Nicknames: Omi, Prince Dreamer
Age and Birth Year:  21 (171 AP)
Race:  ½ Long Lived (Dhemlani/Shaladorian)
Caste:  Prince
Birth Territory: Pruul
Home Territory: Pruul

Birthright Jewel:  uncut Opal
Offering Jewel:  cut Red

Role:
Faction: Clan Bali

Appearance

Play By: Tyler Posey
Distinguishing Features:

Omid has the straight black hair and tanned skin of his Dhemlani parentage. His eyes, however, retain a hint of the green of his Shaladorian ancestry. He has high cheekbones and cuts a handsome figure when dressed well. He's allowed himself to grow a bit more stubble to give weight to his years, rather than the baby-faced freshness of his youth.

Personality

Despite the hardships he’s experienced, Omid is still a thoughtful, kind, and well-spoken young man. His height is imposing, yet he never seems to look down on anyone even when he’s physically looking down at them. The time of his voice is naturally soft and light, lending to his excellent singing voice. Omid always has a kind word for his siblings or anyone else he speaks with. His natural demeanor, however, is best described as reserved. He does not speak out of turn and attempts to always lend his voice to a matter when it is most required. Many times, he is often drowned out by Lucky’s forceful personality or the more self-assured tones of Zahira. Omid knows this must change if he is to guide his siblings down the right path, but Omid struggles constantly with the thoughts and feelings that run through his mind. He seeks always to do the right thing, the greatest good, and seeks various viewpoints in order to inform his decisions.

This reserved mindset, coupled with his desire not to speak ill of others, drives Omid to the sanctuary of libraries where old scrolls, tomes, and books await to  give him deeper insight to the past. Learning about the world around him is Omid’s meat and drink, serving as a light that pushes back against the darkness of the mines. That darkness is written upon his soul, but Omid uses learning, music, his love for Cadence and his siblings to lessen its impact.

Omid is known to daydream, his mind always chewing over some new fact that he's learned or trying to puzzle out the lyrics to a song he's writing. His attention some times comes across as selective, but it's only because he's trying to finish one thought before moving on to the next. He doesn't always succeed, but the point is that he tries.

Omid’s anger is difficult to summon, but the surest way to find it is to attack a woman in his presence. He still remembers Cadence’s assault in the mines during his youth. He was unable to save her then and that guilt and shame drives him to protect the women in his life.

Personality:

Likes:

  • 1. The Moon: Omid believes he knew just how the moon looked long before he ever saw it. Even now, released from the mines, Omid can be found sitting atop a high building and staring up at the sky just to catch a glimpse. He secretly wishes he had Lucky’s wings so that he could fly and touch the moon, and maybe bring a piece of it home to show his siblings.

  • 2. Music: Whether it’s singing, playing, or writing it, Omid’s greatest love, aside from learning, is making music. Cadence sang him to sleep a thousand times during their years in the mines, but Omid believes that someone else sang to him in his youth, long before he even met the woman who protected him. Now that he’s free of the mines, Omid has found a love for Pruulian work songs, Chaillotian ballads, and Hayllian lyricism. His tamburo is always close at hand when the urge strikes to write another song.

  • 3. Learning: The salt mines of Pruul deprived Omid not just of light and freedom of the body, but it also chained his mind. Once he was free, he realized just how little he knew about the world compared to other males his age. Reading history books, studying music, and learning the intricacies of Caste and Craft are Omid’s favorite things to do when he isn’t with Cadence or his siblings.

    Dislikes:
  • 1. Males Attacking Women:  The memory of Cadence’s assault is never far from Omid’s mind, even years after the fact. He couldn’t protect her,  being young and without jewels, and the memory of her screams still wakes him in the dead of night.  It’s never occurred to him that this might have been worse if he’d been free to assist her. When a male harms a woman in his presence, Omid’s rarely seen rage may lead him to do grievous harm to the attacker if not stopped.

  • 2. Fighting: Knowledge of warcraft is a necessity of life but that doesn’t mean Omid has to like it. Combat is a sign of failure in Omid’s eyes, for it means that diplomacy and understanding has failed. He can fight and he will do so to defend Cadence and his siblings, but Omid will always counsel the extension of the open hand over the closed fist.

  • 3. Silence: Cadence didn’t speak for two weeks after she was attacked. Omid thought she’d never speak to him again, leading him to believe her attack was his fault. She eventually dispelled that notion from his mind, but silence has left its scars. Even more than darkness, Omid hates the sound of silence; it makes him feel alone. He’ll hum quietly or play his tamburo if necessary, whatever must be done to keep the silence at bay.

