Distinguishing Features:
Illyrian looks distinctly Eyrien in every way, from her straight black hair to her golden eyes to her large dark wings. She is considered beautiful by the pure blooded standards of the Eyrien race, standards she herself does not define beauty by. She is often concerned that her appearance is dull and predictable. She looks like hundreds of other Eyrien women. Illyrian is convinced that if she were not a Queen, her appearance would not be remarkable in any way whatsoever.

Personality

Personality:
Illyrian exudes a quiet confidence about her, a pride that is present regardless whether she is attending to matters of Court or working in her garden. She does not boast of her accomplishments. To the contrary, Illyrian believes an Eyrien should not need to boast of the good or heroic deeds they have done. Boasting lessens the deed. It should show in the way they move, live, and interact with others. A skilled warrior shows his pride in his skill on the battlefield by properly caring for his weapons and living with the bravery and ferocity appropriate for an Eyrien male, not by telling inflated tales of his accomplishments. An Eyrien female does so by approaching her daily life with grace and the knowledge that she can face any challenge and survive.

These are the ways of a warrior race, or at least they used to be. Her grandmother taught her what it means to be an Eyrien female: to be the daughters, wives, and mothers of the fiercest warriors the Blood has ever seen. The challenges and sacrifices that are required speak to the need for a strong stomach, a fierce temper, and a fearless heart. Illyrian has the fierce temper, but the strong stomach and fearless heart are much more difficult for her to achieve. When she isn't feeling it, she fakes it. Some days she only fakes it a little. Other days, she fakes it the entire time. This leads her to feeling like a fraud. Her people deserve a Queen who really is all they dream of, not one who just pretends to be. They have her instead, so she does the best she can by them.

Illyrian works ceaselessly to care for her land and the people who live there. They are her responsibility. They thrive or perish based on the choices she makes, something she takes very seriously. Illyrian follows her grandmother's belief that if the land thrives, the people will too. She spends time outside listening to the land everyday. Court matters come second to paying attention to what the land has to tell her. The rituals she takes part in to nourish the land take place every season, not once a year, and she often gives her blood to the land in between the official rituals as well. She has carved out a small piece of Askavi as her own tucked away deep in the mountains. Even though the rest of Askavi starves for the touch of a Queen, Illyrian's homeland thrives.

She is practical in the way she lives and the way she approaches matters of the Court. She lacks patience for those who do not exhibit basic common sense. She lacks patience for those who disrespect the old ways of Eyrien culture. She lacks patience for those who cannot carve out a place for themselves in the world. In truth, she is a rather impatient person at heart and has high expectations of those around her. She holds herself to these same high expectations and therefore feels completely justified in doing so.

Illyrian's temper is something the men in her family and her Court go out of their way to avoid. Her instinctual response is to go outside where she can fly and be close to the land, the only thing that really soothes her. If she is unable to get outside for whatever reason, she often resorts to throwing things. If it is a person who is blocking her from leaving, she will not think twice of using Craft against them to get free if whatever object she threw at them did not make her point clearly enough. Her anger burns hot and fast and once she can get outside and fly, she calms down fairly quickly. She has learned after one particularly disastrous ruling that she should never make important decisions while she is angry, but always wait until she has calmed down and returned to a more logical state of thinking.

Likes:
  • 1 Askavi. Illyrian has a deep passion for her homeland. The events of the last few centuries have wounded Askavi deeply. Illyrian has kept her small area of Askavi thriving in the best manner that she can, but she knows that beyond her borders, Askavi suffers greatly.
  • 2 Flying. An Eyrien Queen is connected to the sky as well as the earth. It's more than the simple love of freedom that flying allows, although that is certainly a factor. It's an enhancement of her connection to the land. Illyrian can fly high above the land she cares for and understand what is happening from a different perspective. She can touch the tops of the trees as well as their roots, connecting with the forest around her home in a way that is purely Eyrien.
  • 3 Her garden. Like all Queens, Illyrian loves being outside and spending time with the land. But for Illyrian, her garden is something she has tended for centuries, watching over it season after season. Garden is perhaps the wrong word... the borders of what Illyrian considers her garden spread into a forest she planted. She planted trees as saplings that are now hundreds of feet tall. Illyrian spends time outside in her garden no matter what the weather is, a fact the males in her life had to come to terms with long ago.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Being around those wounded in battle. Illyrian feels pity for those warriors who have been wounded in battle. She knows this is not the appropriate response, especially from a Queen. There is nothing shameful about being wounded on the battlefield. These warriors deserve respect, not pity, so she hides her reaction. It's tiring to do and she can only remain in their presence for so long.
  • 2 Being confined indoors. Illyrian wants free access to be outside at any point. If something or someone is stupid enough to stand in her way, she will do whatever is necessary to remove them. She likes having at least one exit available from any room she is in (preferably more) and will not allow someone to stand in a doorway or block her into a space.
  • 3 Askavi suffering for the benefit of other Territories. Illyrian understands the reasons behind the restitution payments that Askavi has been paying to the rest of the Territories in Terreille, but now, the other Territories flourish while Askavi suffers horribly under the financial burdens of paying for the mistakes of its past. Being as isolated as her small area is, Illyrian has never asked her Court to pay the taxes needed to support the restitution. If the Province Court realized this, they would be furious with her, but her people understand that she is taking a stand in order to better provide for her District. If it comes to it, they will fight to defend their Queen's choice.

