As much as he wanted to say he was getting used to Gate City, he was not. Lionel felt ill at ease, even when he was outside. It was likely to do with the fact that he was, in fact, trapped here. The space was larger - bigger than any other prison he had had before - but it was still a place he was contained within.

Goosebumps would rise on his skin, the sensation of something crawling right underneath the surface coming a moment later, as he thought about it. He wanted out. Yet there was little to do aside from wait for Silver - hope that her and her crew would return - or wait and see what was in store for him.

There was no dark jewel to petition for him, no ties aside from the ones to the Unchained. This city, this entire place that reeked of disrepair and improper maintenance, was nothing more than another pen with even more keepers to watch him twitch and panic.

At least his fervor of hatred for this place was nearly enough to keep him distracted from the other thoughts that plagued his mind. He still caught himself freezing when he thought he saw Markus out of the corner of his eye. It was impossible, the man was back in Glacia, but the fear was irrational.

He kept to himself for the most part, not socializing at all save when others tried to impose their presence upon him, and was currently walking what was becoming a well worn path to him (perhaps that is how things would end; he would walk this path in the Gate City over and over again until it was a trench that he could never get out of and then, perhaps, he could simply stop).

Lionel raised his face to the sunlight, eyes closing briefly as he enjoy what warmth he could from the sun. Somewhere green would be nice, a field open and in bloom. Anything other than the cobbled streets of this internment camp would be welcomed.

Anything.

Aleksy held the contract in her hands. She could have vanished it. She really ought to vanish it, in case she dropped it. Same went for the pass that meant she was retrieving someone from Gate City for a Little Terreille Court. Her own contract had been technically signed with the Territory, she thought, but Lionel's contract would be signed with Little Vaasa and... and with Aleksy. It seemed that if she vanished the contract it would disappear and then they would both be trapped on the wrong side of the Gate City perimeter, so even though she knew it would be wise to vanish the contract she didn't. She held it tightly between shaking fingers.

A wiser choice for Sheyla and for Little Vaasa would have been a man who wasn't a recent torture victim. Her current Escort was a nice Glacian man with the Rose for his Descent Jewel, but he wasn't right for Aleksy. He didn't understand her and she didn't know how to tell him he didn't, how to communicate across that gap between Healer and Warlord. He needed a Healer who could say what she needed, and Aleksy needed a male who already knew. That it was impolitic hadn't occurred to her. Even if it had, Aleksy had decided that her decisions couldn't all be built around who was the best for Sheyla or Voda or anyone else; she had to make her own life, her own decisions and mistakes. And Little Vaasa, and Sanctuary, were both about second chances, and Lionel needed one.

She found him precisely where she had Seen herself finding him. He had his face tipped back to the sun, like a flower. They were of a height, she thought, and he looked so peaceful that that was all she thought for a long moment. She couldn't shatter the glass-world of this moment any more than she could lift off from the ground and fly. Nor could she simply stand here and watch him. What if it gave him a fright? Aleksy looked left, then right, along the crowded street. No one seemed to notice this odd paused moment, except for her.

Finally, she thrust the contract out towards him, the thick official paper crinkling in her hands. She could wait until he was ready, but her heart was too full to speak first.

It was a niggling sensation in the back of his mind, one that if he was not enjoying the sunlight he would have attached with being watched. Perhaps that was how he had been caught and found out by Niksala. He had been too busy enjoying the sunlight, trying to find a moment to breathe, that he let himself be seen and found.

Most seemed to ignore Lionel, not pay him any mind. Whispers would follow him, that the light in his eyes was dead and gone, that there was something not right about him, but he ignore them. Just as he tried to ignore the sensation of being watched until it started to crawl upon his skin and dig into him.

The crinkling of the paper, the sound of air rushing as it was thrust towards him, was ultimately what drew him from his reverie. It was only the fact that he was frozen in his spot that kept him from taking a step backwards, eyes briefly on the official looking document and not the-

A Healer.

