Watch it witchling, my patience with your insolence is quickly reaching an end.”

“It’s because of him, isn’t it?!” Dharian continued, crossing her arms, “You’re leaving to be with that half grown pup of a boy!   Mother, how could you?!  You have grandchildren older than him!  It’s scandalizing and embarrassing!  The whole court is talking about your obsession with this child!”

Lyli sat down on the top of her chest, “And the opinion of gossiping sycophants and jealous asskissers matters to me why?  Or perhaps you are only assuming there’s all this gossip going on about who I keep in my bed, because its not the court that is offended but you?” Dharian huffed and her nose did that very unattractive flare again.

“It’s humiliating to see you following him around like some moon-brained witch just off her Virgin night and too stupid not to fall in love with the man who provided the service.  You are a powerful, respected Healer with the clout and authority to be called to the Territory court but you can’t see past the end of your…” Lyli’s stare caused her voice to drop off before she could finish the thought though it was only momentary. “I mean seriously Mother!  Think of your family!  Think of what Mas and Seli will have to go through when they are subjected to the ridicule of having their mother giving up all she’s worked for to chase some baby.  I mean, we were all very indulgent when you took him as a lover.  I mean, what woman hasn’t enjoyed the stamina of a younger man but it’s a phase, a passing fancy to resolve an itch.  It’s not someone you seriously consider a committed relationship with.”

Lyli smirked, “Well, we haven’t discussed official commitments yet, but if you’re making the suggestion…” Dharian’s mouth opened to squawk some more but Lyli silenced her with her hand held up.  “First of all, what I do and who I do it with is none of your business, it’s not ANYONE’s business and if anyone is bothered by it, then to hell with them and their opinions.  What goes on between Darr and I is strictly between us.  Secondly, if news of my escapades is important enough to reach the mountain guards, then I will be rather impressed and even then your brother isn’t the sort of man to care about idle gossip.  Thirdly, Sel and her husband adore Darr, we frequently attend meals at their farm.  The only person who seems to be bothered by our relationship is you!”

Now she was angry, standing nose to nose with her daughter, staring her down furiously.  That would have been enough for any of her healers to back down and quickly, but while Dharian was the spitting image of her father, she had all her mother’s stubborn nature and would not back down when she thought she was in the right.  “Admit it daughter, you’re angry not because of Darrenar’s age or inexperience, though that’s only true in one area,” and she gave her daughter a scandalously smug smile, “you’re angry because he’s not your father.”

“Of course!!!” Dhar shouted in her face, “You are dishonoring the memory of Father with this...this whelp!  Father was a great man, a great general, a legendary leader of men in Askavi’s armies.  His name will live on in stories and history until the end of time.  Carrying on with this man, you are spitting in his good name and his sacrifice to our people!”

Lyli stared surprised at her daughter before laughter bubbled from her mouth, “Oh,my poor sweet daughter.   Your father was a great many things, and yes he was a great general and soldier but he is not the legendary man you have created in your head.  He was flawed in ways that you don’t want to acknowledge and before you place me in the role of some harlot because I have sought out my own pleasure, you should be aware of a few important facts.  In all our years of marriage I was impeccably faithful to your father, but I imagine he left quite a slew of bastards littered between here and Hayll.  He was always attracted to all forms of conquest, and I suspect plowed his way through the thighs of quite a few women.   Ours was never a deep love, or even a passionate romance.  Ours was an arrangement of convenience, we both knew it and both were pleased with it.  I got you and your siblings and he got to crow over his fertility and virility to his men and have numerous children to carry his lineage.   Secondly, I didn’t even look at another man after his death, not for almost four hundred years.  Not out of any great loyalty to his memory mind you, but because no man was able to capture my interest long enough to want him in my bed.”

Lyli turned her back to Dharian in a finalizing motion, opening her chest again and commencing with her packing. “Take the recommendation or not, I care little.  I’m leaving tomorrow and going to the Black Forest court where I have already accepted a contract with the Province Queen.   You are more than welcome to stay and help me pack, or you can walk out the door you slammed open when you came in but I won’t stand here and waste time on your bitching and whining over matters that don’t concern you and you can’t change.   I don’t need or want your blessing for my decision.”

Dharian stared her down with fury before spinning on her heel and stomping out of the room.  Lyli listened to her footfalls until they disappeared out the door which she obviously slammed with great gusto to prove her ire as she departed.  Shaking her head, Lyli returned to her packing.

“Just like her father, he could throw the most spectacular tantrums when he didn’t get his way too,” she said with a slight laugh.