    Fears:
  • 1 The fall of Askavi. Through everything that has happened, Askavi has managed to remain independent. Even with the restitution payments that are currently bankrupting the Territory, payments Illyrian refuses to make, Askavi has still managed to govern herself. With the loss of the Black Jeweled Warlord Prince, Illyrian is deeply worried that Askavi will fall and no longer remain autonomous. If there was a Queen with a dark enough Jewel to rule the Territory, wouldn't she have stepped forward by now?
  • 2 Miscarriage. Illyrian tried to become pregnant for nearly a century before finally giving up on her dream of being a mother. Now, somehow, she has conceived. The idea of losing this one chance to have a child of her own terrifies her so much, she often reaches the brink of panic. Her Healer has started giving her specific teas to soothe her nerves for fear the anxiety of losing her child will cause it to become a reality.
  • 3 That she will fail as a Queen. Illyrian holds herself to extremely high standards, standards that she knows she often does not meet. She fears she will fail the land and her people by not being what they need in a ruler. She wishes she could actually be the fearless leader that she pretends to be.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Queen's Gift. Illyrian's grandmother taught her how to care for the land in the old ways of the Blood. Her inherent gift has been enhanced with the old rituals long forgotten throughout Askavi. While the land through all of Askavi has suffered deeply, the forest contained within Illyrian's small, hidden away District thrives under her hand. Her blood and that of her grandmother's runs through the veins of the trees as sure as sap does.
  • 2 Queen's Bond. The bond of a Queen to those who serve her is strong and undeniable. With Illyrian, it is even more so. Those who choose to serve her gain even greater peace from being in her presence than they would from bonding to another Queen. This has been invaluable in a Court full of Eyrien warriors, trained from boyhood to be deadly opponents. This sense of peace can help clear their minds, pulling them back from the killing edge when tempers are running too high unnecessarily.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Riding the Winds. Illyrian feels cut off from the earth when she is riding the winds in a way she does not feel when she is flying. The earth and sky are interconnected, but the psychic roadways of the Blood are set apart. She feels disoriented and unsure of herself when riding the winds and gets extremely nauseated. She often loses her concentration. More than once she has had to land suddenly in a terrifying leap off the winds. Even if someone else is driving the coach, she gets dizzy and ill. She will always choose to fly in order to travel and resists riding the winds even when it is necessary.
  • 2 Offensive Craft. Eyrien females are not taught to fight the way their males counterparts are. It would be considered shameful for her to have the fighting ability of even the least skilled warrior. She knows how to defend herself by shielding, but the goal is to hold the shields until the Eyrien warriors can get to her, not to be able to fight her way out of any encounter.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Lurian Kriat Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Priestess (deceased)
Father: Ivanar Kriat Rose to broken Opal Warlord
Brothers: Galavar Kriat Rose to Opal Warlord Prince
Lyovar Kriat White to Tiger Eye Warlord (deceased)
Evar Kriat Yellow to Rose Warlord Prince
Vadanar Kriat Summer Sky to broken Opal Warlord
Grandmother: Klarian Kriat White to broken Tiger Eye Queen
Consort and husband: Eristovar Errsa Rose to Purple Dusk Prince Deceased
Daughter: Irinian Kriat Queen. Born 187 AP

    History:
Illyrian's father met her mother while serving in Klarian Kriat's First Circle. As he had no name of importance, he followed the old custom and took the last name of his Queen. The courtship of Ivanar and the Queen's daughter was long and drawn out. He was afraid to ask Klarian's permission to marry her only daughter. When Lurian went to her mother distraught over his not loving her enough to marry her, Klarian called him before her and demanded an explanation. She was shocked to learn he was afraid his request would be denied, believing himself not worthy of marrying his Queen's daughter. They were married shortly after.

