* Plot Informaton for Scelt

Scelt is a Territory in turmoil and peace is tenuously held together by the Sceltic Queens. Rivalry between the Clans errupted into horror for the Territory that resulted in many dead, on both sides, and culimated in Clan Sheane being outlawed in the Territory. Further troubles plague the Territory in a variety of manners - Landen villages are raided, Courts are attacked, and no one seems to be safe.

Stacking the Deck

The bitter disappointment of having Calum defect from her care and bed had lingered for months. That the man had escaped her comfortable safe house and traces of another Black Widow had been left in his wake was a point of contention between Saskia and her apprentices. The sanctity of her safe house had been compromised by their incompetence. She had tied many of the protection spells to sense their Jewels to grant them safe passage to and from the safe house. The other Black Widow must have piggy-backed on their safe passage in order to extract the Black Widow Warlord Prince who had been warming Saskia’s bed enthusiastically for weeks.

After that intrusion of her privacy and space Saskia had abandoned the safe house, but not before lacing it with a variety of traps should any fool dare to venture within again.

It had taken Saskia weeks more to find a new safe house and evict the residents. Enough blood had been spilt to ensure that she would be given her privacy, and she had blasted any memories of the location or her Initiative from their minds. There wasn’t much left in those minds afterwards but Saskia didn’t much care since it ensured her own safety. New and improved webs and spells protected the safe house, and this time Saskia ensured that there would be no loopholes to be found.

After all the anger, hurt and another dose of anger eventually wore off Saskia came to a simple conclusion. If a natural male Black Widow was not available then she would have to make one. The Black Widow caste, after all, could be trained if one showed any aptitude towards the craft.

This decision posed an operational problem given that Saskia was in Scelt, and no Sceltic male in their right mind would agree to train into a Black Widow caste. Or would they?

Saskia had once considered Brennan Devlin as a target for her machinations in the very early days of her operation. Long before she had apprentices and others helping her with the webs and the management of her growing enterprise. She had been desperate to make a statement against the Killan Court and given Brennan’s affiliation with the Devlin Clan and the Killan Court he seemed like a decent choice. Especially considering that he was much easier to reach due to his estrangement than those who were under the protection of the Court and Clan. She had learned a great deal regarding his estrangement from Clan Devlin and the Killan Court, which had made him a less interesting target. But now it made him a person of interest.

What she knew about Brennan made him very appealing for her latest experiment. Growing up in Clan Devlin it was unlikely he would fear Black Widows in the same manner most Scelts did, especially as a contemporary of Loreniel Killan. He had a bone to pick with his family and it was not a situation that looked to be easily reconciled, and that seemed to extend to Clan Doyle and Clan Killan as well. If Saskia could channel his anger and pain into her own work she would have, seemingly, a perfect partner in crime.

Having made the decision to choose Brennan as her next experiment Saskia patiently stalked her prey for a few weeks and learned what few routines he had and where she might cross paths with him. It helped her cause that Brennan reportedly had an appreciation for redheads.

Saskia entered the rough looking tavern near the docklands neighbourhood of Tuathal. She’d followed Brennan to the tavern and given him enough time to settle inside the building before she dropped her shields and entered. Her Sapphire was the only Jewel she wore and would be seen as a means of protection for a woman alone in this part of town. The Gray was safely hidden and her Caste carefully masked.

Once inside the tavern she waited until she was in Brennan’s line of sight before she casually lowered the hood of her cloak, exposing her luminous red hair, and once the cloak was vanished she wore a dress that might make some of the dockworkers blush. Service from the barkeep was lightning fast and she was drinking a frothy ale moments later.

Home looked a lot different after time away.

Well, Tuathal was his home after a fashion, because his family lived here with their Queen. Their Queen, not his. Loreniel Killian was a monster and a murderer, a killer of innocent women and children who’d not harmed her. Sure, she had an issue with a few of the Sheanes who’d allegedly acted out, but that was no justification for a death sentence on the whole of the clan. Now his wife’s family was scattered to the winds, and Caprice herself was dead, too. That part hurt more than anything else, especially on nights like tonight, when he thought back to how they met.

Brennan Devlin drank his whisky slowly, letting the burn flow through him. Sadly, this stuff wasn’t going to get him drunk. He preferred non-spelled varieties for that reason. Getting drunk in a place like this would draw the wrong kind of attention to him, and he didn’t want the Devlins knowing he was back before he was good and ready to tell them. He’d reach out to his father first, followed by one of his siblings, probably one of the strays. If he was ever going to right the wrongs done to his chosen family, he needed his birth family to remain in the dark.

Still can’t believe that Davos is gone. He would’ve been a huge help. Don’t blame him, though. He left this shitshow and didn’t look back. I’m too fuckin’ stupid to stay gone.

Devlin drank, had a little food, and drank a bit more, generally uncaring of the people around them, though he kept an eye on the ones who looked rowdy enough to do something dumb. A lot of the dockhands came to this tavern because most of the aristos didn’t and Brennan liked that about this place. Still, anyone who had a problem with the Prince being there wouldn’t find an easy target. Brennan was in the process of working out a new plan when a flash of red appeared in his peripheral. He looked toward it and the red hair caught him off-guard.

Caprice…

He shook his head. No. She wouldn’t be here. Caprice was gone.

