Seminar on Conversation Style Writing

Dani, White and myself will be hosting a seminar on conversation style writing. This is something that the three of us use when the situation best calls for it and we believe hugely in it.

This style of writing allows for the writers to have a deeper level of interaction in the thread with more dialogue and less 'fluff' or internal monologue. It makes for good conversation and great witty responses. And it helps to move along the RP and foster growth.

Some examples are: Ruthless in the Face of Beauty (Scelt) and the end of Every Exit has an Entrance (Dharo).

We will host 2 sessions- limited to 4 people a piece to keep it small and intimate. If there is demand for it we can do a 3rd session as well. When reply to sign up please indicate which session you can do- and if you are interested but are unavailable at the times listed please reply and let us know.

I'd be interested in a Sunday slot.
"In the Tarot deck, the Fool is depicted as a young man about to step off a cliff into empty air. Most people assume that the Fool will fall. But we don't see it happen, and a Fool doesn't know that he's subject to the laws of gravity. Against all odds, he just might float."

I'm glad to see the 3 of you have signed up!

We're still hoping to have more for each session. Please take a look at the times and come join us. I think you'll find it useful as a plot device and it will help you drive stronger dialog based threads.

It's up to you, Crafty. If Sunday works best then we'll host Sunday too. It may give other writers a chance to see the value and join us!

Tonight we hosted our first ever Seminar/Knowledge Sharing session. The topic was "Conversation Driven RP".

Many thanks to those who attended (Blue, Miranda, Sinda and Sera) and thanks to those who helped host the event (White and Dani).

Here is a summary of what we discussed tonight. If you have questions or require further explanation don't hesitate to reply to this thread and one of us will be sure to help out. If you would like to engage in one of these styles of RP with any of us (Dani, White or myself) please reach out and we'll all gladly accomodate where RP allows for the interaction.

Converation Driven RP

THE PURPOSE
When you do play by post RPing there is a lot of fluff, though it is not always unecessary it does clog down the pace of your story.
The character based interactions are lost in the muck of their own thought and circumstances.
Let me reiterate- this is not always bad.
It is up to you to identify moments when you can focus on dialog and moments where you should focus on situational elements and inner monologue.
Conversation driven RP allows for a swifter moving scene and one that is more in tune with the genre in which we write.
If you look at the average thread could you imagine seeing this in a published novel? Unlikely.
Typically there are 300 words of thought or situational observations and less than 50 words of actual conversation which is what drives the story.

THE 2 FORMS
1. The writers fully write the scene by taking turns for character point of view. This most closely reflects the way we write in play by post, giving each person a chance to react individually. The flow is then put into a post and put up. So it would be like.. 1 paragraph in Character A’s POV.. 2nd paragraph in Character B’s POV.
EX (from MN): http://z9.invisionfree.com/Mother_Night/index.php?showtopic=3433
Perfect example. You’ll notice how the point of view shifts between the characters.. and you’ll see Brice’s point of view in a Rosaline post.

2. The writers outline the scene, focusing only on immediate and noticeable reactions (a smile, a huff of outrage) and the dialog.
Then that outline is broken into segments for each writer to post. Each writer fleshes out their section. You maintain the shifting points of view but they’re more cohesive to read.
There are a few examples at BR: http://forums.bloodrites.net/index.php?topic=107.0
That is the latest. It is between White and myself.
The beginning of the thread is our individual posts which gave us an opportunity to set the scene. Then we dove into this method. You can see that in Linnel’s posts Brine does speak and haveh is reactions that Linnel can read. And vice versa

My favored is personally the 2nd type. However, with this one specifically you have to have a CLOSE relationship with the person you’re writing with and hold them in close trust.
They will be handling your character a bit in their posts and you need to make sure you’re comfortable with that before jumping into this method/style.
Especially as you are allowing them to fill in the fine details so I agree. I tend to want to RP either post or Method 1 before doing Method 2

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Jamie as Mistress of the Points, how do you want these posts formatted?
A: If you are posting as Method 1; I ask that you either a) tabulate the word count for EACH writer and post it to the bottom of the post.. or b) my preferred version: color code the writing.. I usually recommend by Jewel and I will do the points for the thread. With Method 2: Points will be awarded based on whoever makes the post.

I would also point out.. that if you want to use any of these methods just ping myself, Dani or White and we’ll help you out. If you want us to be your first.. well I’m sure between one of us you can find a willing partner
