Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Likes:
  • 1 Family. Though he will fuss and occasionally grumble, Yolotli’'s family means everything to him.
  • 2 Learning. It doesn't matter if it's drumming, protocol, or the art of war, Yolotli is always striving to learn more.
  • 3 Shalador.  Shalador is not only home, it's where he belongs.  Yolotli can't imagine living anywhere else, regardless of what others may think.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Blood sacrifices.  While he can see that they have been effective, he can't help but wonder if they're still necessary.
  • 2 Losing another family member to sacrifice.  Although his duty to the Vigil always comes first, Yolotli fears that the time will come that someone he loves will be placed on the alter.
  • 3 Mother Night herself. Shalador is a strong willed Territory, with a wild, spiritual nature. Despite this, Yolotli feels a disconnect from Mother Night. He finds her favor to be fickle and his distaste in blood sacrifices has harshly colored his opinion of the Priestesshood.
Fears:
  • 1 Failing the Blind Vigil.  He’s failed his family by having to be sent to the Vigil through his lack of control.  He has become fanatical about his care of his new charges.
  • 2 His Queen finding him lacking. While the Warlord Prince has yet to meet his Queen, he’s already disappointed his family. The disappointment of his Queen would be unbearable.
  • 3 Shalador's future. Now ruled not by a Queen, or the Priestess who’d led them for so many years, Yolotli is unsure what this new era in leadership will usher in.  Adding in the erupting volcano, the Warlord Prince feels that things will get much worse before it gets better.  Still, he’s ready to protect the Vigil and his people until his last breath.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Photographic memory.  Yolotli’s memory is both a useful skill and a problem if he allows it to be.  His photographic memory has allowed him to quickly memorize data, faces, music, and skills, which has helped greatly in his training. However, because he tends to brood, every mistake, misstep, or slight is never far from his mind.
  • 2 Physical Enhancement. While the Green is a respectable Jewel, Yolotli uses every option at his disposal to heighten his skills. Physical Enhancement Craft allows him to raise his stamina and strength when he needs to, and allows him to go without sleep when needed.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Compulsion Craft. Yolotli is a direct sort of person. He'd much rather do what needs doing himself, or reason with someone else to get things done. He's not one for trickery or coercion.
  • 2 Death Spells. Yolotli believes that death is meant to be faced head on with a weapon in your hand. That your enemy deserves the honor of a death at your hands, not through Craft that could kill someone without their even being aware of it.

History:
Born in the verdant jungles in the Nayarit Province, Yolotli’s early years were filled with laughter.  His mother was a respected Healer, and his father served in the local Queen’s Third Circle.  When his Caste became apparent, he turned is instincts on his older sister Xipil, who bore it all with grace and laughter. The Tlacat’s lived under the banner of the Greater Tribe Marzena, although, Yolotli never felt that he was lesser or different.  His life was ruled by lessons, and duty, even from a young age.  His father, while not sharing his son’s Caste, knew that structure and limits would serve his son well when he came into his own.

When he was ten, his brother Ollin was born, and Yolotli was at first excited for the newest addition. He soon learned that while he was glad Ollin was here, babies didn’t do much that was exciting, and the young Warlord Prince turned his attention to other things.  Once the Warlord was able to toddle about, Yolotli took it upon himself to look after his younger brother, much to his parent’s amusement.

As he prepared for his Birthright Ceremony, his lessons in basic Craft and Protocol took on a sense of urgency. While he still was allowed time to be a child, lessons and duty were staples of his day. As he grew, there was less and less time for games, and more things to learn. At the age of 8, Yolotli received his uncut Purple Dusk, and his father was granted paternity.  Yolotli had wondered what sort of Jewel he would receive. If it would be Dark or almost Dark like his mother, or a Lighter Jewel like his father’s and sister’s.  In the end it didn’t matter, and he set about mastering (as much as he could) his new Jewel.

The beginning of his training with weapons was something that Yolotli had looked forward to from the moment he could hold a stick and play in mock battles with the other boys in the village.  He quickly learned however that training was nothing as simple as playing with sticks.  With his boyish fantasies under control, Yolotli threw himself into training with single minded devotion.  Here was an outlet for his growing temper and boundless energy.  Still, it was treated with the reverence it deserved, and the knowledge that his newfound skills could hurt himself or someone else if not done correctly.  That learning how to protect and defend wasn’t a game, and that every Shaladorian needed to know how to protect themselves and others.