The woman wore a cloak, which she quickly vanished, and her dress (if it could be called that) turned heads and caught eyes. A little voice in the back of Brennan’s head sized up the situation. She could be a Red Moon woman. That didn’t matter. The woman would have to be an utter idiot to be unaware of the tavern she’d entered. The men here weren’t known for courtly polish.

What does that say about you?

He pushed that thought aside when he realized he’d been staring.

He turned his attention to the barkeep, who came over quickly. Brennan said something to him and the barkeep moved away. The barkeep brought Brennan another whisky and then moved over to Saskia.

What can I get to you, lady?” the barkeep asked respectfully.

The young lad at the end of the bar would like to buy you a drink.

The gaze of the Black Sheep was hot against her skin but Saskia feigned indifference. The Black Widow knew that she was striking with her ginger hair, even in Scelt, and that it would be a particular draw to this man. Ever since her Offering she truly understood the type of power she held over men and that the allure of her feminine form was oftne hard for them to ignore. Even when they knew she was a dangerous and feared Black Widow. Sceltic men had no difficulty following their base desires when it came to Black Widows but they would never consider a serious relationship with one. Saskia had learned that particular dissappoinment the hard way and it had resulted in a broken heart and a soured disposition towards Sceltic men.

This man was different though. And Saskia could train him to be perfect with enough time and patience. At the heart of it all she wanted to be loved and appreciated, not feared and hated.

Dressing up in such a manner and hiding her caste would ensure that her physical needs would be met. Even that proved to be a challenge for a Black Widow at times. Some men enjoyed a walk on the wild side but others were fearful of the spell of seduction a Black Widow could weave. Saskia found it far easier to mask her caste and seduce a man with her looks and sexuality alone, without the fearful scent of a Black Widow lingering between her and her prey.

Brennan Devlin succumbed rather quickly to Saskia's enjoyment and amusement.

The ale was nearly gone by the time Brennan Devlin had made his move. With a sultry glance she looked across at the "young lad" who had offered her the drink. The glance evolved into a welcoming smile that promised pleasures beyond his wildest imagination.

"I'll have what the lad is drinking." She told the barkeep who was quick to deliver the whisky. Once the drink was delivered she sauntered across the tavern and took a long draw of the whisky, letting it roll across her tongue and warm her from the inside. The winter chill lingered in the air but the promise of spring wasn't far off, yet she still appreciated the warmth a properly aged whisky could bring. It wasn't as smooth as she would have liked and she guessed it was on the younger side of the law, perhaps 7 years old instead of the more popular 10 years aged. Exactly what she would have expected from a tavern such as this.

"Thanks for the whisky, love." The man was fair, far more fair than she normally appreciated, but there was enough brawn there to keep her well entertained. He was rumoured to be an intelligent sort but Saskia planned to assess that for herself before broaching the topic of apprenticeship. Taking him to bed first would help her understand just the kind of man he was beneath the attractively brooding exterior.

When the lady’s gaze sought him out, Brennan lifted his drink and nodded to her in a mock-toast. She didn’t look offended or displeased, so Brennan considered that a mark in his favor for the moment. He’d waited a little bit before buying her the drink, not wanting to seem too eager. Brogan had the timing down, knew the ways to make women eat out of the palm of his hand. Brennan had never had any of that, but what he couldn’t do naturally, he could make up for with a liberal application of Seduction Craft when the moment called for it.

Right now, he just wanted her to come closer.

When she finally rose and made her way to his table, Brennan smiled. He sat his drink down and pushed out his chair, rising smoothly to his feet. He pulled out the chair to his right and focused his blue eyes on her face, though his gaze dipped just enough to take in the rest of her form. She probably fucked like a wild cat. Just a regular old Sapphire Witch, huh?

He could deal with that.

You’re welcome. You probably have strangers trying to buy you drinks all the time, but don’t worry. I’m not some crazy stalker. Haven’t seen you around here before. Then again, I only just got back home. So I’m trying to make new friends.” Brennan said.

Care to join me and keep a man from drinkin’ alone?” he asked, gesturing to the chair he’d pulled out. If she sat, he’d do the same and get comfortable right away. He took another sip of his drink and then held up a finger as though he’d just remembered something important in that second.

Where the hell my manners, my Lady? My name is Brennan. Brennan Devlin. And yeah, of those Devlins in case you’re wondering.” he said, heading off the question he always seemed to get as soon as he mentioned his name. He hated that question, hated the associations it drew with the rest of the family, but he couldn’t separate himself from them, no matter how hard he tried.

May I ask the name of my drinking buddy for the night?

There were some men who would have balked at seeking bed sport with a woman who openly wore a darker Jewel than them, but Brennan seemed to take no issues with what Saskia put on display. There were others who were aroused at the thought of bedding a darker and more dangerous woman. That didn’t seem to be the case with Brennan Devlin; no he seemed to merely appreciate all that was put before him without reading too deeply. Her Gray Jewel and natural Caste were well concealed and he had bought the appearance of her Sapphire as reality, she had watched as his gaze caresses her body, and spied her Jewel.

The gentlemanly tact of drawing her chair out brought a smile to Saskia’s face and she lowered herself to the proffered seat. She placed the whisky on the table directly in front of her and leaned forward to create a more intimate environment between herself and the Prince; it served a double purpose of putting her cleavage on display. The goal was to have him thinking with his cock rather than his brain so she could lead him away like a lamb to the slaughter.

