Distinguishing Features:
Kestian’s wings are ebony with splotches of white imperfections that run along the edges of the bones to the tips. A large white spot, void of any color sits on her right wing with a smaller one about the size of a fist on the left in jagged circles, as though the color is being melted away from the leathery curtains. Her vitiligo extends down her legs as well giving them an uneven, freckled appearance.

Personality

Personality:

Kestian is the kind of person who can come out of a horrible situation with a smile on her face. Most of the time, its genuine too. She believes that there is no greater reward than seeing something through to completion, and if a life is saved in the process, all the better for it. While Kestian does not pretend to be completely altruistic, she is a workhorse who carefully maps out her time and strength for the best outcome. She is often seen as someone who is reliable, hardworking and confident enough to stand her ground when she needs to.

Kestian switches hats between being a leader and a follower. As a War Camp Healer, she knows what it takes to navigate complex personalities as well as the natural Eyrien instinct. Males are difficult to work with especially when injured and enraged and their stubbornness is legendary. Kestian knows how to stand toe to toe with warriors, especially with those who she has had previous encounters with..Its more than courage, it's about not fueling that rage while still allowing it to burn. In her Eyrie Kestian is organized and methodical. Perhaps it's the Estaroth blood running in her veins, but she likes things the way she likes them and her stubbornness can be difficult to maneuver. It is not rare to find her arguing over limitations cast down by the Wardens. She is hot tempered but also quick to cool. Her silence, often misinterpreted, is actually her considering how she's feeling through more logical reasoning.

There are so many other Territories she has not explored and Kestian yearns to one day experience them all. Her thirst for adventure sometimes drives her to take foolish risks. She loves to fly and fall with equal measure, and has even considered completing the runs in defiance of her father’s wishes.

In private Kes is kind, generous and unconcerned about other people’s opinion of her. For her whole she has been different, her coloring was not quite right, a flaw she has refused to completely heal. She finds beauty in the unique and it affords her attention she sometimes craves. Kestian feels she was meant to stand out, and her spots are just proof of that.

Though she may seem calm under pressure she is far more worried than she ever lets on. She has a habit of understating how much some people mean to her, only because males tend to let their passions run high, but they are hollow things with little depth. Having seen so much blood shed, and having failed in saving lives in the past, she finds it hard form connections with people she has just met. Bonds take time, and that is a commodity most warriors do not have.

Age has taught her that there is a lack of permanence, everything inevitably changes and no Eyrien in their right mind would lock themselves down to one thing. This is why she has not maintained many long lasting romantic relationships. She feels Children are a blessing, but she would not want to bring any warriors into a dying land haunted by the ghosts of their conquests and superiority. Kestian mourns for the past, but continues to step into the future because that is what Askavi needs.

Likes:
  • 1-Falling: The sound of the wind beating in her ears, the deafening stillness heralded by a sudden intake of breath, the rush of tumbling down to the earth as it rushes up to meet her. There is a submission in it, a reminder that despite how high she can fly, she too can fall, and catch herself.

  • 2- Males: For more reasons than the obvious, she finds them to be direct, they are not confusing, they do not play games. Males do not bother themselves by casting a net of mystique. It is that honesty of character that she values, whether or not she likes the male, she at least knows where she stands.  This is especially true of the Warlord Prince’s that she is so fond of tending to. Their their tempers are challenging to deal with especially when the scent of blood, be it their own or that of their brethren linger in the air, Kestian finds that raw passion alluring. As a war camp Healer she is trained to deal with difficult patients, but often times they are the most grateful.

  • 3- Being Right: If there is ever an opportunity for Kestian to point out that she was right she will do so without remorse and near giddy pleasure.  As a female, shes been given limitations her entire life by Warden’s, teachers and even her own family. The Estaroth’s are not humble people, they are leaders, warriors, legends, like Drakkar.  For the longest time shes been told what she can and cannot do, even up to how high she can fly. Being right makes her feel superior in the moment and no one can limit that.

    Dislikes:

  • 1- Being Cold: A benefit of living in the mountains are its breathtaking views. It can seem like Askavi goes on forever dotted by one snow cap to the next. The drawback is its bitter cold. Kestian does not enjoy the bite that comes with higher elevations. Though she can easily shield herself from it she finds it to be a drain on her jewels. Her vitiligo does not help matters as the depigmented sections are far more sensitive to light and extreme temperatures. If she could choose only one reason for her semi frequent wanderlust its the idea of basking in warmer climate.

