Appearance
Play By:  Mike Pishek
Distinguishing Features:

Other than the sort of looks that get one invited into many a Lady’s boudoir, Peregrine has wings.  They give away his ancestry, despite looks that might have otherwise blended in.  Without them, he would be considered terribly handsome, with wings he is exotic.  They extend, bat-like, from his back, and actually can allow him to fly.  When they are not in use, he has learned to fold them about himself, almost like a leathery cloak.

Personality

Personality:

Peregrine is a street kid.  None of his training or education came in any kind of formal way.  This is not to say that he did not have an education, but more that it was a bit disorganized, and sometimes based on the given interests of whomever was teaching him.  He learned Protocol in a Red Moon House, and more besides.  He doesn't advertise this, and while he is not ashamed of it, he would rather not have to defend it to anyone, verbally or physically.  Peregrine's views on the world are somewhat tinted by this perspective.  Survival was the key necessity to his life, and he has seen the depths people will sink to just to get by.  It makes him a bit rough around the edges when dealing with people that have not lived the rough life.  As the old saying goes, never try to con a con man, and that's what so much of Court politics is.  He's pretty enough, he knows, to get by on silence, and he often does.  He tends to listen, before he pokes holes in anything.

With a need to survive came a need to defend himself.  Peregrine learned early on that fighting and winning was going to be a necessity.  He never wanted to be the victim, and fought very hard, all of his life, to make sure that he was not.  Peregrine feels comfortable in physical conflict, the only thing that ever felt better to him was flying.  Blood and violence were very nearly as soothing, in the end, as a long flight.  It is not something he is necessarily proud of, but neither is he ashamed of it.  On the contrary, he was told to embrace it as his Fate and part of his Caste, and by and large he has.  Peregrine fights like someone that has nothing to lose, because most of his life, he did not.

Publicly, he's very friendly.  He has a ready smile good humor, and good looks.  He seems utterly confident, despite a lifetime of people hurling insults at him for his mixed blood.  He's very conscious of bigotry, but has learned to ignore, using unflinching certainty as his shield.  Having a history of losing things, his Mother, his income, his closest friend, Peregrine will fiercely protect what he sees as his, and this goes for people as well as possessions.  For a Warlord Prince, he's almost unusually gregarious, willing to talk with just about anyone that will treat him as an equal, or at least, not like a street urchin.  Self-disclosure, he learned long ago, is the best way to set up a long con.  His friendliness comes coupled with an eagerness to learn new things.  He does not like to put his own ignorance or limited experience on display, so he tries not to seem to eager, but anyone paying attention could see that he is a sponge when something new comes along.

Peregrine came from nothing.  He has owned nothing, so when presented with luxuries, he truly enjoys them.  He does not think that people who have had luxuries all of their lives ever really appreciate them.  Good food, good drink, beautiful women, a sunset from a mansion balcony, a swimming pool, a garden that covers acres and has a hedge maze.  All of these thigs are wonders he appreciates, and one day dreams of having on his own.