    Fears:
  • 1. Loss of the Mineborn: Bound as they are through their suffering, prophecy, and their shared captivity, Omid would be lost without his “siblings”. He fears for each of them for different reasons. Yet he’s aware that the tribes of Pruul are more numerous and have existed longer than all of them combined. Omid lives in fear of the day that the other tribes choose to stop suffering the Mineborn’s existence and rise to wipe them out. They would be slain without difficulty and Omid knows that no amount of Protocol would stop them.

  • 2. Losing Cadence: The Mineborn are the reason Omid came to the surface; Cadence is the reason Omid survived the dark. He refused to leave the mines without her. She called him her light in the darkness when he was little. He knows only that getting along in the world without her would be harder and she is the one person outside of the Mineborn who truly understands all that he’s been through. Without her, Omid feels alone, even among his siblings.

  • 3. His Parentage: Omid does not fear his parents finding him. If they wanted to do that, they had ample time. What worries him is the kind of people they were. Criminals and worse monsters were sentenced to the mines; from those people, the Mineborn were sired. What did his parents do to end up there? Were they Jeweled Blood or Jewel-less? Were they truly guilty or innocent? What parts of himself did he gain from them?

Omid thinks he wants to know, yet this is the one facet of knowledge he’s been slow to pursue.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Efficiency: Omid can distill a massive amount of information down to salient points needed to master a task. When he left the mines, Omid had spent several years without his Jewels and with only basic Craft available to him. Now that he is in the Overland, this Craft has helped him not only retain a vast amount of historical knowledge on Pruul and Terreille, but also aiding in him closing the gap in terms of Craft and combat knowledge with those of his age and strength.

  • 2. Witchlight: When he was a boy, Cadence named him Omid, which meant hope. He is her light in the darkness, the light that others follow when they lose their path. Internalizing that mission, Omid's personal light is nothing less than blinding, allowing him to illuminate a large room without concentration or outline his body in an aura of that drives back shadow in all directions.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Seduction Craft: Omid does not dislike sex, but it is not among his primary thoughts. Seduction Craft is a form of manipulation and Omid prefers, if he intends to be intimate with a man or woman, to know that he earned their affection on his own merits instead of coercing it with Craft.

  • 2. Aural Shielding: Omid is aware that this Craft is useful, but the first few times he attempted it, all he managed to do was deafen himself for three hours. The ensuing silence made Omid feel separated from the world around him, able to see but not hear or speak. He shuns this craft for fear of permanently silencing himself and becoming little more than an afterthought to his siblings and the rest of the world.

    Life Story

    Family:
    Mother: Unknown
    Father: Unknown

Guardian: Cadence Fellows Broken Purple Dusk to Broken Green Healer

Siblings: The Mineborn are his siblings. That is all he needs to know.

    History:

He was born a sickly child inside the Geiba salt mines of Pruul. He does not know his parents; rumor has it that they died shortly after his birth, but few things about the mines can be confirmed anymore. In any event, the child did not remain with his birth parents long after his birth. Due to his ill health, he was placed in the hands of a Healer, Cadence Fellows, sentenced to the salt mines for the alleged murder of a child. Cadence was tasked with keeping the babe alive at the cost of her own life, for he was one the prophesied “Mineborn” that the Geiba believed central to returning Pruul to prominence. Even without the threat of death or the motivation of prophecy, the Healer cared for the boy as though she’d birthed him herself, seeing him as a second chance to atone for the wrongs that led her to the mines.

She named him Omid, meaning hope. Despite what the world and the mines had stripped away from her before she arrived in their dark depths, Cadence made a silent vow to little Omid that she would see him rise above his low beginnings and bring light those around him. The same light that he now brought to her.

He grew stronger, overcoming the illness that infected his body to become a playful, if somewhat docile, child. He was dutiful, obeying his “mother” without question and doing what he could minimize the attention drawn to them. Omid grew up listening to Cadence sing to pass the time. When he could speak, he lent his voice to hers and brought some relief to their fellow captives. She taught him letters, numbers, all of the things she knew, kindling a love of knowledge in the boy. When his Birthright Ceremony arrived, the eleven year-old Omid demanded (as though he had any power) that Cadence be allowed to join him. The guards relented, if only to keep the boy calm. Cadence herself expected a very light jewel for Omid, though she assuaged his fears that they’d remain together and that she would love him no matter what Jewel he was gifted with, and even if he wasn’t gifted one at all.

