Dreams are just Actions you Haven't Taken

Tommen sat in the waiting room, his shoulders squared and his signet ring catching the light from the window. Today was the day. He was not going to say he had prepared for this his entire life, because that would be a lie. It was more like twenty or so odd years, meticulously commissioning plans, finding land, drawing up lesson plans, finances, creating a statement of purpose, gathering interest, navigating the complex dance of Glacia. So a hobby really, something that he didn’t care about wither way. If this Queen denied him funding it wouldn’t be the end of the world. He could always raise the funds locally. Who wouldn’t want to support a school for the lightest jeweled among them?

“Tommen Larsen. The Steward will see you now.” A witch stepped into the room and the Prince smiled brightly, standing up with his folder. It had taken almost a month to get this appointment, Winsol slowing the already slow process of politics to a halt. But hey, if it hadn’t taken this long than he would not have the nice scarf that his sister had knitted him. It was a dark blue, to match his eyes, and he thought it made a great first impression. That is what really mattered to most people. Not the planning. Not the numbers. But how one looked. Wearing the Purple Dusk certainly did not make him look appealing, but the wide spread good that his school could do? The public prestige one could get from investing in ways to stop the next generation from seeking out the smugglers? Well.

That looked pretty good to just about everyone he had talked too.

Striding into the Stewards office, Tommon bowed to the man and called in a gift for him. He had thought long and hard about the gift he would present to this Queen and her representative. Finally, he had settled on a drawing from one of the children he taught in his free time. It depicted a colorful circle with the word “Glacia” neatly painted in different Jewel colors. Small stick figures were delicately drawn holding hands across the territory, smiling under a bright yellow sun. The words “For Lady Kalas” were written in bright red ink at the bottom.

“Thank you for seeing me, Prince Jonasson. This is for Lady Kalas, from one of the programs I volunteer at. Is she going to be joining us or should be get started?”

Christian Jonasson
Spoiler: Christian Jonasson (click to show/hide)
sat thoughtfully behind his desk, looking down at the request for an audience with the queen that he had recieved.  There were always so many petitions and requests that he had instituted a policy that all requests were made in writing.  Certain requests received preference of course, petitions of a diplomatic nature, requests from Queens of the Province to speak with Miina but for the most part he had instituted and Miina had supported a first-come, first-serve system.  Usually the pile of requests was much smaller, but due to the requirements of Winsol festivities as well as the collection of winter tithes, the court had been fairly busy over the last six weeks.  Miina had informed him that unless an emergency arose, the last two weeks of this month would be reserved to play catchup on all the requests.  Most he had been able to deligate himself without needing to bother the Queen, simple requests mostly.  Miina had been rather preoccupied of late, gaining not one but two new Bonded males over the course of the last few weeks and then there was that messy affair with Lady Inga’s court.

Miina had been reviewing candidates to take over as the new Queen of Kirowsk and it had not been an easy task.  There were several strong Queens who could take over the empty seat and of course the matter of choosing was very political in nature.  Miina had decided to spend the morning reviewing their qualifications and had been secluded in the quiet of her office while he saw to petitions.

The young man who walked in, and to Prince Jonasson they were all young men, was well dressed, groomed and held himself with the air of someone who was had authority but not arrogant.  He spied the signet ring on the young man’s hand and nodded as he stood.  So, a Keeper had a request for the Queen.  This would be interesting.   He extended his hand politely, noticing the thin collar that peeked just beneath the collar of his white tailored shirt.  Light Jeweled then.  He motioned for the other man to sit but before he did, he pulled a piece of paper from the folder in his hands and placed it on the desk.

Prince Jonasson glanced down at the colorful piece of artwork.  It wasn’t the first Winsol present that a petitioner had brought for the Queen in these weeks, but it was certainly the most interesting. “Prince Larsen, I am sure Lady Kalas will be delighted with this gift.  Please extend her thanks to the child who drew this.”  He folded his hands on the desk. “The Queen is busy with an important matter at the moment, I am overseeing her petitions at the moment so please, feel free to continue with your proposal.  I see from your request that you are interested in establishing a school for the Light Jeweled?  We have a number of schools for children all around the Province, all financed by their respective villages and districts.  What makes your idea for a school that specifically tailors to the Light Jeweled children something that the Queen would take an interest in?”

Tommon nodded politely. He had not expected the Province Queen after all. He was not Dark jeweled. He was of little importance. Her absence made him feel more comfortable even. He had always found it easier to talk to males.

“This is the first drawing the child drew when I started the program.”