“My friends call me Kia. I hope you will as well.” She supplied, harking back to his comment about making new friends. There was a promise in the depths of her eyes as she stared at him across the table. Kia was never a nickname she would have tolerated but it would ring of truth, rather than a lie, if someone inspected her too closely.

“Those Devlins. So you’re one of the Queen’s men?” Saskia questioned, running the tip of her finger along the rim of her whisky glass. “I wouldn’t have thought one of the Queen’s men would make himself at home in a dockside tavern.” The statement was a challenge from the Black Widow and a test; she wanted to assess his true emotions towards the Court of Scelt, Clan Devlin, and the bitch who betrayed her kind - Loreniel Killan.

Brennan was just looking for a good time this evening, one that didn’t come with any extra entanglements or strange feelings the day after. Sakia’s darker jewels only added to the intrigue. The Blood were sensual, sexual creatures; even the Blood Males and Females hungered for sex and power. Those hungers multiplied as their standing in the Abyss increased. Brennan, for his part, believed that it was true. He craved action and endeavors that tested his mind and body in tandem. He wasn’t a sex-crazed Warlord Prince or a workaholic Warlord that couldn’t enjoy life.

Brennan Devlin was a Prince, with enough mind to enjoy what life handed him but to take what he wanted as well.

Like the woman before him.

Well met, Kia. I’ll call you Kia if you’re good. If you're bad, I’ll call you anything you like.” Brenna said, his tone teasing. He had to know if she was too far up her own ass to play around before he continued. Nothing ruined a good bit of fun more than someone who couldn’t take a joke or engage in a little bit of verbal sparring beforehand. Brennan took another sip of his drink and smiled at her.

Until she suggested that he was one of the Queen’s men.

Brennan laughed, a sound somewhere between surprised and bitter. Was that how it was anymore? If you were a Devlin, you were automatically one of Loreniel Killian’s lapdogs? Brennan’s blood boiled a little at the thought. He wasn’t necessarily mad at Kia, but at the way things turned now to give people such a shitty impression of his family.

Whoa, hold a second, Kia. If we have any aspirations to be friends, let’s, uh, dispel some bullshit right now. Not every Devlin belongs to our esteemed Queen.” Brennan said, fighting to keep the snarl out of his voice. He had to take another sip of his drink to keep himself from elaborating on just how wrong her assumption was.

Fucking Brogan. Making us all look like mindless shitbags just because he’s got his head lodged up Loreniel’s ass.

I’m not with the Territory Court. In fact, I just returned home after some time away.” Brennan said, shrugging.

I’m just out to enjoy a drink and some good company. That’s all, really.” he said, his smile returning when he looked at her. His posture even relaxed a bit, though it had tensed when she brought up Loreniel.

Fucking bitch.

Saskia payed close attention to the Prince’s reactions to her gentle probing, and was thoroughly satisfied with the results she had conjured. It would take a bit more effort to seduce him after offending him but it had been worth the risk. Now she knew that he suited her initial plans, to recruit him to her cause, and that she wouldn’t be forced to merely attempt to turn him into a Pawn for the Lace Initiative. The Dark Jewel would have made him a challenge, but she’d broken others just as Dark before so it wasn’t impossible.

The plans she had for this man, however, far surpassed anything she had managed to pull off to date. And there were still several more hedge jumps to complete before she could even begin the real work.

“I do so love being bad.” She had teased him back, enjoying the moment before the mood changed drastically.

Saskia glanced over her shoulder at the barkeep and exchanged a nod to bring more alcohol. It was going to take quite a bit to win this man back over to her side and cause. She finished the glass that Brennan had provided before proceeding.

“Well that’s a relief. I’d had to get entangled with that Court.” Saskia frowned for effect. Boldly she reached forward to run her thumb over his knuckles in a soothing motion, but the caress was laced with a great deal of promise. “We want the same things, Brennan. Drink and,” Her green eyes bore into his with far more than promise this time. “Company. Good company is such a challenge to find, after all.” Slowly she withdrew her hand from his as the barkeep arrived with their next round of scotch; she lifted the fresh glass to her lips without breaking eye contact.

Was it enough yet? Saskia wasn’t sure but she was poised to start the ritual of seduction if he was not bold enough to do so himself.

The more important question was: Could he be the one? She suspected as much and his strong reaction to her accusation had been a good sign in his favour. Yet there was much more she needed to gauge before she made such a strong commitment to her cause, or any man.

Brennan’s eyes wandered over Kia’s cleavage without remorse or shame. He wanted to know what else lay beneath her cloak, but he cautioned himself to patience. If he appeared too eager, like some fresh boy just looking to sheathe himself and spill, Kia might decide he wasn’t worth the trouble. Too cool, however, and she might mistake his actions for lack of interest. So Brennan leaned back in his chair, leaving one arm extended on the table. She stroked that hand for a moment before calling for more drinks.

Yeah, you would hate to get entangled with that Court. Last group of unfortunates to do that ended up pretty dead.” Brennan said. Referring to the Sheanes by name wasn’t allowed nowadays, since Loreniel Killian had murdered them without mercy. But people knew the truth. They knew what had been done, even when they didn’t have the balls to speak on it. Brennan still couldn’t fathom how that ignoble bitch ruled the Territory. But then he remembered.

