Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Dalinar has always been a fairly easy going guy, particularly for a member of his Caste from the warrior culture of Askavi. Not for him the prickly temper nor thirst for violence so typical of his brothers. He has rather been as an implacable waterfall - fluid and adaptive, but nevertheless forceful and difficult to resist. His instincts and aggressiveness have always been geared towards protection rather than waging war, defensive as opposed to offensive despite his skills as an individual warrior.

He is introspective, content for the most part to observe rather than needing to be in the center of attention. In fact, he often seems to fade into the background, something that he both welcomes and simultaneously resists - though there are darker times when the kindest thing that can be said is that he is brooding. It isn’t surprising really, when the older twin, the darker twin lived in the shadow of his light-Jeweled brother who was the more aggressive warrior, the more charismatic personality, and the one who was chosen by their mutual Queen. He lived in his brother’s shadow while his brother lived and the shadow has only grown larger and deeper in the centuries since Eidolar died.

Since the Purge when his Queen Fayrian was Broken, he has had to cultivate patience as his defining personality trait in order to be as much a part of his Queen’s life as she would now allow. He does what he can, when he can to protect and support her. He waits as patiently as he knows how for the day when he will be more than a painful memory to the only person he has left who is important to him.

Dalinar spends much of his time training young men to be Wardens and for the most part is satisfied with the teacher's sense of accomplishment when a pupil does well. The job allows for more flexibility in his schedule than being a full-time Warden would so that he is able to be there for his Queen when she needs (and wants) him to be which is incidentally when he is at his happiest.

Dalinar has many acquaintances and friends, but no true attachments to anyone other than that of Bonded male to Fayrian. Dalliances are always casual and rarely last a significant amount of time. In general, he is content to be around others whether it is a large party or a smaller more exclusive gathering though nothing gets under his skin quite like someone given to orotund speeches as opposed to thoughtful action.

When he needs time alone, Dalinar will find a secluded spot - preferably outside - and carve wood. He's actually quite good at it and has made some lovely things to give as gifts over the years. His mother treasured the wooden cooking spoons he made her with the intricately detailed vines that wound around the handles - he still keeps them, though he does not use them. Some day, perhaps, Dal will give those particular spoons to someone else who will treasure them as much as Ashildian Avilor did.

Likes:
  • 1: Flying - More than simply a part of who he is as an Eyrien, flying is something Dalinar truly enjoys. The wind caused by flight never fails to cleanse any frustration he feels - or at least dim anger and pain to something that the Warlord Prince can push aside and ignore.
  • 2: Winsol - Dalinar looks forward to Winsol all year long. Even though memories of lost loved ones are harder to bear at this time of year, Fayrian's tradition of Winsol dinner is when she is most like the woman she was before her life fell apart - as her Bonded, Dalinar enjoys this brief glimpse of happier times and clings to them as proof that she might yet recover fully.
  • 3: Cooking - The kitchen is the one place his relationship with Fayrian doesn’t seem strained as they are able to work side by side, in the same space, each focused on their own task with no need to look each other in the face and so no awkwardness. In addition, it is something Dalinar can do to take care of Fayrian when she is unable to take care of herself.
Dislikes:
  • 1: His brother’s memory - Eidolar’s death strained his relationship with their mutual Queen. Because he and his brother wore identical faces from birth, it is understandable that Fayrian would grieve when she looks at him. As a result, although he too mourns his brother, he hates that his Queen can’t see past the memory of her husband to the very different man who would do anything to see her happy and who is very much his own person.
  • 2: Situations where his skills are unhelpful - Dalinar has not often been in the position where he could not  be useful. Fay’s time in the Twisted Kingdom, however, taught him just how hard it is to be able to do nothing to help another person.
  • 3: Chess - Dalinar has never been much of the kind of strategist one needs to be to play chess well and enjoy it. Playing the game highlights his weaknesses as a warrior, so he doesn't play.
Fears:
  • 1: Fayrian’s return to madness - Fay is all Dalinar has left. When her Chalice was Broken, he didn’t know if she would ever recover and the experience was so beyond his control and so terrifying that he does his best to keep from thinking about it.
  • 2: Another Purge - Dalinar was relatively lucky during the Purge in that he himself survived with Jewels intact. He doubted he would be so lucky again should another Purge occur and without his Jewels, he would be able to do even less for Fayrian, be less than she needs.
  • 3: Invisibility - Dal cultivates his ability to fade into the background as it allows him the greatest involvement in the lives of those important to him, but he fears not being seen, not being known, not being acknowledged. Perhaps this is why he is rubbish at sight shields.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Defensive Shielding - Because Dalinor has always focused on defense of others - of the Healers under his care as Warden, his Queen, her Court and her family - defensive shields that can be applied to others were his first priority to learn, and his first priority of Craft to perfect. His shields are strong and flexible and Dal has worked on them to the point where he barely has to think to set them.
  • 2  Reading Emotions -Dalinar has found that knowing which people are as calm and collected as they appear and which are hiding their true feelings to be the easiest way to navigate the mercurial emotional tides of the people he is surrounded by. This was true with his Healers and their patients and even more so with his Queen, her Court, and her family.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Combat Craft - This is not to say that Dalinor is a poor warrior. He has physical skill, physical strength. It is the application of Craft in his fighting that is lacking, the strategic mind and to some degree, resource management.
  • 2 Sight Shielding - Despite his skill in defensive shielding and contrary to his ability to seem to fade into the background, Dalinar cannot set an effective sight shield. When he tries, it inevitably converts to a solid defensive shield.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Ashildian Avilor  Yellow - Summer Sky Healer, b. 2661bp d. Purge
Father: Hakonar Avilor Tiger Eye - Purple Dusk Warlord, b. 2661 bp d. Purge
Siblings: Eidolar Avilor, Yellow to Summer Sky Warlord Prince, b. 1661bp d. 30bp

