Appearance

Play By: Kaley Cuoco
Distinguishing Features:

Sophie has hazel-green eyes that light up emerald when the light hits them, but usually (according to her own opinion) looks more like pond muck out in pasture.  Her skin is fairer than most from Challiot, but thankfully years at sea have given her some resistance to the sun and the salt and she doesn’t burn nearly as much as she once did.    She is also noticeably taller than most women and can stand toe to toe and nose to nose with most of the men on the Orchid.

Personality

Personality:

Sophie is a tough and determined young woman, who has learned early on that standing still for too long will let all the bad things in life catch up to you.  That perhaps is the most appealing part of joining the crew of the Poison Orchid, a ship never sits in one place for very long.  It was a lot easier to be on the run from your past if you don’t really have to leave your home.

Sophie looks like a sweet, helpless and pliable Healer, but anyone who has tried to press her finds the steel spine of a strong witch beneath the soft exterior.  She is no fool, she doesn’t fall for the sweet words or flattering seduction of a handsome face.  Her craft is sure and steady, swift and effective.  Her new place on the ship means she has had to adapt her craft to fit her new patient clientele and the option of relaxing rests and ‘taking it easy’ is not in their vocabulary.

Still Sophie would not change her new circumstances for all the gold in the Realm.  She loves being out on the sea, the newness of each day, the fresh stinging cold air on her face, the new challenges that are presented to her every day.  She can stand toe to toe with any member of the crew when it comes to pushing them to following her orders and even the more stubborn crew member who insists that a blast from a bolt of power in their leg is “just nothing” finds themselves planted on the galley deck with the feisty healer pinning them down as she cleans and closes the wound with brisk efficiency.

Likes:
  • The freedom of living on the water
Sophie was never called to the sea, as much as she enjoyed her times as a child swimming and relaxing on the coastlines of Chaillot, but after leaving her home she has come to find that the Orchid and living on the waves offers her release from the restrictions of her home territory and the anonymity to truly be herself without fear. The push of the cold, salty wind on her face feels like a deep soothing scrubbing on her soul, cleansing away the thoughts of her past life and leaving her fresh and clean for this new one.

  • Learning sea shanties
Living in a coastal town, she would take the time to hang out on the docks and listen to the different crews at their work while their ship was in harbor for whatever reason.  Each vessel had adapted similar songs to their own liking, and each adaptation was raunchier and more lively than the last.

  • Reading
One of the nice things about being a Healer on ship of the Orchid's size was that unless there was a fight or a bout of illness, there wasn't too much for her to do.   So she learned to pass the time with books, enjoying time with a book, with the gentle rocking of the boat around her as her mind drifted to lands far away and places only in the imagination.

    Dislikes:

  • Being pushed around
Being a young woman and “only a healer”, she would find herself on the wrong end of certain comments about her capabilities and ability to keep up with such a rough and tumble crew.  These things only pushed her to work harder to prove herself, as well as make sure the next time that particular crew member needed her aid, she wouldn’t be quite so gentle.

  • Not having a fresh supply of herbs at her disposal
Her supplies of herbs have to be dried to prevent growing mold or becoming useless and destroyed by the damp sea air.  Dried herbs lose some of their potency and usefulness but it wasn’t like she could grow her own garden on deck, now was it?

  • Seagullsl
Sophie loved the sea, the air, the sun, the sting of the salt and the rocking of the waves.  Even the smell of fish and seaweed filled her senses with a sense of enrichment and energy, but seagulls were awful.  Loud, obnoxious, smelly, disease ridden creatures, little better than rats with wings.  The only thing seagulls were good for was as a sign that land was near even before it was seen on the horizon but even that was pushing her charitable feelings towards them.

    Fears:

  • The crew finding out her true strength
An Opal jeweled witch in Challiot is still considered light enough not to be much of a risk of being mentally unstable and sent to Dark Haven.   Sophie never wears her Red and none of the crew of the Orchid wear darker, so her secret has managed to stay a secret for all these years.  Her own family had threatened to have her submitted to the institution “for her own good” after she came away with the Opal and it was only the kindness of her grandmother who had stayed the hand of her mother.  As much as she trusted and loved her crew like family, there was still a small voice deep inside who cautioned her to be careful.

  • Returning home
It would take a force of will not her own to return to her home village and she feared in the depth of her soul what it would do to her if she returned to face the family she had ran away from, the village and people she had abandoned, even if it was done with the best of intentions for them.

  • Firefights
Being part of a privateer crew has given Sophie many close encounters with the dangers of the high seas, nothing more than the battles between the Orchid and her prey.  Besides the injuries that she has to tend to, her lack of combative ability renders her rather useless and pitiful hiding in her cabin and hoping for victory.

    Craft Strengths:

  • Triage Healing
Quick and able in a dangerous and rapid situation, Sophie excels in fast paced, rapid healing spells and quick decision healing applications.   There has been quite a few times in her time aboard the Orchid when those skills came very much into play. Being on a vessel that sees combat, Sophie has had to switch her style of healing to one that was more beffiting a combat vessel and found that she was quite gifted at it.  She can make quick assessments to injuries and rapid temporary solutions that have saved the life of many a crew member with an otherwise grave injury.