Brogan’s Gray jewel had a huge fucking hand in it.

Who knew where in or on Loreniel Brogan had his hands?

Look, let’s leave off the Territory Court. Nothin’ worth doin’ ever happens up here anyway. Not really. The real fun happens down south. Good pubs, better parties.” Brennan said.

He kept drinking as the alcohol flowed.

Where are you from, Kia? You got any siblings? I’ve got way too fuckin’ many. My fahter was always a bleedin’ heart. Anytime he saw a stray kid without a mommy or daddy, he took ‘em in so they wouldn’t be alone. In time, he came to love them more than his blood children. Of course, he loved some of his blood children different than others.” Brennan said. He shrugged.

I wouldn’t wish that shit on any--no, I’m lying. There’s only one person I’d really wish it on.” Brennan said.

Anyway, enough about me. Who are you, Kia?

The Black Widow felt a smug sense of satisfaction as she watched Brennan take in the cleavage she had placed temptingly on display. Despite his earlier prickly response to being linked to the Court of Scelt he was still interested in what Saskia had to offer.

His reference to the Sheanes struck Saskia as odd, but she had linked him to that particular Clan during her research of the Prince. As far as Saskia was concerned the only thing that Loreniel had done right during her reign was to eradicate that scourge from Scelt. Clan Sheane had been some of the cruellest persecutors of Black Widows in the history of Scelt and they deserved everything that had been delivered to them. Saskia’s complaint against Loreniel Killan was the six years of inaction she’d had at the start of her rule, and that she had not made any significant effort to ease the pain and plight of Scelt’s Black Widows.

Saskia wouldn’t argue with the man over the best Province in Scelt; as much as she hated the Court she acknowledged that Kilvary was by far the best Province. It was the most welcoming and forgiving towards Black Widows (though not by much).

A brief flicker of hatred reached her eyes at the question of siblings and family. What would it have been like to have been adopted by Brennan’s father? If she had grown up close to the Queen could she have influenced the woman into doing the right thing? It was a fantasy she only briefly considered. After all, he’d never adopted a Black Widow.

“Who am I?” Saskia pondered it for a moment, running the tip of her finger along the rim of her glass suggestively. “I live here in Tuathal, I find the city more lively and invigorating than the small villages that the average Scelt prefers.” There was no danger in admitting her preference for Tuathal, but it had more to do with her work than any actual appreciation. Saskia missed the call of the coast, the drama of waves crashing against harsh cliff faces, and with a salt brine always in the air.

“I have a sister but left my family many years ago. I was tired of being second best to her and seemingly always disappointing my father.” Normally Saskia wouldn’t reveal so much truth about herself but she had a sense that her admission of being second best might work in her favour with Brennan. “Briar was always the golden child.” She used a play on her sister’s name, Rois, to obscure the truth. “She could do no wrong. On the other hand, no matter what I did I was far more problematic.”

Taking a healthy swallow of the whisky, which she was barely feeling thanks to the blasted metabolism of a Gray Jewel, she frowned at the nearly empty glass. *Bring the bottle.* She passed the instruction to the barkeep across a private thread.

“I’ve left that all behind and set out on my own here in Tuathal. It’s been far more satisfying. Especially when I have friendly company.” The last came out as a softer purr to highlight the underlying meaning of ‘company’.

Kia’s words resonated with Brennan in a way that cut through the alcohol and got at the matters that plagued his own heart. For a moment, he wondered if she was crafting her words just for him. Or maybe if she was using Craft on him to make him more receptive. He dismissed the idea for a couple of reasons, though. The first was that he was too smart to be manipulated that way. She could play all the games she wanted, but Brennan wasn’t anyone’s tool.

The second was that Kia’s distaste felt real. Like him, she’d been cast aside because her father looked at her and saw disappointment. Saw a ‘black sheep’ where a confident and self-possessed woman stood.

Brennan understood that and he hated it.

I don’t blame you for cuttin’ ties. I get where you’re coming from, though. My old man looks at all of siblings, even the strays he took in, and sees the future of his lineage. Especially my older brother. He made good and found a Queen, so that makes him worth more in my father’s eyes.

I come from this old school where respect is earned. Standing up for yourself isn’t a sin. It should be second-nature.
” Brennan said.

Instead, I’m the bad guy because I won’t bow to thieves and killers trying to rewrite their shitty history.” Brennan said, taking a sip of his drink as he stared at nothing in particular. Anger burned in his gut as he remembered hearing about the massacre of the Sheanes. Nearly all of them, dead to the last, and none of the other clans stood up. None of the Province Queens got off their soft asses and stood up to Loreniel Killian because of her stable of males.

Not one fucking person in Scelt had the courage to stand up and tell her No. You are wrong.

Until now.

Brennan Devlin wasn’t the strongest man in Scelt. He wasn’t even the darkest. Not even close. Not as dark as Brogan or even Loreniel herself. But the Killian Clan had blood on its hands. They owed a Price to the Sheanes, to Scelt, and to everyone they’d wronged over the years.

If Davos Sheane was truly gone, then someone had strike back. Someone had to deal with them.

But how?

Sorry, Kia. Forgive me. I get a little angry when I think about how bad things are these days.” Brennan said.