No, more than a Healer, Lionel was sure of it. His hand raised from his side, a fine tremble going through it as he very nearly brushed his fingers across the paper before it dropped back to his side. Instead his eyes were searching the face of the Healer before him, studying her and ignoring the document between them.

Something clenched uncomfortably in his chest, though he could not say it was his heart. There were too many cracks in that for it to clench anymore.

"Are you-" he started, voice hoarse from lack of use, and he stopped to swallow and wet his lips before he tried again. "Are you here for me?"

Aleksy had seen just this: the tremble in his fingers, the depths of his dark eyes. It had been a dream, not a web, but something about this meeting hung dreamlike around her shoulders, muffling the sounds of the street around them. Are you here for me? Yes and no. She was here for Lionel, and he was here for her. It was fated, meant to be, the great machinations of the universe deigning to reveal themselves to Aleksy entire, the same way her footsteps had traced the path to Violet Kaos they had traced the path to Lionel Kelly, the Glacian with a Scelt name. She'd seen a lion, weak, his mane shorn away, and his claws cut back to the quick, tip they bled. Standing here on the streets of Gate City she saw it again, something leonine in his manner. Pride broken into pieces so small it fell between the tiny holes in the universe.

She didn't tell him that. Aleksy looked at him, meek and pleading, before she gathered herself together. "It's a contract," she said. "For Lord Lionel Kelly. That's you." She checked. Had the letters wriggled away like worms through the dirt? An errant curve would change the meaning. She had to take Lionel away from this place now, the webs said so. She looked at the paperwork: Upon signing this document, the Warlord Lionel Kelly will serve in the District Court at Little Vaasa for a period not shorter than two and one half years in the Second Circle as Escort to the High Healer of Little Vaasa, Aleksa Grey. A period not shorter than two and one half years. Aleksy had served in Little Vaasa for nearly seven months. Their contracts would end at the same time. They would stay together, could go anywhere.

"I'm Aleksa. Aleksy. Everyone calls me Aleksy. Except some people in the Court. They call me Lady Grey. I saw you, in a web? Because I'm a Black Widow Healer?" She didn't know if she was doing this right. She needed him to come away with her today, but what if she was frightening him? "I don't want to scare you," she said, "but I would really like it if you would sign a contract with me. We'll be much stronger together than we will be apart. I promise I'll never let anyone hurt you. And I know that Voda, he's the Master of the Guard, would never ever ever let anything happen to any of us. You'll be safe, and happy. Please?"

There was an abyss in her eyes, Lionel thought. It was not the Abyss, nor the darkness that ate his thoughts and made him twist and tumble and fall deeper until he was certain he was nothing but a small speck of dust waiting to be blown away. This was something that felt comforting, like the sunlight upon his skin that would warm him until a chill chased it away.

He looked to the paper again, hand raising and finger brushing against the lines and curves that made up his name. Lionel held his finger there almost as if he expected that his name would wiggle away. That it would disappear and another name would be there and this opportunity was nothing but-

His gaze raised up as she explained and things clicked into place. A Black Widow Healer that was High Healer of Little Vaasa. Lionel's throat constricted, mouth opening and words stuck there inside him. He closed his mouth and swallowed, chest tight still, as he was certain that this was a bad idea.

No matter how much part of him screamed inside that he wanted it.

Anything, he had thought, would be welcomed instead of this place but faced with an actual chance of freedom he froze. Everything seized up as he pulled his hand back from the contract and looked to her- to Aleksy.

"I- I don't think this is a good idea, Aleksy." Was that alright? Could he call her that? His hands did shake now, fingers curling over and under each other as he wrung them together. "I can't-" A breath was sucked in. "I'm not afraid of you," came out in a whisper, "I am afraid for you. If- if I am your Escort." She saw him in a web, did she not? That meant she had to see other things, to know what he had did, what he had caused.

This pained him because he wanted it but at the same time the idea of putting her in danger because of himself was unacceptable. Aleksy would be cherished by Lionel, it was simply the way he was made, but he could not see the happiness or the safety. All he could think of was the potential for things to go wrong.