Likes:
  • 1  Children; an orphan himself, Peregrine has a soft spot for children of all ages, even troublesome teenagers.  He cannot stand by and watch a child suffer or be abused, and will move to help or put a stop to it.  Witnessing the callous treatment of children can also agitate his temper, and he might be moved to act in a violent and unreasonable fashion.  Better that he takes the licks, if he must, rather than a kid.
  • 2  Music; when on his own, away from the hustle of the streets, or the world of the brothels, Peregrine taught himself to play the guitar by ear, as well as the piano, and if coaxed, he might even do a little singing.  Music became a very personal retreat, a way to calm himself down after day of street fighting, or out putting in the work.  Occasionally, music as a balm will show itself in small ways, like humming a tune softly to himself, or the twitching of his fingers, as if he wanted to play in that moment, instead of lose his temper.
  • 3  Flight; Peregrine loves to fly.  Once he figured out how, it became very difficult for the adults in his life to keep his feet on the ground.  Not only does it grant him an escape from time to time, it gave him utility.  If something had to be done fast, delivered fast, or scouted fast, Peregrine was often the one to do it, and he reveled in it.  He was daring as well, flying between buildings where all sorts of obstacles could be, and on at least one occasion, straight through a room, window to window, bursting out of the other side.
Dislikes:
  • 1  Pureblood Arrogance;  There are those who punch down, who think that they are better than other people because they were born with money, or without wings, or pure genetics…all long-lived or all short-lived, or from a hereditary dusty old family line.  These are not people that earned anything, they just won the genetic lottery and flaunt it cruelly for no other reason than they can.  Even purebloods can get punched in the nose.
  • 2  Cruelty;  Perry grew up in and around brothels.  He ran errands for them, protected them, and bore witness to a great many strange kinks.  He understands the difference between sadism and masochism, he has seen bondage, but he has also seen cruelty.  These things are not the same, whether it is cruelty for cruelty’s sake, or some twisted high born abuse, Peregrine will not stand for it.  It is not about violence, he will happily kick the ass of someone that deserves until they are bloody or even dead, it is about being mean-spirited, whether with words or deeds.
  • 3  Drugs/Alchohol;  He has seen too many things and people go wrong when too much of either of these substances are consumed.  In the places he grew up, drug addicts and alcoholics were the worst customers, and often cruel and abusive.  It seemed that men and women could be turned into monsters, where before they had been entirely reasonable.  He doesn’t mind if others do it, within reason, but he normally will not partake himself.  He can be seen drinking socially, but he will nurse it, and almost never allows even a buzz to creep in.
Fears:
  • 1  The Loss of his Wings;  Perry loves to fly, and he loves his wings.  They have brought him trouble over the years, to be sure.  He was mocked and even assaulted a few times, simply because he was seen as an outside, a stranger, a mutt.  Nevertheless, he would not give them up.  He has heard that some have them clipped in their youth, and that idea horrifies him.
  • 2  Being Collared;  Once again, thanks to the environment he was raised in, he has seen man’s inhumanity to man, especially amongst the Blood.  He has seen slave collars and worse, and has come within a hair’s breadth of having one placed on him, were it not for the ladies of the brothel protecting him in his youth.  It is not simply being enslaved that he fears, that is bad enough, but being forced to do anything.  He tends to reflexively rebel at direction, unless it is a choice he can make.  Service, for example, is a choice, being beaten into submission, it not.
  • 3  Being Alone;  Peregrine has grown up surrounded by people.  He has known he was an Orphan, and later a Warlord Prince, and he has always had wings.  Something always separated him from others, set him apart, and often isolated him.  He can be alone, sometimes, and he knows that is even necessary for his temperament, but he worries that he will be an Orphan ultimately, that his long life will leave him all alone in only a few short years.  An orphan, over and over again.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1  Flight; the wings alone do not allow Peregrine to fly, it requires Craft.  Once he ‘cracked the code’ in his youth, he fell in love with the feeling of flight and did it so often he pushed himself into getting better and better at it.  He is swift and extremely acrobatic in the air, and has taught himself efficiency in gliding for going long distances.  Peregrine can even approach quietly from the air, which requires concentration, and far less speed.  He has not met many Eyriens, but he is certain he can give them a run for their money in the sky.
  • 2  Enhanced Battlecraft;  Peregrine is, more often than not, a lone combatant.  He can work in a team, but it would not be something he led.  Alone, he is far more comfortable.  When everyone is a target, the advantage is his.  He prefers to fight with knives, but he can do just as well empty handed.  There is a joy in the fight, almost as much as there is in flying.  His movements are not balletic, his strikes are fast, brutal, efficient, and make use of the environment whenever possible.  Even his wings can come in handy, if he needs them to be.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1  Power Bolts;  Peregrine prefers a hands on approach to combat.  He has not had occasion to hurl power bolts, not when he would prefer to throw a knife, or himself at a combatant.  It is a skill to be precise at a distance with a single bolt of deadly energy, but has never had much of a talent for it.  The most he can do is ruin perfectly good surprise by hitting someone with a searing bolt of annoyance.
  • 2  Combat Craft (Tactics);  this speaks to Peregrine's life as a lone combatant with more enemies than allies.  He had not had to specialize in any particular terrain, nor has he had to concern himself with leading a group or formulating a strategy.  It is something he can learn, perhaps, but currently using Craft to feel the patterns of a battle or to create a battle plan is not something he does well.  He can absolutely fight, but lead?  Not likely.
Life Story