  • 2- Being Controlled: Especially by the Wardens. Kestian has not had the best of luck with those chosen to look after the Eyrie and sooner or later their personalities clash. While Wardens serve a critical roll in protecting Healers, they, in her experience, use their position to control the women in their charge. Kestian believes that Healers should be revered, not just on paper but in action and that includes giving them freedom to learn to protect themselves as they often care for the most vulnerable.

  • 3- Being Rushed: Kestian likes to do things at her own pace. Craft speeds up healing already, but it can also cause harm if one is not careful. Warden’s have their wards best interest at heart, in her experience they can be impatient as well. Kestian hates working on other people’s schedules and believes that anything worth doing will take whatever time is appropriate.

    Fears:

  • 1- Starvation: There are not enough Queens to nourish the land, there is not enough food to feed its people. Though Kestian often stays within the Eyries with other battlefield Healers, she has heard the stories of emaciated Landen, she has watched men she knew before the purge, strong, agile males grow less robust over the centuries, babies dying in the womb because the mother could not find enough to eat. This is the worst death imaginable, a slow one.

  • 2- A new war: Wars are expensive. They have depleted Askavi’s reserves and their dignity. The Purge took everything else.  Her people are left broken, starving and paying those they conquered for the insult of it. War had lead to nothing but death, even the smallest victories seem inconsequential when compared to the loss. Kestian knows battle will always course through the blood of every Eyrien, but she fears a new war with Hayll. Drakkar’s hate of their long-lived cousins is well known, and now that he rules alongside his Queen, she fears that he will try and revive Askavi but only tear it further apart. Kestian truly feels he will not survive it.

  • 3- Having Children:  Askavi is not what it once was. Their people starve, the landen do not give their fair share while the Jhinka ravage what little they have left. They are a proud people, creating more soldiers than they are able to feed if only to spread Eyrien blood as though it was a salve that could cure all of Terrielle. The days when the land could provide are lost.  Kestian knows she is ripe for breeding, but the idea of bringing innocence into this world only so it can suffer is repulsive to her and even if she did raise them it would only be a matter of time before she could find them bloodied on a battlefield. Even though she is long lived, she can't imagine outliving her children.  As such Kestian is very careful about having enough brews on hand for herself and any other female who may need it. Askavi is not deserving of a child’s innocence until it is made right.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1- Diagnostic Craft: Kestian is a workhorse. She has an innate sense for locating bleeders that has only strengthened over the years as she's learned the full command of her jewels. Able to multi-task, her ability with diagnostic craft is such that she can do multiple things at once (such as keeping the patient on 'life support' - ensuring they continue to breathe - while also operating on them). This skill is invaluable as it also extends to her being able to keep tabs on another patient while working on the current one, ensuring that she is able to direct others as necessary in helping as many as possible.

  • 2- Bone Shaping:   As a battlefield surgeon, Kestian has seen some horrendous wounds and disfigurements. Her time as a battle field Healer has given her extensive experience in not only healing wounds, but reshaping, mending and regrowing bone.  This enables her to reattach limbs, correct facial disfigurements, strengthen weak bones from previous breaks, and even alter the skeletal structure of her patients as needed. Also in the case of Eyriens, she can expedite the renewal of broken or severed wings, even those lost some time ago.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1- Cooling and Heating:Perhaps its due to her vitiligo, or generally being cursed for being different, but this simple Craft is a point of frustration for her. While Kestian can heat herself to a certain degree its strength is just enough to ensure she does not freeze immediately. In the past she has likened the sensation to wearing a heavy coat, cumbersome and not at all comfortable. Though she can heat it is a drain on her jewels. One can imagine how difficult this makes it to live in Askavi. Cooling is another matter entirely as she simply cannot do it. Kestian sweats in the lowlands on the warmest months and must rely on her body’s natural processes to keep from overheating.