Lionel called her Aleksy and the Black Widow Healer smiled encouragingly: yes, good, Aleksy, that was her, he knew her. Not like she knew him. He was only a male, not a Black Widow, the Darkness didn't bend to his whim as it did for her. It was like he lacked hands to part the veil between the present and the future. That was alright. Aleksy could be his hands, the same way as she was Sheyla and Voda's hands, the same as she was for Violet. "I have Seen it," she said, urgency leaking into her words, "I know who you are and I want you to be my Escort. I'm not afraid of you."

She leaned in, like she was a child with a secret. Her wide green eyes met his and she said, "It's okay to be scared. I'm scared all the time. But I think together we won't have to be scared anymore. I know about the one who hurt you and I won't ever, ever let him raise a hand to you again." There was an odd, ponderous weight to her words. She tucked the contract against her chest and reached up to touch his face. Aleksy wanted to curl her fingers around the corners of his jaw, to make him look her in the eye. But his hand came up to catch her about the wrist, and her uncanny stare shifted targets to his long, delicate fingers around her slim wrist. Oh, she thought, of course.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm not very good at this, am I?" She let him hold her wrist, didn't pull away.

Maybe he wasn't sure that they could protect him. "Little Vaasa is a good place," she said, earnest, canting her face closer to his. "Sanctuary is a good place. There are no bodies in the garden, and all the ghosts are gone. It's new. It's a second chance for both of us. Please say you'll come, Lionel, please?"

There was panic in him. A panic that made him reach for her hand as her fingers moved for him. What if- what if- Lionel let out a breath, the sound of it hollow in his chest, and watched Aleksy. It was a war within him, a fight because she was here and she was not afraid and she had Seen and she Knew and-

"I don't want to be scared anymore," he admitted in a barely audible voice, not truly able to acknowledge that she was offering to keep him safe from Markus. Could she? Really? When the man existed in his head even though he tried to scrub him out of it? Nothing got rid of him.

His eyes had looked everywhere, not focusing on any one part of her - even the abyss of her eyes - because some part of him expected her to disappear. Nice things, good things, were few and far between and even then they left him. Aleksy was closer now, still trying and not letting him go (it was the other way around; he was not letting her go).

"I think you are good at this but I am not," he spoke as his grip shifted on her wrist. It was not a hard hold, it was a delicate one, Lionel holding to her gently, oh so gently, as if he was afraid of hurting her but there was strength in her. There had to be, if she was offering to protect him. To not be scared anymore with him. His hand shifted, loosening and moving until it was resting over Aleksy's.

A moment of trust, to let her move her hand as she had been about to do before he stopped her.

"You know-" The words came out slowly after a handful of heartbeats. "You See me and you still want me?" Another tremble went through him, Lionel holding himself together but leaning little by little closer to Aleksy. As much as the idea was terrifying, it was something he felt was needed. To do something that would let him reclaim some part of himself. Take back what had been stripped away from him.

"You would- help me find myself? Together?" With those words he properly met her eyes and while her stare was uncanny to some, to him - as it had briefly earlier - it brought a sense of comfort, a focus outside of himself.

Aleksy pressed her hand to his cheek, firm and gentle. There were people all around and some of them had stopped, but they seemed ephemeral, of no consequence. Little Vaasa might take a few of them into their Court, there were other positions which needed filling and who knew but some might be where Lionel was, a Glacian with lost papers and no one to speak for him. His friends would come looking for him too late. It had been some time already, hadn't it? There would be nothing left but bones.

"Yes," she said, an answer to all of his questions. She looked down at the papers and then set them against his chest. "You should sign these. Then I'll take you home. You'll really like Little Vaasa. It's green, and the sky is very blue, and Sanctuary is where my garden is. We help people, there. We are what the Blood should be, there. Not cruel. The butterflies have no teeth and are just what they are." Aleksy smiled at Lionel, the corners of her unblinking eyes crinkling up. She looked much younger than she was when she did that.

