Personality

Personality:
Fay was a kind and gentle woman once. She loved and laughed and nurtured the land and her family, but that was long ago. That was before the war and the witchstorm tore everything she loved away from her and damaged her chalice. Now, after centuries of dealing with her grief and her loss, Fayrian Avilor is no longer kind nor is she gentle. She is determined.

The world is fucked up, Askavi is dying, and Fay won’t let that happen on her watch. She’s not an idealist or optimistic about her chances of success, but she will fight until the bitter end of Askavi in every way she can. A Queen with no ability or training with weapons, that fight comes out in her words and her deeds. She holds everyone she meets to task and accountable for their actions. If they are not actively working to help save Askavi, Fay wants nothing to do with them.

Her greatest concern in her quest are not the Blood and their powerful Jewels, but rather those who cannot defend themselves: the Landen and the land. She is a Queen and her Broken Jewels do not change her desire to guard, cherish and nurture the land of her birth and the people on it. She refuses to even consider forming a Court again, the fear of another loss to great to stand, but damn if she won’t campaign for that which she holds so dear.

The frustration of no longer being able to truly Gift the Land or help Asakavi in the ways a Queen should leave Fay constantly prickly and irritated. Easy to anger, she can come off as rude when really she is just trying to get things done efficiently. She shies away from intimacy of any sort and tends to push people away when they try to get close. Her only exceptions are her one remaining Bonded, her few remaining family members, and Vondar. Even the Landen she campaigns for Fay keeps at arms length.

Beneath the sharp exterior though, hidden under all her grief and anger, still lies that gentle heart that loved fully and lost. In rare moments, the shell splits and one can glimpse that spark of kindness still buried deep inside.

Likes:
  • Freedom: the loss of her Jewels and her Court was a blow she is still recovering from, but there is a certain freedom she has gained from it. She likes being able to go where she wants and do as she pleases, even if the price was one she would never have chosen to pay.
  • Wind: Fayrian loves the feeling of the wind blowing through her hair. She loves hearing it howl over the mountains and down through the valleys that she loves. It makes her feel alive and makes her heart sing.
  • Landen: Even before she lost her Jewels she enjoyed their company, now she finds peace and understanding around them. She is passionate about their cause and genuinely cares for and respects her Landen friends.

    Dislikes:
  • Gardening: While she will bend herself backward to give even the small amount of Queen's Gift she still has to help the Landen, she herself no longer gardens. Fay was in the middle of working in her garden with her daughter when the witchstorm came and doing so now give her nothing but grief and flashbacks.
  • Cowards: She may not like the repercussions of the war, but she takes great pride in Eyrien unity and loyalty. She lost her husband to the war in Hayll, and thinks ill of all those who were not brave enough to stand with their brothers in arms. It got good men killed and they deserve to be punished. She also loathes those who took shelter from it in Gravesend. They hid themselves away instead of standing with their people. It is shameful and humiliates all Eyriens.
  • Children: They are the hope of the future, but they bring up too many bad memories for Fayrian. She can't handle being around them for long.

    Fears:
  • Another war: Fay has lost too much to the War Machine of Askavi, and will fight tooth and nail to make sure her Territory doesn’t do anything dumb like try to start another war. She knows she has little power or influence anymore though, and that worries her. Whether it be Askavi attacking Hayll, Hayll invading Askavi or the Jinka coming down upon them in waves, Fay fears another war.
  • Askavi starving to death: The land needs Queens and Fayrian cannot contribute like she once did. She hates seeing people struggle just to get enough food and despises the other Territories that just keep taking and taking and taking. She’s scared that with no end in sight even if they don’t start another war, that they will not survive much longer.
  • Love: Fay has loved and lost. A lot. Her parents, her Court, Her husband, her children. They didn’t even just die in the Purge. One by one those she cared about have been taken from her, and while she is not opposed to the idea of finding love again, she is terrified of it.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Queen’s Gift: it’s only a fraction of a fraction of what it was once, but she has clung to that tidbit and has just enough power left to slightly augment small areas of land. She will never be able to aid a farm, but she can assist a single small garden bed or some potted plants.
  • Telekinesis: She doesn’t have the power or range she once did, but she still has speed, and enjoys having things zoom about.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Psychic Communication: Fay can neither send nor receive psychic communication. She used to be able to with difficulty, but now it’s nothing.
  • Queen’s Touch: She used to be proficient at it, but since the Purge she has been unable to bring herself to even try connecting this way. It is simply too painful a reminder of the Court she lost.

    History:

Fay was one of two children born to Wisterian and Sadinar. As a young Queen, her training started early and from the start Fayrian was a force to be reckoned with. She was loud and opinionated and a walking talking headache for her older brother, Sunnar.

Upon reaching adulthood, Fay formed a Court and began her rule in a small village. As the decades passed and her skills and experience grew, she moved up to ruling a district. She married and had three children, and was happy.

Her father’s unexpected death in a sparring accident rocked her, but she had her own children to think of and sooth her through her grief, and when a few centuries later her mother found a new love and have another child, Fayrian welcomed her younger half-sister into the family with open arms. Her children grew and prospered and were the pride and joy of Fay and Eidolar, yet something dark loomed on the horizon.

The War began. As a Queen of Askavi, Fay encouraged all those in her Court who wished to join the fight to go. Her husband, brother, and both her sons took up the call, and Fay could not have been more proud. Yet the war didn’t go exactly as expected. It went on and on and on, with casualties mounting. Her worry for her boys grew with each passing year, and then one day a messenger came with grave news.

