Personality

Personality:
Celebrian Eodan has very few rules that she feels bound to follow and they all center around her deep, near obsessive love of Askavi. If anyone were to ask her the greatest love of her life, she would reply Askavi without hesitation. This is easier than thinking about her still born son and the love she bore him, or the abiding love that she has set aside entirely for Drakkar Estaroth. Whatever love she bears her daughter, Novarian, is a private and contentious matter between just the two of them.

A woman who loves her homeland more than her children is one who will go to great lengths to protect and defend it. Great lengths may be down playing the reality. Within her own private rule set, there is no length that is too great for such a matter. Celebrian believes the heart of Askavi is not her Queens, it is her warriors. She is drawn to those who serve and fight and has honed her body, mind, and connection to the Darkness to be able to see these males cared for.

Fervent in her in beliefs, she offers her body for the good of Askavi again and again as a service to these very warriors. It is both a sacrifice she offers with deep honor to the Darkness and a point of pride for her that she has developed her Craft in these ways. She craves the respect that she receives from the warriors in the hunting camps, and is rewarded. A prideful woman, there is nothing humble about the way she receives their appreciation. She is a Priestess of the Darkness, daughter of the Mother, in communion with the darkest parts of their souls. If they worship her, she is worthy of it.

Having craved power and recognition from her childhood, there has never been a time that Celebrian did not strive to rise and expect those around her to do the same. Many a lover was tossed aside in her younger years due to their lack of desire for excellence that she required not only of herself but those she deigned to spend her time with. She has never had a shortage of interested suitors nor offers of a life that could be lived in relative ease. She shunned these for living a life filled with praise and need, where every breath she drew she could truly say was in service of the Mother. She does not know moderation and exists in extremes, unable to find anything but anger and frustration in the in between.

When things do not go the way she feels they should, her frustration is high and her temper sharp. Her multiple attempts to return her daughter to her true homeland has led to naught, and each new pass infuriates her more. She is an intimidating figure when angry, and one only the very Dark Jeweled or very arrogant are willing to be near or cross when she is in such a mood. The one area this does not come through is in her teaching. This act, too, feels like a service to the Darkness, and she has seemingly endless patience in proving the depth of her devotion.

Privately, she is a very lonely woman, bereft of her children, lacking a husband, at odds with those who were at one time her closest friends. So many of the people she has cared for are dead, and some of those remaining might as well be for all that she recognizes them in their current form. She keeps her own counsel unless asked, writes letter to her daughter that she will never send, and sing lullabies to her dead son that he will never hear.

