Disallowing "Underage" Characters on Blood Rites
« on: Aug 09, 16, 01:01:43 PM »
Blood Rites continues to grow and mature, and so do the stories we tell here in their darkness, edginess and complexity. Given the nature of our plot lines up to today, and the amazing stories we have in the works, we recognize Blood Rites caters primarily to adult characters.

To that end, as of this posting, all new player characters must be at least 18 years old.

At the same time, we recognize that YA literature continues to grow in popularity, and we love stories about coming-of-age. Blood Rites and the BJT universe have a great advantage in that this universe considers age 20 to be the age when adulthood begins. You can still explore themes of coming to terms with adulthood, leaving childhood behind, the purity of youth and new ideas vs. the established and corrupt -- a full range of stories where young people play a vital role.

For the purposes of those kinds of stories, an 18-year-old in the Blood Rites universe is still very much considered a kid by those adults around them. In long lived races, though they still make their offerings around age 20, the span of adolescence ranges in the hundreds of years, which gives plenty of room to explore these themes without creating a character under 18.

If your story does require a character age 17 or younger, you may use a registered NPC (information on that process found here).

Furthermore, younger characters who are currently in play may continue to be played. Their ages must continue to advance every year, like all characters, but you are still welcome to play them on the board. Inactive characters who were age 17 or under must be advanced in age to 18 when you petition to have them reactivated.

Characters age 17 and under in progress -- those currently in the keep and plotted out with a member of the plot council -- may be completed.

Blood Rites is a vibrant community of writers, and we continue to be blown away by the imaginative characters and situations you create here every day. As always, our goal is to provide a framework that supports that creativity.

At this time, we feel strongly that enforcing a minimum age on characters is the best way to support and foster the stories our community seems most excited to tell.

Given the nature of the blood rites universe I've found it very stressful to even play my one almost 18-year-old (Khadi), and keep everything both legal and clean enough for a kid. There's still lots of room to play with coming of age, and it'll be a lot less stress!

Speaking for myself and not HBC "officially" ...

I am really, really happy that there is so much support for this. It is sincerely never easy to put restrictions on the board. My experience with everyone on HBC is just a sincere desire to keep this a fun place that runs smoothly.

So glad that this really reflects the desires of most of the board.