Family:

Unknown Mother
Unknown Father (Eyrien)

History:

Peregrine was born in a Hell Lord Brothel in Goth.  Normally, the ladies and the business take steps to avoid this, but sometimes no matter the efforts, life and Mother Night finds a way.  He never got to know his Mother.  She gave him a name, and Peregrine has been told that the Eyrien they suspect fathered him was a good customer, paid on time, and was never too rough with the girls.  Instead, Peregrine had many Mothers.  His Mother had an assignation, or died, he never really got the story, and so instead, his Mother’s ‘Red Moon’ house raised him.  Peregrine had what some might consider a unique life.  As a small child, he was given tasks in the common room, or put to work at simple things, checking people’s coats, for example.  He could not be made to clean a chimney, much to the consternation of the gangster staff, due to his wings.

Born a Warlord Prince, some immediately saw a use in that.  At the time, Peregrine did not know, most figured that any investment of the brothel in him would pay off when he became old enough to service female clients.  As a boy, however, he did not know this, and was just happy to have food, a roof over his head, and several Aunties that cared for him.  For most of his childhood, he had no idea that the people that tended to the business side of things had plans for him.  Peregrine, Perry as many called him, had any number of odd jobs around the brothel throughout his childhood.  He helped in the kitchens, helped serve refreshments in the main room, and sometimes checked coats or guided customers throughout the building.  When he was not working, the Lady that ran the house saw to it that he received training appropriate to his Caste, lest they let a violent wolf loose in the hen house.

In time, he began to do less around the Red Moon House, and more with the Gangs themselves.  Survival meant violence, most times, and as a Warlord Prince Peregrine learned these lessons early and well.  It was not until after his Birthright that he began to experiment with Flight.    It was the Gang, the Hell Lords that taught him the use of Craft in and out of combat, but it was Peregrine that puzzled out flight, and once he could fly, everyone had a hard time keeping his feet on the ground.  Peregrine began a career as a messenger and delivery boy, entrusted to get goods and parcels across Goth in a hurry, while avoiding those that might otherwise get in his way.  As he approached the right age to make his Descent, Perry discovered a new outlet for his urges; fighting.  Underground fight became a way for him to make his own money, betting on himself until the Gang heard about a new fighter.  Peregrine took his lumps going through the circuit, but he also learned.

He met a very old man at the fights, a golden eyed fellow that had the scent of the Warlord Prince about him.  He told Peregrine that he had talent, but lacked training.  If he wanted to make real money, he had to train.  Peregrine found himself split three ways; he worked at the brothel, increasingly working the lounge as a host or as security, he worked and flew for the Hell Lords, and he trained for his fights.   The man that trained him had seemed old to Peregrine when he first met him at one of his fights.  Weathered and worn, and short on patience, it the old man had a real name, Perry never knew it, he called him Scratch, or Old Scratch, and it seemed to the young Warlord Prince that Scratch had forgotten more about Combat Craft and martial arts than Peregrine himself would ever know.  It did not take long for the training to bear fruit, and Peregrine began to win—a lot.  It was not a bad life, every now and then he had to deal with some ‘pureblood’ twat at the brothel, and very rarely in the fights, but he either was taking their money, intimidating them into behaving, or beating them down.

The downside was that the Hell Lord’s began to call on him when fighting was expected, especially after he took his Descent.  He went from being a young brawler, to a gang enforcer.  The owner of the brothel that he called home told him not to mar his pretty face with all of his fighting, and padded that debt with Healers, and began to sponsor Peregrine’s fights, taking most of his winnings.  What he had believed would be his ticket out of Goth, became his burden.  He had to repay his debt, but he could not make enough for his own future.    Even when the Rut was upon him, it became another liner item in the ledger of his life, another debt to repay, even though many of the young Ladies that never knew him as a child would have lain with him of their own free will.  Peregrine was attractive enough that he was often mistaken for one of the House’s offerings, rather than its guardian.