Illyrian is the youngest of five children and the only girl. Her mother desperately wanted a little girl and was so happy when Illyrian was born. When Illyrian was four years old, her mother grew ill. The best Healer in the District served in her grandmother's Court, but even she was unable to do anything to help. The young Queen lost her mother that same winter. Her memories of her mother are extremely vague and colored heavily by the memories of her father and brothers, who worked together to raise her.

Her grandmother helped as well, but she was busy running her Court and didn't have as much time for Illyrian as the girl wanted or needed. Still, she grew up learning the acts of a Queen from the first time her little wings grew strong enough to carry her safely high into the sky. Klarian flew with her high above the land and showed her from the sky what it meant to be an Eyrien Queen, connecting to the very top branches of the tallest trees as easily as their roots. She drew the outline of their District with her finger, telling the young Queen that one day this land would be hers to care for and hers to protect. The people will live or die with the land. The land must be nourished, no matter the cost. That was a Queen's responsibility before all else.

It was in this environment, under the fierce protection of her father and brothers and the compassionate tutelage of her grandmother, that Illyrian grew into a strong young Queen. When she came of age and made her Offering, her grandmother took her into her First Circle to formally begin her training as her successor. It was clear to everyone that Illyrian would follow her grandmother to rule, but it was important she had a solid groundwork first. Time moves differently for members of the long-lived races. Illyrian spent several hundred years in her grandmother's First Circle, generations of short-lived Queens having risen and fallen during her training. When they both felt ready, Klarian stepped aside and Illyrian began her own rule. Klarian took a position in Illyrian's First Circle and has remained there, serving as Illyrian's trusted adviser.

Illyrian did not condone what the dark power on the throne of the Territory seat did in Askavi's name. The isolation of her Court allowed a certain amount of distance from what was happening throughout the rest of Askavi and the rest of the realm. Although it was not the Eyrien way to stand idly by, Illyrian's Summer Sky was not enough to take a stand against the Territory ruler. Most of her Court wore light Jewels as well. They chose an alternative battleground, one that involved fighting for their way of life by fiercely protecting the borders of her small area. Considering the snow capped mountains that surrounded them on all sides, this isolation was fairly easy to achieve. This isolation was helped a great deal by the deep magics of the Black Widows who serve Illyrian. They laid webs over the land and along the boundaries, making it difficult to find unless the intention was pure and not based in a desire to harm or control. After so many centuries of magic, the District lies all but forgotten in the snow capped peaks of Askavi.

The Purge hit Askavi particularly hard. Her family paid a terrible price to keep Illyrian safe. When the witchstorm subsided, Lyovar was dead and Vadanar, her father, and her grandmother had been broken back to their Birthright Jewels. The weeks after the Purge were extremely difficult. So many burials. So many broken and lost, searching for an answer where there wasn't one.

Illyrian worked hard to help her people rebuild their lives from the tatters Witch had left them in. She worked hard to heal the land as well. The land needed to heal so the people could. She couldn't repair the deep wounds in the hearts of her people, but she could repair the wounds in the land. Those first few years, she and her grandmother performed rituals to heal the land every dark moon. They still perform them every season, as opposed to the once a year ritual that is more common. The land still needs her strength, and the people need the land to thrive.

There was an influx in population after the Purge. Survivors whose families had been destroyed heard whispers of a Queen who was healing a small piece of Askavi and headed toward the mountains in search of her. The Black Widows webs allowed many to find her, but many more, fixed on destruction or domination, found themselves lost in the dark forests. Eristovar was one who made it through. A Purple Dusk Prince who had survived the Purge intact, he declared Illyrian his Queen the first time he laid eyes on her. She found a place for him at Court, as she did for the others who were clearly hers. He loved her from a distance for nearly ten years before Ivanar intervened, remembering his own fear of approaching Lurian and knowing the fear of rejection Eristovar was experiencing.