Likes:
  • 1 Power. Celebrian has always craved power. She does not trust others to make decisions for her. She wants to be in charge of her own life, and preferably, the lives of others as well. She has never easily followed another's rules and prefers by far to work in her own way, without someone who requires her to report back to them or has the right to tell her what to do.
  • 2 Strong male warriors. They are the heart of Askavi. Their blood is sacred. Without them, Askavi is barely distinguishable from other Territories. Yes, everywhere has Queens, but the ferocity of Eyrien Warriors is a unique aspect of their culture and identity. She is drawn to them as a way to serve Askavi and for all they represent. Those who have fought, those who will fight, they are blessed by the Darkness.
  • 3 Her Jewels. So few made it through the Purge intact. The Communal Eyries are filled with Broken warriors. Celebrian treasures her Jewels. They allow her to continue to stand at the depth in the Abyss that she has grown to need and love and to continue her work in service to both the Darkness and Askavi. She could have never helped Endevar Ranosi the way she did were she broken, and it is something she thinks about often with gratitude.
Dislikes:
  • 1 The estrangement with her daughter. If Celebrian were willing to ever admit an action for which she feels regret, it would be leaving her baby daughter Novarian in Shalador. Though she has tried to repair the relationship, Novarian does not seem to appreciate the extreme lengths that her mother has gone to in order to bring her to her rightful homeland of Askavi where she belongs. The Darkness blessed Celebrian with an Ebon Gray Queen daughter to serve Askavi, not Shalador. Celebrian continues to work toward a reunion, refusing to acknowledge that Novarian does not feel the profound love of Askavi that she does.
  • 2 Being around pregnant women. Celebrian will not openly acknowledge to anyone other than Drakkar that the loss of their son, Valar, haunts her everyday. When she sees women who are pregnant, she doesn't think of Novarian, although that is a painful enough rift. She thinks of her first pregnancy, and how happy she and Drakkar were together before Valar was born and lost to her in the same moment. She has difficulty being in the presence of pregnant women and quickly excuses herself as soon as possible.
  • 3 Being required to stay in one place. Over the centuries, Celebrian has become accustomed to moving at her will, going from War Camp to War Camp as she has desired, even moving to Shalador when she needed to flee the grief of losing both her son and Drakkar. This allows her to be in control of her own life, but more than that, she has left when things have been too difficult to face. With her current appointment to the Territory Court, all of the different pieces of her world are colliding and she does not like it in the least. There are some days she simply wants to flee.
Fears:
  • 1 Never bearing another child. Celebrian fears that Novarian and Valar are the only children she will ever have. Eyriens are not known for being terribly fertile as it is, and her mother had particular difficulty carrying to term, with Celebrian being her only viable child. Having birthed two children, one who survived and one who didn’t, Celebrian is scared to even try to get pregnant again. This fear is enhanced due to her history with Drakkar. He is the one male she would willingly seek out to sire a child, and she can't imagine he would ever consent to go through that with her again after the loss of their son.
  • 2 Askavi’s Fall. Everything she does, she does for Askavi. Her distance and demanding manner serve the needs of Askavi. The brutality that she not only allows but seeks out in helping the warriors with their ruts are in service of Askavi. If Askavi were to fall, not only would she lose everything she loves and has fought for, she would be utterly bereft of purpose. Celebrian would rather have her wings cut off than see a life without Askavi.
  • 3 Living, and dying, alone. Celebrian never thought she wanted partnership in her life. Serving Mother Night has been nearly all consuming for her. She has always wanted her freedom, her ability to travel at will and serve those who need her. A husband would mean she couldn’t do the current work she does. She would miss it terribly, but the idea of living out her life without a partner, and dying alone, completely petrifies her. She only came close to marriage once, during the year she was with Drakkar before they lost Valar, their baby boy. Had he claimed her, had he asked her to marry him, she would have said yes. But that was not meant to be, and she can’t see another path to the kind of joy and hope for the future that she had for their relationship.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Connecting to the Darkness: Celebrian believes her ability to connect to the Darkness is what allows her to commune with the Mother in the way that she does, even in moments of great emotional or physical challenge. She has always felt close to the Darkness, and with that closeness comes an arrogance that she understands the Mother's will better than others. Like other narrowly gifted Priestesses of Askavi, she can use this connection to commune with males in rut.
  • 2 Reinforced Chalice: Having spent most of her life in War Camps seeing to the needs of rutting males, Celebrian has honed her Craft to allow her to serve the Darkness in this very particular way. These interactions have grown to be a kind of communion for her, each one adding to her experience and true understanding of the nature of a rut. Over time, her Chalice has grown stronger through this communion, allowing her to endure experiences that might break other witches. The most intense test of this was when she was able to help Endevar Ranosi through a rut. While her body took a week to heal, her Chalice remained intact.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1  Compulsion Craft: It would be so much easier if she could simply force Novarian to do what she knows is best for her daughter and for Askavi. Despite trying her damnedest to learn how to compel other people to her will, she must use her cunning and not her Craft to do so. Every hundred years or so she tries again to learn this art, and every time she is defeated and enraged for several months at her failure.
  • 2 Ceremonial and Ritual Craft: Like all Priestesses, Celebrian was trained to do rituals. She knows how to stand as a Priestess for a Birthright Ceremony or an Offering to the Darkness, but you really wouldn't want her to.  She can't add anything to the experience, and in fact, her focus on her own needs and goals often interferes with an individual's efforts to concentrate and connect to the abyss in a ceremonial setting. She can't inspire people through large rituals, only quietly, one at a time.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Jurian Eodan White - Tiger Eye witch, deceased (b. 4588 BP)
Father: Lazar Eodan Tiger Eye - Summer Sky Prince, deceased (b. 3927 BP)
Half-sister: Ossian Eodan Rose - Summer Sky Healer, deceased (b. 2554)
Son: Valar Estaroth (Still birth, b. 165 AP)
Daughter: Novarian Marzena Sapphire to Ebon Gray Queen age 24 (b. 168 AP)

History:
Celebrian was born the only daughter to Jurian and Lazar Eodan. She was a surprise pregnancy, but a happy one. Jurian had struggled to conceive and when she had, she had not been able to carry the child to term. The couple had contented themselves with Lazar's daughter, Ossian, a Healer born of a separate union before he and Jurian met.

Born to a witch who had given up on ever having  child, Celebrian was spoiled beyond measure. Everything she wanted she was gifted, every plea or request immediately responded to. She was held constantly and never cried for being alone as she simply wasn't. She was raised an only child as her half-sister was so many years older than her. She had a happy childhood filled with the usual milestones. Coming away from her Birthright with a Purple Dusk was a joyous occasion and very surprising for the family. Celebrian was proud of her accomplishment, returning with the possibility for a Dark Descent.