Friendly company is all well and good, but if that’s what you’re looking for...you came to the wrong place.” he said, offering a small smile.

The anger in his tone resonated deep within Saskia's soul. But where his anger seemed focused on his family, and the Court of Scelt, her anger was across a far broader spectrum. The most recent unrest in the Territory was the outcome of thousands of years of oppression against the Black Widows.

In ancient Sceltic lore there were Black Widows who had the capability of placing curses on those who deserved it. Saskia hadn't figured out how to create such craft, but she'd certain tried to embrace the concept of a curse. Not one to accept defeat she'd found a talent in pure manipulation and mind control that was proving to be powerfully useful.

The source of Brennan's anger mattered little to Saskia. What mattered was if she could harness that anger to serve her own purposes and benefit the cause of her Lace Initiative. Saskia suspected that the pure chaos of her work would appeal to the man before her, but it was too soon to validate such an assumption.

There was work left to be done to woo Brennan across to her side of this fight.

"Don't suppress your anger on my behalf, Brennan. I'd be the first to encourage you to embrace it and stand up for yourself and what you believe in." Saskia had done just that; though she'd cloaked herself in shadows and tormented behind a wall of obscurity. Thus far none had linked the various events she'd orchestrated together. She suspected it would only be a matter of time before people began piecing the puzzle together, but by then she had hoped to ensure that her Pawns were in place for a spectacular event.

"I think we both know what I'm looking for." Saskia purred softly as her foot reached out beneath the table to caress his calf suggestively. "And it's not friendly company." Watching him carefully she lifted the whisky to her lips again and dared him to misunderstand her overt offer.

Brennan laughed when she told him to embrace his anger and stand up for himself. She was saying all the right things. Brennan was sick of letting people off the hook just because they held more power than him or stood deeper in the Abyss. His mother had been persecuted by those people for the dual crimes of being a Black Widow and a non-native of Scelt. For all the Black Widow bullshit he’d seen her endure, these people had still let a Black Widow rule Scelt and murder people because she wanted to.

He downed the rest of his drink as Kia rubbed her foot against his calf. She was playing games. Fortunately, Brennan liked games...especially when he was winning.

You’re the second person ever to encourage me to listen to the devil on my shoulder.” Brennan said, feeling himself stir at her touch. Part of him wondered at just how easily this woman had fallen into his lap and shown her interest, but why ruin a good moment by thinking about it? Kia seemed like one of those women that, if you didn’t take the chance when you had it, you’d spend the rest of your days wondering what could have been.

He’d already spent too long wondering that same thing about Caprice. The what-ifs had nearly driven him insane, but mostly drove him into a depression so deep that he thought he’d never climb out. But he did climb out. He had to avenge Caprice. He had to avenge her family.

That was tomorrow, though.

Tonight, he needed something else to focus on.

Yeah, I know what you’re lookin’ for Kia.” he said. “You want to get out of here?

He put down his glass, scooted back his chair and stood. He offered the woman his hand.

Let’s see if we can’t find what we’re looking for.” Brennan asked.

Each word, caress and glance was a well calculated attempt on the Black Widow's part to lure this Prince into her bed, and perhaps her life. He was passing all of the tests she laid before him in the Tavern. There were dozens more that she had derived for the purpose of validating if he was the right choice for her next experiment.

There were Black Widows replicating her work back in her newly shielded safe house. She'd trained a few girls to lure new Pawns away from safety and into their lair. She'd trained them to prepare each Pawn for the webs that she would later lay in their minds, but she needed them supple and open to her touch. Opium, combined with attention from a beautiful woman, had proven to be successful for her apprentices. Saskia had always relied on her own natural charm and ability to lure them back to the lair, but she dared not take any chances. And had no desire to risk her apprentices, as they were unique women who now shared Saskia's vision with a beautiful zealoutness that she had not anticipated.

Brennan accepted the blatant offering and the slow satisfied smile that curved Saskia's lips held promise.

"I'm certain you can help me find exactly what I'm looking for, Brennan." Saskia placed her hand in his and stood with a rustle of soft fabric. Eyes followed them as they walked from the tavern and she sensed more than one man was envious of Brennan's success. And several others were assessing what it might have cost him to walk away with this particular woman.

"I know a place not that far away." It was a boarding house that was connected through several tunnels beneath the city, which had once been the city's streets, to the lair she had lovingly established after her previous one had been compromised. Saskia didn't often visit the boarding house but she knew several rooms were kept vacant for her organization, thanks to a liberal application of cash and compulsion. "Do you think you can wait until then?" Saskia whispered, leaning towards him with a wicked gleam in her eye.

They walked together, hand in hand, and the sensation left Brennan momentarily speechless. He and Caprice used to walk hand-in-hand by the water, talking about their dreams and hopes for the future. Back then, Brennan Devlin still had hopes for the future that included his family, if only peripherally. He and Brogan would never be best friends, nor truly brothers, but there was a time when he thought they might be able to stand in the same room and just ignore each other instead of actively wishing death upon each other.

That hope died long ago.

Now, the hope that kindled in his breast was of a different kind. A hope that Caprice, even after the death of most of her Clan, would probably beg Brennan to let go of so that they could be happy.