Omid received an Opal and, though it was taken from him immediately after, the young Prince’s life was never quite the same.

The years passed as Omid learned the tunnel paths and delivered messages between the overseers. At thirteen, Omid was tall and old enough to help the miners in their tasks. Each day, he returned to his cell with Cadence where they would talk about their day before he sang her to sleep. While his life was not perfect, Omid knew no other way to live and Cadence’s steady, calming presence made his life as close to idyllic as they could manage.

Their world was shattered by her Breaking.

Even as a man grown, Omid still hears her cries for help in his dreams. He doesn’t know why those guards chose her, especially after she’d done all they asked without complaint. He does know that they violated her and broke her Jewels. At some point, Cadence fell silent and the only screams Omid could hear were his own. As soon as he was free the following morning, he tended to his surrogate mother as best he could. She didn’t speak for three weeks and Omid recalls the silence as the darkest time of his life in the mines.

    She never sang again.

The fifteen year-old Prince finally understood the meaning of rage. And helplessness.

Omid knows now it that it was only two years later that they were freed from the mines, but to his mind, it felt like eternity. His primary concern was seeing to Cadence’s well-being, though he came to learn of the other children born in the mines. The rest of the Mineborn quickly became the siblings he’d always wanted. Unlike Lucky, he wasn’t bound to Ghanima, but he considered her his Queen all the same. Hadjara’s kindness and good-nature rivaled (Omid would say outshines) his own. Khadijah, wild and fierce, helps Omid remember that he cannot always remain so reserved. Zahira’s skills with healing remind him of Cadence and he regards the Healer with a deeper respect than most.

Lucky’s rage reminds Omid that, though they are free, a part of them will always be trapped inside the mines, in the dark, with nothing to protect them save their anger. Omid is increasingly uneasy around Roshan. He likes her and enjoys her presence, but sees her differently than his other sisters. He does not know why.

Omid has taken it as his task to keep his siblings’ spirits high and watch over each of them. There is so much that they do not know, so much that was kept from them along with their jewels. It is his duty to learn these things, to recall them on demand so that his siblings are not caught unaware or trapped by some obscure law or facet of Protocol. Music is his refuge, serving as a reminder of his youth when, despite the hardship, a little peace from life’s troubles could be had with a song.

    Character in Play:

The dusty old book was worth its weight in knowledge.

Lucky had laughed, told him he got cheated when he purchased the tome from the Dhemlanese traveler, but Omid refused to hear it. Now he sat inside the old library, using his Opal to keep the space around him lit while he perused the pictures inside. Years and years ago he’d asked his mother, Cadence, to tell him about healing people and how it made her feel. Each night, she told him about a different patient from her village. She explained how she determined their symptoms and their course of treatment. Omid drank in every word, imagined every moment, as though he’d sat with her while she worked. Now and again, he asked her to go into further detail and tell him what she felt during the times she worked her craft to help others.

The book read the way Cadence’s memories sounded.

No, brother. I wasn’t cheated at all.” Omid murmured to himself as the night wore on. He shifted in his seat, turning this way and that, as his eyes drew in the words, measured them, and internalized them. Each night, the Healing Craft fascinated him more and more. Each night, the questions on his mind drove him to seek the answers. His brothers and sisters required healing, the scars of the mines still marking all of them even after their freedom. Some of the scars were physical, like Cadence’s injuries. Other scars ran deeper, like Lucky’s desire to fight any and everyone he perceived as wronging him or the others.

Later in the night, he closed the book and rubbed his eyes. Fatigue weighed heavily on the Mineborn Prince, but sleep wasn’t a consideration. He couldn’t sleep while there was still so much to left to learn. He stood, stretched, and walked around the small room, seeking another way to stay awake.

His eyes settled upon his tamburo and his smile was nearly as bright as the craft that kept the room lit. Picking up the instrument, Omid sat down on the bed and plucked a string. It was a little out of tune, so he hummed softly to himself while he tuned it. Over and over he plucked, searching for the chord that matched the one in his mind’s ear, the one that would Cadence sing for him again. The chord that made Khadi, Ro, and Hadjara dance and got even Zia to relax just a little bit in her siblings presence. The chord that made even Lucky crack a smile, despite his attempts not to.

He plucked the strings again, remembering the night he’d caught Rania dancing when no one else was watching. He needed to find that chord, any chord, that would make her let her guard down the way she did when no one else was watching.

Perhaps someday, he’d even find the chord that would make Mother Night send the rains back to Pruul.
