Personality

Personality:
Cassian considers herself reserved where others might view her as timid or shy. She prefers to stay out of the spotlight and do her job, to not attract attention, and to not make any rash decisions before getting all of the information needed. She’s a Healer -- if she misdiagnoses a patient because she rushed to a conclusion, how disastrous could that be? This sort of educated, decisive thinking pervades her life as well, though she doesn’t see it that way. She simply does not want to make bad decisions.

An introvert at heart, Cassian maintains a few close friendships that allow her to get out and experience the world, but on a whole, she finds the world very confusing and very dark. She often wrestles with being angry for those hurt or injusticed, as well as struggles to understand the various shades of gray in a world she wishes was just black and white. She knows she comes across as naive to some because of her bookish ways, but Cassian is very contemplative and intelligent, just quietly so. She prefers to be a source of hope, though not a publicly shining one. Occasionally, she has a playful streak to her, since she wants to capture that idyllic time in her life before her mother died. To her, memories are more important than things.

Her faults generally include falling for the wrong type of guy or overindulging in alcohol. Neither are things she does often. Other people say that she believes in the good in others and shouldn’t do that as much. Cassian says she’s just trying to give them a chance. She isn’t one to take many risks and driving up her adrenaline for fun does not appeal to her. She craves knowledge, which she feels gives her power in this chaotic world, and only wants to keep her family (what remains of it) safe. She has a streak of defeatism from time to time, when things get really bad, but most of the time, Cassian bounces back from whatever puts her in the dirt.

Likes:
  • 1 - Museums. Being such a bookworm, Cassian loves history and historical places. Art, science, natural history -- doesn’t matter, if it’s something dedicated to the past, she enjoys being in its presence.
  • 2 - Snow. Cassian’s favorite season is winter and she loves flying over the wintry landscape after snowfall. Some of her most cherished memories are snowball fights with her brothers.
  • 3 - Her brothers. Cassian adores her brothers and always looks forward to spending any sort of time with them. She makes certain to tell everyone that they are coming over and what plans they have and where they are going to eat and what they are going to do and...
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Fear. Fear leads to misunderstandings, assumptions, and, eventually, hatred. It seems like everyone hates everything nowadays or is afraid of everything and Cassian wrestles with having a healthy fear of the world and having an overgrown phobia about it.
  • 2 - Politics. Politics tends to knot everything up, make everything complicated. Cassian can’t understand why people just can’t live and let live sort of deal.
  • 3 - Cats. She’s just not a fan of them. She finds them weird because of their independent (and often antisocial) streak. Also, hairballs. Gross.
Fears:
  • 1 - Losing the rest of her family. Cassian’s mother died when she was relatively young and that pain still haunts Cassian. With all of the conflict in Askavi, Cassian fears another attack that will bring on another death in her family.
  • 2 - Shattering her Jewels. She doesn’t have much power to begin with and she’s surrounded by people who have way more. She fears overextending herself and breaking her Jewels in an effort to keep up.
  • 3 - Being unable to fly. A childhood tumble nearly grounded Cassian for life. It was weeks before she could fly again and because of that event, she never flies in the rain anymore.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Animal healing. Naturally, since Cassian was drawn to helping injured critters in her backyard as a child, she was also drawn to this. Her healing spells with animals are layered like bandages, quickly strengthening bone or muscle to allow basic movement while the rest of the spell soaks in for a long healing.
  • 2 - Extended duration spells. Healing can take a while and Cassian doesn’t believe in rushing it if she can. The body needs time to rest so Cassian is good at setting up bone-knitting or wound-healing spells to take a few days more, forcing her patients to rest in order to heal other, more emotional wounds.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Death spells. Being a Healer, taking an oath to preserve life, Cassian prefers never to have to end a life. Unless it’s a mercy killing, she won’t let herself use a death spell and her lack of practice with these spells (because she’s so uncomfortable with it) makes her inept.
  • 2 - Combat Shielding. Not much of an offensive warrior, being an Eyrien female, Cassian will remember to Shield but struggles with alternating its power or layering. She thinks it may because she doesn’t want to be in conflict.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Alurian Ankhara, Blood female, deceased witch (died 362 BP at age 1105)
Father: Tallevar Ankhara, Purple Dusk to Sapphire Warlord (age 1609, born 1415 BP)
Siblings: Cassadar, White to Tiger Eye Warlord Prince (age 885, born 691 BP); Cannevar, broken White to Rose Warlord (age 694, born 500 BP)
Children: Aluvar, White to Tiger Eye Prince (age 555, born 361 BP)
Nephews: Tallodar and Danovar (Cassadar’s sons, aged 437 and 364), Pellovar (Cannevar’s son, aged 215)

History:

Sandwiched between two brothers by birth order, Cassian grew up in a rough and tumble sort of world, being both protected by her elder brother and protecting her younger one often enough. They were a rowdy trio of children, always getting into the dirt, but they were not considered misbehaved.

Cassian’s Healer training actually began in the garden, where she helped her mother with the growing things. She had an affinity for life from early on. Any injured critters found in their area was carefully nursed back to health and sent back out. Little Cassian hated seeing anything die, even though she understood the cycle of life.

Cassian was overjoyed to receive the same Birthright as her older brother, and doubly elated when their younger brother also bore a White. To her, it seemed like the Darkness had smiled upon their little sibling trio, gracing them with the same Jewels to show their bond. She began apprenticing with a Healer in between her classes shortly afterwards. Even though her brothers were to be trained as warriors, they still managed to pass on some of these skills, in private, with their sister, not because she wanted to learn self defense, but because she just wanted to do things with her brothers still and not lose that bond they had.