Brennan hoped to Mother Night and the Darkness that he could burn Loreniel Killian’s Court, her life, and her whole world to ashes. He wanted to see her broken of her jewels, see her name stricken from Scelt’s history and have her clan declared anathema. Only when a new Queen, a better Queen, ruled Scelt, would there ever be a chance at making the territory the best it could be.

And when that was done, then Brennan could live out the rest of his days knowing that he’d avenged his wife and her clan. Then maybe he could live the rest of his life without feeling like he’d failed her completely.

Kia was talking to him and Brennan nodded to the question, about whether or not he could wait to get to the place nearby that she knew. He nodded, more confidently this time, and flashed her a cheeky grin.

Don’t worry, Kia. I know it’ll be worth the wait.” Brennan said, placing his hand on her lower back. He escorted her through the streets and made sure to give anyone who looked at them a good reason to put their attention elsewhere or face consequences. Thankfully, no one decided to start anything. Brennan was almost sad about it, but the thought passed.

Soon, he’d have all night to vent his pent-up frustrations and aggression.

The exuberance of success and satisfaction lingered on the edges of Saskia’s consciousness as she guided Brennan through the streets of Tuathal to the boarding house. The evening was going exactly to the plan she had concocted. There were several more steps before she would declare the entire enterprise a success but Saskia sensed it would be a matter of time before Brennan Devlin would succumb to her charms and buy into her organization, the Lace Initiative.

Saskia noticed that he had been momentarily lost in his own thoughts but she didn’t sense that he was second guessing his decision to join her. There were other demons and ghosts tormenting him but she could help with those later.

The touch of his hand to her back was disturbingly arousing. Few men acted with such chivalry while escorting a bed partner to a seedy boarding house for an evening of debauchery. Saskia ought to know, considering how many Pawns she’d trapped with similar tactics to those employed that evening. On more than one occasion the heavy petting had begun while they were still in crowded public streets.

The boarding house wasn’t too far away and Saskia was quick to insert a key into the aged and warped door before ushering Brennan inside. The door closed behind them and she raised a small witch light to guide their way. The light led them towards the back of the house, on the street level, and she put a second key into the next door. It creaked loudly as it opened and Saskia nearly dragged him into the room before shutting it and locking it soundly. She rested against the door and drew Brennan towards her with a meaningful look in her green eyes. “One last chance to back out.” She offered him with a sultry glance.

Hundreds of thoughts tried to bore their way into Brennan’s consciousness right now, but lust managed to hold them at bay while he readied himself to enjoy a night of carnal pleasures with Kia. Even the part of his heart that belonged to Caprice tried to pull him back, take him by the ear and guide him home, rather than to the bed of a complete stranger on a night like this. But then he could have stayed in the tavern all night, drank himself stupid, and gotten robbed on the way home. Or worse yet, laid on his bed and cried himself to sleep when the booze made him miss Caprice too much.

No, he didn’t want that.

He wanted Kia to make good on her promises.

They arrived at the boarding house, aged and in need of some attention, but still serviceable. He wanted to tell Kia that this part of town wasn’t really safe, but it wasn’t really his place. She lead him inside and he followed, the door closing behind them. It was dark in here, dark enough to need witch light as they made their way to the back of the house. They headed around back and Brennan got the feeling she was sneaking him in. He wasn’t insulted; in fact, it brought a smile to his face that she probably wouldn’t see.

She opened the door, pulled him inside, and locked it quickly.

Then she offered him an out.

Brennan closed the distance between them and pulled Kia into a deep kiss, his hands finally roaming over the places on her body that he only imagined beneath that cloak.

No, Kia. No one leaves tonight.” he said.

He lifted her off the floor and carried her to the bed.

The patience that Brennan had displayed while she’d led him through the seedier part of Tuathal was impressive, Saskia observed. When she had lured pawns in the past to their demise she often found there were two types of men in the capital of Scelt. Either they wanted to protect her and warn her about the dangers of inviting strangers home, or the dangers of the neighborhood she lived in - or they were depraved and could barely keep their pants on or their hands to themselves before they could even reach her front door.

Given that Saskia needed them actually in the boarding house before she could begin weaving her webs, for everyone’s safety, the latter were the more difficult to handle.

Brennan appeared to be a rare third kind of man - patient and not condescending. He’d neither warned her about the neighborhood nor tried to undress her in public. Those were further points in his favor and something she would consider if he proved responsive to her invitation into the Lace Initiative.

Assuming he made it that far and survived that long.

The kiss and touches were far more enticing that Saskia had anticipated. Men liked to paw at their own pace and strength, certain in their prowess and skills to pleasure a lady. Some men could be taught but very few took subtle directions.

The kiss was powerfully intoxicating and awakened the Black Widow within her soul. The webs, designed to hide that caste from the world, held despite the flare of passion that echoed throughout every facet of her caste, like thunder in a valley.

A girlish laugh of pleasure escaped her lips as he lifted her and carried her across to the bed. It had been ages since she had been swept off her feet. The bed was rarely a man’s first stop in her experience either.

Once he’d placed her on the counterpane she leaned up on her elbows to gaze at him with heavy eyes. For a moment she seemed to lose track of her purpose and merely appreciated Brennan for who he was, rather than what he could do for him.