  • Internal Healing
Sophie has a keen sense for internal injuries, broken bones and punctured organs.  Her ability to see deep injuries that would otherwise require surgery to care for allows her to use craft to set them right.  She has also developed the mastery skills that allow her to pass her hand through flesh to deal with internal damages that surgery and other intervention would simply not allow for.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • Growing Herbs
Even if she could grow fresh herbs, it would be a rather pointless task.  While most healers have an innate ability to care for and nurture their own garden, Sophie’s thumb is as black as midnight.  People she can heal, but even touching a living plant causes it to roll over twice and die a horrible death.

  • Combative skills
Healers heal, not wound and sadly this is yet another truth to Sophie the Healer.  As much as she tried to learn combative skills, if only for her own defense, she is pitifully bad at them.   However, this did lead to her learning some physical defensive moves to protect herself, something that she enjoys practicing daily.  Hugo makes a willing sparring partner when she requests it.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Elese Pelletier, RoseSummer Sky witch
Father: Julien Pelletier, WhiteTiger Eye Warlord
Brother: Raiffelle Pelletier, Summer SkyPurple Dusk Warlord
Sister : Genevivre Pelletier, YellowRose Hearthwitch

    History:

If there ever was a more boring and bland family ever to exist in a territory, it would surprise Sophie.  As far back as was recorded in their small little village, her family had been one of no importance.  No Queens, no Warlord Princes, no Black Widows or Priestesses and thank the Darkness, no unstable dark jewels.   When Sophie showed the signs of being a natural Healer, it was probably the most exciting caste to stem from their bloodline in known history.  Her parents were both light jeweled and proud of the fact, wearing their jewels like some twisted sense of honor.

Elese and Julien married early, and bred quickly, producing three children in almost as many years.  Sophie was the eldest and doted upon by her family.  When her little sister Genevivre fell ill as a newborn, Sophie shocked everyone by using her budding craft skills to bring down her sister’s dangerous fever instinctual.  Certain that Sophie’s skills as a talented Healer would bring her far into an influential court in the territory, her parents nurtured and developed her gifts as best they could with their modest background.

The nervous whispers began on the day of her Birthright, when all the other children reveled with their families in the joy they found with their newly gifted jewels, young Sophie felt cold and alone as her family simply stared at the uncut Opal in her small hands.  An Opal.  Still viewed as one of the lighter jewels but with a Birthright poised on the edge of a glittering abyss and a certain step forward in to the dangerous dark jewels.  Everyone in Challiot knew that those who wore the Dark were at risk for mental instability and dangerous tendencies, and with the potential to walk away from her Offering as deep as the Red, her family fretted.

Sophie knew, and saw in their careful watch when they thought she didn’t notice, the fear and worry that grew with each passing year.  It made Sophie equally fearful, seeing the look on their faces as the days grew closer and closer to the time of her Offering.  If not for her proven skills, she knew that she might find herself in danger from even her family.

The day of her Offering she packed a bag with meager belongings and left her family home in the early hours of the morning, catching the Opal winds and launching herself to a neighboring district with a much busier port.  She hoped her small savings would buy her passage on a ship to another province or perhaps even another territory, one where her jewels were appreciated not feared.

Before she set out, she had to know.   Deep within her soul she fell the pull of the abyss, the call of her Offering and as the sun set that very day, she stepped into a temple and made her Offering.   When the sun rose the next morning, the sky was tinged with streaks of scarlet, as red as the jewel she held in awe in her hands.   Some of the sea would view this as a warning but to Sophie it was a promise of hope and a renewal of resolution that she had made the right choice.

It didn’t take her long to procure a place, though not in the way she had intended.   Taking dinner one evening in an establishment known to be frequented by sailors looking to hire and fill the ranks of their crew, she met Hugo the Quartermaster of a vessal known as the Poison Orchid.   It was the name of the ship that caught Sophie’s attention.  As a name, it was meant to inspire fear she was sure, but the Poison Orchid was a plant with medicinal properties, particulary used as an aphrodisiac for male difficulties.   She wasn’t sure if it was her comment about the ship’s name that caught his attention or the obvious fact that only a Healer would be aware of the herbal properties of the plant.   His ship was looking for a Healer, she was looking for work and a way out.   Hugo seemed to respect her need not to discuss her past and she never used her Red jewel so it was assumed she was an Opal jeweled Healer who was running from something in her past that she refused to speak of.

She set sail with the crew of the Orchid a few weeks later and had been a loyal and faithful member of the crew, sharing in their take, their time and their adventures and for a while this was a life of contentment and fulfillment that Sophie had been seeking.   The fear she had been raised with that she might find herself afflicted with the madness that attached itself to those of darker jewels never appeared and since her Opal was the darkest jewel on the ship, no one was aware that it wasn’t her jewel of rank.

It wasn’t until four years later when all that might have changed.   The Orchid had been docked for repairs after a serious storm had sent her into some shoals and she was dry docked for a few weeks.   During that time the crew tried to enjoy some time on land and Sophie was no exception.  Four years at sea had given her a strong set of sea legs but she had sometimes missed the feel of solid land beneath her feet for more than a day or two at a time.