  • 2- Combat Shielding:Females are not allowed to fight in Askavi and as Healers are trained to focus their energies on more benign arts, Crafts like Combat Shielding tend to fall through the cracks. Though Kestian has tried to work on this Craft she can do no more than push a book off a table. Her combat shields are so weak they are less explosive and more akin to a shove.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Mailian Marvet- Yellow to Rose Witch Died in the purge
Father:  Lokar Estaroth- Rose to Purple Dusk Warlord  (leader of the Black Skies Rogue Camp) Born 3311 BP
Sister: Belian Marvet- Yellow- Rose Witch Born 1715 BP
Sister: Marcian Marvet - Rose- Purple Dusk- Witch- Born 1595 BP
Cousin: Drakkar Estaroth- Broken Blood Opal Warlord Prince Born 1828 BP

    History:

Kestian was born the third daughter of Lokar Estaroth and Mailian Marvet. While their union was not ideal, as the couple often ran hot and cold, they were always eager to welcome children into their lives. Lokar was convinced that a man’s measure was only as long as they could spread their name. First came Belian, then Marcian and finally Kestian. If having his seed produce only three females bothered Lokar in any way, he did not show it. Mailian was a dutiful mother, but oftentimes neglectful to her mate.

It was clear the Darkness had blessed Kestian as a Healer at an early age. As a child she was empathetic, and highly in tune with her siblings. If one uttered even the most minor discomfort, it was Kestian who soothed them. It was also clear that she was different. It had begin with a few strands of white hair at the top of her brow and little by little the deep ebony tone of her wings began to fade as if melting away. It had taken a few years for the spots to become big enough to cause a concern. Mailian rushed her youngest to Drakar’s older sister Rellian who seemed to balk at the young girl’s ailment. She was born with vitiligo, a mutation that would mark her for the rest of her life. The good news was that they could heal it for a time, the bad news was that Kestian was fond of her uniqueness.

Years after receiving her Opal Birthright she was sent to apprentice under Rellian Estaroth at the Healers Eyrie in Living Lake. There, Kestian learned to control her fear and even her scent in the presence of angry maes so that their pain could be eased and they could return to battle.  Kestian was kept away from the males when she was not healing and even then she was monitored very closely until her Offering, where she was graced with a Sapphire jewel.. Soon enough she earned the affectionate nickname of Swallow tail from the hardened warriors she tended to.  Kestian’s fascination of the body and her deep passion for those willing to fight for her beloved Askavi fed her desire to learn. Her father was after all the Warlord leader of the Thousand Skulls War Camp, and Cousin to Drakkar Estaroth. All she could ever think to do was honor them.

It was also at this time when she met and befriended Tavar, son of the leader of the Blood Seekers that Drakkar belonged to after he was injured. The two, still young, became fast friends and confidants. To Kestian, Tavar was different, he did not have the cutting edge of temper as her cousin Drakkar did. It made him easier to confide in.

When Rellian was sent away to the fields she was put in charge for a few centuries. Connections were forged with the leaders of the War Camps and she lobbied for a network that could keep Healers better connected across the Living Lake Province. This included having escorted runners that could train in each Eyrie and develop tested techniques. Their men could only gain from having well rested and educated Healers. Navigating a males temper was a difficult task, if they could discuss ways to soothe the warriors then their work would be more effective.

Still Kestian found herself restless to do more. While she could have settled in as a journey Healer in the Eyrie, but she wanted to be closer to Drakkar and Tavar, if only so that she could be there if they needed her. Drakkar’s body was a tapestry of old wounds and she trusted no one more than herself or Rellian to keep him calm as his countenance was less malignant around family.

362 years before the Purge, Hayll launched a counter attack on Askavi, slaughtering thousands, including Drakkar’s wife, daughter and several members of their family.  This cowardly attack killed so many innocents and left a gaping hole in many families, including her own. Kestian was visiting her childhood home at the time and welcoming the birth of her sister’s second child when Hayllans came. Lokar was there and he was able to fend off the attack when the community rallied. Kestian’s jewels would nearly be taxed that night to the breaking.

It was she and her father who had to inform Drakkar of these losses. Drakkar blamed Illyrian for the death of his family, specifically, but blamed all the Queens for not doing enough to help their people survive the onslaught. Kestian could not fault him for his anger, not after the death of people that mattered the most to them. Soon after Tavar was deployed to Hayll. It was a sad farewell, and she was sure to let Tavar know in no uncertain terms that he was to return intact or suffer her wrath.