Tommen took another sheet out of his folder, sliding it across the table to the man. It was drawn in dark purples and blacks, the lines angrily circling until they created a streaked face, long dark marks blotting the image. Bright red blood dripped out from the eyes and the mouth, but even that was obscured by the black background the child had meticulously blocked in.

“I’d like you to notice, Prince, the difference between these two drawings. I asked the children to draw a self-portrait, of themselves or their families.” Tommon paused for a moment, giving the other man time to consider. “It is clear that something within those of the Light Jeweled is dissatisfying to Mother Night, but the lack of resources for the Light Jeweled is doing them a disservice. If this child had been left alone, in her orphanage with no one to guide her, who knows what she would have done? Harmed herself? Joined the smugglers? Regardless, it would not have benefited Glacia.”

Tommen had watched this child grow for years. He had nurtured her curiosity, been there when she cried about receiving her collar, and encouraged her desire in Hearth Craft. Sometimes he wondered if his was the only praise she ever heard. “I’m proud to say that after my program she is serving in the third circle of a district court. Engaged to be married. Building a life.”

Swallowing hard, he continued, his passion shining through. He had made a mental note to restrain himself, not get too involved, but that was exceedingly difficult for the man. “You ask why it is important to build a Light Jeweled school. Well, there it is. Do you know why this child excelled? It is because she was in a classroom with other children in her same situation, with teachers that had made something of their lives despite their inadequacy. Such an environment is vital. Representation is vital. I’ve conducted studies. Followed some children for ten years. Those that enroll in a mixed school, of both Dark and Light Jewels, tend to do poorly. Teasing and bullying reigns. Self-confidence is at a low. Some do not even master basic craft.” He laid out graphs and statistics to back up his claims.

The Prince certainly would not have gotten through his childhood if he had not had hi family, prodding him to attend his Craft classes, even if the other children ridiculed him. It had been hard. Exceedingly hard. Tommen did not want it to be so hard for the children in his school. “How is someone supposed to make someone of their lives if they do not even know basic craft? Options seem limited then. Smuggling seems enticing.”

“This school could change that for the children who attend. It could be a safe space for them to grow. I think they deserve that, not only for themselves, but to better Glacia. Don’t you?”

The Steward looked down at the drawings, his face professional and impassive.  He was not immune to the pain of children, he had seen very vividly the effects of neglect and abuse on the smallest of the Glacians but he was no healer of the mind.  Perhaps the child had suffered from night terrors and it was reflected in their art.  No matter, it was clearly evident between the two pieces of art.  But children’s colorful imaginations aside, he waited patiently to hear the crux of evidence to support his request.   The Prince had heard a great many heart breaking pleas in his time as Steward for the Queen of Ivalo, but emotions did not run a well oiled court, facts and hard work did.

He listened to the presentation, his eyes glancing down at the charts and graphs, at the meticulously detailed report, part of which he had already seen with the request for an audience previously but he flipped through the papers as he skimmed the information.   It was a good plan, a solid plan, but not the first time he had heard similar arguments.

“If the Queen and Court agree to finance this project, how will you keep it running?  Where will you get the revenue to keep the school open?  After all, you can’t expect the court to continuously pay for the full cost of the students.  What about students who are not local to the site you wish to build?  Will you offer a boarding home?  What if students cannot meet the tuition that you might set?  Who will you hire to run the school?  Do you already have someone in mind?  Will it be run by the light-jeweled or the dark? “

He leaned forward, his tone businesslike where some might have tried to find patronizing, “What about the children who have received a lighter jewel, like Summer Sky for their birthright but have a very strong possibility to emerge with an Opal or darker?  Will you exile them to a general school simply because they will outshine their classmates?”   He smiled.

“Your idea is a good one, and I’m sure I would have no problem convincing the Queen in supporting it.  She has a dear spot for children, all the children of Ivalo and would of course be very interested in anything that nurtures the lighter jeweled to their fullest potential and make them valuable members of society.  She loathes the smugglers and the lies they spread about what it means to be light jeweled in Glacia and has been working hard to shine the truth on the lies.”

“But Lady Kalas is a very shrewd woman,” he said with a proud smile, “some Queens leave the details to her court, but she is very intelligent and keeps us on our toes, checking the records and making sure every penny is accounted for.  She will want to know the financial plans as well as the mission statement before she releases any funds.  If you can impress her with your forethought and organization, she might even bankroll more than you had originally requested.”

He paused and sat back, allowing Tommen to continue if he had more to offer.

The Prince couldn’t help but glance up repeatedly at the Steward to make sure he was listening. To make sure that he hadn’t been written off yet. A lot was riding on this after all. The future of the school, maybe. The future of so many children. The thought was almost dizzinging.

