Dhemlan has become a land divided. The corruption that Witch’s Purge wiped out in the rest of the Realms was preserved by the well-meaning sacrifice of the territory’s Ebon Gray Queen. As such, the corruption here has only intensified. The tension between the Landen and the Blood who were meant to care for them is fast reaching a boiling point.

This thread runs concurrent with and after Just About Rare Love

Winter 192/ Post- Winsol

In the end, Amore de Medina realized that she’d lost hold of her Province long ago.

Between the massive debts she’d accrued and her fondness for designer drugs, her decision-making capacity was severely limited. Mari realized, as Amore’s face crumpled in defeat, that she truly believed she was just one win from turning it all around. Mari had seen the books, though, the ones that Amore had been cooking for Darkness-knew how long: she’d dug herself into a hole that even the Territory Court wouldn’t be able to ignore. She’d only managed the Province’s tithes by leveraging the aid of both of her District Queens.

And she had the temerity to overcharge me in favor of Ysabel. Tsk, tsk, Amore. You should have come to me first.

Vicente was currently moving from room by room, cataloguing the number and value of gaudy baubles that Amore purchased with her borrowed fortune. Most of it could be re-sold or re-purposed, though Mari left instructions to move valuable items into her private collection. Mari sat in Amore’s office now, reviewing the remaining books and trying to understand the scope of Amore’s monetary mistakes. She combed the office for everything she could find, including hidden safes or doors. She’d have to review the contracts for the remaining Court members and determine whom among them was still fit to serve.

Amore and her males were allowed to leave with a suggestion that they not remain in Dhemlan. Amore had asked where she would go. It hurt Mari, deep down, to see her former friend brought so low. But were they ever truly friends? Being a Queen in Dhemlan was a cutthroat business and only those willing give blood or spill it were rewarded with a Court of their own.

Little Terreille is nice this time of year, Amore. I hear they’re not even collaring Queens anymore.” Mari said.

Amore’s males had removed her from the palace, accompanied by her male, Armando, and a few members of the  Province Guard. Once done, the remaining Guard pledged themselves to her rule. The rest of Amore’s Court had been contacted and advised to attend a special session of Court in two days’ time.

It was nearing sunset when she finally had the time for her glass of red wine that matched the color of her dress. This view from this room stretched eastward, all the way to the ocean. The north and west, she could almost see Amdarh. Closer and closer. she said to herself, her distance to the seat of the Territory Court growing. She would have to deal with Teoda more than she wanted now but the converse was true as well. Teoda would have to factor Mari into her calculations about Dhemlan as a whole. Both women, ostensibly, wanted the best for Dhemlan.

Mari knew that only one of them truly meant it.

She felt his presence before his spoke. Of all her males, Nicanor’s presence was the hardest to ignore, the easier to pick out in a room. He had a way about him, a hunger and fury that quelled lesser men and made him more interesting to every woman in his orbit. He was intelligent, deadly, and powerful. He was hers and Mari had never been sorry for it.

And yet they’d never been more distant than they were now.

Please join me, my Nicanor.” she said, wondering if he’d take it ill. He was her Master of the Guard and her deadliest warrior. Only Vicente had been with her longer, but Vicente was the one for numbers and figures, like Mari herself. Nicanor was her hammer when the situation called for it.

We’ve done it. Pirenza is ours.” Mari said, taking another sip of her wine.

She was silent.

Should I have disposed of Amore?” Mari asked. It wasn’t the first time she’d resorted to murder to claim a seat, but Amore wore the Sapphire. Robbing the world of a fellow Queen was a risky prospect, filled with all manner of legends about the suffering that one of the Blood would endure in the afterlife for slaying the holiest of castes. Yet if she’d told Nicanor to make sure that Amore’s body was never found, he’d have done it without question.

She faced him now. He stood across the room but it felt like a valley lay between them. She hadn’t figured out how to bridge the distance, or if she even could. Her treatment of Lorenzo lay between them like a wall neither could cross. She could not rewind time and she didn’t know what she’d do, what action she’d take, even if she could.