Her wrath would pale in comparison to that of Witch’s. In 0 BP the purge occurred. The night before Askavi was changed irrevocably, Kestian was tended to wounded in the Blood Seekers Camp. They flowed in on a tide of blood and grief. The Jhinka attacked and many of their men were wounded. Healers throughout Living Lake were dispatched, but even so their numbers ran thin. Knowing the men under Drakkar’s watch so well, she saw it as her duty to make sure as many of them lived for his return. The day dragged on, each wound worse than the next. There were bones to mend, flesh to bind. War gave her a preview into the most horrifying wounds. That night she was utterly exhausted, her jewels drained, her Warden was even forced to pull her from the field and order her to rest. A night of passion ensued and then the sweet caress of nothingness.

Everything she knew would be gone. Including the male sworn to protect her. His last act, a foolish attempt to shield his ward, she would find him dead and bleeding by the next morning.

The pain was horrific, but she had been swept up in the Purge, and released onshore, her jewels intact. Perhaps it was because they were already weak or because she didn't have the strength to fight the current. Kestian was one of the lucky few. The same could not be said for Drakkar or their people.

Eyriens returned to Askavi, beaten despite a war they should have won. Kestian rested, only long enough to seek out what was left of her kin and then flew out to Living Lake. The days turned into weeks and she still could not find her cousin or mother. As the days passed, incident reports flew in. Her mother’s body was located in her sister’s house, Drakkar was alive but gravely wounded. Tavar had not reported back. Her sisters and father were spared, but her eldest sibling Belian lost her first child and her Jewel. Kestian dedicated herself to saving Drakkar’s wings and body, though there was little she could do about the pain and rage he felt.

For over the next hundred and fifty years she worked as a Healer under the service of the Living Lake Court. There she learned that navigating politicians was far more complicated that dealing with angry males. Still it afforded her a higher level of education and her triage skills are taught to court Healers so that they too could be dispatched to their communities if need be.

In 191, Lokar informed his daughter of a potential opportunity in the Territory Court. Drakkar had killed the Illyrian Kriat’s Consort and then in a twist of irony, found himself bound to her and is to this day the Warlord Prince of Askavi as partial ruler. Kestian hoped this will finally smooth some of her cousin’s rough edges. Since then Kestian Marvet has been travelling from Eyrie to Eyrie lending a hand and training to young Healers as a Court’s liaison. Her relationship with Drakkar is only mildly strained as his protectiveness has grown to a exhaustive degree over the years. As she does not have children herself, she has spent the better part of two years tending to the wives of warriors still battling the Jhinka threat during their pregnancies, though she itches to return back to the camps that she has always known.

    Character in Play:

Kestian could count in one hand how many times Drakkar Estaroth had called for her. In over a thousand years they had managed to gather together, simply  to be around family. They had both lost so much, but to Kes it felt as though her cousin was dealt the worst hand. It was not as if they weren't close, they were, as much as long-lived could be. Years melded together, great swaths of time that seemed to just flitter from their fingertips. When reunions were possible, it was met with great joy and affection.

Meetings were not. Drakkar had always been a man of action. Before his mother was murdered, she had told Kestian a great many stories of Drakkar’s stubbornness and how his will was a force upon itself. Unfortunately, so was Kestian’s, though she was a bit more reserved and sociable when displaying her wrath.  If her cousin simply wanted a visit he would have stopped by her Eyrie, but he hadn't, which meant this convergent was more about business.

She was remembering their last argument, about ten years ago when he insisted she be moved to a different Eyrie closer to his seat. He presented the idea as if it was a matter of her safety, and had nothing to do with the rumors that her previous Warden was lax in his duties, especially when it came to Kestian. No, he wanted to keep her close, to him, to family and he would have no argument over it. Soon the discussion rooted into far more critical matters and ignited a debate on everything from Hayll, to Askavi’s reparations, and even to her father, who was more than happy to backup Drakkar.  In the end, she lost and grudgingly agreed to do as he demanded.

The doors to the patio opened and a servant motioned her entreaty. Drawing her wings tightly behind her, she watched as the male glanced down, caught off guard by the large white sections of asymmetrical flesh. Snapping them open just a bit she arched a brow at him with a smirk as if daring him to comment before entering. Drakkar was not a man of opulence, not when his people were suffering. The  patio was humble enough, overlooking a swatch of curious mountains that seemed to race into the heavens. Food was set out oh a small round table, a set of cushioned stools waited on either side. “Cousin.”  she greeted, and the anger of past grievances faded from her immediate memory. He had always had a severe way about him, and even now he could not sit still long enough to receive her. “Its good to see you Draka.”  she smiled offering the moniker she had given him as a child. “Why do I have the feeling I shouldn't get too comfortable?”