Eidolar and Fennar, her eldest son, had been in Hayll with their unit lead by the great War Hero Tavar Andros, when their leader deserted them, leaving Fay’s husband and son head on foreign soil. Fay mourned their death for years, her remaining two children and her younger sister her only comfort, and was just getting back on her feet to deal with the hardships Askavi was facing with this never-ending war when something no one had ever expected roared through the Realms.

The day the Witchstorm struck Asakvi Fay was in her garden with her daughter. They were collecting healing herbs for Carian to use in her tonics, when Fay felt something dark and wild rolling down off the mountains. Her daughter flung up a shield and Fay saw two of her Bonded rushing for her, but it was all for nothing.

Pain, agony like she had never imagined ripped through Fayrian, blinding her as she screamed. When she awoke from the pain, her Jewels were broken, and she was lying under the unmoving corpse of her daughter. She got to her knees, shaking her girl, pleading for Carian to wake up but to no avail. Stumbling, she made it out of the garden and fell on the bodies of her males, sobbing and cursing and unable to process what had just happened.

When she was found by Basear, her deceased husband’s brother and Fay’s Master of the Guard, she was huddled between two walls in the garden, arms wrapped around her knees and keening. It took a long time to count the dead. Their village had been decimated. Other than Basear, Fay’s entire Court had fallen. Her brother had survived, but he brought her the grim news that Fay’s only remaining child had died too, caught in the witchstorm that had also killed their little sister.

Everything went blurry after that. She had vague memories of Sunnar holding her and taking her somewhere warm and quiet. She wasn’t sure how long she stayed there, only that there was a gentle voice in the dark, a powerful, soothing presence that found all the pieces of her shattered self and pulled them back together until the grief no longer felt like it would kill her.

Her first solid memories after her breakdown were nearly two years later. Fay was told that Prince Vondar, her brother’s associate, had arranged for her to be seen by a talented Black Widow who had shored up a badly cracked chalice back together and kept her sedated until i t could heal and set. In the following years of continued slow recovery, Fay and her brother grew very close, as did she and Vondar, until she considered him a close friend.

Bit by bit, she made a new life for herself as she adjusted to not having Jewels or a family. Trying to form a new Court or find love again filled her with impossible, incomprehensible dread, so instead she focused all her time and attention of trying to help her Territory as it dealt with harsh retributions from the rest of the Realm.

She was inspecting a field to report on how desperate it’s need was to the the current Queen of her province when she started talking to the village elder of the Landen town. He was a sensible, haggered old man, but whose heart loved the land as much as Fay’s did. She recognized in him a kinship that she had never stopped to realize when she had her Court and Jewels.

Queens and Landen were bound to the earth, to the loam and grass and the things that grew from it in a way the other Castes didn’t always feel so strongly. Perhaps the secret to finding purpose in her new existence was to learn to relate to the land like they did.

For the following hundred years, Fay spent more and more time in that Lnaden village and others, unintentionally becoming their spokesperson among the Blood as she straddled the divide between them. Their struggle became Fay’s struggle, their triumphs her triumphs, but unfortunately those were few and far between. The threat of the Jinka, the severe sanctions imposed on Askavi by the rest of the Realm and the hardship of working a land without enough Queens weighed harsly on the Landens of Askavi. Someone needed to speak for them and make the Blood understand that they had to step up and that Landen deserved to have their voices heard too.

    That someone was Fay.

    Character in Play:

Fay crumbled a lump of dry, clay-red soil between her fingers with a deep scowl. Around her, a scraggly field of wheat was nearing harvest, the plants weak and sticking out of the ground in a despondent, half-hearted manner that felt like a direct accusation towards the Queen kneeling among them.

This had once been her land. Her district. Fay had walked through these fields during planting season, pouring ladle -ulls of water infused with her Purple Dusk strength and blood along each row. She had stood here again during the height of the growing season to trail her fingers through the gently swaying grasses and had helped bring in the harvest alongside her husband and children. Now, while Iridian ruled the Province well, there was only so much she could do with so few district and village level Queens available, which meant little farms like this one were simply not important enough to get any of the limited resource which was a QUeen’s Gift to the land.

Fay grit her teeth, then stood and turned to the Landen farmer. “Can you afford a fallow year after this harvest? There isn’t enough nutrients in the soil and if you keep taking from it your yields will only continue to suffer.”

The tall, bony man frowned. Fay knew her words weren’t the answer he had wanted. What he and every man and woman like him that called her to take a look at the land desired was for Fay to look at them and promise to get a Queen to their farm as soon as possible. That was, however, just not an option.

“I don’t know that the harvest will be large enough this year to sustain us through a year with a third of our production gone.” The man’s wife piped up, looking as concerned and disappointed as her husband. Fay sighed.

“You’ll have to ration. If you really can’t then only plant half the field, then swap. Use manure and compost on the side that is fallow and turn the earth often to rejuvenate the soil. Add charcoal from your fire that’s been ground up too, when you think of it.”

    “But isn’t there anything-”

“No.” Fay snapped, then, at the hurt look on their faces relented, “I’ll ask, but don’t get your hopes up, alright? I wish your story was unique but it’s not. Still, I’ll try.”

“Thank you, Lady Fa-” Fay held up her hand.

“Don’t thank me. I didn’t tell you anything you didn’t already know.” That was the painful truth. There simply were no good answers anymore. With a nod she turned to leave, but not before she overheard the husband murmur to the wife.

“What point is there even to plan more than one year ahead, Arlian? The Jinka will probably have wiped our village off the map by then.”