Trying to relax, Tommon smiled, the skin around his eyes crinkling. “All excellent questions. I expect the school to run on something called “an endowment” as it goes foreward. I studied the practice in Dhemlan Academy histories. After the students come of age, they will enter society as productive members and give back to the school. That coupled with minimal Province investment and outside donors should be sufficient to keep it running.” The Prince cleared his throat and continued.

“If you look at room G on the scaled map, you can see I am offering a boarding house right here. It will house children from Districts far away, but they will return to their families on weekends if desired.” He tapped the hand drawn blueprints for the school lovingly. He would have craved a space with others like him when he was little.

“I have approached two light-jeweled witches to run the school with me. They will run classes and watch over the children during the day. The entire student body and staff will be light-jeweled—white to tiger-eye only—from hearth witches to students. I think it will really be a great way to show the kids how they can still be involved in Glacian society, despite their Birthright.”

“Oh, I was hoping you would say that!” Tommon explained, before quieting himself. Reminding himself to be calm and stable. Like the Darker Jeweled like to see those in his position. He couldn’t let his passion get away from him. “I have the mission statement right here.” He called in a heavy binder and sat it down on the table with a thump. “I also have detailed the financial plans in section P of the proposal.” Tommon ventured a small smile back at the Steward, hoping the man did not think he was being too smug. Sometimes people confused his energy for rudeness. "Should I just leave this for the Queen to look over? I would love the opportunity to speak with her, but I understand if she is too busy of course."

Unknown to the Prince, the Steward and his Queen had worked out an excellent system of communication when dealing with petitioners.  Instead of wasting time and repeating things that had already been discussed, he was very skilled at relaying mind to mind information as it was revealed to him at the same time.  He described it akin to being able to translate at the same time as he was hearing a new language.   With Miina indisposed in her suites for the next couple of days, it was very handy to keep her involved when needed without requiring her to leave her bed.  If she needed, she could dispatch a servant to deliver any messages she wanted to tell him of importance.  He would not allow her to push even the effort of a communication thread to thread beyond receiving.

As he relayed what was being told to him based off his own questions, he had good feeling about this plan.  He knew his queen well enough to know that she would want to be invested in this plan.  She liked children and she was a good queen, wanting to look after all her people.  As the Prince wrapped up his presentation, the Steward heard a soft knock at his office door before a slip of paper appeared on his desk.

He held up his hand briefly as he read the note, smiling softly before looking up at the petitioner.  “Very good presentation Prince.  My Queen approves of this business venture and will give you the funds you need to begin breaking ground on this enterprise.”  He passed him the note so he could see for himself the Queen’s signature before calling in an envelope filled with marks.  “Here is a portion of your asking costs.   Lady Kalas won’t front the whole investment immediately, but this will be enough to start hiring workers to build or renovate the necessary buildings.”  He folded his hands neatly.

“Lady Kalas is unavailable currently, but requests that you return at the end of the week to join her for dinner here at the residence.  She has some ideas she would like to discuss with you personally and see if they are something you would be willing to work into your plan.  You can update her on your progress then, perhaps provide her with any new developments you wish to share with her.”  He smiled, “I should warn you Prince, this project holds a very strong interest with my Queen, and she will be paying very close attention to its development and progress.  Are you prepared to have such close scrutiny?  Not many, light or dark, are comfortable being under the eye of a Red-jeweled Queen.

Tommen tried to remain calm throughout the entire meeting. He tried to remain professional. Obedient. Respectful. But the excitement bubbled out of him in a tiny gasp of elation as the Steward granted him his proposal. He had waited so many long years for this. It would help so many children. The Prince could see them now, their faces turned up towards the light, smiles dancing across their lives instead of the hatred he had been witness too. A safe space.

Although the Prince was stubborn, a small part of him had thought this would never come to pass. That maybe he would never truly be able to help others as he so desired. This Queen would change things though. For the better. Whoever she was, whatever person she was, he owed her a debt. “I have nothing to hide, Prince Jonasson. Lady Kalas is more than welcome to observe or supervise any part of the project. I am available 24/7 if she ever has any concerns or questions. I’ve left my card in the proposal.” He smiled and bowed to the male. “Thank you for seeing me. I look forward to meeting with Lady Kalas in person next week.”

Holding tight to the envelope the Steward had given him, Tommon planned to get started on the project right away. Finding teachers. Contacting builders. He had a few assignments coming up with the Midnight Keepers, but that just meant he would do the work at night. Every moment the school wasn’t functioning was another Light Jeweled future lost.
