Personality

Personality:

In his youth, Saladin yearned for adventure, and something of that fire still exists in him, though is has been tempered by experience and the loss of some finger joints.  Born a Prince to his Clan, he disliked the idea that others had a hand in selecting the path of his life.  He could not deny his nature, even then he preferred organization to chaos, a plan of attack, rather than fiercely flailing.  However, there was something in him that drove him to break free of the traditions of his Tribe, and sent him out into the desert seeking the excitement that a young man sometimes craved, regardless of their Caste or their upbringing.  He found it.

Saladin has lived the adventure he sought, paid the price for his travels, and returned to his Clan with his thrill-seeking nature somewhat tempered.  He will live a longer life than most, and has in some cases, and a life lived away from the usual routine of the Clan has granted him new perspective and new wisdom.  He has walked a mile in the shoes of another people, and came away wiser and better for it.  He sacrificed more than fingers, but lost a woman he loved as well.  Thus, with his soul tempered, and his heart wounded, he feels he is in a much better place to be of service to his Clan.  Old voices were just that, and he remains repared to provide a new voice, and perhaps help bring his Clan into the future.

He has loved deeply and well, and carries that loss with him.  However, as his beloved was a Sandrider, as he had been, she died living the life she loved, and he was beside her.  Saladin is friendly and open, some would say he was too trusting, but that is not it.  He prefers extending a welcoming hand rather than suspicion, give him a reason to distrust, or a reason to be your enemy, and he will seek to deconstruct that enemy with all the care that his Caste and Craft can muster.  Despite his adventurous demeanor, Saladin is not swift to make judgments or decisions, and like riding a Sandworm, will wait to learn all he can before taking the first step on any decision or battlefield.

Likes:
  • 1  Sandworms;  He loves riding them, even though he knows he never will again with his partner lost to him.  He can tell stories about them for hours, and has a deep respect for the creatures and The Madrasa, and the people that call it home.  They are Pruul, in a very real way to him.
  • 2  Pruul;  It is a harsh territory, a difficult place to live, but once you learn its secrets, no place holds more wonder or beauty.  Anything else is too easy.  A forest full of rivers?  A green hillside awash in foliage?  How can one appreciate such things if one has them all the time, but a sunset over an oasis in Pruul?  Nothing matches it.
  • 3  People; Pruul has proven to be a place where so many different kinds of people have come to make a life for themselves.  He, himself, is proof of that, having his blood mixed means he will live a lot longer than most of Pruul, and rather than lament that, he embraces it.  He will learn and grow, and keep the memory of those people alive for as long as he is.
Dislikes:
  • 1  Slavers;  It does not matter the Clan, Tribe or Territory.  Saladin has no patience for anyone that profits off of the suffering of others, or for those the steal the freedoms of people born to it.  Landen or Blood, they were meant to work together, not be enslaved by each other.
  • 2  Selfishness;  Pruul has much to offer if one knows where to look, and if one does, that knowledge should be shared with others.  The Clans and Tribes only work if everyone agrees they are in this life together, and support each other.  Someone willing to screw a fellow over for a profit is not someone Saladin will ever care for.
  • 3  Fanaticism;  Show Saladin someone who is sure that their way is best, and Saladin will only see a dangerous fool.  Survival and riding Sandworms relies on being able to adapt and change to a rapidly changing environment and world.  Now that the Rains have come, everyone should be prepared to change and look at new ways of doing things, not clinging to paths that led to ruin or did not work.
Fears:
  • 1  Loving and Losing, again;  He believes that he has recovered from his Wife’s death, but that is not entirely true.  While he accepts her loss as part and parcel of being part of a Sandrider pair, it is still an ache.  As such, while he will happily bring a woman to his bed, or be taken to bed, he unconsciously tries not to develop too deep a connection with anyone.
  • 2  Failing the Tabur;  Saladin has become the Voice of his Clan, which was not something he had sought or believed would happen, but after that terrible day of violence, he was chosen.  He worries that he will somehow fail them, rather than leading them to prosperity, he will help lead them to ruin.  He believes in his choices, and supports the Queen, but worries that the Mineborn may be too much for the traditions of Pruul to handle.
  • 3  The Rise of the True Sabbah;  Saladin has been away, but one of the reasons he went deep into the desert was because of the Sabbah, and the stranglehold they had on Pruul.  With the end of The Spider, it is a chance to set things right, but he was disappointed to find that there are lingering elements of that old Clan, and in Pruul in general, that preferred that tyranny.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1  Exploit Weakness;  Study and preparedness are part of a Sandrider.  This is not only useful in riding the great worms, but in other places.  He can sense the weakness of armor, of a structure, and very occasionally, of an argument or problem.  In battle, absent of the opportunity to study the enemy for something deeper, it is a flash of insight, of knowledge about where one’s guard, or one’s weapon or shields are weak.  It allows him to make a swift and efficient end to a target.  In other moments, it is the study of strategy, a weakness in troop deployment,  or of architecture or of a person’s character.
  • 2  Efficiency;  Saladin left his own Clan early, shortly after his trials, he was beginning to touch on this, but at The Madrasa, he learned how to apply to the summoning and riding of sandworms, in combat and for personal exercise, which all applied to his ultimate goal of completing his training as a Sandrider.  Currently, it allows him to get to the heart of the matter.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1  Power Bolts;  Expressions of external Craft are ineffective against sandworms, and downright deadly in parts of Pruul.  Much of what Saladin has learned to do is internalized.  Enhancement of his senses or himself, and rarely would he have thrown this kind of raw Worm-attracting Power out into the desert.  It would make of him lunch for sandworms.  Even in a fight, better to keep things simple and internal.
  • 2  Sight Shields;  This is the sort of Craft that can get one killed in the deep deserts of Pruul.  If Saladin is stealthy, it is by skill alone.  User of this falls apart quickly for him, likely due to an early bad experience that nearly got him killed.  A Sandworm just missing you can have that effect.  As with other elements, Saladin will rely on personal skill, or internalized Craft where possible.