Her parents took her to the best tutors they could afford and she grew in both Craft Strength and beauty as her teenage years passed by. Long before her Offering, it was clear that she was the dominant personality in nearly any setting, demanding and insistent on getting her way. Most found it simply easier to yield to her than to fight. When she did find people who would argue with her, she honed her sharp tongue on their young minds. She was quick and devastating with her insults. More than once her parents were asked to speak to her about her behavior, but both saw it as a clear indication of the powerful woman she would become.

It was from her parents that she learned her deep love of Askavi. Above all, the land must be cared for, their heritage and ways preserved, and Askavi must always stand in glory throughout the Realm. In some ways, Celebrian believes it was a blessing her father died during the purge and her mother shortly after. For them to see what Askavi had become over the last two centuries would have broken their hearts.

Both her father and her sister gave their lives to shield Celebrian and her mother. Her mother's health had been slowly failing. Ossian sent for her, and Celebrian and Ossian had both been staying with their parents. When the Purge hit, Celebrian was sitting at her mother's bed side and both her father and Ossian threw up shields over them. Their father died first. Ossian was broken, but survived a few hours before she, too, was lost. Her mother died the next day. Celebrian is sure that she would have survived much longer if it weren't for losing both her husband and step-daughter so suddenly.

Celebrian was suddenly very much alone. She had little time to sit with that, though, for Lokar Estaroth contacted her. Drakkar Estaroth, someone she called friend, had been broken of his Red Jewel in the Purge and nearly drowned. He was very weak. The Healer had done all she could and needed to leave to care for others. Lokar asked her to please come and she did. She set out immediately, there being nothing left for her but death within her parents' home.

Drakkar and Celebrian had a complicated history of loss already. It seemed only right they would come together in this as well. When she was a young Priestess, only a few hundred years old, she had taken up teaching and found that she loved it deeply. Seeing the next generation of Priestesses come into their own connection with Mother Night was an amazing thing to witness, and through her work, she spread her own opinions and love for Askavi.

Xanian Estaroth, a White to Yellow Priestess, had been one of her students. She was the daughter of Carian and Drakkar Estaroth. Celebrian got along well with the family as a whole. She grew to know them well over the years. They, too, felt  passion for what Askavi was and what their land required to be protected. Xanian was a bright and promising student and one of her favorite students.

And then Hayll attacked. Both Xanian and Carian were killed. Drakkar was filled with fury at the loss of his beloved wife and his beautiful daughter, and took that fury out on every enemy he met. Celebrian followed him to the War Camps and saw for the first time the true Heart of Askavi: Her Warriors. The drum beat of war called out to every Eyrien, and Celebrian found she could serve her land best by caring for the needs of her warriors.

Drakkar gained renown for his skills in battle, but no amount of blood could bring his family back to him. She traveled between War Camps, but continually returned to the Blood Seekers. She used her Craft to help his men, and when the time came, she used it to help him as well. She stood next to the warriors who fought, unafraid of their basest natures. She gained a reputation for being dependable and steadfast, unflinching in the aftermath of battle. Her arrogance served her well here. She would not turn away from what it meant to Eyrien.

Already having a complicated history, Drakkar and Celebrian grew closer in the wake the Purge and of Drakkar's devastation and sense of failure. She did not leave his side until she was sure of both his physical and mental ability to survive, and even then it was with a promise to see each other again soon. Celebrian returned to her work. There was more need than ever for Priestesses. While she still did the work she felt called to in the War Camps, she also sought to help the lost and dying. She sat with those who mourned their loved ones and their Jewels. She helped in the communal eyries. In the few spare hours she ever allowed herself, she turned to Mother Night to see what she could offer as solace to all of Askavi’s pain.

In this way, she worked through her own pain. Celebrian never properly mourned her parents or her sister. Always driven, the need to succeed at something great solidified like a hard stone in her heart in their absence. What was left was her deep love of Askavi and her need to know she was having an impact. She could not sit idly by. She had to act.

As the years passed, she spent more and more time with the War Camps, leaving the communal eyries to other Priestesses. She would offer prayers to the Darkness before battle, but her main ability remained easing the men of ruts and turning the very nature of it to a communion with the Darkness. The warriors might otherwise destroy someone with their need without meaning to. The more males she helped, the stronger her Craft grew.