Little Cassian loved learning. She was an eager student, though maybe not the most apt, but her exuberance made up for that. She had an inquisitive mind that wanted to know more about everything, especially how the human body worked. It was all fascinating to her, to learn about the systems and rhythms of the body. Cassian probably bored her brothers to death, telling them everything she had learned, but they never pushed her away.

While her Virgin Night was unremarkable, what Cassian considered her first true sexual experience was a disaster. She thought he was in love with her and it turned out he was only looking for a romp. Her older brother turned protective, her younger brother turned soothing, as she told them what had happened.

After that, it was years before Cassian worked up the courage to allow men to approach her again, even after her Tiger Eye Offering. Her older brother Cassadar had gained a reputation for beating the snot out of anyway who looked at his sister funny so this also took years to move away from. Cassian never found lasting love though, for whatever reason. It was probably for the best. She had a history of picking the wrong type of guy anyway.

By the time Cassian was a fully fledged Healer, the Great War was really starting to show its effects on her Territory. She heard horrendous stories about what was going on from the warriors returning to be healed. Atrocities unmentionable. Cassian could not believe that her believe -- her proud, indomitable people -- were involved with this! At home, she was outspoken against the War, even though her brothers and father were both involved in it, which caused a lot of arguments about how she just didn’t understand how the world worked.

Cassian learned very keenly how the world worked when the Hayllians invaded Askavi and her mother was killed in that raid. Cassian was barely into her second century of life then. The year was 362 before the Purge. She would remember it clearly for the rest of her days.

Disconsolate, Cassian spent months, maybe a year, trying to rise out of the grief that surrounded her. Had she not gotten pregnant with Aluvar, she might have remained in that dark state. Her son was the result of another mistaken sexual encounter, though after she discovered her pregnancy, Aluvar’s father did try to make some sort of amends. They were a poor match though and Cassian parted ways with the man long before Aluvar’s Birthright, though she granted paternity just in case things changed in the future.

Aluvar became Cassian’s light in the dark. Being a mother suited Cassian enough, even though it was rough, and she finally felt a sense of balance that she had been missing. She taught Aluvar all of the good things that she felt was missing in their world now -- how to be kind, how to be selfless, how to help others.

She cried tears of joy when he received his White Birthright. She cried tears of sorrow when he was sent to the hunting camps to learn the ways of a warrior. She feared her little boy would grow up to be a terrible monster like all of the other men of her people. Her younger brother Cannevar offered to look after Aluvar as much as possible and Cassian believed that guidance kept her son from forgetting everything she had taught him.

The Great War ended soon after and Cassian found herself in a new chapter of life. No longer did she tend as many wounded warriors -- she oversaw births, eased the pains of old age. There were still wounds to heal but not as many and the haunted look she hated in men’s eyes showed up less. She felt, for the first time in her life, that she was on her way to thriving and not just surviving. It not always easy, caring for her brother, but she adapted to this new lifestyle over time, and came to enjoy it. Her son came to visit her often and she watched, relieved, as he grew into the kind of man she had hoped: a warrior, yes, but a compassionate man underneath.

She was invited to take up a position in the capital of Askavi shortly before Endevar Ranosi returned to seize control of the region. By now, she had gathered a reputation for being a solid, dependable Healer, and she found herself also working with the Territory Court Healer from time to time. When Ranosi vanished, Cassian was offered a place in the Court’s Second Circle. She thought that she would have more time to train with her mentor but that was not to be. When her predecessor unexpectedly died to a rebel ambush, Cassian became Court Healer, feeling very much out of place in such a tumultuous environment.

Character in Play:
“I’ll be back before sunset, okay, Cann?” Cassian told her younger, broken brother in a pleasant, reassuring voice as she packed up what she would need for the day and fetched her cloak. “Not too long, Cann, okay?” she added for extra measure. “And we’ll have dinner like normal. I won’t be late.”

Cassian had learned to give Cannevar plenty of words like this in the many decades of caring for him. Reminding him that she would be back, that there wouldn’t be any interruption to their normal, easy to follow day kept him from slipping into a panic, which usually was followed by him slipping into the borders of the Twisted Kingdom. Once there, Cannevar couldn’t tell friend from foe and had a tendency to wander out of the house or hurt himself in his insanity. Cassian always thought she had locked away all of the sharp objects behind Tiger Eye doors but there always one she missed somewhere and Cannevar inevitably found it.

“Okay,” came the quiet, trusting voice from the other room. Sweeping her cloak around her shoulders, Cassian briskly came to his side and kissed the top of his head. Cannevar was drawing something, happily engrossed in the pretty colors. Some days, he acted like a very large, winged child. Some days, he acted like his old self, still sweet but a man who saw reality for what it was. And some days…

Well, Cassian was grateful that Cannevar hadn’t had one of his bad days lately. In a long time, actually. Those days were grueling and left them both exhausted. And she couldn’t always call their brother Cassadar to come help. He was busy raising Cannevar’s son, as well as all of his own children. Well, raising wasn’t the proper term, since they were mostly grown up, but Cassadar was still guiding them since Cannevar just couldn’t.

“Be good,” Cassian admonished her brother lightly, ruffling his hair as she swept out the door and took flight. Hopefully, this interview would be brief but productive. If she got the position, it would be a good change in funds for her, which meant that she could take care of Cannevar better. Such thoughts were always on her mind, ever since the Purge, after waking up to realize that her brother had sacrificed his Jewels and his sanity to protect her from the blast.

The least she could do was see about this position in the capital. Cannevar used to like cities. Maybe this would help him heal further. She could only hope, as she winged towards her future.

It's a vicious garbage spewing bucket, and that's why it has no friends.