I know that there are more important things to discuss, but I wanted to hear your thoughts.

And perhaps your voice.

"Yours." Nicanor quietly rumbled in correction after he closed the door and layered the chamber with his Blood Opal. The Warlord Prince was remarkably smooth and yet solid at the same time. He moved with the grace of a prowling tiger and yet also seemed to have every straight line in proper position. His suit was always neatly pressed and unblemished, and it always seemed the perfect cut. "Pirenza is yours."

Because it had never been about what was Nicanor's. It had always been what Mari had wanted. That wasn't something he begrudged her, but he hated false niceties and lies among intimate partners. He had been Mari's for centuries now, both as a bedmate and a loyal servant. He had indulged her and loved to treat her as the Queen she was. But the death of one son and the dismissal of another had rankled him and always been a source of bitter disagreement for her Warlord Prince. The recent addition of another male would have made him prickly regardless. The recent rise in power even more so.

Yet he was not the sort to mope or to complain. Whatever issues he had he held to himself unless he was called upon to speak of it. He knew his place and his role quite well, and was comfortable in his own suit and skin. He took up the seat across from her and pulled it out, gently guiding himself to it. "Seems to me to have been an unnecessary risk." He said smoothly, but he looked up at her then, his eyes focused and certain.

"But if you want it done, there's still time." Unabashed and unafraid of such a command. He was, as always, her loyal servant.

"My thoughts are this is what you wanted. And so you should take it. I have always told you that. Your ambition is what drives you and makes you who you are. I cannot imagine a Mari Calderon who is satisfied with her position in life -- even if you were to take the Territory Seat."

Nicanor paused then, steepling his fingers in thought. "And there is no shame in remvoing a Queen who cannot run her Court. A bad Queen should not rule." His eyes lifted, just a touch, to move from her glass to her eyes.

"There is a gulf of difference between deposing an unworthy Queen and a worthy one."

I should have expected that.

While Nicanor was right, and Pirenza was hers, she wished that he’d share in her joy, just a little. But the gulf between them was dug by a single misstep on her part, something that Nicanor had yet to forgive her for: Lorenzo’s banishment. She was in mourning, filled with grief and rage when it happened. She thought he would understand, but she’d erred, misjudged Nicanor’s love for Lorenzo weighed against his love for her. He stopped coming to her bed after that, stopped seeking her out. Vicente and Armando had both tried to console her emotionally and sexually but it was never, ever, quite the same.

Nicanor commented on the risk in leaving Amore alive and Mari considered it. If she ever did get clean and started feeling vengeful, a Sapphire Queen was an enemy that Mari could not fight head on. Then again, Mari didn’t intend to. Any day now, Prince Sheane would (hopefully) return to her about a contact for the training that she sought. For now, though, she wondered if Nicanor wasn’t correct about having her killed.

Her males would have to go with her as well. Paz has already been dispatched.” she said, taking another sip of her wine. She didn’t say it would have to be quiet. Nicanor already understood the value of discretion.

You’re right, a bad Queen shouldn’t rule. She was a decent Queen, but the pressure got to her at some point. She loved the White Widow more than the land. I’ve never understood that.” Mari said, briefly opening her senses to the land around her. Even in this monstrosity of a house, Mari felt the thrum and pulse of the land in her veins. The feel of Dhemlan around her, within her, was like nothing else in the world. Blindfold her and take her to another land, and she’d still know the subtle differences between that place in Dhemlan from the way the soil felt beneath her feet.

The Territory Seat is decided for now, Nicanor. Fortifying my position here is the smarter play, before the Territory Court sends someone to visit and question what happened to Amore. The news will get to Teoda eventually. I’d like to make it difficult for her to dislodge me.

She has enough to deal with.
” he said.

Mari set down her glass on the desk, then lowered herself into the chair briefly, testing it out. It wasn’t her office in Vigo, but having this place redecorated wouldn’t be difficult. Living near the ocean would be harder.