It was during that time she met Pierre, a dashing and very handsome Prince.  Sophie hadn’t had any romantic entanglements since she left home and even though she was surrounded by men on the Orchid, it would have been too awkward and complicated to strike up a romantic interlude with any of them.   Pierre made her feel feminine and soft, kissing her callused palms roughened by the sea and the salt and the sun.  His hands dance over her body, playing her like a well-oiled instrument and the feeling of him between her legs crashed powerful waves of lust and desire through her body.   For once her name wasn’t shouted over the shouts of pain or fighting, but whispered huskily as teeth nibbled on her earlobe, waking her from her dreams.

Despite being happy with her profession and on the Orchid, Sophie began to see her life with Pierre.  She could see setting up her own Healer’s house in a quiet village, living a life of passion and love, bearing children and living her life to a fullness of happiness she couldn’t have living on the open water.   Shortly before the Orchid was set to return to the water, Sophie had made her choice.   She had gone to the Orchid to gather her belongings and leave a letter of resignation for the Captain and then returned to Pierre’s home to share in the happy news.   She was so excited and blindly in love that she never noticed the scents in the air as she entered the house, never heard the soft whispers and cries of passion until she opened the door to his bedroom.

Pierre never even looked back at her as she watched him drive himself faster into the witch beneath him.   She could do nothing more than stare in disbelief as the witch smiled cruelly at her before digging her nails into Pierre’s muscularly perfect ass as she crested over a wave of pleasure.  She stood silent and frozen as a statue as they both reached the pinnacle of their passion in a loud exclamation.  Pierre pulled away from the satiated woman in his bed and finally turned to look at Sophie with a look so completely dispassionate and unaffected by the fact she had caught him with another woman.   Sophie felt something in her heart break and her love turned dark and angry.

Without a second thought she called upon the power of her Red jewel and saw his eyes widen first in surprise and then fear when he saw the color of the jewel that appeared around her neck.  It would be the last sight he would see as Sophie turned her power into a sharp dagger and her knowledge of internal healing into a powerful weapon, squeezing tightly around his heart and his lover’s heart.   They didn’t even have a chance to cry out or defend themselves as she pulled and ripped their hearts from their chests in an explosion of Red jeweled strength.

It took Sophie a moment to clear the haze of anger from her vision before the weight of what she had done took hold of her mind.  Nauseous with shock, she vanished her Red jewel and bolted out of the house, running until she reached the Orchid.  She wasn’t sure what she would say the Captain, how she would explain her note and then her sudden reappearance but he never spoke a word to her.   Maybe there was something in her face that didn’t require an explanation or perhaps there was something in her face that told him all he needed to know.   They never spoke of it; he simply called in a tongue of witch fire and burned the letter in front of her, then dismissed her with a nod.

Hugo knew something was wrong, but a few short and terse words from her got through that she didn’t want to talk about it and that was the end of it.   It was several months before they returned to that port and some careful questioning told her that after Pierre was discovered, it was assumed that a jealous lover had dispatched them.  Pierre was renowned for his lack of discretion when choosing bedmates and many of them had been women with husbands who did not approve of their wives’ extramarital adventures.

    Show Us What You've Got

Sophie sat perched on the mast, her ankles curled into the sail ropes for a more secure seat, her back against the central mast as she closed her eyes feeling the sea air whip through her.  It was so wonderful to be back out on the water,  where the air around you and the water beneath you was ever changing.  Beneath her she could hear Hugo barking orders to the crew as they set out into the open water, away from the stink of land and city.

Okay, it didn’t really stink but she could still smell the noxiousness of blood, and anger, and power in her nostrils.  When she closed her eyes, she could still see the final beats of those twin hearts, lying exposed on the still warm chests of Pierre and his lover.  His eyes were fixed on hers, accusingly frozen in the death that she caused.   She opened her eyes and stared down at her hands where her Red jewel was cupped in her trembling fingers.   For a moment, for just the briefest of moments she thought about flinging the accursed thing into the ocean, letting the cold darkness embrace it, but it wouldn’t help.   The jewel was just a reservoir of the power that lived inside her, and unless she was willing to fling herself into that dark abyss, throwing away the jewel wouldn’t solve anything.

Everything she had feared from the day she came away from her offering at the depth of the Red seemed to be coming true.   She was unstable, insane perhaps.  A healer’s task was to restore life, never to take it away and she had broken that most fundamental truth with her actions.  Was that something she would ever be able to forgive herself?    Sophie wiped a tear from her cheek that she hadn’t even realized had fallen.

A noise below her caught her attention and she saw one of the crew members climbing the mast ladder, apparently it was his turn in the Crow’s nest.  She quickly vanished her Red jewel and untangled herself from her rope harness in time to greet the watch before making her way back down to the decks.   There was still some time before dinner and she should make sure her services weren’t needed before tucking in with a book and some quiet time.  She was a Healer, and now her heart needed the time to heal the most.