“I think you’re overdressed, Brennan.” She purred, moving to her knees and reaching for the top button of his shirt. With a slowness meant to provoke him into action she undid the buttons while kissing the line of his throat that she was slowly exposing with soft, feathery breaths.

Kia’s response to his kiss made him smile. She giggled now, but she’d be screaming soon. He had all night to draw out those screams and those other little sounds of pleasure that would make the both remember tonight long after all of the marks on their bodies faded. Destroying Loreniel Killian’s life, her Court, and all of her weakling followers was the new focus of his life, the goal that he’d devote himself to until it succeeded or he was dead. All of that, however, would come tomorrow.

Tonight he’d have some fun.

Oh, well we can’t let all of these clothes get in the way, can we?” Brenna said, taking over the undoing of the buttons. He could have vanished his clothing all together in a single move, but she’d made him wait at the bar plus the entire walk to this place. He’d played the gentleman and not given in to the desires that had prodded at him since he laid eyes on her. But he was about to get everything he wanted. There was no need to rush or throw her down and mount her like he’d just walked into a Red Moon house.

His shirt unbuttoned, Brennan tossed it aside and caught Kia’s lips in another hungry kiss. She’d done well to hide her caste, but Brennan’s hunger was just as fierce, just as demanding as her own. He got rid of the cloak, followed by her top and her bra, wanting to feel her skin against his. She was warm, and soft, and real, and his cock strained inside his pants. Brennan’s right hand grasped a handful of Kia’s fiery hair and pulled, drawing her up so that he could look at her face.

His left hand slipped inside of her skirt and sought her sex, teasing those slick depths in preparation for burying himself within her and making the world go away.

The anticipation was a heady rush for the Black Widow. The last time she had taken a lover had been with the pure intentions of destroying the mind with one of the Lace Initiatives experiments. This was the first time in an age where she felt that it was not necessary to act the role of a true black widow and devour her mate to achieve the release she desperately needed. This time she felt like she could take her time and savour every kiss, every touch and every sigh that they made.

Brennan was paying her teasing back in kind. There was no rushing the man even though his desire was obvious to Saskia. Between the heady scent of lust and the hint of his reaction through his pants, no doubt was left that he wanted Saskia.

Or rather – he wanted Kia, the woman he’d met at the tavern.

Men never wanted Saskia for more than a night; for more than an opportunity to brag that they had slept with a dangerous Black Widow and lived to tell the tale. The fact of life that she had learned many years ago was that Sceltic men saw Black Widows as nothing more than dangerous bed sport, and never meant to be the type of woman you married or brought home to your family.

Saskia gasped with delight as he pulled her head up and she found herself gazing into his blue eyes. The lust that coursed through her veins was reflected well in those eyes and she knew it wouldn’t be long now. As she gazed into his eyes, urging him onwards, his hand found her core and the teasing fingers elicited the most sated of sighs from her. Her eyelids fluttered closed as he teased an even greater reaction from her body, and she seemed lost in the moment.

“Still too many clothes.” She murmured after a satisfied moan tore from her throat. With languid fingers she brushed the bulge in his trousers as she reached for the buttons to free him, and her desires. “These need to come off.” She told him and tugged at the waist band. “Now.” The word was spoken as a command and a satisfied smile crossed her face, her eyes never once leaving his.

While playing games with Kia was fun, and Brennan liked it, her moans tore slivers out of his self-control, leaving it in tatters before him. She commanded him and he half-growled, half-moaned in response to the fire in Brennan saw in her eyes, reflected in his. He vanished his pants, now naked before her. His fingers teased her just a little bit longer and then Brennan withdrew them and licked them clean, murmuring at the taste of her left on his tongue.

No, that’s not gonna be enough for me.

He threw her down on the bed, spread her legs, and then knelt between them. His mouth closed on her nether lips without warning. Brennan’s eyes rolled back as pure, unvarnished pleasure rolled through him while his tongue laved Kia’s core and he stained himself with her desire. The Opal Prince was skilled, but it didn’t stop him from using Seduction Craft to determine just which flickering of his tongue she loved most, to seek out her breast with his right hand and massage it, teasing her nipples. He turned each of those sensations upon itself, increasing her pleasure twofold. Every scream, every sigh, every roll of her hips against him in turn doubled Brennan’s pleasure and he continued until she climaxed for him or demanded that he stop.

Brennan wasn’t done though. He let images of all the ways he’d fuck flow through her while his tongue massaged her pearl. He was enamored of the idea where he bent her over something, anything, everything , and pumped himself into her from behind. The idea of dominating her that way appealed to him more than anything else, but he was going to enjoy Kia no matter how long it took this evening.

He let the heat between them burn away any thought that didn’t include pleasing beyond measure.

Ever since she’d had her Virgin Night she’d always taken completely control of her sexual encounters. It started with seduction and ended with a deep satisfaction of release, but every step between she had precise and clear control of the situation and the man.

As Saskia was thrown to her back she had a distinct impression that she was not in control of this man. As his mouth began to torment her in the most wondrous of ways she moaned her pleasure and let go of the desperate need for control. Her eagerness would have had him on the bed beneath her writhing form in moments, but his attentiveness to her own pleasure was rare and powerfully delightful.