History:

Saladin al-Tabur was born to a mixed blood family.  His Father was a long-lived Warlord that had left another Territory far behind him, and had chosen to live in Pruul.  He met and fell in love with a native Pruulian, and they had two children, one of which was Saladin.  A Prince in the Family gave them a bit of Prestige, and Saladin was offered up to the right people for the appropriate training, perhaps to one day be married into one the the Tribes that follow the Tabur, or even to serve in a Queen’s Court if they were lucky.  Saladin, he did not know any better at first, was content to do as his parents wished.  He went to his lessons, attended his training, and worked hard.  Life in Pruul is not easy, but if anyone had a normal childhood, Saladin felt sure that it was him.

When he claimed his Birthright, it was Darker than both of his parents, and opened the door to still more advancement of his Family.  However, it was around this time that Saladin began to have other ideas.  He began to feel stifled by the plans laid out for him, and the suppositions surrounding what he would do with his future.  Saladin eventually achieved his Descent, and his strong Opal was celebrated by his Parents and the Clan.  Once again, he felt like he was being funneled by other people’s expectations and choices, and this was the truth he divulged at the end of his Trials.  He knew that he had a long life in which to serve the Clan, but first, he felt as though he needed to at least take a bit of time to serve himself.  One argument with his Father later, he was heading into the deep desert to find the Sandriders, or an adventure, whichever found him first.  He left behind his Clan, his Parents, and a little sister.

Saladin found adventure, Madrasa, and the Sandriders and more.  He entered into the various trials and obstacles he needed to overcome to be accepted by the Sandriders, and while doing so, he met and fell in love with his Wife.  Her name was Scheherazade, he called her Hera, for short.  She did nothing but mock him at first, especially about his ignorance.  He had thought he knew how to survive in the deep desert, she laughed at him, and showed him how wrong he was.  That was the start of it all.  In time, when they both entered the training, they became a Sandriding pair.  Together, they rode their first worm.  They were together for years, training, and riding the Sandworms forging a sort of bond that went beyond words.  It seemed to Saladin the moved, they fought, they breathed as one.  He thought that he might live that life forever.

In time, they decided to have children together.  Ultimately, they were together when Hera died.  It was a sandworm that took her.  She died as she lived, bravely, and for a time, Saladin’s heart was broken.  His children helped that wound to heal, but he decided that it was time to return to the Clan Tabur, and to his Family.  His sister would be grown, and his Mother would, sadly, be old.  It was the right time to return.  He brought his children with him, and was in time to bear witness to the tumultuous end of The Spider’s leadership.  He was there when the violence broke out, there to help many members of his Clan escape.  He was there when his Father, Voice of the Tabur, fell to Sabbah blades keeping his grandchildren safe, and Saladin was there to kill those men.  He continued his Father’s work, safeguard the Tabur, and speaking loudly on their behalf.

Whether it was his words or his deeds that pushed him forward, Saladin became the Voice of the Tabur.  He now stands with the Queen of the Tabur, and stands united with her.  It was only in leaving loss and returning to lose more that Saladin realized what he had left behind.  He had left with a young man’s lack of understanding, and returned with a Father’s wisdom.  He pledged his Water to his children and his Clan, promising that he would not leave again, until Mother Night Herself called him home.

Character in Play:

”Well, it is isn’t the Prince of the Dunes.”  A mocking voice called.

Saladin gestured for Miriam to take his children inside.  His son stood his ground though, wooden practice knife clutched in his hand.  He glanced at his Father, and Saladin gave a slight shake of his head.  He sent a thread to his boy, *Guard your Aunt and Sister.  It is your duty.*  The boy scowled, narrowed his eyes at the source of the call, and then turned to take up a position in the entry to the tent he shared with his Father and sister.  *Good.  Watch, but say nothing.”

The Opal Prince turned around to face the men that had called for him.  ”It’s another fine day, gentlemen.  Is there anything that the Voice of the Tabur can do for you?”

There was a knot of men there, five in all, one Tabur, the others from their various tribes.  Traditionalists, he expected, who had either been swayed by the empty words of the True Sabbah, or the emptier words of old people that could not handle change in the world.  ”They let a savage become Voice?  Truly, we have fallen low.”

Saladin observed them quietly for a moment, ”I was born of this Clan, and I returned to it when the people needed me.  I sense that all of you have been in your cups, why not share a bit of water with me, and be on your way.”

”Water with a savage?”

”Why do you call me this, I am Tabur--”

”You are a savage and a liar.  You claim to have lived all these years with the Sandriders, savages out of the deep desert that offer the Clans nothing.”

Saladin tilted his head slightly, ”Brother, I would ask that you mind your tone.  My Wife, mother of my children was one of the people of Madrasa.  What we know of Pruul is because of her people--”

”I am no Brother to savages.”

Now the Opal Prince moved with speed and grace, and drove a punch hard into the other man’s solar plexus.  He collapsed, the wind drive from his lungs, and Saladin sensed a satisfying wave of surprise and fear wash over the rest.  He had seen that they would collapse when their loudmouth leader did.  ”My Wife has given me children.  They will grow to be Tabur.  Their grandfather gave his life for them, and for you ungrateful curs.  You will respect the Voice of the Tabur, or I will call each one of you out, and have your Water for my family.”