He was called “The Whoreson” when he was scrapping away for small change, a name that angered him, but that he turned into fuel.  Later on, to some he was “Grins”, because when he smiled, he made all the ladies sigh, and when he was defending his championship, some called him “Wings” for what for some was his most exotic feature.  Fame, even in fighting pits, came challengers, and not everyone wants to win fair and square.  Various groups began to offer Peregrine or Scratch money to take a dive, to fix the betting on their bouts, promising that no one had to know.  They both refused, which occasionally meant that they would have to remind someone they were still Warlord Princes, with Craft and Rage to call upon.  Maybe that was the reason for what happened later.  Someone, some other Gang, or someone in a position of advantage, didn’t like that two gutter rats were defying them.  Peregrine had been connected to the Hell Lords all of his life, so he doubted it was them, but someone that did not fear them, or thought they could get away with it.

He doesn’t know who killed Scratch, but he does know it was meant as a message to him, and perhaps even to the Hell Lords.  It did not matter which it was.  Peregrine had enough.  He had tried, for years, to balance his books.  He had fought for others for the last time.  The next fight, the next scam, the next grift he undertook would be for his pockets, and his alone.  He returned to his rooms over the brothel, and took his leave.  The anger on his face was deterrent enough.  Peregrine flew out of Goth that evening, and made his way to Lennox, choosing the city at random.  Peregrine picked a direct and flew until the rage subsided, resting only when he had to, before flying again.  When grief and rage ran its course, Lennox was beneath him when it did.

He made a home for himself in this new city.  He called himself Peregrine Goth, adding his old home town as a surname for where he was from.  No one came looking for him in the first few months, so he began to make forays into the city.  He, once again, began to take part in the criminal underbelly of the territory, but he ultimately settled into what he knew best; Fighting.  In less than  year, he was a known quantity in the underground fight circuit, and rumor had it that he would not have to worry about the Hell Lords after all.

Character in Play:

The streets were exceptionally dark at this time of night in Goth.  Not just because the sun was set, not just because the moon was nowhere to be seen, and not just because you couldn’t see the stars through the gaps in the buildings.  It was dark because of the things that happened in the streets below those building, in the back alleys where blood ran in the gutters along with the shit, and the screams of the wounded caused people to lock their doors and close their shutters.  People didn’t call for the watch in certain parts of the city, and even if they had, there might not have been a response.  Even the law knew when and where to give the Gangs their head, and the Gangs knew where to stage their violent shows away from eyes that would be forced to act.

”We tried to make you part of the crew, Topsy.”  Tibbs was the leader of Peregrine’s fist, that little gang of five that he was usually teamed with.  ”We told ya that ya couldn’t run these streets without payin’ the tithe.”

”Yeah, I remember.”  Topsy responded, gesturing for his large partner, Turvy, to stay behind him.  Turvy, Peregrine knew, was a Warlord, light-jeweled and large.  He had fists like hams, and liked to wear knuckledusters pretty much all the time.  Topsy was a Prince, barely wearing a Jewel.

Peregrine had already warned Tibbs.  Now he just waited above, pacing along a ledge lost in the darkness.  He had enhanced his hearing, so he could hear.  He could feel the anger building, as he listened to the exchange and worked himself up for the coming confrontation, he was just waiting for the sign.

Topsy spat, ”The way I see it, you’re just a fuckin’ tool.  I can’t even smell a little Craft on you, an’ Topsy an’ Turvy don’t take orders from your kind.”  The Glacian ran his fingers through filthy blonde hair, and snickered at Tibbs and the lads with him.  ”Turvy could cut through you and your boys without breakin’ a sweat.”

”What about you, Topsy?  Think you can take us all on?”

That was the sign.  Peregrine stepped off the roof the building, and swooped down with a roar that startled everyone but his own Gang.  He plowed into Turvy, carrying up from the street for a few feet, and dumped him into the trash bins against the building that made the top of alleyway’s T-junction.  The air left Turvy’s lungs, and Peregrine landed and conjured his knives to hand.  ”Shoulda taken the deal, Turvy.”

Turvy’s eyes widened.  He had seen Peregrine fight in the pits, ”Whoreson?”

Peregrine’s lip curled into a snarl at the epithet, and he launched himself at the larger man.