She let him lean into her, she took her free hand and placed it on the back of his neck, covering the raw red mark where a collar had once rested. They would collar her too if she was born in Glacia, but she wasn't. Here she was, in Gate City, with the ability to help others. Something in her thrilled at the realization that she could be of use. Once she'd dreaded the thought. Of Use to Demetrius Grey meant thrown over a table, bruises on her hips, screaming screaming screaming and everything hurting. Of Use to Violet and Lionel was different, though. It felt... warm.

Lionel was warm against her shoulder. "It won't ever be just like it was," she said. "But it will be better. We won't hurt so much and we won't be scared. And you like Healers, and I'm a very good Healer, and we'll be together." Aleksy paused for a moment, thoughtful, and then craned her neck to kiss Lionel's temple. "And we'll be safe. Sheyla's a good Queen. You'll see, Lionel. I promise you will."

Were there a world outside of the pair of them, Lionel did not seem to pay it any attention. He hadn't looked passed himself for a time, not since he had found himself here and not with Silver and the others. There was no point, nothing that existed outside of himself that was worth it.

Aleksy was worth it, of that he was certain.

His hand, the one that was not still near hers, came up to cover the papers that were pressed to his chest. They closed against the paper, wrinkling them. The noise was strangely loud to his ears, something that drowned out the heavy rush of blood. He wanted to smile but wasn't sure the muscles in his face remembered how or that it would break and the cracks would spread and he would fall to pieces.

That wouldn't do, not when Aleksy was here and speaking a language he could understand. One that spoke not just to him but his soul- the very core of his being. A tremor went through him as her fingers brushed against the mark his collar left. It was something that could've been healed, wasn't it? Yet he had left it, not let it be tended, and it had not truly healed. His fingers would find it every night, every moment that he wanted to sink.

Something different broke in him with the brush of Aleksy's lips against his temple. That simple affection snapped whatever resistance was left. The tremble that went through him not the same as the others that came before; it was relief because it had been so long since someone had touched him and he had not recoiled from it. Aleksy was welcomed, needed and he had never realized it. One hand still clutched the papers and the other, no longer hovering near Aleksy's hand, reached out and curled around her. Held to her as if she was a lifeline because she was, because she understood, because there was a kindred spirit in her that spoke to him and he knew it for what it was.

They could- No. They would be better together, could be was not an option. It had to be, it had to be.

"Okay," the tremble was not in his voice, "yes." That came out a bit stronger. "I- I'll sign them and come with you because I believe you. I will," a breath escaped, his face tilted towards her hair and hiding somewhat, "be your Escort and we'll be good together, Aleksy. I'll keep you strong." She would help him find his strength in the process.

Aleksy smiled, relieved, even though Lionel couldn't see it. She patted him gently between the shoulder blades, and when she finally pulled back it was a not-insignificant amount of time later, and it was only to have him sign the papers in triplicate. Once they had gone over the many sheets together, Aleksy squared her shoulders and put her hand over his. It felt silly to walk with him like this, but she knew it would become natural over time, that they had decades together to look forward to.

She gave the papers to the guard from the Territory Court that watched the gates, laced her fingers through Lionel's and clung. She did it right, she thought. Her pass was still good, she thought, she had been given that pass by Sheyla's Steward and she knew it was good. How long ought one guard examining one sheet of papers take?... Aleksy had time enough to worry before the man nodded approvingly and stamped each of the three copies, and handed her pass back to her, and two copies of the papers as well.

And that was all, that was the end of the journey, the pair of them were free to go. Lionel was free of Gate City. Aleksy gave one copy of the contract to Lionel. "You should vanish that so it can't be taken away," she murmured. The final copy, Aleksy vanished, and then remembering abruptly, she reached into her psychic cabinet for the small basket of breakfast goods she had acquired on her way out.

Lionel didn't like sweet things, but Aleksy did. She considered the pair of turnovers. One of them was a deep red, the other a lighter pink. She passed the still-steaming turnover and one of the ceramic closed cups of coffee to Lionel. "It's rhubarb," she said. Hers was cherry.

Together, in silence, they walked back to the Coach station, so he could come home with her.