We’ll need to move the Court here and then I’ll introduce myself to the notables of the Province at large. That might take through Winsol to accomplish, but it’ll be worth it. Will you please make certain that Xiomara and Clarissa arrive here in the next few days? I would like them close by.” Mari said.

"The Males loyal to her, though it's unclear which of them were bound by the Bond and which by contract. I'd err on the side of caution and assume everyone in her First and Second Circles are not people we can recruit." Nicanor's words were slow and measured, the immaculate perfection of a man who measured every word.

"Now is not tomorrow. I do not assume that you will make a play for the Territory Seat in the immediate future. But I would not think you the woman I know if you've not already considered that this is but one more step toward that seat.

Teoda will accept you here and you know that."

He nodded at her request to bring Xiomara and Clarissa to the new seat immediately. "You could send the request to the Cathedra for a new High Priestess." Meaning Marisol, for Nicanor always wanted Mari's family close to her, even when they chafed and challenged her. His eyes did not shift from her. It was not a coy, soft suggestion. His words were direct and focused, his meaning clear.

"A Provinical position would suit her ambition as much as it would suit yours. She is her mother's daughter."

There were more concerns and suggestions, of course. He had plenty of things on his mind about this recent change of address and power. There was a divide between them, still. A century later and they had not entirely healed that rift. Nicanor would not seek to build that bridge, however. They'd had that argument after Lorenzo's banishment, though perhaps they'd not made their full points to one another.

In the end, Mari was meant to rule, and Nicanor to serve.

Mari met Nicanor’s gaze as he suggested that she request a new High Priestess from the Cathedra, Marisol to be exact. Another smart play, one that Mari had considered. She had considerable currency with the Cathedra due to her constant boosting and advocating on their behalf, a relationship that Mari did not lean on without forethought. Bringing Marisol into the fold would strengthen the new Province Court further and force Teoda to rethink attempts to replace her. Marisol's contacts would also be useful. Having her daughter where she could see her and work with her was best. Nicanor was sure that Teoda would accept her but Mari remained wary.

Constant vigilance would keep her alive.

I’ve been meaning to check in with the Cathedra after the success of the last gala, anyhow.” Mari said. She wanted Marisol home, but if Lorenzo also returned home their family would be reunited for the first time in over a century. All of the Calderons, together again, and trying to make a go of being a normal family once more.

Not all of us.

Her family was slowly, but surely, rebuilding itself. Pirenza was hers after centuries of waiting. She needed to feel out the other Province Queens and their ambitions before much longer passed. Well, she really only needed to feel out Elena Barbero, the Queen of Seville. Cantebria still had a fill-in sitting in La Orotova. It rankled Mari that Teoda hadn’t chosen anyone for that seat yet, but she could do little from here at the moment. He time was better spent consolidating her power. Marisol’s presence would be a boon, along with her Red Jewel.

Lorenzo wishes to serve. I will bring him into the Second Circle here at the Province Court. If there’s any chance at rebuilding, it will begin here.” Mari said. She would once again have to manage all of her children again under the same roof. Between Marisol and Lorenzo, Mari expected her hair to gray inside of a century. Sweet Clarissa might be the only member of her family who kept her sane in the coming weeks, when watching her son and daughter squabble, openly or not, grew tiresome.

Luis would have managed them. He would have soothed tempers and pushed them to reconcile. Clarissa didn’t have the temperament to play peacemaker. Both Lorenzo and Marisol were too damned proud to settle the matter themselves and it had nothing to do with Xiomara. That matter still had to be dealt with…

She realized that she hadn’t spoken in several minutes.

I apologize. I'm just considering everything that needs doing and your suggestions are on point. We have enough people in Vigo to replace everyone I remove here.” she said.

"I'll leave you to your tasks, Nicanor. Let me know if you need anything further. " she said, resigning herself to a life of limited sleep for the next several nights. There was much to do.

She had moves to make.