Still unwed and yet unwilling to wait yet longer, Celebrian decided she wanted to have a child. In 163 AP, she approached Drakkar Estaroth and told him she wanted to bare a strong child for Askavi's future. Initially he was confused and thought that she wanted his suggestions for warriors to choose between. Fairly quickly she made it clear she was asking him to be the father. After everything they had been through together, the pair decided that this was the next step for them.

The time she spent with Drakkar conceiving and carrying their child was some of the happiest of her life. The Blood Seekers knew her already from her long years spent with them during times of both war and peace and they respected her place at Drakkar's side, although few if any would dare to comment on it. Celebrian and Drakkar found they were extremely well suited in ways they hadn't expected. Even though the pregnancy was at times difficult, she was extremely excited about becoming a mother.

While Drakkar's Red had shattered during the Purge, a close friend of both, Vondar, was dark enough to drain Celebrian's Jewel to keep her Craft from trying to take over the body of her and Drakkar's unborn child. Labor was long and difficult. The Healer kept telling her it would all be worth it at the end when she could hold her child. The baby was born a boy. And still born. Drakkar named him Valar Estaroth, after his former commander, Valar Andros, the best man and warrior he ever knew.

In their grief, Celebrian and Drakkar slowly drifted apart. Instead of consoling each other and trying again, they each blamed themselves for the loss of their child. They could barely look at the other for the shame they each carried, let alone seek each other out for solace. The distance grew between them until one day, Celebrian could no longer endure the pain. She packed her things and left Askavi, the land she loved above all else. She didn't say goodbye.

For the first time, Celebrian had a crisis of faith. What if the Eyrien warriors were not the Heart of Askavi after all? What if she had dedicated her entire life to acts of service that would not save or protect her homeland? Is that why the Darkness had taken her beloved Valar? To show her that she was on the wrong path? Did Askavi need a Queen, darker and glorious, more powerful than the Red Queen had been?

Having heard tale of the prowess of the warriors of Shalador, many of them Eyriens themselves, she set her sights on finding one who could sire her a Dark Jeweled Queen. She consulted a Shaladorian Black Widow and paid her handsomely to learn the identity of the male who could bring her such a child. She would not leave the matter to fate once again. The Black Widow gave her a name: Theoden Marzena.

In her mind's eye, she created him to be a warrior made of legend with bloodlines of long lived ancestry. In reality, he was a Rose to Purple Dusk Warlord and short lived. Still, he was a fierce hunter and in the prime of his short life. She chose him and he did not refuse her, despite her emotional distance. He cared for her during her difficult pregnancy, but there was no spark between them, not like there had been with Drakkar.

The second labor was even more painful than the first. Memories of Valar's still body came back to her throughout the ordeal. When finally she was delivered, she was shocked and disgusted to find the baby girl did not have wings. She looked nothing like her mother, her skin color that of Theoden. Celebrian was devastated and near mad with grief. As soon as she could travel, she left her baby daughter and Theoden both and returned to Askavi. She did not even grant her daughter and Eyrien name.

She returned to Askavi and took solace in her deep grief in serving the Mother once more. She lived in the War Camps, traveling from place to place, careful to never come in contact with either Drakkar or the Blood Seekers. She grieved her foolishness to have ever doubted her connection with the Darkness and Mother Night. Her purpose may not be to birth what Askavi needed, but it was to serve. She had lost sight of that and would not again.

For eight years, she stood by this promise. But Celebrian then heard rumors of a half breed Eyrien Queen born to Shalador who had come away from her Birthright with the Sapphire. She knew in her bones this was her daughter. The Mother had given her a second chance, and she would see her will done. She left immediately to reclaim her child and bring her home to Askavi where she belonged. It took very little to confirm that yes, this child, named Nova Marzena, was her daughter. She went first to the District Court and then the Province Court, seeking to have her rightful place as the girl's mother restored.

The Province Queen called for the family to come forward and speak on her behalf. The moment Celebrian saw her, she knew she was the answer to all of Askavi's ailments. Celebrian called her Novarian, despite the child's insistence her name was Nova. Nova was not a proper Eyrien name. When she was with her own kind, she would understand. To Celebrian's shock and horror, Novarian denied her.  The girl did not want to come home to Askavi and the Province Queen declared in favor of Theoden and the hag he had married to help raise her daughter.

Celebrian spent a month arguing for her rights and the rights of Askavi to her daughter, the Queen who wore the Sapphire. She would watch her Shaladorian "family" die and Novarian would be left alone. The people of Shalador could never understand of appreciate the glory of such a Queen. She needed to be where she could be taught the ways of her people. Nothing worked. Celebrian left without her daughter, but not without intention to continue to try to return her to her homeland.