Like all children, Yolotli learned early on the difference between a kill and a sacrifice.  It was one of the first lessons about sacrifices that Shalador taught its children.  That blood sacrifices were sacred, and deserved to be held at certain Temples.  There was few other things that were so abhorrent as to allow a sacrifice’s blood to feed the earth outside of a Temple, overseen by the Priestesses.

So it was with great shock and sorrow that his sister Xipil could be found conducting sacrifices outside of the Temple’s auspices.  For the first time in his young life, Yolotli’s world was coming down around him. It didn’t matter that his sister had found a willing sacrifice for her rite. Or that she had hoped that the blood sacrifice would help her husband recover. If anything, that fact alone made it worse. That she would take something sacred, and meant for Shalador, and turn it towards her own needs.

Her grief at watching her husband wither away could be excused, no one doubted the pain of watching a loved one suffer. And had she reached for help, it would’ve been given. But her manner of coping, of looking for a solution could not be forgiven. And so the family found themselves watching a sacrifice at one of the nearby Temples.  Straight backed, and with a closed face, Yolotli watched his older sister on the altar, her blood flowing out, and life leaving her body.  It was, without a doubt, one of the hardest moments of Yolotli’s life.

His life changed from that moment, no longer the happy go lucky boy ready to entertain with a quip to lighten the mood. He threw himself into his lessons, using weapons and offensive craft training as an outlet for his grief. His instructors saw a gift for weapons, and nurtured it.  Encouraged to learn more, Yolotli pushed himself to the limits to master this craft, not wanting to let his family or his instructors down.

As he grew older, he was taken under the wing of an older Warlord Prince, who furthered his education on what it was to be a Warlord Prince. Through Yaotl’s instruction, Yolotli learned the finer points of Protocol and how to best use it to his advantage when needed. That Protocol could be used to guide his temper. With Yaotl’s recommendation, he began training in the local village Court that his father served in.  After receiving his Green, he formally joined the Court, and Served in the same Circle as his father.

For a time, life was good.  While the Queen he served wasn’t his Queen, he found her to be acceptable and his duties relatively easy.  His work consisted mostly of escort duties for the witches in the lower Circles, and the occasional guard duty for the Queen.  Already near retirement when he joined the Court, the Village Queen took on an apprentice with the hope of grooming her into the Queen that would eventually replace her.  The apprentice Queen acclimated quickly to life in the Court, and life continued much as it had previously.

As the years progressed, the younger Queen took over more and more of the elder’s duties, until she was ruling all but in name.  All that remained was for the ruling Queen to retire in favor of her chosen successor.  When the retirement came, the Court was shuffled around, with some people staying on, and others were replaced with those the new Queen preferred.  As a young male, Yolotli had expected to be released from service.  This new Queen wasn’t his, and he had less experience than some of the males that she’d replaced.  To his surprise, he was offered a provisional contract in her Second Circle. With no other prospects, and with nothing to explain his discomfort with the idea, he accepted.
Yolotli expected things to change, after all Courts build themselves in accordance with their Queen’s will.  Little by little, the Court became more polarized between those who gained their Queen’s good will, and those who weren’t among her favorites. Unfortunately, Yolotli wasn’t among the Queen’s favorites.  Even without her playing favorites, something about her grated against his nerves, and he found himself taking the duties that kept him out of the Queen’s reach.  Eventually, she noticed, and began to specifically ask for him, and directed the Master of the Guard to add him to her detail.  Although she’d been trained to handle Warlord Princes, and had been specifically told how to work with dark Jeweled Warlord Princes, the Queen continued to pick and snipe at Yolotli, pushing his boundaries and trying to bend him to her will.

Nearing his breaking point, Yolotli went through the proper chains of command and asked to be released from his contract.  Although his contract was provisional, she denied his request, and asked that he remain until the end of his contract.  Deflated, Yolotli continued on, determined to finish out his term.  Unfortunately, his temper eventually slipped his control after one to many slights and he lashed out.  He had the good sense to direct his rage not at the Queen or her Triangle, but during a sparring session with another guard.  Though he managed not to kill the other male, he was considered to be too unstable to remain at Court, even with the influence of a Queen.  With few options left to him, he was  sent to the Blind Vigil.

The Warlord Prince has spent the last twenty three years serving the Vigil.  With the help of his assigned Black Widow, he’s come to understand that while he could’ve handled things differently rather than let things build to a head, it wasn’t his fault.  He’s not damaged, or irredeemable. With the Vigil, he’s managed to find the balance that he was lacking before.  He’s found a task that he feels is honorable, and perhaps eventually he’ll feel that he no longer causes his family to feel shame.