Illyrian had had various lovers throughout the centuries, but never one who stood out to her enough to consider marrying. Eristovar's gentle nature, so rare in Eyrien culture, won her over. She had plenty of warriors. What she needed was someone who could understand her and work with her as a partner to help heal her land. Illyrian accepted Eristovar as her Consort and it wasn't long after she accepted him as her husband as well. Ivanar's support of their relationship and Illyrian's people's fierce dedication to her went a long way to help with the acceptance of a man so clearly different from other Eyrien warriors.

Eristovar and Illyrian tried for nearly a hundred years to conceive a child, finally giving up. It was an extremely painful time for Illyrian. The Summer Sky Queen had to come to terms with the reality that she was never going to have a child of her own to hold and raise, to pass down all of her grandmother's teachings. She had a large brood of nieces and nephews, but as much as she loved them, it just wasn't the same. It's been several decades since they stopped actively trying to get pregnant. Neither Eristovar nor Illyrian ever began taking the contraceptive brew again. What was the point? If they couldn't conceive after a hundred years of trying, it would simply never happen. Until it did.

    Writing Sample:
Illyrian paced the length of the bedroom she shared with Eristovar like a caged animal. Considering they spent every night together, they had altered her suite of rooms to be their suite of rooms, intending to use the adjoining Consort's suite as a nursery. When they had failed to conceive, she had packed away the baby things in boxes, but had never been able to bring herself to get rid of them entirely. The rooms stood empty. Waiting.

Erist would be back any moment. He had been hovering over her for the last few days, so she had promised to consult the Court Healer about whatever slight illness she had if he would just leave the eyrie for a little while. Eyrie was perhaps an understatement. The great maze of rooms carved out of the side of the mountain was closer to a fortress than an eyrie, but the ruling Queen of this isolated area high in the cliffs had lived here as long as her grandmother could remember. It was simply referred to as The Queen's Eyrie.

Illyrian had spent her whole life living here, which was good, because finding her way around the massive complex would have been extremely difficult if she and her brothers hadn't spent endless hours racing through the caves when she was a child. Her entire Court and their families could live here if they chose, but many opted for smaller eyries of their own, which left an entire wing of the eyrie basically empty.

She paused in front of the over sized mirror that hung near her wardrobe. It was large enough that a tall Eyrien could properly see their wings in the mirror. She stared at her reflection, finally giving in to the urge to place her hands protectively over her abdomen. Erist burst into the room and she turned slightly to face him. He had always worn his heart on his sleeve, an unusual habit for an Eyrien male, and his concern was clearly written across his dark features. Illyrian wondered if it was linked to his being a Prince of the Blood and not a Warlord or a Warlord Prince. "What is it? What did the Healer say? It's more than just a stomach sickness isn't it? What's wrong?"

She opened her mouth to speak, but decades of unshed tears for the loss of this dream finally realized choked her. Instead of words, a loud sob escaped her lips. Erist's long stride covered the ground between them in seconds and he enclosed her tightly around the waist. She could feel the rising panic pouring off of him in waves. If she didn't tell him soon, he'd bring the whole Court down on top of them. "Stop squeezing me so hard! You'll squish the baby!" He froze, then slowly pulled away from her just far enough to look down into her eyes. She smiled through her tears and moved his large hand from her waist to her belly. "Are you ready to be a Papa, my love?"

Erist let out a fierce cry of joy and kissed his wife. Moments later a well muscled guard appeared in the open doorway holding an Eyrien warblade and settling into a fighting stance. Before Illyrian had a chance to stop him, Erist announced loudly, "The Queen is pregnant! Tell the Court!" The guard looked to her for confirmation, and she nodded, resigned to the fact that she was about to be overrun by an entire Court of fiercely protective Eyrien males. The guard smiled brightly and rushed off to share the news. She couldn't have kept it a secret long, but Illyrian had been hoping for a few more moments to herself before the onslaught of male attention. Even that thought could not take away from her joy, or the happiness of seeing it matched in Erist's gold eyes.

Why did this character became inactive? A long time ago in a land far from here, I retired Illyrian and Nik adopted her.

What will you do to prevent this character from becoming inactive again? Write all the plots!

What are your plans for this character? There are a number of current plots already in play with Illyrian, including the loss of her husband, raising her daughter, ruling with Drakkar, Endevar's return to Askavi, and the ongoing goal of her and Renvar not strangling each other. Additionally, there are incoming Territory wide plots that will involve all of the Province rulers and will create even more chaos and infighting. WOOT.