Celebrian waited. She would not make the same mistake again and trust an inferior Court system to restore her child to her. She returned to Shalador when her daughter was 15, quietly this time, and used a sedative to drug her. When Novarian lost consciousness a little while later, she was there with an Opal Jeweled Escort to whisk her away.

The young Queen woke up just as they were about to cross the border into Askavi. She panicked, and despite Celebrian trying to calm her, Novarian's Eyrien instincts flared to life. She killed the Opal Jeweled Escort, splattering his brains all over the window of the carriage, but could not harm her mother, wrapped in double Sapphire shields. Celebrian could not get through to her daughter. It seemed she had inherited her mother's fierce loyalty to her homeland. The only issue was it was the wrong homeland.

The Queen's males, the same Queen she had faced before, soon overtook the carriage and tore Novarian from her mother once again. The Queen even had the audacity to threaten Celebrian's life, saying she was only allowed to live because they had not actually left Shalador yet. Celebrian was banished from Nayarit Province, never to return on pain of death. She was forced to leave without being able to say goodbye to her daughter.

And then, less than a year after her failed attempt to take Novarian by force, something remarkable happened. A wingless Black Jeweled Eyrien Warlord Prince came to Askavi. Celebrian saw in him a future for Askavi to be restored to her former glory. She offered herself as one of his teachers to learn about his history and his people. When he went into rut, she convinced him she could survive his hunger, and she did. When he disappeared less than two years later, she feared the worst. What else beyond death could keep the Black Jeweled Warlord Prince of Askavi from his home?

In the Spring of 188, the year her daughter gained her majority, Celebrian went to visit Valar's grave on the day of his birth, and of his death. When she saw Drakkar there, she almost left. They had not seen nor spoken to each other since she left him and went to Shalador. For a short time, they put their history aside and simply mourned their child and the life he never got to lead. After that day, slowly, painfully, they worked out how to be in each other's lives.

Celebrian returned to the Blood Seekers for the first time and was greeted with mixed reactions. Things were different than before. Drakkar was more blood thirsty than she had ever seen him. And it was that very rage that led to the attack in which the Queen's husband and Consort was killed, and Drakkar claimed the title of Warlord Prince of Askavi.

It has been nearly a year now since Drakkar appointed her as High Priestess of Askavi. Though changed, they still remember the other, and there is a deep trust there that has spanned multiple tragedies. He said it was so he had someone who could advise him who both warranted his respect and understood the life of the Blood Seekers. Celebrian assumed it also had something to do with wanting her to remain in one place, allowing him to know where she was and whether she was in danger.

Now, Endevar Ranosi has returned, and Celebrian sees her worlds and relationships all coming together. If only she could convince her daughter to return home, she knows that Askavi could once again be made whole.

Character in Play:
Every year since her daughter, Novarian Marzena, had been banished from her false homeland of Shalador, Celebrian had sent her an invitation to join her at Winsol for the festivities in Askavi. And every year, she received the same reply:

Esteemed Lady Celebrian Eodan,
No.
Fuck you,
Lady Nova Marzena

Her daughter was stubborn. Not only did Celebrian know this, it spoke well for her Eyrien temperament. Novarian was still so young, a child really, albeit one who carried with her remarkable strength. Novarian wore Celebrian's Descent as her Birthright Jewel, and like her mother, had achieved a full descent. She wore the Ebon Gray now, and Celebrian looked forward to when she could see her child once again and feel the darkness of her power brush against her as opposed to only hear about it by rumor.

Askavi needed the strength that Novarian carried. The Darkness had blessed her with a Queen who stood so deep in the Abyss that she could save Askavi. The land would be nourished, the nonsense of the remnants of the Court of Sister Queens would be laid to rest once and for all. Novarian would come home, she would be trained properly, and she would rule.

It was what was best for her. And it was what was best for Askavi.

Pulling out the parchment that she wrote all of Novarian's letters on, she started to write. Unlike most, this one would actually be sent.

My dearest Novarian-
I hope this letter finds you in good health. As I do every Winsol, I am extending an invitation for you to join me, your mother, in Askavi in our Winsol Celebrations. I know you have not been able to return to the land I birthed you in, but your true homeland will welcome you with open arms. Please come. It would be so lovely to see you after such a long absence.
With my deepest affection,
Celebrian

Celebrian lit the wax with a touch of witchfire and watched as it warmed and dripped a sapphire blue onto the folded missive. When there was enough, she stamped it with her seal as High Priestess of Askavi. That was a change she was not sure that Novarian was aware of. Now she would be. Perhaps knowing she would be spending Winsol with the Territory Court would be enough to draw her wayward daughter home.