History:

Dalinar was the first of the twins born to Ashildian and Hakonar, preceding his brother by almost five hours. Although he always wanted a sister, his mother would laugh and say that two Warlord Princes were enough thank you very much. It wasn’t until he was older that he would realize that theirs had been a difficult birth for their mother, his and his brother Eidolar’s, and that afterwards she was unable to have any more children. The boys grew up as one might expect of two Warlord Princes: constantly butting heads, but united against outsiders. Oddly enough, it wasn’t even so much that they were brothers, or that they were Warlord Princes, that was at the root of their boyhood conflicts. It was that Dalinar was...mellow compared to his brother’s brimstone and Eidolar felt the need to poke and prod his brother until he got the competition the younger twin craved. This did not abate, and in fact was only exaggerated when the boys walked out of their Birthright ceremonies: Dalinar with a Summer Sky and his younger, more charismatic and more aggressive brother with a Yellow.

Like any other Eyrien male, the twins were sent to a Hunting Camp shortly after their Birthright Ceremony. It was there that Dalinar and Eidolar met another young Warlord Prince by the name of Sunar Bannok. The three would constantly get into trouble together and just as often get the others out of the trouble they’d not been party to. It was also during this time of training that Dal realized that he just didn’t do as well as many of the others and particularly his brother at being an offensive fighter. Since he excelled at defensive fighting, however, often holding his own against two or three or even five others at a time - as long as he was purely on the defensive the more opponents he faced - it was suggested that he train as a Warden. It was a suggestion that came as a relief as it allowed him to focus on his strengths as a warrior rather than feeling as if he were merely mediocre, something difficult for any Eyrien male to live with.

The twins were forty the year they met up with Sunar during his visit home. It was a chance encounter that would change their lives. Sunar’s sister Fayrian was also home at the time and also a Queen and the Bonded Queen for both twins. Eidolar immediately fell in love and began a pursuit as aggressive as everything else he did that would eventually culminate in marriage many years later. Dalinar loved his Queen not a bit less than his brother, but was content to simply be in her presence. After a few years he was asked to see her through her Virgin Night, an honor and duty he took as seriously as he did his duties as Warden. Whether rightly or wrongly he believed that he was asked to do so because of the Bond, but also because Fay believed he had no romantic attachment to her to complicate matters between them. And so he did as expected and saw his Queen through this very important milestone and continued on as her confidant rather than her lover. Sunar must have realized the difficulty Dalinar would face because when it was time for his next Rut, Sunar got him to a Priestess who drained his Jewels and then dragged him out into a remote forest where he left Dalinar to work out his aggression and tension by punching trees and hunting game. Fay's garden never lacked for mulch. This became their pattern, Dalinar never once coming between his brother and their Queen before Eidolar’s death nor forcing himself on his Queen after his brother’s death and being even more careful to keep his distance after the Purge.

Dalinar continued as a Warden for the next several centuries, discovering that he had a talent for identifying the various brews and tonics that his Healers would use to supplement their Craft. He learned from them which medicines to use for which illnesses and injuries so well, in fact, that they would sometimes rely on him to administer such medicines while they concentrated on the more difficult aspects of Healing. It was a task the Warlord Prince did not mind as it allowed him to be close enough to his Healers to be as attentive to their needs and wellbeing as his instincts required without also earning their ire for being too overprotective. He didn’t know it then, but it was a skill that would serve him well in caring for and protecting his Queen later.

Eventually Fayrian asked Dalinar to serve as her Master of the Guard. It was a posting he was only too happy to take as he turned his talent for defence to focus on guarding his Queen, her family and Court. Over the next several centuries life was relatively simple. Dalinar Served. He guarded. He was, as always, a confidant and shoulder to cry on. He continued to be on good terms with the others whose lives intertwined with that of his Queen as he always had been. When news came of the death of his brother and his oldest nephew during the War, he was there to comfort Fay over the loss of her husband and son until she became unable to look him in the eyes. He was the mirror of his brother after all and he understood how much it hurt her to look at him. So he continued to Serve, but faded into the background as much as he could, giving Fayrian the space she wanted. It was, after all, what she needed.