“Brennan!” Saskia gasped, pressing her hips down into the bed and clinging to the already mussed sheets. The man’s tongue and touch were overwhelming her senses and she felt herself peak on a wave of pleasure that he masterfully delivered with contagious enthusiasm. The most powerful climax she’d had since she had left Little Terreille tore through her veins and stole the breath from her in a loud and stuttered gasp.

Her limbs felt heavy as she sank back to the bed once the pleasure abated and she had a silly smile upon her face as she glanced at Brennan. It was another few moments before she had the energy to sit up and reach for him. “What a clever tongue you have.” She told him saucily before kissing him with a casual, but charged promise. “Which means we’re well paired since I know my tongue to be equally clever.”

Saskia trailed her tongue down his chest, across his abdomen, and teased kisses with a deliberate slowness before she pressed her soft lips to the engorged tip of his cock. With a promise in her eyes and a wicked smile she began to lavish attention upon him, wanting to deliver the same earth shattering experience he had just given her.

Prove it.” Brennan said, half-growling the dare in response to Kia’s boast that her tongue was equally clever to his. He’d loved hearing her scream his name. Now he wanted to feel her mouth around his cock, bringing him to the edge before he finally took what he’d wanted from Kia since the moment he saw her. He didn’t care that they just met. He didn’t give a damn that he’d probably never see her again after this. All Brennan cared about was purging his pain in the only way he knew how, the only way that didn’t make him hate himself afterward.

Prove it.” he repeated, as she kissed her way down his stomach.

Kia did.

He laid back on the bed, feeling his cock slip deeper into her mouth, hitting the back of her throat. She was better than all of the women in Dhemlan, better than the stupid bitches here in Scelt, the ones who’d wanted him solely because of his last name and his connection to the family. Better than all of them combined.

She was better than Caprice, though it would be later in the following day before Brennan admitted that, even to himself.

Fingers tangled in her red hair, urging her own with hands and groans, demandign that she work harder for him, that she bring him as far as she dared. When he nearly went over the edge, Brennan stopped her, showing her what he wanted next. He wanted to pin her down and fuck her as hard as he could, wanted to feel her legs around his waist while she urged him on. If she stopped, he’d lay her down on the bed, looking into her eyes and favoring her with his hungriest smile.

His cock pushed into the folds of her sex, inch by torturous inch, until he was buried inside of her. Brennan waited until he felt Kia’s nails dig into his shoulder blades. He plunged himself into her core, claiming her as his own.

For tonight, at least.

The night was something of a blur; a wondrous, ardent and passionate blur. He’d left marks across her body that she would delight in come morning, and she’d freely clawed his body with ecstasy and wicked delight. The shielded snake tooth was safe from doing any damage to his magnificent body, whether he was aware of its proximity or not. They had been a brilliantly matched pair in bed, driven by desire and not weighed down by thought or indecision. It was liberating and beautiful all at once.

Saskia had been insatiable throughout the night. She’d even gone so far as to tease him awake in the early hours of the morning to have her wicked way with him again. If their night was an indication of what she could anticipate if her plan went well then she would be in for something unexpectedly special. Though her heart was carefully locked away she toyed with the idea of taking a long term lover, rather than just the one night stands she had become accustomed to. This would be the first man that she would let close to her since that fateful month when she’d returned to Scelt from Little Terreille and had her heart summarily broken.

The sky would be turning from black to deep blue in the coming hour, Saskia knew despite the lack of window. Her limbs were comfortable tangled with those of Brennan Devlin while he slept, and she was left considering what her next step would be to coax him into the Lace Initiative.

Saskia considered ‘accidentally’ letting him discover the truth about her caste, but the falseness of that revelation didn’t sit well with the Black Widow. There were already so many falsities in her life that she could not bear adding to the growing list. She debated letting him leave and to try and arrange another affair with him later, but she was admittedly impatient and not willing to separate from him just yet.

“Brennan?” She asked as she placed her soft lips to his neck, teasing him awake once more. “I have a confession.” Saskia determined that she’d take the risky tactic of telling him who she really was and why she hid her caste. She had a sense that he might see her as a kindred spirit and that, she decided, was the tactical approach she would take with the Prince.

Brennan couldn’t remember the last time he’d been with a woman like Kia. She was fun, great in bed, and she left marks that Brennan couldn’t wait to take stock of when he had the time later. Their coupling was furious and long-lasting, enough to make Brennan wonder if there was a man at home who wasn’t doing his job. As far as Brennan knew, this was only a one-night occurrence. His dreams, however, painted a world where Kia woke him regularly with that wicked mouth of his, bringing him to climax over and over.

The sensation of that mouth wrapped around his cock left him unable to distinguish his dreams from reality until he climaxed again and fell asleep once more. Further dreams showed him a life where he and Kia found a nice home, lots of babies, and a life where he didn’t hate the idea of family. In his dreams, his family loved him and honored him, never choosing his siblings over him just to hurt him.

Heart racing, his eyes opened to find Kia kissing his throat. Brennan pulled her closer to him, his hand resting on the curve of her ass while he stared up at the ceiling. He had so much to do. Loreniel Killian’s life had to be ruined. Brogan needed to be broken of both his jewels and left to live his life in pain and suffering until he killed himself or died of natural causes. He took a deep breath and exhaled the growing rage that rested near his heart whenever he thought about the Territory Queen and his stooge of a brother.

Yeah, Kia. What’s up?

I have a confession.