In the decades following his brother’s death, Dalinar spent a lot of time with his parents. He was sparring with his father when something dark, wild and furious came rolling out of the mountains like a psychic avalanche. He started to throw up shields as his mother came running out of their home but his father came in behind him and knocked him unconscious. When the darkness lifted and Dalinar regained his senses, nothing was the same. His father’s body was atop that of his mother, the shards of Hakonar’s Jewels littered around the couple, their eyes wide and staring, blank in death. Shock filled him, paralysed him until he felt Fayrian through the Bond - she was barely there and in so much pain. Dalinar rushed back to Court searching through seemingly countless bodies. When he found her huddled between two walls in her garden keening out her grief and pain, he felt his heart break anew when she no longer recognized him. He called Sunar, relieved to find his friend alive and able to help care for Fay. In a way, the next couple of years were easier for the Warlord Prince than it had been in some time. Fayrian’s catatonic state meant that for the first time in centuries Dalinar was able to be as close to his Queen as he wanted and needed to be to care for her. At the same time, those years were the hardest he’d ever endured in his long life as there was absolutely nothing he could do to bring Fay back from the Twisted Kingdom.

When Fayrian was back in possession of her own mind, Dalinar was so relieved that he had to leave. After years of being able to care for her as she needed, the Warlord Prince couldn’t bear be relegated to the background while his Queen turned to her brother and new friend for comfort unable to even look her only remaining Bonded in the eyes. He’s spent the years since mostly training new Wardens though he can’t stay entirely away from his Queen and is there by her side to care for her and cook with her whenever he can. In recent years he has been able to be there for Fay more and more though he continues to fade into the background whenever possible.

Character in Play:
The room was bright and pretty, sunlight and fresh air flowing through the open windows. The garden outside was in full bloom and the scent of flowers filled the small space. It was exactly the kind of room his Queen had had when they first met and it was exactly the kind of room the Healers the Warlord Prince had once tended would have recommended for a long convalescence.

    He’d shielded it to a fare-thee-well.

Dalinar Avilor fucking hated this room.

It wasn’t the room really. It was that Fayrian, his Queen, the only person he had left that he cared about, stayed here. It wasn’t even really that she was here. No, what Dalinar hated was that Fay was Broken. It went beyond the loss of her Jewels though. The worst was that her soul was broken. There was no recognition at all now when she looked at him - and that wounded far deeper than had all those times she hadn’t been able to look at him at all since Eidolar - her husband, his brother - had died.

He wanted to pulverize something with his bare hands, and that wasn’t like him. He wanted to howl his rage, his grief, his pain for the world to know - but he didn’t. He didn’t need a Healer or a Black Widow to tell him that was the worst possible thing he could do to Fayrian. Dalinar crushed those emotions behind shields so thick and strong in his mind that not even another Witchstorm could dig them out where his Queen would feel them. His body shook with the tension of it, but his hands were steady as he ran a brush gently through Fay’s hair, remembering a time when they’d first met, a time when he was at his happiest sitting quietly with her brushing her hair while she talked about anything, about everything.

“Do you remember Fay? You thought we were the same person for the longest time. We were confused by what seemed to us to be random leaps in conversation until we figured it out. Sunar couldn’t stop laughing his head off, the prick.” His tenor voice was soft, calm and gentle as he spoke, not one hint of his inner turmoil where his Queen could hear it or feel it in any way.

Dalinar shared these memories with Fayrian daily, several times a day, in the hopes that maybe they would lead her back. She never spoke to him, nor saw him, but he tried again and again and again.

***

“Here Fay, have some apple sauce. There’s cinnamon and nutmeg in the apples from your garden in it. I remember picking apples for your mother to make this for your birthday. She showed me how to make it just the way you like it.” He had to wrap her fingers around the handle of the spoon and dip it in the bowl, but once he had, his Queen was able to feed herself. Tears burned in the back of his throat, but Dalinar would choke on them before he let them fall.

***

“Put on this sweater Fay. There’s a bit of a chill in the wind today.” The Warlord Prince was gentle as he wrapped the sweater around his Queen, burying his face in her hair as he held her. She just sat and stared out the window.

***

He pulled a blanket up and tucked it around the sleeping Queen, lightly stroking her cheek as he moved a lock of hair out of her face. “Come back to us Fayrian. I’ll never make you look at my face again if you’ll just come back.”

***

Dalinar punched a tree. Fay’s sobs drifted into the night and there was nothing he could do for her. She’d had a nightmare but when he’d tried to hold her to soothe her, Fayrian had pushed him away, hysterical. Dalinar had been forced to contain her in shields while he called for reinforcements. Sunar was with her now and as soon as the other Warlord Prince arrived, Fay had run to him clinging to her brother as her sobs redoubled.

Dalinar punched the tree again, fingers breaking, “FUUUUUCK!!!” he roared, but only within his mind. Even out here, away from his Queen’s immediate presence, he would do nothing to jeopardize his Fay.
